Anatomical Position – standing erect, facing forward, upper limbs at the sides, palms facing forward

Superior: Top. Or part that is above another part; closer to the head

Ex: The Kidneys are superior to the bladder

Inferior: Bottom. Or part that is below another part; toward the feet

Ex: The bladder is inferior to the kidneys

Anterior: Front

Ex: The liver is anterior to the stomach

Posterior: Back

Ex: The stomach is posterior to the liver

Medial: Imaginary midline (middle) dividing the body into equal right and left halves

Ex: The chest is medial to the arms

Lateral: Side. Toward the right or left side of the midline.

Ex: The arms are lateral to the chest

Ex: The appendix is ipsilateral to the gallbladder

Distal: Farther from the trunk of the body than another part.
