Three international airports, Berlin Branden-
burg International, Leipzig and Dresden, the
main rail links and A 13 and A 15 highways
provide you with fast connections to Berlin, to
Dresden, capital of the state of Saxony, and
to Germany’s seaports.
Numerous regional airfields mean you can
take off and land almost from your doorstep
(Welzow EDCY/EDUY).
Major Polish industrial areas are also just a
few hours’ drive away.
Spremberg – connected with the wider world

welcome to Spremberg, a regional growth centre
Welcome to Spremberg, which has at-
tracted companies and investors for
centuries with its unique range of indus-
trial know-how and local acceptance
of industry. This tradition is founded in
the area’s favourable location in the
south of Brandenburg between Berlin
and Dresden, in the region’s rich re-
sources, and in the entrepreneurial ini-
tiative of its people.
Impressive industrial know-how and
acceptance of industry
Conditions are now excellent for industries
establishing themselves here, so Spremberg
has positioned itself as a regional growth
centre. This status means that companies
operating here profit from the best possible
funding and support. We also keep operating
costs low by offering investors comprehen-
sive, low-cost infrastructure in our industrial
park. The area’s existing business infrastruc-
ture offers you a range of clear advantages.
In the “Schwarze Pumpe” industrial park you
will find the kinds of industrial properties and
cost-effective media that are becoming in-
creasingly rare in Germany. Europe‘s most
modern coal-fired power plant is also here.
The area can also offer you eminently quali-
fied workers, who are experienced in industri-
al production and ready and willing to work
within a shift system, as well as low labour
costs. Major industries, such as the energy
and energy technologies industries, plastics,
chemicals, the paper industry and increasing-
ly also silicon production, make up Sprem-
berg’s industrial profile. Copper mining and
processing will also influence the region’s fu-
ture development dynamic.
Many renowned industrial enterprises are
already settled in Spremberg, among them
Vattenfall Europe AG, Papierfabrik Hamburger
Rieger GmbH & Co. KG, Siemens AG, BEA
Elektrotechnik und Automation Technische
Dienste Lausitz GmbH, Schmid Pilot Produc-
tion GmbH (SSP), Knauf Deutsche Gipswerke
KG, Linde AG and ThyssenKrupp Xervon
GmbH.
Family-friendly, with a wide range of
educational and training opportunities
It’s no coincidence that Spremberg is called
“the pearl of Lausitz”. Spremberg’s range
of educational and cultural institutions and
attractive landscape ensure that its 25,000
inhabitants enjoy a very high quality of life.
The region provides comprehensive con-
tinuing and advanced training and educa-
tion to fit all needs. Highly qualified personnel
are trained and educated at the Branden-
burgische Technische Universität Cottbus
(Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus),
Technische Universität Dresden (Dresden
Technical University), Technische Universität
Bergakademie Freiberg (Bergakademie Freib-
erg Technical University) and at various tech-
nical colleges in the area.
With its diverse range of social institutions for
residents, especially for children and families,
various recreational opportunities and a good
supply of attractive housing, Spremberg has
become established as a truly outstanding
“family-friendly community”.
Could Spremberg also be the ideal location
for your company? Come and see us and
we’ll be happy to convince you that it is!

Impressive prospects:
Funding, incentives, low labour costs, and a skilled workforce
Low labour and operating costs
Labour costs are extremely competitive in
Spremberg, averaging 19.76 euros an hour in
manufacturing industries. Comparable labour
costs in West German states are 33.59 euros
(Source: Zukunftsagentur Brandenburg ZAB,
2006, and IW Köln, 2007).
The annual average increase in hourly labour
costs in the manufacturing industries is also
at the lower end of international rankings, at
2.4 percent.
These low unit labour costs mean that Sp-
remberg offers investors an excellent price-
performance ratio with regard to labour costs
and productivity. Operating costs are also
comparatively low here. Media infrastructure
is already up and running in the “Schwarze
Pumpe” industrial park and our systems are
highly failsafe.
A qualified, loyal and motivated
workforce on hand
Spremberg’s ongoing industrial tradition
means that workers in the region are ready
and willing to work in a shift system and
are highly motivated and very loyal to their
employers.
Actors in the Spremberg regional growth
centre are pursuing a long-term strategy
of securing skilled personnel and industrial
know-how locally and intensifying measures
carried out in close cooperation with com-
panies, schools, training institutions, colleges
and universities so as to retain and further
qualify skilled workers.
The region’s many institutions also offer fur-
ther qualification programmes for the availa-
ble workforce. In cooperation with these insti-
tutions, ongoing qualification measures for
skilled staff can be individually adapted to
meet your company’s needs. We’ll be happy
to put you in contact with the partners you
need in this area.
Spremberg – where induStry’S at home
The substantial deposits of brown coal,
ores, copper ore and raw materials near the
Earth’s surface here mean that the economic
structure of Spremberg and of the whole
region is dominated by the energy industries.
A Vattenfall Europe AG brown coal power sta-
tion with two 800 MW units is located here
and feeds energy into the power grid. The re-
gion is also home to the world’s first low CO2-
emission power plant, a unique pilot project.
Energy industry
Its substantial deposits
of brown coal and long
tradition of coal mining
and processing since
1850 mean that the Sp-
remberg region can offer
significant advantages
to the local energy industry. Suitable infra-
structure and the skills of its workforce make
Spremberg the first choice in the Lausitz en-
ergy region for energy companies such as
Vattenfall Europe AG and Alpiq Energie Deut-
schland.
Paper and packaging
The relocation of Ham-
burger Rieger GmbH &
Co. KG, part of Austria’s
Prinzhorn Holding, to
the “Schwarze Pumpe”
industrial park and the
start of production
in 2005 has created a cluster of raw paper
corrugated cardboard production and pro-
cessing industries that are now producing
products meeting the highest technical stand-
ards.
The plastics processing and chemical
industries
Plastics processing, es-
pecially thermosetting
plastics for decorative
and technical purposes,
has a long local tradition.
Among the location‘s
vital factors for these in-
dustries are the high levels of technical skills
among the area’s qualified workers and state-
of-the-art production methods. SPRELA
GmbH, Hippe KG, Deutsche Biomethanolfab-
rik Schwarze Pumpe GmbH and Linde Gas
Produktionsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG are
just some of the companies taking advantage
of these benefits.
Silicon production and processing
The most important pri-
mary product in solar
cell manufacturing is
produced in Spremberg.
The production of mon-
osilane and polysilicon
by Schmid Pilot Produc-
tion GmbH (SSP) has opened up excellent
developmental opportunities for the area. This
highly sought-after and expensive primary
product forms the basis for a complete value-
added supply chain, which ends with com-
plete solar modules for end users.
Future copper mining
Copper is one of the
most important metals
for industrial manufac-
turing. The future of
copper mining opens up
entirely new develop-
ment opportunities for
the region. Preparations are currently under-
way to start mining and processing copper
ore in 2016.
Supported, diverse, successful:
the regional growth centre’s main industries
“The “Schwarze Pumpe” industrial park offers us almost perfect condi-tions. All the media we need is avail-able on very favourable terms. We’ve been able to build up a quali-fied, motivated and very loyal local workforce whose experience in indus-trial production processes is ever so apparent, and that at comparatively low labour costs and in a very short period of time. The subsidies for our investment and high levels of accep-tance in the area have also been a great help to us. Spremberg has be-come an established part of Prinzhorn Holding. We’re building on it.”
Julian Laux, authorized represen-tative of Hamburger Rieger GmbH & Co. KG Papierfabrik Spremberg and spokesman for the industrial park community
“Local actors have provided outstand-ing support for our project. Sprem-berg and the whole Lausitz region are also providing us with an excel-lent pool of skilled workers. The ex-perience and acceptance of industrial production in the area also means a great deal to us. This as well as the perfect infrastructure in Spremberg and Lausitz open up the best possible prospects for our company and for the people of the region.”
Dr. Thomas Lautsch, Managing Director, KSL Kupferschiefer Lausitz GmbH

A delightful landscape with wonderful
recreational possibilities
Spremberg lies in the scenic surroundings of
the Lausitz region, providing plenty of space
for a wide range of leisure activities.
The nearby Spreewald forest area offers
ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts.
A perfectly developed network of cycle paths
connects individual towns throughout the
entire Lausitz region, inviting you to discover,
relax and reflect.
The region‘s formerly massive open-cut
mines are currently being transformed to form
the Lausitzer Seenland (Lusitanian lakelands),
a unique chain of lakes linked by navigable
canals.
Our region will also soon offer a wide range
of sport, leisure, working and living options
on water and on land, which will be unique in
Europe and will enable you to live in a float-
ing house and use the water landing place
(EDUY) or the harbour facilities for your boat.
The Euro-Speedway Lausitz hosts top events
for motorsport fans, and really serious fans
can even test the track themselves. Winter
sports enthusiasts will find suitable slopes in
the Snowtropolis indoor ski resort, even in
summer.
Recreational areas such as the Spreewald,
the “Saxon Switzerland” and the Lausitz lakes
offer cultural highlights and unique natural
wonders that are known and loved all over
Germany.
Family-friendly, safe, liveable
Spremberg has made a family-friendly envi-
ronment one of its highest priorities. This has
led us to set up a fund to provide children
from less well-off families with financial sup-
port, enabling them to take advantage of
sport and recreational facilities. Another ex-
ample of this attitude at work is the “Familien-
freundliche Unternehmen” (“Family friendly
company”) competition, which seeks to in-
spire managers to make it easier for their
employees to balance the demands of both
work and a family.
Spremberg – a lifestyle gem
Spremberg offers a great diversity of housing,
ranging from maisonnettes on the outskirts
of town through to the town centre‘s imposing
urban villas and townhouses dating from the
previous century. The town’s inhabitants and
businesses have made creating and maintain-
ing an attractive, clean and safe residential
environment a top priority. With this goal in
mind, they joined forces to form the City-Wer-
bering-Spremberg e. V. association, which
has been successfully working for the town’s
inhabitants and retailers over many years.
Their activities‘ success in creating a more at-
tractive and liveable Spremberg is confirmed
by the number of people moving to the town
from the area, as well as by the national
awards it has won.
A wide range of education and culture
Inhabitants of the “Pearl of the Lausitz” enjoy
a high quality of life. Situated on the banks
of the River Spree, the townscape is charac-
terized by historic and modern buildings
as well as the green of its many parks. To the
north of the town, Spremberg Dam offers
various leisure activity options. The town’s re-
constructed palace lies in a park among rare
trees and is an inviting place to visit at any
time of year. A wide range of schools and
pre-schools in the town provide education for
all needs. In addition to its day-care centres
and primary schools, Spremberg is home to a
vocational college and the Erwin Strittmatter
Gymnasium (grammar school) as well as spe-
cial education schools. These schools have
all been completely renovated and are ideally
equipped.
There are many attractive recreational activi-
ties on offer for young and old. Traditional
town festivals are held throughout the year
and the local and regional cinemas and the
town’s theatre offer high-quality entertain-
ment.
A centre of science and research
Spremberg regional growth centre and the
whole Lausitz region are home to a diverse
range of high-quality educational and scientif-
ic institutions. Various Fraunhofer scientific in-
stitutes are connected with the Brandenburg
University of Technology Cottbus, institutes
which, with their focus on various areas
of applied research, maintain a continuous
exchange with companies in the region.
The area’s proximity to Berlin’s universities,
the Technische Universität Dresden (Dresden
Technical University), Technische Universität
Bergakademie Freiberg (Bergakademie
Freiberg Technical University) and the Hoch-
schule Lausitz (FH) (Lausitz University of Ap-
plied Sciences) opens up a great potential for
future highly qualified skilled workers in the
region.
But it will take a visit to our region for you to
decide which of its facets appeal to you most,
so we look forward to seeing you in Sprem-
berg!
