Expanded Form

Roano ran 1.68 miles. Wangari ran 1.50 miles. Who ran the longer distance?

One Way: Use a number line.

Numbers to the right are greater than numbers to the left. Since 1.68 is to the right of 1.50, 1.68 > 1.50.

Compare Decimals

Another Way: Use place value.

Line up the decimal points.

Compare the digits in the greatest place.

Continue comparing until the digits are different.

1.501.68 1.50

1.681.501.68

The ones digits are the same.

In the tenths place, 5 < 6. So, 1.50 < 1.68.

Compare Decimals

Replace with <, >, or = to make 0.8 0.87 a true sentence.

0.87 → 0.87

Annex a zero to the right of 0.8 so that it has the same number of decimal places as 0.87.

Answer: Since 0 < 7 in the hundredths place, 0.8 < 0.87.

0.8 → 0.80
