Sports By Ken McDowell Sports Editor Area basketball fans had the opportunity to get a first look at the 2013-14 Northeastern Junior College (NJC) Plainswomen basketball team last weekend in the Ramada Classic held in the Bank of Colorado Event Center. Under the direction of first- year Head Coach Dave Huss, the Plainswomen opened the tournament Friday against Iowa Western College and lost by a 72- 67 score, but came back Friday to post a convincing 91-54 victory over Northwest Kansas Technical College. NJC is 2-2 in the early part of the season. In the game Friday against Iowa Western, NJC trailed 33-28 at halftime and in the second half both teams played even by scoring 39 points each, which wasn’t enough for the Plainswomen to rally for the victory. Freshmen Brooke Blair and Arianne Sheka each scored 14 points to lead NJC, freshman Meg Pritchard 12, freshman Janae Bailey 10, freshman Philippa Faul 7, sophomore Tiffany Mines 4, sophomore Jordan Bishop and freshmen Shalamar Adkinson 2 apiece and freshmen Leah Cheney 1. NJC was pout-rebounded 46- 31 with Sheka grabbing 8 boards, Pritchard 6 and Mines 5. Bishop, Blair, Mines and Sheka each had 2 assists while Bishop and Blair had 2 steals apiece. NJC did commit 21 turnovers while handing the ball over only 10 times. Blair was 2-for- 5 from 3-point range. In Saturday’s win over Northwest Kansas Technical College, Sheka led the way with 14 points, Pritchard 10, Blair 9, Bishop, Bailey and Faul 8 each, freshman Sydney Jacox 6, Cheney, sophomore Carle Cortez-Walser and freshman Jau’nae Peevy 5 apiece, Mines and Adkinson 4 each, freshman Kelsie Schaefer 3 and freshman Alex Zehnder 2. Sheka grabbed 5 rebounds, Schaefer and Jacox had 2 assists each and Blair had 4 steals. Jacox hit a pair of treys and one each for Blair, Mines, Cortez-Walser, Peevy and Cheney. “I feel we are playing extremely well for a young team,” Huss observed. “We played a very talented Iowa Western team down to the buzzer and the week before lost to a Gillette, Wyo., team by 4 points that has 7 sophomores on their squad. “We are playing great defense and are giving ourselves a chance to win. The freshmen are coming along very well and the 4 sophomores that we have are being great leaders and doing some great things for this team.” Huss added that NJC has some tough games ahead as the Plainswomen will compete in the Casper, Wyo., Invitational Tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The tournament will resume on Nov. 21 and 23. On Thursday NJC will play North Idaho, on Friday the Plainswomen will take on Eastern Utah and on Saturday will battle Casper. On Thurs., Nov. 21 NJC will play Colorado Springs Christian JV before wrapping up the tournament Sat., Nov. 23 against Casper. Lear knocked down 3 treys and Moton and Uke 2 apiece. “Our team is very deep this year and we have been playing 12 kids every game,” said NJC Coach Eddie Trenkle. “The depth has really helped in games where a lot of fouls are called because we have so many guys that can play. “This team has a lot of experience on the floor with scoring and rebounding. We are also averaging 50 rebounds per- game which means our guys are buying into what we are saying about owning the glass.” NJC will compete in the Sheridan, Wyo., Tournament Friday and Saturday and will play at home Tuesday for the first time against ABCD Prep. In the Sheridan Tournament Friday NJC will play Little Big Horn, Mont., College and on Saturday will take on Sheridan, who is ranked 21 st in the nation. “We will be tested heavily heading into the Sheridan Tournament,” Trenkle predicted. “We are excited to play Little Big Horn the first day then Sheridan the second day. “This will be our sixth road game so we should feel right at home on the road.” The City of Sterling Recreation Division is currently accepting registrations for a new adult basketball league for Co-Ed teams.
