December 6,2012 Sports 15 Girls’ basketball starts strong Swimmers represent XHS The Saints girls’ basketball team is off to a strong start after winning three games in a row.. The Saints’ season opener game was held on Tuesday, November 20 at Xavier, hosting Decorah. Senior Kayla Armstrong led the offensive attack for the team with 14 points. The Saints started the season off on a positive note after defeating Decorah 63-12. “Right now we are discovering our strengths and weaknesses with the goal of being a well-rounded team in February,” Armstrong said. On Saturday, November 24, the Saints went up against Johnson. The game was a non-conference game and was held at Xavier High School. The Saints came out of the game on top winning 46-33. Freshman McKenna Andersen gathered 13 points, senior Ashley Stulken collected 10 points and 12 rebounds, and senior Sarah Dickes had 7 steals for the team. The Saints hosted Waterloo East on Tuesday, November 27 in a Mississippi Valley Conference game. The Saints beat Waterloo East 86-18 with junior Hayley Deutmeyer ending the game with 13 points, Dickes with 12, and Anderson with 11. “We are working This year Xavier has many male students swimming for other area high schools because Xavier does not have a swim team. Nick Durin, Mitch Anderson, and Carlos Negrin swim for Washington High School, while Jacob Nachman, Evan Bednar, Jonah Scallon, Nick Lyon, Hunter Didriksen, and two-year captain John Richardson swim for Kennedy. “It’s an honor to be selected as a captain at another school, and I am hoping the core of seniors who have been swimming together for four years will work together and make the season something special,” senior Richardson said. Both Richardson and Durin qualified for State last year, and this year they will attempt to do the same. Richardson started out his season on a positive note. He won the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard medley relay, and he placed 2 nd in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Kennedy went on to win the meet against Iowa City High. Richardson also won the 300-yard backstroke relay, to get in a good rhythm and iron out some rough spots so we can ultimately make a good run in the post season,” Dickes said. The Saints battled for a win against Iowa City High on Friday, November 30 at Iowa City High in their second Mississippi Valley Conference game. Freshman Lizzy Bailey, Andersen, and Deutmeyer each shot a three-pointer giving the Saints three three-point goals. Stulken led Xavier with nine points. Iowa City came out with the victory winning 56-36. “We get along on and off the court. We also have a range of different grades on the team and unique personalities which keeps the games, team dinners, and time together interesting,” Armstrong said. The Saints are now ranked 4 th in class 4A. The Xavier girls’ team competed on Tuesday, December 4 against Dubuque Senior at home and play again tomorrow, December 7 at Dubuque Hempstead; game time is 6 p.m.. breaking the J-Hawk Relay meet record, and placed 2 nd in the 400-yard medley relay and 400- yard freestyle relay. This year, Durin’s biggest goal is to help Washington claim its 50 th consecutive district championship. “My goals for the season are to go to State, and place high enough to score points for my team. I believe that my teammates have a lot of potential this year,” junior Durin said. Durin participates in the 100-yard butterfly, 100- yard breaststroke, the 100-yard medley relay, and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Both teams will participate in a few meets over the next couple of weeks and hope to continue improving. Washington’s next meet will be on December 11, at Bettendorf, and Kennedy will participate on December 8, at the Bobcat Relays in Marshalltown. The Saints girls’ basketball team is off to a strong start after winning three games in a row.. The Saints’ season opener game was held on Tuesday, November 20 at Xavier, hosting Decorah. Senior Kayla Armstrong led the offensive attack for the team with 14 points.
