CONNEAUT - This season’s edition of the GenevaEagle football team certainly can take advantage of turn-overs.

Two weeks ago the Eagles forced four Edgewood mis-cues and scored four times.

Friday in Conneaut, the Eagles scored three timeson Spartan mistakes enroute to a 61-0 shutout.

Geneva welcomed back Cody Morrow and gave himthe ball on their initial series. The Eagles marcheddownfield with Morrow going the last ten yards for thescore. Hugo Reyes kicked the first of seven extra pointsand it was 7-0 at the six minute mark.

On Conneaut’s first series, linebacker Tim Kirkstepped in front of a Spartan pass and returned it 21yards for a TD at 5:02.

One minute later, on Conneaut’s first down play, Kirkagain pulled down a pass and took it 29 yards for thescore.

The Spartans were unable to move the ball on theirnext series and prepared to punt. The wet ball wentthrough punter Aaron Bower’s hands but Bowers wasable to fall on the ball at his own one yard line.

On the first Geneva play, Tim Costello plunged overfor the score and at 3:43 of the first quarter the Eagleshad a 27-0 lead.

“Turnovers will always be a part of the learning pro-cess in football. They cost us big time last week atJefferson. they carried us to a win at Edgewood and to-night. I never would have believed we would get threeof them returned for touchdowns. Tim Kirk was greatin seeing those balls coming his way and I thought ourdefense really stepped up which is what you want kidsto do. Kyle Woerner scored on a fumble for the secondtime this year and we had a lot of kids get after it to-night. I am proud of the kids the way we came backafter a loss last week.Conneaut came out and hit us butwe never let them get in the game,” Eagles Coach TonyHassett praised his team.

The Eagle onslaught continued in the second period. After a short Spartan punt, the visitors took over insideConneaut territory. On the first play Cody Morrow ranaround left end for 30 yards and a score.

Conneaut moved the ball to midfield on a pass recep-tion by Tyler Rose but on the next play Kyle Woernerscooped up a fumble and went fifty yards for the score, his second TD fumble recovery of the season.

On their next possession the host Spartans did movethe ball, gaining a first down by freshman running backTroy Colucci but their mistakes continued. Scott Warnerintercepted a pass and weaved his way to the Spartan13. QB Bandon Pakkala scored on the next play, goingthe distance around right end for the TD.

The half ended with the Eagles holding a 47-0 ad-vantage.

After the intermission, the Eagle QB completed a passto receiver Marshall LaRiche deep into Spartans terri-tory. Morrow ran the last 20 yards for the score.

“We came out in the second half and Pakkala hitLaRiche with a nice pass. The line did a nice job on theblast (run) and we were able to get everyone in thegame,” Hassett added.

The Spartans threatened in the final period. After anice return by Brandon Luce and yards gained by TroyCollucci, the hosts advanced deep into Eagle land. A passby freshman QB Nick Root fell short at the Eagle 20and the visitors took over. While the Spartans defensegave up territory grudgingly, the Eagles pushed theirway downfield. Freshman Henry Schnars went aroundright end for ten yards for a Geneva TD,making the fi-nal 61-0.

Despite missing five starters with injury, there weresome bright spots for the Spartans. Tyler Rose and Bran-don Luce returned kickoffs for good yardage and fresh-man Troy Colucci had some nice gains.

In the trenches the Spartans certainly held their ownon the lines but their own mistakes kept giving theEagles the ball.

“We started three freshmen, Gary Duris started andplayed both ways,”Conneaut Coach Rocco Dobran com-mented.

“Offensively we have to learn to be disciplined andplay mistake free. For example, the QB has to learnwhen to hold the ball, when to throw it away. We haveto prevent turnovers. It puts a damper on things whenwe come out of the gate down 28-0.The kids are learn-ing and starting to execute. The offense and defenseplayed their hearts out. We had to play a lot of substi-tutes who made rookie mistakes but the kids playedhard,” Dobran summed up his team’s performance.

Geneva improves to 2-1, while Conneaut falls to 0-3.On the stat sheet, Cody Morrow returned to action

with 13 carries for 88 yards.Shane Herter added 12 car-ries for 47, Brandon Pakkala, 3-15, Joey Jay, 8-14 and

Henry Schnars with the ten yard TD run.For the Spartans, Troy Collucci ran ten times for 52

yards, Tyler Rose added 8 carries for 4 and Trey Sistrunkhad two totes for 18.

In the air, Pakkala completed one pass for 29 yardsfor the Eagles.

Aaron Bowers had two completions in 8 attempts fortwo yards, Sam Distelrath had one completion in fourattempts for 14 and Nick Root was 0-1.

Marshall Lariche caught the Geneva pass for 29yards. Tyler Rose hauled in two passes for 17 and Jack-son Distelrarth caught one pass for no gain.

This week, Geneva hosts South while Conneaut willhost Ledgemont.

The teams traded winsin the first four games,Madison winning gameone, 25-12, Conneaut re-turning the favor in gametwo, 25-12.

Both teams battled, div-ing to dig the ball off thefloor, over head saves out-of-bounds, taking balls offthe net and returningthem.

Madison won gamethree, 25-21 then Conneautevened the score 25-19.

Neither team couldmove ahead by more than4 or 5 points. Teams ex-changed short runs thatkept the score close andeach team made mistakesthat kept them from mov-ing too far ahead.

Streaks hold on for victory

Madison volleyball players Taylor Goudy (14) and RileyRiehl, (13) try to block a return.

“One of our strengthswith this team is our serv-ing. We went through someshort stretches where wedidn’t make good decisionswith placing the ball but Iwould have to say thatserving problems were thebiggest culprit tonight. Youhave to make teams earntheir points and we had toomany serves into the netand too many deflections goagainst us tonight,”Conneaut Coach PaulStofan commented.

“Madison did a nice jobkeeping the ball alive aswell we we mishit the balla few times after they keptit alive. When you makemistakes that put you be-hind the eight ball, it istough to come back, you’realways climbing uphill andwe didn’t get it done,”Stofan added.

In the decisive gamefive, Haley Dake servedMadison to a 6-3 advan-tage. Then Riley Riehl fol-lowed after two sides-outand served her team to a 9-5 lead.

Conneaut slips to 3-2,Madison improves to 2-3, 0-3, PAC.

“It is difficult at timeswhen you’re playing an in-dependent schedule. Main-taining a sharp focus isn’teasy. I feel that motivationfor us should come fromwithin each girl when theyput on that shirt with theschool name on it. Youshould use that as motiva-tion, to play each match toget sharper as a team andyou play to strengthen fun-damentals. We had a fewdown times tonight thathurt but I am really proudof the effort the girls areputting out on the court. They work hard and I feelreally good about that,”Stofan concluded.
