child care, emergency response, law enforcement, andcommunity services to promote awareness and knowledge ofSudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), other sudden andunexpected infant/child deaths, and practices to reduce the riskof these deaths. CICL studies trends in sudden and unexpecteddeath and identify effective training and outreach initiatives tobenefit children and families.

The Center has identified 10 specific missions to assure that theorganization remain strong and relevant in the years to come:

1. Expand grief counseling initiatives2. Enhance promotion of infant safe sleep training/awareness3. Increase child injury prevention initiatives4. Increase promotional awareness of Maryland’sCyberbullying Law;

5. Enhanced promotion of mentoring pilot project6. Dissemination of educational materials to hospitals acrossthe State

7. Manage fundraising initiatives8. Identify additional funding sources

9. Study trends in infant/child death to make appropriatelegislative recommendations

10. State of the art database

In 2013 the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene had tomake the difficult decision to reduce the CICL Grant. The mostrecent DHMH grant continues to reduce the funding received. It is imperative that the Center act proactively and immediatelyto secure funding through additional grant opportunities andfundraising.

The Center recently launched a Mobile Giving Campaign toraise awareness for our organization and to seek support. Bytexting CICL to 20222 you will donate $10 to the Center andhelp our mission of compassion.

Millions of people find gardeningtherapeutic and relaxing, a way to stay intouch with nature. Working with plantsis hands-on and produces tangibleresults while nurturing the mind, thebody, and enriching the spirit. A gardencan provide a serene place forcontemplation and a place to leave thestresses of the day behind.

A garden requires work and takes timeto cultivate to get results, very muchlike the healing process and workingthrough grief. Plants respond to careand they are non-judgmental. Theirgrowth is incremental, not unlike thegrief process. A daily check-in is helpfulin both regards.

The simplicity of a garden makes itideal for a beginner. A parent can teacha child while enjoying valuable timetogether. The children might even eatthe vegetables they grow! Community

gardens can be a way tocreate pride in a neighbor-hood with young and oldworking side by side toward agoal. Even if you don’t havea green thumb, you can growsomething hearty likeornamental grasses.

Gardens can be created with acolor scheme or a purpose suchas flowers for cutting, attractingbutterflies or birds, or aroundwater features. Benches andhand made stepping stones asaccents, create a focal point. For those who may not have the space, useof containers such as clay pots or windowboxes are an option. Anything that can begrown in the ground can be grown in acontainer. Use your imagination.

Planting a tree either in your own yard,on school grounds or in a park is a

wonderful way to honor your loved one, serving as a lasting memory as it grows. If you are not afraid to get your handsdirty, the possibilities are endless and thebenefits rewarding and long lasting. Asearch on the Internet or a trip to thelibrary can start you on a journey ofhealing. It’s never too late to get started.

They say that time heals all wounds. Stephanie & TerryMcClung don’t exactly subscribe to that theory. Insteadthey say, “It’s what you do over time that may help ease

the pain a bit. For us, getting involved, raising awareness, andgiving back has helped. But everybody deals with that wounddifferently and there’s no right or wrong way.”

Terry & Stephanie connected with CICL shortly after theirdaughter Kaitlyn passed away from SIDS in 2009. They’reactive in a number of the Center’s initiatives and are AdvisoryBoard Members. They also organize an event of their own, witha large portion of the proceeds benefiting CICL.

Kaitlyn’s Birthday Dinner/Dance for SIDS has become anannual tradition for Terry & Stephanie since Kaitlyn’s 1stbirthday in 2009. The Dance is held on the first Saturday inDecember each year. There have been subtle changesthroughout the years, but generally speaking Kaitlyn’s Dancehas become a tradition with many of the same attendees andmany of the same highlights.

2015 was no exception. About 200 people attended Kaitlyn’sDance at the Legacy Hall in Sykesville. After enjoying adelicious meal from “The Oyster Guy” and Salazar Catering, attendees filled the dance floor with the help of the always

entertaining DJ Paul Lantz. As usual, a lot of people were notempty handed when they left. There were 40 Silent AuctionItems, 8 Chinese Auction Items, and a LOT of door prizes. Newthis year, with the help of eFotoz, most attendees took home afun set of pictures from the photo booth. Special thanks toColumbia Ski Club, the vendors just listed, the many peopleand businesses who made donations, and all the attendees formaking Kaitlyn’s 7th Birthday Dinner Dance for SIDS anotherincredible success. $7,000 was raised this year. That brings thetotal money raised in Kaitlyn’s name over the course of theyears to $50,000!

Planning for this year’s dance is already underway. Kaitlyn’s8th Birthday Dinner/Dance for SIDS will be held on December3, 2016 – Kaitlyn’s actual birthday. The venue will again be theLegacy Hall in Sykesville, MD and most of the other details willremain the same. The biggest change in 2016 and the biggestnews for the Center is that all proceeds of the Dance willbenefit CICL. Tickets will go on sale soon. More details will beavailable at kaitlynsdance.com and facebook.com/kaitlynsdance

Terry and Stephanie spend about 6 months of the year veryfocused on Kaitlyn’s Dance, but they hope to continue thistradition year after year. “It doesn’t matter how much time haspassed. That wound will never completely heal. But taking timeout to remember and honor Kaitlyn and carry on her legacyeach year eases the pain a bit. That’s why we do what we do.”

The 3rd Annual Dr. G’s Vegas Nightfundraiser is a proven success. Weare so very fortunate to have

friends that come out year after year tosupport our mission and Dr. G’spassion. Our guests came out tocelebrate and honor Dr. Gutberletand the Center for Infant & ChildLoss, an organization he founded in 1975. Dr. Gutberlet’s missionwas to support Maryland families who suffered the sudden andunexpected loss of an infant. This program has since expanded toprovide grief to families who suffer the sudden and unexpected deathof an infant or child through the age of 16 years as well as provideeducational training to childcare and public safety professionals in theState of Maryland.

The night began with cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a briefwelcome the Center’s Director LaToya Bates, who also served as theMC for the evening, providing door prizes to lucky attendees. As thegames played on throughout the night, there was a laughter andcheers all around. Guests played blackjack, roulette, slots, the moneywheel and more with $100,000 “Heavy D” Bucks’. Door prizes weregiven out every 15 minutes adding to the excitement of the activegame play. Special thanks to the Center’s Advisory Board Membersfor providing the giveaways.

As the night continued, the air grew thicker with excitement as thecompetition of who could win the most raffle tickets began. At theend of the night, the person with the most raffle tickets increasedtheir chances to win one of 3 flat screen TVs. In addition, there were12 Silent Auction Items courtesy of some simply phenomenal friendsof the Center.

The evening concluded with a few words of thanks from LaToya Bates& Jonathan Melnick.Congratulations to all thewinners of the evening, whichinclude, the winners of the doorprizes, the 50x50 raffle and theflat screen televisions that werethe grand prizes.

Please be on the lookout forinformation regarding the 4thAnnual Dr. G’s Vegas Night. It will be held at the SouthernManagement Center on thecampus of the University ofMaryland.

Continued from Page 118th Annual WalkThere are a host of people and businesses that come together to make

this event happen. Many thanks to Walter Kulane of Dove Tails for hisprofessionalism and passion for this event. Panera’s, bagels and

Hoehn’s Bakery’s donuts helped to fuel the walkers in the morning. MangerPacking Company, donated the hot dogs, Giant Foods donated fruit, ABCRental, much needed tables and chairs, and Charm City Ice. The hungrywalkers gobbled up the hot dogs grilled to perfection by the Campbell family.Herr’s Snack Foods never says no to our requests for chips. Anthony Bostonis our resident photographer and also helping out with pictures, DavidCarter, grandfather of Tyler.

Recently this year we lost two people who had quite an impact on the walk intheir own way and were recognized at the dove release ceremony. First,Barbara McCready, mother of Tracy Campbell, lost her battle with cancer afew months ago. She spent her own money and time purchasing drinks forthe walk every year in memory of grandson, Devin Campbell. We truly missedher and her generosity.

Secondly, two days after she worked a Quarter Auctionto raise money for Team Landon Sneade, Joann Spittledied suddenly. She was a dear friend and supporter ofthe Sneade and Rogers families and will be sorelymissed. Thank you to both of these women for theircontributions and we remember them and theirfamilies as they grieve their loss.

The Center’s goal is to assist families as they learn

to live with the loss of their child and to have hope

for the future. Our programs reach out to bereaved

families and the community. Center programs foster hope by

offering public education, health care provider training, and

instruction for emergency responders and others who may

provide support.

Each of our four programs is designed to meet individual,

family, and community needs. For those families who do

experience the sudden death of an infant or child, the Center

makes immediate contact to give them available information

about the cause of death and support in their grief.
