WHAT IS A SPORT?
Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants,
and in some cases, spectators.
KINDS OF SPORTS
Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.
INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
• An individual sport is a sport in which participants compete as individuals
• Examples of individual sports include running, judo, skiing and swimming.
TEAM SPORTS
A team sport includes any sport which involves players working together towards a shared objective.
A team sport is an activity in which a group of individuals, on the same team, work together to accomplish an ultimate goal which is usually to win.
THE OLYMPIC GAMES
• The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece as many as 3,000 years ago and were revived in the late 19th century.
• They have become the world’s preeminent sporting competition.
• From the 8th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D., the Games were held every four years in Olympia, in honor of the god Zeus.
THE OLYMPIC GAMES
The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, and featured 280 participants from 13 nations, competing in 43 events.
Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held separately and have alternated every two years.
