CORVETTES OF FRESNO, INC Is a non-profit organization formed by those

owners who are proud to drive America’s only true sports car

THE CORVETTE

Our club meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the third Tuesday of the month at Yosemite Falls

Cafe 4020 North Cedar Between Dakota & Ashlan on the

East side of Cedar

If you are an interested Corvette owner, we invite you to attend.

The one time initiation fee is $30.00 and covers the cost of your Corvettes of Fresno

window sticker, membership directory, club by-laws, nametag

and many other goodies.

The annual dues are $95.00 per year per couple, or $77.00 per year per individual.

FIBERGLASS FOREVER IS A MONTHLY PUBLICATION.

PLEASE SUBMIT ARTICLES NO LATER THAN THE THIRD FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH VIA

EMAIL TO: [email protected]

The only external difference between the

1971 and 1972 Corvettes is the amber

front turn signals and chrome plating on the egg-crate grills on the 1972.

1972 was the only year for Corvette "Big

Block" engines in the 1968 to 1972 range

to have no horse power sticker on the air

cleaner lid.

Beginning in 1972 and continuing

thereafter, horsepower would be

measured as "net" rather than the less realistic "gross" ratings of earlier years.

"Pewter Silver" was only offered as an exterior color in 1972.

1972 was the only year air conditioning

was available with the LT1 engine and

since only 240 were so equipped, this combination is a rare find today.

Corvette Museum Offers Look at Vehicle Maintenance and Preservation Department

Taking care of the National Corvette

Museum’s ever-growing collection of

cars is a task that Daniel Decker

absolutely loves.

Who can argue with him? After all, what

mechanic wouldn’t enjoy special projects

like pulling and resealing the

transmission of the 2002 Corvette Z06

donated by Ivan and Mary Schrodt?

Or rebuilding the carburetor on the 1954 Corvette donated by Lori Hale in memory of her husband

Morey?

Or fixing the compressor on the 2003 50th Anniversary car donated by Craig and Sharon Conde?

Or repairing the internal broken axle shafts in the rear differential on the 1972 Corvette race car gifted

by Richard and Holly Anderson?

Well, you get the idea. The work goes on and on for Decker and the new Vehicle Maintenance and

Preservation Department at the Museum.

With the collection growing as well as the use of the donated ‘Vettes increasing, mostly the Z06s to

provide hot lap rides and lead touring laps at the nearby Motorsports Park, the Museum can definitely

use Decker’s talents to perform work on its cars that used to be outsourced.

Decker has a lot of equipment to use, including a Titan lift, fire-proof cabinets, a tool box donated by

Snap-On Tools, up-to-date scanner, electrical and air ceiling drops, updated tools, an engine hoist, motor

stand, and a tire changer and balancer from Coats.

Says Decker: “Everything is more conveniently located and it helps with the flow of getting cars in,

worked on and back out. We’re able to do the basic maintenance things like oil changes and tire rotation

as well as take care of more complex issues that arise.”

Page 25: SPONSORED BY HEDRICK'S CHEVROLETSeptember 8-11, 2016 Silver Legacy Resort Hotel & Casino - 407 N. Virginia St. Reno, Nevada ... Register by August 9, 2016 for Room Rate Guarantee EARLY

Visitors to the Museum can even sometimes watch Decker at work through a new glass garage door.

You can even help with the cost of the maintenance by making monthly payments (minimum of $25) to

the Museum.

Says one longtime enthusiast, George DuPont: “Long before there was a Maintenance and Preservation

Department at the Museum, I’ve been making automatic monthly donations toward that goal, hoping to

inspire others to do the same. Taking care of these cars properly in a dedicated area with the right

equipment and experienced staff is one of the most important things the NCM can do in their mission to

preserve the past of Corvette.”

Corvette Assembly Plant Receives Additional $290 Million Investment from GM

General Motors has announced this

morning that it will invest $290

million into the Bowling Green

Assembly Plant with the money going

to upgrade and modify the plant’s

vehicle assembly operations with new

technologies and processes.

The new investment is on top of the

$439 million currently being spent to build a new state-of-the-art paint shop which is slated to open in

April 2017.

Part of the new investment comes from the Kentucky Business Incentive (KBI). According to Bowling

Green Daily News, an investment totaling $153 million was included in an application with the KBI. On

Thursday, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority gave its preliminary approval to $3

million in incentives for the project which is expected to add 270 jobs at an average of $21 per hour to the

Bowling Green Assembly Plant’s workforce.

“GM has a long tradition of commitment to southcentral Kentucky and to producing, in Warren County,

the finest sports cars in America,” said Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin. “This benefits our entire state, both

as a source of pride and as a tremendous contributor to our economy.”

“For 35 years, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant has provided jobs to thousands of Kentuckians and to

hundreds of suppliers and vendors. We congratulate GM and offer our commitment to lending them

support for this project and any others they may undertake in the future,” continued Gov. Bevin.

General Motors plants to start making the technology upgrades and improvements in the

manufacturuing process this summer.

“We are making technology investments that will continue to improve our manufacturing processes and

ultimately the quality of our vehicles,” said North American Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones. “We

are putting Corvette customers first by building upon our world-class manufacturing process.”

General Motors announced last May that it will be investing $439 million to build a 870,000 sq foot

facility to house the new paint shop for the Corvette Assembly Plant. Construction of started last fall and

the final steel beam was put in place in April.

[SPIED] The Mid-Engine Corvette Zora Exists!!!

Finally, Chevrolet’s mid-engine Corvette prototype has

been spotted in broad daylight, captured by a spy

photographer stationed about a mile away with an extra

long camera lens.

The new spy photos of the heavily camoflaged Mid-Engine

Corvette just hit the internet a few minutes ago on several

websites including Autoblog. As these photos are bought

and paid for by these websites, go ahead and click this link

to view Autoblog’s full photo gallery.

The extra-grainy photos capture the appropriately nicknamed “Zora” Corvette prototype along with a

C7 Corvette on an unidentified General Motors test track, but most likely the Milford Proving Grounds.

According to rumors, the Mid-Engine Corvette was only being testing at night, so whoever let the new

Zora Corvette out to play during the day may have some ‘splaining to do.

So what do we see? Hard for any real details with the camo and grainy photos, but it does look like the

mid-engine prototype has a wider stance than the C7 Corvette that runs along side of it. Also, we can’t

help but to notice the flying buttresses that flow from the roof backwards. Kids let me tell you, nothing

says supercar like flying buttresses!

There is a covering

where the front

quarter grille usually

resides (do we even

need that on a mid-

engine car?) and the

rear brake duct

location also appears

to be covered. But the

doors are uncovered

and you can see a

definite style line

much like the C7 Corvette flowing from the front to rear where those rear ducts would be.

And while it may just be the camouflage that makes those brake lights look round, maybe Chevy

is looking to win some doubters back with the return of circular tail lights?

It’s amazing these shots come a day after GM announced a $290 million investment at the

Corvette assembly plant. According to the press release, the additional funds (on top of the $435

million paint shop construction) will be used to “upgrade and modify the plant’s vehicle assembly

operations with new technologies and processes.”

It would appear these new mid-engine photos back the rumors of a second line running at the

Bowling Green Assembly PLant. And it’s also obvious that this prototype is a long way from the

last spy photo which showed a heavily modified Holden Ute captured by a drone at Milford.

In a recent Car and Driver article, Technical Editor Don Sherman wrote that Chevrolet will be

moving exclusively to a mid-engine design which will debut at the 2018 North American

International Auto Show. If that timeline holds, this mid-engine car still has plenty of time for

development.

Happy Birthday Corvette! America’s Sports Car Turns 63

Happy Birthday, Corvette!!

Sixty-three years ago at a small factory in Flint,

Michigan on Van Slyke Road, the first 1953

Corvettes rolled off the assembly line and into

automotive history. On June 30th 1953, these

Chevrolet workers and executive gathered for a

group photo around the VIN 001 Corvette.

In the early 1950’s, Harley Earl, GM’s head of

styling, envisioned a low-cost American sports car that could compete with Europe’s Jaguar, MG’s and

Ferrari. Codenamed “Opel”, the very first prototype made its debut in January 1953 at the GM

Motorama show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The great reviews and pubic acclaim

for the little white roadster prompted GM to fast track the Corvette into production and the first retail

models were hand assembled in the back of the Chevrolet’s Customer Delivery Center in Flint, Michigan

just six months later.

Chevrolet built 300 Corvettes over the course of the 1953 model year. A uniform design allowed the

workers to concentrate on putting the bodies together without being distracted by trim and equipment

variations. Therefore, all 1953 Corvettes were Polo White with Sportsman Red interiors and equipped

with a canvas soft-top, 6.70 x 15 whitewall tires and a Delco signal-seeking radio. Also standard was a

5,000-rpm tachometer and a counter for total engine revolutions.

Although some sports car purists took exception to the Corvette’s only available transmission – the 2-

speed Powerglide automatic, the Corvette was still a decent sports car with well-tuned examples running

0-60 mph in 11 seconds and having a top speed near 105 mph.

The Corvette’s original base price was set at $3,498.00. However the general public was hard pressed to

get one as most of the production was doled out to project engineers, GM executives and other high

profile customers including Hollywood movie stars like John Wayne. In fact a dealer notice issued in July

’53 from the Central Office proclaimed: “No dealer is in a position to accept firm orders for delivery of a

Corvette in 1953.”

The 1953 Corvette still remains one of the most sought after Corvette models by collectors. The oldest

surviving example, VIN #003 was purchased by collector and Chevrolet dealer Dave Ressler for $1

million in 2006.

The Chevrolet Corvette has come a long way since that first 1953 rolled off the assembly line. While we

celebrate all Corvettes on this birthday, it all started 63 years ago:

General Motors sold 209,295 vehicles to retail customers in June which is an increase of 1 percent over

last year. Year to date, Chevrolet retail sales are up 3 percent and retail share has grown 0.5 percentage

points. Chevrolet remains the fastest-growing full-line brand in the industry. GM sold 190,613 retail

vehicles in May, down 13% from last May due to two fewer selling days as well as tight supplies of newly

launched cars and trucks. Customer demand has exceeded supply for new vehicles including the

Chevrolet Malibu and Cruze as well as the Cadillac XT5 and CT6. GM’s truck and crossover sales also

continued to show growth in the retail marketplace.

2017 Corvette Model Year Production Begins

Today officially marks the 64th year of the Corvette as the

2017 Corvette model year begins retail production today at

the Bowling Green Assembly Plant.

The plant has been building the 2017 model year Corvettes

for a few months now as those cars get driven and analyzed

by engineers as part of GM’s Captured Test Fleet. But for

customers waiting on the new 2017 Corvette Grand Sport, this is the day they’ve been waiting for.

The Bowling Green Assembly Plant ended 2016 Corvette production on June 27th and the plant had its first two-

week summer break since the start of C7 production. During the last two weeks while the production line was shut

down, the time was used to performance routine maintenance and some needed upgrades prior to the 2017

Corvette models starting.

I can tell already that production of the 2017 Corvettes will be anything but routine and here is why.

When production of the 2017 model year starts, only the ’17 MY Stingrays and Grand Sports will be on the

assembly line while production for the 2017 Z06 is expected to start up the week of September 5th. (September 5th

is officially Labor Day so most likely Z06 retail production will start on Tuesday, Sept. 6th)

We’re not sure why the 2017 Corvette Z06 will not start production with the other models as we’ve been unable to

confirm any major engineering changes or upgrades that would necessitate a delay. With the sales success that the

650-horsepower Z06 has enjoyed over its first two model years (2015, 2016), we think GM is using the staggered

production start as an opportunity to kick off the Widebody Grand Sport while allowing the market to absorb any

remaining 2016 Corvette Z06s that remain with dealers.

During the 2017 MY production schedule, we are anticipating the new $439 million paint shop to come on-line.

While that is expected to happen in mid-April 2017, we have heard that the plant will shutdown again sometime in

January/February 2017 to integrate the new paint shop with the existing assembly line. How long that will take is

anyone’s guess at this point but we heard that it will last longer than a couple of weeks.

We’ll be watching the blackout dates for Plant Tours as posted by the National Corvette Museum who is now

handling the public tours of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. You can see those blackout dates as well as

schedule your own tour at www.CorvetteMuseum.org.
