TABLE OF CONTENTSA Message From Mayor Vandewal:

The 2021 edition of the Community Services & Activity Guide is unlike any other; what remains the same is the evolution of this wonderful source of information for living well here in South Frontenac. While much of what is in this

guide will depend on the public health recommendations surrounding COVID-19 at the time, we encourage you to read through the programs, clubs, services, and businesses that are available in our community and that make South Frontenac a dynamic place to call home.

Council continues to works towards the vision of the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan; Natural, vibrant and growing - a progressive rural leader. For recreation and leisure, there are many exciting projects on the horizon, such as the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Master Plan. This plan will guide recreation in the Township for years to come and provide direction for Council, Township staff, and the Recreation Committees. Large capital projects are also scheduled for this year, including renovations at the Frontenac Community Arena, and the development of a new multi-use facility at Centennial Park in Harrowsmith.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of us to shift our focus and perspectives. The importance of family, friends, and a healthy community is more relevant than ever, we hope this guide is helpful in your pursuit of wellness here in South Frontenac.

Mayor Ron Vandewal, Township of South Frontenac613-376-3027 ext. 2236

Recreation Supervisor’s MessageThe past year has created unique challenges for

community recreation and leisure. Many of our traditional activities have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Township and our community partners have had to adapt and offer programs and events in a different way, I am pleased too see our community step up to the challenge. From the drive through Santa Parade hosted by the Harrowsmith S&A Club to the new house decorating contests, we have found new ways to stay connected.

We are also looking ahead with the development of our Recreation, Parks and Leisure Master Plan, I encourage every resident to get involved and help shape the Plan. Visit https://www.southfrontenac.net/RPLmasterplan/ for more information.

What will come for the rest of 2021 is still unclear, but what is certain is that our community will continue to work together to offer safe and accessible recreation opportunities for all.Tim Laprade, Arena/Recreation Supervisor 613-376-3027 ext. 2231

Please contact the groups and organisations directly to confirm the programs listed below as some of them will change over the rest of 2021. Check the Frontenac News each week, Frontenacnews.ca, Frontenac-live.ca or Southfrontenac.net for specific event listings. The Frontenac News would like to thank the business owners and community volunteers listed in the 2021 South Frontenac Recreation and Activity Guide for their cooperation.

We hope you’ve all been safe and having fun this year! We miss you all so much and can’t wait to

see you as soon as we can!-CampCouncillorRileyR.

The Township of South Frontenac has made the difficult decision to cancel Swim and Day Camp programs for the 2021 season due to the ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19. This is the second season of traditional Township summer programs to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

Normally our program is a place where children and youth belong, grow, thrive and lead. Children ages 4-12 are welcome to join our enthusiastic, energetic, caring staff members in a safe environment that encourages children to realize their potential and follow their dreams. We cannot wait to welcome Campers, Swimmers and Staff back when it is safe to do so.

tin tea Set: Shall I Put the Kettle on?Written by: Sam Nicholls

A common toy in modern and historic households is the tea set. This particular tea set is made of tin and was manufactured and marketed by the Ohio Art Company

that produced colourful tea sets and drums after World War 1. It was not uncommon to see other traditional sets made of porcelain or ceramic and today, children’s tea sets are predominantly made from plastic.

The introduction of the tea set as a popular toy for young girls emerged as early as the 16th century (1500s), although the material they were made from varied. Previously seen in European countries such as France and Germany, the tea sets’ rise in popularity came in the 19th century (1800s) in places such as Europe,

Britain and the newly established North American colonies. Wealthier families gifted daughters delicate and decorated tea sets on birthdays and holidays, encouraging these young girls to hold tea parties for dollies, teddy bears and friends.

Afternoon tea (also known as High Tea) is now a long-standing tradition in Britain. Its establishment is credited to Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford (England), in the year 1840. As Britain began to establish colonies in Canada, this tradition continued within colonial settlements because of its recall and relationship to England, the original home of colonizers. Gifting a tea set not only instilled a sense of pride and connection to England; it also prepared young girls for their upcoming roll as a woman in Canadian society.

Hosting a pretend tea for their dolls and friends allowed daughters to prepare themselves for domestic life. As part of their role as the housewife, adult women would host tea’s for other local women. In wealthier and urban communities, afternoon tea was an event in which ladies of the town would be invited to and was an opportunity to dress up and exhibit delicate and refined manners. In more rural communities, afternoon tea was a little less formal, but nonetheless a significant event that would allow women to take a break from their domestic chores and engage with other women in their communities.

Gifting a young girl a tea set was a marker of the role she would take on in society. It would allow her to engage in imaginative play, while teaching her the responsibilities of motherhood and the entertaining of guests. The images featured on the tin tea set of the South Frontenac Museum also emphasize some of the roles a girl child would be expected to take on – caring for children through the play with a doll and sharing toys with other boys and girls, therefore emphasizing the care she has for her community.

South Frontenac Museum – Have you ever wondered about that classic stone schoolhouse on Road 38 at the Hartington crossroad just north of Harrowsmith? Are you curious about why people settled in this area, and how they lived before electricity, cars or running water? Did you ever find yourself looking for something to do with the kids on a rainy afternoon at the cottage?

The Museum is owned by the Township of South Frontenac and managed by the South Frontenac Museum Society. We have artifacts, photographs, documents and stories of our earliest indigenous

peoples and later settlers through the logging and mining boom years to the home life, family histories, architecture and schools of our farming communities.

We invite families to come for a fascinating interactive experience. We offer programming all summer and can accommodate groups and school classes, with prior notice.

The Museum Society is made up of local residents. We need people of all sorts of skills and interests: storytelling, preservation and archiving, greeting visitors, helping research and plan special interest displays and programs related to local architecture, mining, genealogy, and details of daily living, etc. We welcome new members and volunteers who want to be a part of our future to come and join our team.

Cataraqui Trail - This trail is suitable for walkers, cyclists, horseback riders, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. The trail runs for approximately 39 kilometres in South Frontenac. It originates from Smiths Falls, passes by Chaffeys Locks and along the northern side of Sydenham Lake before connecting with the K & P Trail just east of Harrowsmith. It continues westward, past Harrowsmith and ends in Strathcona. Its surface consists, in part, of stone dust between Loughborough-Portland Boundary Road and Harrowsmith, plus a small section west of Hogan Road. The remainder is loose gravel more suitable to cyclists on a mountain or hybrid bike. The eastern section provides the best vista because of the numbers of ponds and small lakes in a very natural environment. Info. Cataraquitrail.ca.

K & P Trail - This trail originates from Kingston and enters South Frontenac at Orser Road. It merges with the Cataraqui Trail just east of Harrowsmith for about two km then splits to go north up to Tichborne for a total of 50 kilometres to Sharbot Lake where it links to

the Great Trail. Its surface consists of mostly stone dust suitable for most bikes and is relatively flat. Because it is mainly going parallel to Highway 38, it is easily accessible in many areas and is close to facilities along the route. Information – A virtual tour, with photos of 80 locations along the trail between Orser Road and the point where the trail leaves South Frontenac at Tichborne, can be found at frontenacmaps.ca/tour/#

Rideau Trail - This hiking rail which links Kingston to Ottawa, meanders across South Frontenac from south to northeast for about 80 Km. It enters South Frontenac via the K & P Trail then joins the Cataraqui Trail, heading

east to Sydenham before jogging north towards Knowlton Lake and the Gould Lake Conservation Area. After passing Frontenac Park and Perth Road, it crosses the Cataraqui Trail again twice, going east then north before exiting the township at Bedford Mills. It is accessible from many points and provides a very good view of the natural forest habitat within the township. Ideal for active people who want to stay fit. The Rideau Trail Association organizes excursions throughout the year for members. Information – rideautrail.org/discover-the-trail/maps includes 19 downloadable maps of the Rideau Trail between Kingston and Ottawa. Maps 1 through 5 go through South Frontenac.

DRIVE SloW In thE SnoW• BENICEONTHEICE: Give yourself twice the space

between vehicles and pedestrians. Stopping distance on ice is double that of a dry road

• GOSLOWINTHESNOW: Slow down and drive according to weather conditions, not the speed limit

• IT’SNOTARACE,GIVEPLOWSPACE:Snow plows are extra wide and can create clouds of snow – both of which reduce visibility and increase the risk of collision. It’s best to wait for the plow to pull over before you pass.

To familiarize yourself with how our Public Services Department manage the winter road conditions, our Winter Control Plan can be found at www.southfrontenac.net under Winter Maintenance.

Sand for sidewalks, driveways etc. may be found at the entrances to each of Public Services in the winter. (Max - 2-5 gallon pails per resident please). Our Patrol Yard locations are as follows:Keeley Road Patrol Yard Bedford Patrol Yard2490 Keeley Road 1389 Westport Road
