SPARTANBURG METHODI ST COLLEGE

In graduate school, I took a course that helped me fully grasp themeaning of “professionals.” After weeks of class discussions, readings, and research, I came to a simple but profound

understanding: Professionals know who they are, what they are doing, and where they are going.

In unique ways, this definition also applies to colleges and universities. To be effective in educating students, colleges must knowwho they are. Without such knowledge, the institution’s mission isunclear. And without a clear understanding of its mission, the institution’s ability to educate students and plan for its future is greatlyimpaired.

Institutions must be intentional in doing what is best to promote student learning. Institutionsthat do not retain a sharp focus on their raison d’etre lose the ability to meaningfully engage in educational processes with students.

Without an understanding of who they are and what they are doing, institutions will not knowwhere they are going. An old Chinese proverb expresses it well: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” The institution’s vision must build upon the history of the institution andremain faithful to the values upon which it was founded. Armed with this knowledge and with a resolute commitment to students, the institution must then develop its vision for the future.

In mid-February, our Board of Trustees, along with selected administrators and faculty, held a two-day Strategic Planning Retreat that refreshed our understanding of who we are and what we are doingto promote student learning in and outside the classroom. As the retreat progressed, visioning activities helped the Board gain insight into the future of the College. The participants came to understand the challenges we face and the future we must pursue.

The Board approved the construction of Sparrow Residence Hall, a 119-bed facility made possiblethrough a generous pledge from Mr. John Sparrow in Lake City, S.C. Plans are being drafted toexpand the Buchheit Administration Building through the addition of the Vassey InformationTechnology Center, a Center made possible through a bequest from the late Herbert and RebeccaVassey. The College will continue to beautify the grounds and upgrade facilities.

As we build for the future, we will expand our academic curriculum and degree programs. Newcareer-track academic programs, such as our emerging Paralegal Studies Program, will be developed tooffer our graduates the option either to continue their education at baccalaureate level institutions orimmediately enter the work force after completing the associate’s degree. Also, we will continue toenhance student learning both in and outside the classroom.

As we approach our 100th year anniversary in 2011, we ask for your prayers and your continuedsupport. Even more, we invite you to become our partners in education. Together we will strengthenour college and better prepare our students to become effective leaders in the 21st Century.

Sincerely,

Message from the President

Charles P. TeaguePresident of the College

VISION 2005

Established in 1911, Text ile I ndust r ialI nst itute, the forerunner of SpartanburgMethodist College, was founded to pro-

vide an educat ional opportunity for the am bi-t ious, but financially disadvantaged. A pioneerin work-study and the first to be founded by achurch organizat ion (Methodist ) , this inst itu-t ion has provided an educat ional opportunityto thousands during the past 94 years.

I n 1942 the Text ile I ndustrial I nst itute wasrenamed Spartanburg Junior College, thus reflect ing the major emphasis of the educa-t ional program. From its very incept ion, theCollege has maintained a dist inct character.Sound educat ional programming, a deep com-mitment to the financially disadvantaged, andsensit ivity to emerging needs have been thehallmark of this inst itut ion. I n 1974 the namewas changed to Spartanburg MethodistCollege.

The Board of Trustees cont inues to insist onemphasizing student financial aid, sound basiceducat ion, and new program opportunit ies. Nostudent has ever been denied admission tothis college for financial reasons.

I n addit ion to the basic two-year LiberalArts course of study, special new avenueshave been opened in adult educat ion. TheParalegal Program , recent ly im plem ented atSpartanburg Methodist College, provides stu-dents an opportunity to build required skills

SMC EXCEEDS FUNDRAISING TOTALS

In 2004, Spartanburg Methodist College received the largest am ount of fundraising com m itm ents inits 94-year history. I n the final year of SMC’s Vision 2005 $20 Million Cam paign, the 2004 totalsare at m ore than $16 m illion. Dan Foster, Chairm an of the SMC Board, said that 2004 com m itm ents

totaled $4,383,213. Foster m ade the announcem ent , which topped the previous high of $3,991,524by approxim ately 10 percent , at the local Donors Appreciat ion Dinner, held February 15.

Foster said it was a difficult fundraising year and that it took a num ber of year-end cont r ibut ionsto at tain success. While the increased fundraising has enabled the College to const ruct new buildingssuch as the Bridges Residence Hall, it has also helped increase enrollm ent by 10 percent and im provethe quality of the Fall 2004 entering class.

President Charles P. Teague said that the $2 m illion challenge grant from Drs. Edgar H. andCharlot te Ellis was very inst rum ental in helping realize the totals.

essent ial for success in their careers. TheCrim inal Just ice Program is another expres-sion of the intent of the College to providecreat ive educat ional opportunit ies for all ofthose who have a thirst for knowledge, ordesire a m ore product ive life in their chosenvocat ion. Academic innovat ions have beenmany and varied over the years, and new ideascont inue to evolve.

As the College’s program s have increased, the num ber of persons who call on the Collegefor educat ional services has increased drast i-cally. There has been a 47 percent increasesince 1999. During the past two years, theenrollm ent has increased 17 percent – anam azing stat ist ic for a pr ivate college today.

The College now stands at the crossroadsagain. New facilit ies, the renovat ion of olderbuildings, and a st ronger endowm ent areessent ial for Spartanburg Methodist Collegeto cont inue its dist inct ive role of leadership inquality educat ion – a higher educat ion foranyone who desires it – regardless of financialneed, ethnic or religious heritage. As m anyprivate colleges are set t ling for less servicecapacity, Spartanburg Methodist College isst r iving for the st rength to ensure future gen-erat ions the sam e opportunity offered theirparents and grandparents during our 94 yearsof serv ice. We cannot and w ill not set t le for m ediocrity.

Sanders then heard t r ibutes from past and presentcoaches and presidents, signed autographs, and chat -ted with form er team m ates and others about theirdays at SMC during the late 1980s.

Those paying t r ibute to the 36-year-old baseballstandout included Dr. Charles Teague, SMC President ;Dr. George Fields, form er president ; Dan Foster,Chairm an of the SMC Board of Trustees; Lon Joyce, form er Pioneers Baseball Coach; Roger Ullery, form erAssistant Coach; Tim Wallace, cur rent PioneersBaseball Coach; and form er college room m ate, JoelPerkins.

“The m ost im pressive thing about this gent lem anto m e is that he is t ruly a role m odel for others,” saidTeague of Sanders, not ing his faith and com m itm entto his fam ily, fr iends and alm a m ater. Fields, who waspresident while Sanders was at SMC, character izedhim as a winner and a gent lem an who has broughthonor to his college.

Form er Pioneers Coach, Lon Joyce, said he wasim pressed by Sanders from the t im e he first saw himplay high school baseball at Florence. Joyce recognized Sanders as a top player a few years laterwhen he cam e to SMC for baseball t ryouts. He praisedSanders for cont inuing t o be an out st andingspokesm an for SMC.

When Roger Ullery joined SMC in 1987 as assis-tant coach, he recalled saying to him self that Sanderswas a professional prospect . “Reggie played shortstopfor us that year and the hill behind first base lookedlike a bat t lefield because of his ‘grenade launcher ’arm ,” said Ullery, who quipped that Sanders “ tore up”a few bat t ing cages as a Pioneer player. Ullery thenstated how im pressed he was with Sanders’ integrity,

honest y and genuine character.

Wallace and Foster bothrecounted a recent episodethat best illustrates Sanders’character. In response to aJune incident at TexasRangers Stadium in which anadult fan knocked aside four-year-old Nicholas O’Brien tocatch a foul ball, Sandersemerged between innings topresent the boy with an

autographed bat and ball. Wal lace r ecal led t h at t h ebat was a “gam e bat ,” which he said was “as valuableas gold.” Foster echoed Sanders’ rem ark that baseballis about kids, em phasizing that SMC graduates shouldvow to m ake a difference in the lives of others. Bothcoaches spoke of Sanders’ m ajor league record, whichincludes a six-year record of 20-plus hom e runs and20 stolen bases earned while playing for six differentteam s.

Perkins joked about the t im e he and Sandersshared a room at SMC and how he was a st ickler for cleanliness, but praised him as a “good Christ ian,God- fearing m an with a lovely fam ily.”

Teague then invited Sanders and his fam ily tounveil one of the signs that m ark the st reet whichruns from Grant Softball Field to Bridges Arena within sight of the baseball out field. Sanders, accom -panied by his wife, Wyndee, and children, Cody, 12,Carr igon, 7, Carson, 3, and eight-m onth-old Cooper, unveiled the sign.

Sanders then had his turn at the m icrophone andtook the next few minutes to recount his t ime as a stu-dent and to praise Joyce, Fields and others for wel-coming him to SMC and helping him realize his talents.

Sanders ( fourth from r ight ) with form er Pioneerteam m ates, Coach Lon Joyce ( left ) and AssistantCoach Roger Ullery (second from left )

“What you’ve given m e through the years ispriceless,” said Sanders of Coach Joyce, adding, “ Inever realized I had the talent to be a professionalbaseball player unt il I cam e to SMC and had the firstopportunity of get t ing a scout to recognize my talents.” To SMC faculty and staff, Sanders said, “Yourschooling m e and helping m e along that journey – I ’mdefinitely indebted for that .” Sanders then thanked hisfam ily for inst illing in him values of being respect ful,hum ble, and gracious. He said t hat t he m ost im portant possession for today’s youth is character.

Throughout his professional career, Sanders hascont inually reaffirm ed his close t ies with SMC throughpart icipat ion in baseball clinics, helping the 1996Pioneers t ravel to Dist r ict Playoffs in Mississippi, anddonat ing financial gifts which were used to im prove,m aintain, and expand outdoor athlet ic facilit ies on theSMC cam pus. TII Founder RecallsMilitary Neighbor

When the United States enteredWorld War I, the face ofSpartanburg would soon be

transformed by more than 30,000 troopswho lived and trained at Camp Wadsworthbefore shipping off to Europe.

At the same time, the TextileIndustrial Institute, located acrossthe creek, felt the impact of thecamp’s close proximity. Dr. DavidEnglish Camak, who establishedthe institute in 1911 and moved itto its current location shortly afterthat, wrote about those war yearsas part of an unpublished manu-script, “Singing Helps Win Battles.”

Camak’s story, contributed byDr. Katherine Davis Cann, professor ofHistory at SMC, is featured in When theSoldiers Came to Town, the latest book tobe published by the Hub City Writer’sProject. Shortly after the U.S. enteredWorld War I in 1917, Camp Wadsworthwas carved out of 2,000 acres of pineforests located west of Spartanburg.

Today, almost nothing remains of thecamp, which sat on land now bisectedby Interstate 26 and occupied by

Westgate Mall and the bustling commer-cial area along U.S. Highway 29.

“We found it difficult to teachpatriotism and discourage courtshipboth at the same time,” recalledCamak in his manuscript. Dailybugle calls and columns of soldiersmarching along the public roadthrough the TII campus served asconstant reminders to students, faculty and staff of the militarypresence. He noted that the sol-diers visited the campus canteen,

men’s dormitory, and would occasion-ally be found on top of a large mound

of granite rubble overlooking the girl’s dormitory.

Camak recalled a soldier whooffered to marry one of the female students. “We referred him to the younglady’s parents,” he wrote. At Camak’srequest, mounted military police would

The Textile Industrial Institute, now known as Spartanburg Methodist College, moved several structures fromnearby Camp Wadsworth after World War I. Pictured at left is the camp’s library, which was moved in pieces bystudents two miles to the campus. Love and Graduation(Tune: “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”)

To Textile Institute one day a pretty maiden went,

The boys began to look at her most ardently intent,

They sang to her sweet songs of love and looked her in the eye,

She shook her saucy head at them and made them this reply;

Chorus:

It’s a long way to graduation; it’s a long way, I know.

It’s a long way to graduation, but I am bound to go.

Good-bye old flirtation, Farewell, Cupid dear,

It’s a long, long way to graduation, but I’ll be right there!

A handsome fellow, too, was found within the school one day,

And all the girls began to look at him as if to say;

“You’re old enough to settle down and have a happy home;

Just get it fixed and send for me, for I’ll be glad to come.”

An educated man and woman built a bungalow.

Said she to Jim, “Do you remember why I first said no?”

“’Twas you that said it while I thought it, for the road seem’d long

Do you remember how we sang in the old school days that song?”

patrol the campus. Concerned over theinteraction of female students with thenearby soldiers, Camak penned lyrics andset them to the tune of the popular warsong “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” appar-ently to discourage his young studentsfrom surrendering to Cupid’s arrow.Amazingly, Camak didn’t recall anyinstances of “serious social indescretion”during those years when soldiersappeared to be everywhere.

When the war ended and CampWadsworth closed, the Institute acquiredseveral of its structures and moved them piece-by-piece to its campus for classroom space andhousing.

When Hickory Grove farmerand 1938 TI I grad William B.Wilkerson Jr. died on Feb. 3, 2000,his friends and colleagues fromthe York Soil and WaterConservation Commission wantedto do more than donate flowers. He had been a commissioner 53years and was act ive in his community throughout his life.

“We thought set t ing up a scholarship would be a m ore fit t ing tribute than flowers,” saidYork Soil and Water Conservat ionCommissioner, Bennie Copeland, who served with Wilkerson in theYork County Soil and WaterCommission and also a graduateof the inst itut ion when it was laterknown as Spartanburg JuniorCollege. Copeland knew Wilkersonto be a dedicated member of hiscommunity who was also fond ofSMC.

“We tried for so long to raisethat money,” said Copeland. “Wepulled money out of our ownpockets. I t took us four years just to get close.” LastDecember during its regular board meet ing, theCommission received a late Christmas present — a$2,000 donat ion from Sharon-based Palmetto MasonicLodge 289 — where Wilkerson was past master.

“ I t ’s a wonder ful feeling of accom plishm ent ,”Copeland said of the donat ion. “Now the fund isendowed, and it can help students who need a lit t lehelp with tuit ion.”

“That ’s what Wilkerson would have wanted,” saidBill Sum m erville, a good fr iend of Wilkerson and current fund- raising chairm an for the lodge.

“He was a fine m an who always put others aheadof him self,” Sum m erville added. “He was always oneto help the com m unity.” Wilkerson’s com m unity rolesincluded everything from Sunday School teacher atMount Vernon Methodist Church to a st int on thestate’s board of directors for the South CarolinaAssociat ion of Conservat ion Dist r icts. This is the firstt im e t he York Soil and Wat er Conservat ionCom m ission has established a scholarship.

“We see this as a m ild stepping stone,” Copelandsaid. “Now, we can add to this and hopefully watch itgrow to $100,000.”
