Pool League Standings By Ken McDowell Sports Editor MERINO – The Merino Rams picked up their first Plains Conference win of the year Friday in 8-man football action with a 30- 22 home victory over the Sedgwick County Cougars. Merino, ranked fifth in 8-man football this week, improves to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Sedgwick County drops to number 8 this week in 8-man football, and dips to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Rams played without their leading rusher on offense, senior Marcelino Baptista, in Friday’s win over Sedgwick County. Baptista rolled his ankle in the 20-12 loss at Akron on Sept. 26 and did not carry the ball against Sedgwick County Thursday. Therefore, the Rams used a variety of running backs and went to the air more often on the arm of senior quarterback Curtis Tappy, who was 7-fort-15 for 79 yards. Merino led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 22-14 at halftime. Neither team reached paydirt in the third quarter and in the final frame added 8 each to make the final tally of 30-22 in favor of the Rams. Merino rushed for 245 yards, led by senior Jorden Jole with 82 yards on 24 carries; Tappy had 14 carries for 55 yards and a TD: sophomore Dylan Clifford 46 yards on 9 carries while scoring 3 touchdowns; junior Ace Conger 44 yards on 9 carries; sophomore Wyatt Barton 10 yards on 3 carries and junior Logan Redabaugh 8 yards on 1 carry. Redabaugh had 5 catches for 69yards and Jole 2 receptions for 10 yards. “Our offensive line did a great job blocking,” said Merino Coach Marlan Tramp. “We threw the ball more than we have in the past, and Tappy did a good job finding the open receivers. We had a more balanced offense.” On defense senior Jaxson Hastings led Merino in tackles with 13; Baptista did contribute heavily with 12 tackles; senior Trace Elliott 11 and Tappy, Jole and Barton 10 each. Tappy and Jole each had an interception and Elliott recovered a Sedgwick County fumble as the Rams forced 3 big turnovers. Merino will travel to Greeley Saturday for a 1 p.m. Plains Conference battle against the Dayspring Christian Eagles. Dayspring, the defending 8-man state champion, boasts a 6-0 overall mark and 2-0 in the conference. The Eagles remain the top-ranked team in 8-man football this week. Tramp reported that Baptista, who has 598 yards rushing in 5 games this year, will return to the offensive backfield this Saturday. “This will be a tough game for us and we will have to play well,” Tramp added. “So far this year Dayspring has handled its opponents pretty easy and has handled the challenge against the tough teams like Caliche. “They are a physical team and are well coached, but I think we can match up with them pretty good.” Freshman Kevin Blanco (10) of the Northeastern Junior College (NJC) Plainsmen soccer team battles against a Trinidad State Junior College de- fender in a recent match at the Sterling High School (SHS) Soccer Field.
