Director’s Message Continued

The Board of Commissioners desires to select a full-service firm or team who will be available to assist with a) all aspects of architectural and engineering concept design based on the District’s prior and recent feasibility, survey and public workshop research; b) business planning including cost estimating, financial implications of various program and facility elements, and anticipated recovery costs for each; c) construction management administration for building assessment; d) space planning; e) performance goals to achieve efficiency; and f) other similar deliverables that will be discussed prior to candidate selection. This project needs to be designed in a manner to permit construction in phases that align with program priorities and funding. A Long Range Planning Committee will be established to work with the selected Consultant.

After the project work is completed by the Consultant and our Core Design Team, the new conceptual design and supporting documentation will be brought to the public for additional comments, questions and support. We certainly appreciate all your and our community’s assistance with this master plan work and hope everyone will continue to be involved throughout the process.

Please continue to be involved in creating our master plan for the future. Your input is imperative!

Marilyn Stadler, Executive Director

We will have an excellent selection of plants, shrubs, seeds, and bulbs donated by patrons and local businesses, as well as other gardening related items. There will also be a chance to enter to win gardening related prizes! All money raised through this fundraiser goes directly back into FPFC to fund special projects.

Plant donations for the sale will be accepted at any time of the day from September 17th through September 23rd and are to be placed on the lawn on the east side of the building near the maintenance entrance.

Details about the sale can be found on the FPFC website under the Friends tab, contact Friends at [email protected], contact Marilyn Stadler at 360-293-0673, or e-mail [email protected] .

Friends always welcomes volunteers. If you are available to help, please contact us.

The Friends of Fidalgo hosted their annual Garage Sale on June 4. This year there was a consignment option which enabled patrons to sell larger items in return for the donation of a portion of the proceeds to Friends. Thank you to everyone who donated items or shopped at the annual Friends of Fidalgo

Together we raised $1780.50 for special projects at the pool!

The winner of the combo monthly pass for bringing in donated items for the sale was Susan Hill. Congratulations Susan!

Spotlight on Staff:

Kyle Ciminski

If you’ve been in the Fitness Center lately, you will have seen Kyle at work. Kyle originally hails from Oak Harbor where he swam for the Oak Harbor swim team and coached USA swimming. Over the years he has spent a lot of time at FPFC and he now makes it his home base for all of his fitness expertise.

Kyle majored in Business Marketing at Western, but through his coaching he developed his interest in the dry land side of physical training and he discovered his passion for working with people of all different age groups and abilities. He returned to school and received his Health and Fitness Technician (HFT) Certification through Skagit Valley College. In addition, Kyle has 9 certificates in TRX (Total Resistance Exercise) and he is currently one of only 12 master certified trainers in the world! He also holds certifications in everything from Olympic weight lifting, to foam rolling, kettle bells, physical therapy, sports medicine and more!

Kyle’s goal is to help bring you the knowledge and skills you need, at any age or fitness level, to help you reach your fitness goals. Whether better balance, improved strength and posture, core and lower back strengthening, exercise correction, or weight loss are your target, Kyle can help you find the tools to help you get there. You can read about further tips and suggestions from Kyle in the fitness section of the 3rd Act, a magazine for active seniors that Kyle writes for (copies are available at the pool).

One of Kyle specialties is TRX. TRX is a form of resistance exercise developed by a former Navy Seal, but don’t let that intimidate you! …Cont’d on p. 6

It was hard work, but fun and worth it!

Spotlight on Staff Cont’d:

Kyle explains that TRX has found a softer side and is used in physical therapy in VA hospitals. It is something that anyone at any ability level can do. Kyle has clients from ages 15 to 79. TRX uses a pair of Kevlar reinforced nylon straps and your own body weight. Exercises are developed based on your personal needs and abilities and are modified and adjusted based on the angle you choose when exercising. Kyle specializes in developing programs and providing variations that meet your needs. He strives to be encouraging and challenging, helping you push for your personal best in a way that suits you best.

Kyle loves the inviting, relaxed, comfortable and energized atmosphere at FPFC where everyone is like family. Try one of the TRX classes that are included in your membership on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30, sign up for a private or group training session, or just find out how to use the fitness center equipment. Take advantage of the expertise at your doorstep!

Kirsten Fors

Kirsten is a native of Anacortes and has been at FPFC since November of 2015. She teaches classes both on land (Bootcamp) and in the water (water aerobics).

Kirsten studied Kinesiology at Western Washington University and has a Personal Training Certificate from the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). She has always been interested in personal fitness and group classes. Being active and healthy is a part of her everyday life.

Between graduation and certification Kirsten decided to test herself and trained for and competed in a full marathon, which she finished September 13, 2015.

Kirsten believes this personal drive influences her classes. She likes to push herself hard, and with that, she likes to push her class hard too. Everyone is always looking for more and she tries to give that to her class. She wants people to come to her classes excited to be there. But mostly, she wants people to leave feeling like they got the work out they were looking for - a work out where they really did give it all they have. It's also important that people learn. Kirsten incorporates the "why" and “how” of what they do in class in her teaching. She believes connecting the action to everyday tasks helps give people a better understanding of their own bodies.

In her classes, Kirsten likes to create an atmosphere that is happy, fun, positive, and encouraging - always with a smile. She describes herself as a pusher, in the best way possible. She expects a lot out of her class but she is very open to feedback and constructive criticism. She may be the instructor, but she feels the class belongs to the participants. Everything done in class has various levels. “I'm constantly reminding everyone that every day is different and with that sometimes different levels of work happen. There isn't a move that can't be modified to fit any and all types of fitness levels.”

Outside of FPFC, Kirsten likes to play outside, garden, bike, hike, run, boat, and the list goes on. She believes it is important to keep interests and hobbies as part of the pursuit to stay young and healthy. Work hard, play harder.

Kirsten finds everyone at FPFC to be friendly and encouraging. Her favorite part is coming in every morning and seeing her people. They are excited to be at the pool and are always ready to give their all and show what they have. It makes her job as instructor very rewarding to know that patrons look forward to seeing her and coming to her class. You can't ask for anything better.

Stay Sun Safe!

Did you know… Summer is here! The sun can be harmful and you need to protect yourself. We can’t say it enough…

Apply sunscreen liberally and evenly to all exposed skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher whenever you spend time outdoors. Be sure to cover often-missed spots: the lips, ears, around the eyes, on the neck, the underside of chin, and hands. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after heavy sweating. Always wear a lip balm with an SPF 15 or higher – lips are very sensitive.

For every inch of brim you reduce your lifetime risk of skin cancer by 10%!
