E ach year the summer issue of

the Messenger beautifully displays the ongoing relationship at Mount St. Mary between our students — and the bright promise their futures hold — and our donors, whose belief in the school and its mission continue to make a difference here at MSM.

Throughout this issue you’ll see many examples of Mount St. Mary students who push themselves to excel in areas of academics, leadership and service. Our Class of 2014 amazed us all with their scholarship offerings in the amount of $9.5 million and their generosity of spirit in all they undertake. The last months of the school year abounded with MSM student achievements, like the Odyssey of the Mind team placing fifth overall in the World Finals at Iowa State University in May. We are tremendously grateful to you for investing in their futures and the future of Mount St. Mary Academy through ongoing support of the Mount St. Mary Foundation.

Our overriding mission of the Mount St. Mary Foundation is to raise, manage and disburse funds for the exclusive use and mission of Mount St. Mary Academy. Every day we see the impact these gifts are making in terms of endowments, and more importantly, to the number of scholarships distributed to MSM students. This year $377,000 was awarded to Mount St. Mary students for need-based and merit-based scholarships and tuition aid. Because of you, the Mount St. Mary Foundation was able to provide $1.9M, nearly 34% of the

Mount St. Mary Academy operating budget through endowments, grants, designated and annual gifts. (See more financials on the next page.)

In addition to the awards and recognition given at the end of the school year, we want to acknowledge the ongoing successes throughout the year as well. Attendance at our Mother-Daughter Rosaries and Father-Daughter Masses nears 300 on a monthly basis, filling the McAuley Center with spiritual camaraderie. The efforts of our Board of Directors, Foundation Board of Directors, our PTO, Athletic and Spirit Booster Boards, our Alumnae Association, and the Dads’ Club continue to inspire new levels of participation and involvement with our school. Our fundraising activities — FASHIONating History, Dinner Belles, the Teepot Classic and our Annual Fund — were all successful, and several new named scholarships were established this year as well.

This year many lasting impressions have been left on our school community. We wish the best of luck to our outgoing principal, Diane Wolfe, as she begins a new journey after her five years of faithful service and leadership at Mount St. Mary. I know I am speaking on behalf of so many people, in addition to myself, when I say I am sincerely grateful to Diane for her service to Mount St. Mary, both as principal and as an educator. As you know, she faced some difficult challenges during her five years of leadership, and I will always be grateful for her commitment to our

students and to the mission of Mount St. Mary Academy.

Stepping up from her role as assistant principal, Angie Collins will serve as the interim principal, managing day-to-day operations, while I continue as the president/CEO. Mrs. Collins has been engaged in the field of education for 22 years and holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership. She is a recipient of the Stephens Teaching Award, and prior to serving as assistant principal Mrs. Collins taught chemistry, honors chemistry and anatomy/physiology at Mount St. Mary. We are fortunate that she has a track record of experience at the Mount and is prepared to lead us through the coming year.

Each year our unified school community continues to follow the instruction of Catherine McAuley to “resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow. Let us take one day only in hands, at a time, merely making a resolve for tomorrow, thus we may hope to get on taking short, careful steps, not great strides.” This conviction is evidenced by each graduating class that prepares the next to follow in its footsteps. We thank you for the lasting impression that you all have made on Mount St. Mary Academy to embrace our traditions and sustain our mission for the next generation of young women. ™

Impact of Your Generosity

The MSM Family and Consumer Science Department was granted an item from their Wish List — a commercial-grade refrigerator for storage and preparation — that was purchased with the help of designated gifts from Lou Ann & Wally Gieringer and Karen & Ernie Cline during the 2013-2014 school year.

The 1.4% Capital for 2013-2014 funded a 15-passenger shuttle, purchased to transport student groups and athletic teams for field trips and away-games.

The 1.3% Development, Leadership & Resources funds, used to enhance professional development for faculty and staff, provide learning opportunities like the anti-bullying conference that members of the Guidance, Admissions/Retention and Multimedia Departments attended this summer in Chicago.

Added as part of the campus improvements completed in September 2013, the new stamped concrete pedestrian plaza between the school cafeteria and gymnasium enhances student life activities while addressing student safety by closing off the driveway. The designated gift from an anonymous donor allowed the project to be fully funded and completed in 2013.

How Foundation Funds Help the School Because of your generosity this year, MSM was able to grant over

$377,000 in tuition aid for the 2013-2014 school year. Additionally, several items from the school “Wish List” were funded

for specific classroom and school needs:• Apple laptops for Multimedia• Commercial refrigerator for Family and Consumer Sciences• Microphones for Drama Department

Anna Sharabura ’14, was named recipient of the 2014 Stephens Award by the City Education Trust at an awards ceremony on Monday, April 21st. The Stephens Award was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding educators and students in Little Rock. This year only eight students with proven records of excellence were awarded $5,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education.

Dr. Tina Hendrickson, Chemistry instructor and Science Department Chair from Mount St. Mary Academy, was one of the four Little Rock Science Educators recognized by Little Rock Mayor, Mark Stodola, and DuPont Public Affairs Manager, Ms. Mary Kate Campbell, as DuPont Office of Education Scholarship Recipients. Scholarship recipients received trips to the National Science Teachers Conference in Boston, Massachusetts in April 2014. Since 2013, DuPont has provided more than 50 science educators with access to national professional development programs to enhance their ability to bring science to life in their classrooms through the program.

Cheri Bonner Martinka ’85 was awarded The John and Patricia Bailey Distinguished Teaching Award, given to a Mount St. Mary teacher for overall excellence in teaching during the 2013-2014 school year. Mrs. Martinka said she felt honored to receive the award, expressing “There are so many really deserving teachers here. I love being here and teaching here, seeing our girls move on to excel in their college experiences. I feel like I’m at home.”

MSM Cross Country and Tennis teams finished their seasons as 7A Central Conference Champions.

Did you see Mount St. Mary students on local newsstands? Alex Glenn ’14 appeared on the cover of the Arkansas Times Academic All-Stars issue, and Caroline Sage ’14, Abby Mines ’14 and Anna Sharabura ’14 were included in the Head of the Class feature of Little Rock Family that highlights the academic achievements of high school students in Central Arkansas.

Eight MSM seniors received their International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma after taking the most rigorous course of study at MSM, or “Full IB,” which indicates all seven courses are IB courses. Scores can range from 1 to 7 (7 is the highest). Out of 190 tests in all of the IB subjects for juniors and seniors, 61 scored a four, 47 scored a five, 24 scored a six and two scored a seven.

The annual Robin Hood Days canned food drive surpassed the annual goal of 30,000 cans, raising 41,000 cans and cash equivalent — one of the highest totals in recent years. Cans were delivered to local agencies the week before Thanksgiving, and cash donations were delivered to feed hungry Arkansans during the holiday season.

MSM eleventh grade students completed over 7,000 service hours at off-site service assignments in the community. The junior service learning program is part of the MSM students’ third year theology course.

Two new awards were given at this year’s Senior Awards Ceremony for great initiative and entertainment shown in the Belle TV student broadcast. Ella Thomas ’14 was awarded “Best Producer” and Madeline Whitacre ’14 was recognized for “Best Weather Forecast.”

Ministry & Service

The Mount St. Mary Academy campus received some needed

improvements completed in September 2013, when the driveway was closed and converted to a pedestrian plaza.

Reworking several of the parking lot entry and exit points for improved campus safety, the improvements also delivered a new South parking lot, thereby offering an on-site parking option for growing numbers of student drivers.

Jostens, the leading producer of yearbooks and student-created content, announced The Mercian yearbook program as a 2014 Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence, which recognizes dynamic school yearbook staff and advisers who create engaging yearbooks for their school communities. The Mercian staff was one of four schools in the central area to receive the National Yearbook Program of Excellence.

2013-2014

Twenty-four MSM students, grades 9-12, participated in the Marine Corps JROTC program this year, with several seniors receiving awards at the Change

of Command and Awards Ceremony at Catholic High School in April. The Outstanding Cadet Award for 12th Grade and the Women Marine Association Award were given to Emma O’Donnell ’14, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists Award was given to Rachel Fritz ’14, and the Best Drill Cadet Award for 12th Grade was given to Katherine Penney ’14.

Class of 2014 Graduates Remembered For Good”

he Class of 2014 ended their four years at Mount St. Mary Academy with a marathon of activities. This began at Closing Prayer Service on May 8th, followed by the Senior Awards Ceremony the next week and culminated at the Commencement Ceremony on May 22nd.

At the closing prayer service, Student Body President Claire Kane ’14 recollected the class’s journey together from freshman to senior year, during which time they gained the titles of “Fiesta Freshmen” to “Star-Spangled Seniors.” She gave a moving testimony to the strength and solidarity of their class and the role that Mount St. Mary played to develop their class spirit and unity. Mrs. Logan reflected upon the many ways that the class song chosen by the seniors, “For Good,” expressed the choices made by their class and their lasting effect on the school community.

As a parting gift to the school, the seniors donated funds raised by the Class of 2014 to purchase trees, shrubs, grasses and a memorial fountain to be installed near the school’s main entrance. The new green space will be designated the Jennifer Boccarossa ’01 Memorial Garden.

The Senior Awards Ceremony on May 15th celebrated the many accomplishments of the graduating class, honored high-performing seniors in the various fields of study and announced 56% of the class members who achieved the status of honor graduate. The Class of 2014 compiled 4,625 hours of service to the community in their senior year and received over $9.5 million in scholarship offerings from 68 colleges and organizations.

The Commencement Ceremony at Robinson Auditorium on Thursday, May 22nd marked the completion of the series of events. After a welcome from President Karen Goodhart Flake ’65, Bishop Taylor encouraged the graduates, as they discern what paths their lives will take, to ask what God wants for their futures. Missy Thomas Irvin ’89, Arkansas State Senate District #18, delivered the commencement address, asking the class to count their blessings and to realize the ways in which their “cups runneth over” as they embark on each new chapter in their lives. Salutatorian, Alex Glenn ’14, left her parting advice to her class through an artful combination of popular song lyrics titled “Be Your Best.” After Anna Sharabura ’14 gave her valedictory speech titled “Be Inspiring,” one hundred seventeen seniors received their Mount St. Mary Academy diplomas and moved on as the newest class of MSM alumnae, prepared for new challenges and bright futures ahead. ™

TWorld. OM. Wait, what?

he phrase Odyssey of the Mind sounds like the fancy name of a quiz bowl team to most who are unfamiliar with it. In reality, it is one of the most forward thinking creativity programs for students ranging from kindergarten to the collegiate level.

The organization sprouted from an Industrial Design course held at Rowan University by Dr. Sam Micklus, in which he challenged his students to create a vehicle without wheels that could cross a lake. Shortly after, OM was born.

The organization has since stemmed into a vigorous competition that offers five problems each year. After the team selects a problem, they then create an interpretive solution known as their long-term. This takes the form of an eight-minute play, in which they must build props and costumes using unusual materials, all coming in under their $125 restricted budget.

Teams are scored on their long-term problem as well as the style quality of their hard work. Some style point items are mandatory and some the team may select for scoring. Style points can range from the visual quality of

a costume, the functionality of a prop or the quality of incorporated poetry or music compositions.

The final scoring piece is known as the spontaneous problem element. Team members are asked by judges to think about a problem for two to three minutes and then respond with a solution in the same amount of time. These problems can vary widely from creating an “instant” story to building a tower to a particular height from limited equipment. The girls have to learn how to think quick on their feet to be successful.

This year’s team made MSM history by coming in fifth place overall at the competition held at Iowa State University in late May. Throughout the nearly two decades that OM has been active at Mount, the team has yet to place in the top ten overall, let alone top five.

MSM’s OM team was started in 1996 by Dr. Deborah Baldwin, Dean of the UALR College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. At the time, her daughters were students at the school, and the team was in its early stages.

This year’s team has been meeting every Sunday since August to develop a story-line around puppets, as per the problem’s guidelines. They created, among other things, a musical instrument built out of a bike frame, a peoplet character costume that telescoped out to create movement of four puppet bodies, and much more.

OM brings over 800 teams annually from over 25 countries to participate in World Competition. The girls have the opportunity to meet brilliant young minds and see how teams from around the world interpreted the very problem they tackled. The event is not unlike an ’Olympics’ of the mind.

MSM’s various teams have been awarded first or second place in regional and state competitions since 1999. Past teams have progressed to the World Competition and have traveled to universities in Colorado, Michigan, Iowa and Maryland to perform. In the past the MSM team has done well at the World Competition, where they won the style category in 2006 and the spontaneous category in 2000.

Along that vein, the girls were able to stand proudly as their names were called alongside schools from Singapore, New York and North Carolina, who took the top three spots in their division and problem.

The team would not be where it is today without Dr. Baldwin at the forefront of coaching, or as the team members fondly call her, “Dej.” Dr. Baldwin has recruited past OM members, Christin Harper ’99, Monica Madey Mylonas ’06, Ilia Bailey McNeal ’06, and Becca Bona ’08, to help coach as well.

Placing in the top five has sparked the 2014-2015 team, and already, the girls are back up and running, preparing for a new year with new ideas. ™

MSM Places Fifth at Odyssey of the Mind World CompetitionBy Becca Bona ’08

This year’s team, Bayley Elenzweig ’14, Rachel Lorsbach ’14, Abbey Richardson ’14, Emily Dickson ’15, Andrea Roberts ’15, Jude Waggoner ’15, and Wendy Darr ’16, made MSM history by coming in fifth place overall at the competition held at Iowa State University in late May.

Bayley Elenzweig ’14 demonstrates the peoplet character costume that telescoped out to create movement of four puppet bodies. The OM team developed a story-line around puppets, as per the problem’s guidelines.

OM brings over 800 teams annually from over 25 countries to participate in World

Competition. This is the first time that MSM has placed in the top ten,

placing fifth overall this year. 7

G

E mily Moseley’s experience with Abba

House last spring, delivering baby quilts made by the MSM Family and Consumer Science class, only added to the volunteer passion and love of children felt by this service-minded MSM junior. While she did manage to fit in a trip to the beach this past summer, most of her time was spent giving back to others — an experience she said helped her just as much as those she helped.

“I’m kind of obsessed with Mother Teresa, so I wanted to figure out how to volunteer at Abba House,” Emily says of her first impression of the home run by the Missionaries of Charity that offers shelter, food and faith to mothers and newborns.

Emily’s family involvement at Abba House prompted her to find out about opportunities volunteering at the summer day camp for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Emily spent time in July accompanying the camp children on swimming, bowling and skating excursions, but eating lunch with them each day made the list of her most special memories. She shares, “They have so much joy, and in this world you don’t always see a lot of joy. Especially the underprivileged kids — it’s so easy to make them happy. All it takes is a toy from McDonald’s or a bowl of food. You get

your joy from giving it to them and seeing the happiness on their faces.”

Then, it was on to a week of Catholic Heart Workcamp in Hardeeville, South Carolina, where Emily joined youth ministers and teens from around the world who come together to serve others and strengthen their faith through sacraments, prayer and involvement in social service.

Her group’s assignment — assisting an older, disabled couple in need of home repairs — called for them to help with home

organization projects and painting not only rooms in the home’s interior but the entire exterior of the home as well. Emily shares, “I loved working with this family because it made them so happy. The husband could barely walk, the wife was recovering from back surgery, and an 11-year-old girl whose mother had died was living with them. At the end of our time there, they gave us a card and flowers and were so happy about the changes we had made for their family.”

When asked about participation in the junior service learning program at MSM this coming year, Emily says she’s “extremely excited.” And as for the joy she’s received from volunteering to this point, she says, “It helps you appreciate your life and makes you want to help where you can.” ™

race Hambuchen, a rising senior at Mount St. Mary Academy, placed a close second at this year’s National Junior Olympic Shooting Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she earned an appointment to the Junior National Team.

Grace has been competing in international trap shooting for three years now. She grew up in a family of hunters and began shooting in competitions around 7 or 8 years of age. Grace found she preferred shooting shotguns to pistols and has since spread her love of the sport to her team members in the Marine Corps JROTC program as well as the newly formed trap team at Mount St. Mary Academy. The American trap team started last year at MSM competed at the state tournament this past May, where Grace shot 45/50.

Why shooting? Grace says, “I like shooting because it’s something different, and the shooting community is strong. Plus it’s a lot of fun, and it’s something I can do for the rest of my life.”

Winners at the National Finals for international trap shooting are determined by adding the total targets hit in five rounds of 25 (a total of 125 points) plus points from a Final Round. The top six enter a shootout — first and second place finishers competing for the Gold Medal and third and fourth place finishers competing for the Bronze Medal. By the number of targets hit, Grace would have finished first, and even shot a perfect round on the second day of the competition. However, because of a Count Back Rule used

in close matches, which took into account which athlete had the most hits in the previous round, the Gold Medal narrowly escaped her.

“I’m just happy I made the Junior Olympic team,” says Grace. “I’ve worked so hard for this, and it was the best week of my life.”

Her spot on the Junior National Team will provide opportunities for national competition experience and future development. Grace was excited about the free ammunition given to her for training, the opportunities to compete at the national level and for the special USA jacket that she was awarded.

When asked her hopes for the future, Grace responds, “I’d like to keep my position on the Junior National Team, which expires after one year, and win it again. My goal is to make the National Team, which gets to try out for the Olympics!” ™

Elizabeth Johnson Clark ’00, chair of this year’s Holiday House event, continues a leadership tradition of many “Mount Girls” that have come before her. Chairing Holiday House, the primary fundraiser for the Junior League of Little Rock, involves planning and implementation of the event called the “shopping event of the season.” The four-day shopping extravaganza features several special events and 180 specialty merchants from across the United States, generates over 80% of league funds and draws nearly 18,000 people each year.

Elizabeth laughs, “Holiday House is on my mind 24/7, and I am always on the lookout for creative ways to make the event even more successful than it has been in the past. I am bringing some new ideas … such as a tween fashion show and some big ticket raffles.”

Elizabeth says that since joining the Junior League seven years ago, she has served as Holiday House business manager and logistics chair. And she’s not the first graduate of Mount St. Mary to step up to tackle the volunteer duties of the event chair, which include overseeing 10 different subcommittees and making final decisions on details such as merchant selection, set-up, decorations, and marketing. She lists three others to serve as chair since 2003 — Shannon Benafield Aston ’85, Tonya Stringer Franzetti ’92 and last year’s Melissa Camferdam Ortega ’97, who prepped Elizabeth for her new role.

When asked about the connection between Mount St. Mary and volunteering for the Junior League of Little Rock, Elizabeth remarks, “Mount taught me that you get a lot out of giving to others. There is such joy in serving those around you and helping to make your home a better place. As an MSM student, I was able to experience this joy first-hand, and I would say that the Mercy Values have helped shape my adult life. The JLLR is dedicated to improving the community through volunteerism, and I really don’t think I would be so focused on serving others had I not gone to Mount!” ™

“The best antiques are old friends” reads a sign in the Harry Hastings Museum, a fitting backdrop for the annual Catholic High School and Mount St. Mary Academy Half Century Club Reunion, celebrating its sixth year since the group formed in 2009. The Half Century Club Reunion offers classes celebrating 50 years or more since graduation the chance to get reacquainted with old friends and gives them a reason to make contact with their high schools and see what changes are being made to meet the needs of the current students they serve. This year’s Half Century Club Reunion will be October 24-25 with a Friday lunch and a Saturday Mass and dinner at Christ the King.

The two schools hold a special place in the hearts of Harry Hastings Jr. (CHS ‘45) and Rosalyn Jones Hastings (MSM ‘48). Their two sons and four of their grandsons graduated from Catholic High School and their daughter, Cathy Hastings Owen ’76 and two of their granddaughters, Sara Owen ’10 and Ali Hastings ’13, graduated from Mount St. Mary.

Rosalyn and Harry credit a dedicated volunteer committee made up of MSM and CHS alumni as the reason the Half Century event has continued since 2009, but each year the Hastings host the Friday event of the Half Century

Club Reunion at their family museum to help set the tone for looking back to the past and things remembered.

When people ask Harry what all he has in the Hastings’ museum, he replies, “You name it.” Part of the fun on Friday is touring the museum and hearing the history of all the pieces Harry has collected over the course of his life, some of which include a 100-year-old hand-cranked Japanese fly trap, cash registers and grocery scales with a maximum transaction of $1 (from the days when you could buy two pounds of flour for a penny) and a souvenir harmonica given out to passengers of the Hindenburg — the German airship whose fiery landing claimed 36 lives in New Jersey in 1937. In addition to an assortment of motorcycles, antique automobiles, tools, printing presses, typewriters and farm equipment, Harry still owns the boat in which he courted Rosalyn during weekends at the lake, along with a 1947 Spartan Royal Mansion — their first RV used for many a family vacation.

The memories of their high school years add to the shared experiences of Half Century Club members. Harry chuckles and says that he enjoyed the all-boys environment at Catholic High. “I could keep my mind on my lessons,” he recollects. It was a different time — going to school during war time — and

Harry remembers rations on gasoline and the faculty being the only ones on campus with automobiles. Among the memorabilia in the museum, Harry’s class photo shows a graduating class of 28 young men, many whom they lost in World War II.

Rosalyn and her three sisters attended Mount St. Mary Academy, as did their mother — a 1923 graduate. Rosalyn speaks of her time as a day student at the school and remembers Sr. Frances, who talked her into taking three years of French at “St. Mary’s”, and Sr. Mark, who taught algebra. She says she loved wearing the Mount St. Mary Academy uniform and recalls riding the streetcar to school each day.

When asked why the Half Century Club Reunion came about, Harry answers, “So many have a 50-year reunion, and that’s it. People know the people before them in school and behind them in school. We said that it would be nice to have one for all of the classes celebrating 50 years or more to bring old friends back together.” And as they look to the future? The couple says, “This reunion has been a source of school spirit between the schools, to carry on the good ol’ days. We see this down the line as being a very strong Catholic organization — the senior citizens of Catholic High and St. Mary’s for the future.” ™

Estate Gift Ensures Legacy of Math, Science for MSM

The late Margaret Rose Hogan, a Mount St. Mary Academy

alumna from the Class of 1950 and long-time

supporter of the school, left a final gift to her MSM family with a bequest of nearly $390,000 to Mount St. Mary Foundation. Rose helped build, staff,

and manage the library at UAMS in Little Rock for

24 years. Throughout her life, she whole-heartedly

supported her alma mater, donating thousands of books as well

as her diploma from the Class of 1950. Her desire for future students to receive a foundational education will impact countless young women.

The gift is designated to endowed faculty compensation for the math and science departments. “Skilled and dedicated teachers are essential to our pursuit of academic excellence, and we are extremely grateful to Rose for her generosity,” Director of Advancement Kirsten Dickins explained. “Her generous gift illustrates an act of selflessness and foresight which will enable Mount St. Mary to advance our mission by enabling us to retain and attract exceptional teachers and faculty.”

Mount St. Mary established the 1851 Society to honor and recognize those who have invested in the Mount’s mission and future through their planned gifts. Planned giving is an important way to leave a legacy for future generations of Mount St. Mary students. Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, was able to start the first Mercy school on Baggot Street in Dublin, Ireland in 1827 with a one million dollar bequest from her employers. We invite you to join in Catherine’s legacy by establishing your own planned gift to ensure that future generations of young women have an opportunity to receive the quality education rich in Mercy values that Mount St. Mary has offered since her founding. Individuals interested in becoming a member of the 1851 Society should contact Kirsten Dickins in the Foundation Office at 664-8006. ™

Memorial Garden Celebrates Many Gifts of Sharing and Life

hank you to all the hard-working volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and grabbed a shovel for the most recent green space added to the Mount St. Mary campus — The Jennifer Boccarossa ’01 Memorial Garden. The Class of 2014 graciously donated funds from their senior class gift to honor the memory of the beloved MSM music instructor.

During the month of June, volunteers including members of the Dads’ Club, students, faculty and alumnae cleared the space near the front entrance of Mount St. Mary and planted trees, shrubs and grasses that will accompany benches and a memorial fountain for students to enjoy for the 2014-2015 school year. Thank you, especially, to Lauren Clark (MSM parent) and the campus beautification committee, and to all the volunteers and donors who have shared their gifts of time and treasure for the memorial garden in support of the Boccarossa family. ™
