Tyler Shoemaker Encouraging the improvement of public health is stated in our bylaws as one of the primary objectives of the Spokane District Dental Society. Webster defines encouraging as: to support, to inspire, to persuade, to urge with courage, spirit, or hope. This definition is important. Improving the health of the public is not just done through a procedure or free service. It is also done through the words we speak, the programs we support, the committees we lead, and the legislation that we advocate. As we met with our representatives in Olympia January 25, this is what was happening. I want to thank leaders such as Dr. Jared Evans, Dr. Jonathan Judd and many others who represented Eastern Washington at Dental Ac- tion Day (DAD). I also want to acknowledge those who could not attend, but who shared their views and invited those attending to communicate them during their meetings. Wise legislators understand that you can find a survey or report to say whatever you want. What they really need is encouragement to make the right decision. And if they’re not getting it from one of us, they’re likely go- ing to get it from someone else who may not have the interest of the public health at heart. Thank you to all those who provided support and hope for those seeking help, by attending, or donating to, the SDDS Foundation’s 3 rd Annual Pop a Cork For A Cause which was held on Friday February 15 th . I encourage you to support the Society and the Society’s Foundation by becoming in- volved with the IDEA Clinic. I also encourage you to save-the-date for 2014 Dental Action Day, January 31.
