What is Spirometry?

Sustained maximal inspiration devices Use of a breathing device to help promote

lung expansion after prolonged bed rest or surgery

Contains a # of movable balls that are pushed up by the force of the breaths & held suspended in the air while the patient inhales

Purposes Increase lung volume Boost alveolar inflation Promotes venous return

Indications 1. For clients with thick tenacious

secretions 2. After abdominal/thoracic

surgery 3. With lung diseases like COPD

and asthma

TWO TYPES

Flow oriented SMI - consists of 1 or more plastic chambers containing freely movable colored balls or discs- the balls or discs are elevated as the client inhales- the client is asked to keep them elevated as long as possible with a maximal sustained inhalation- low cost devices, disposable, used independently by client

Volume-oriented SMI- measure the inhalation volume maintained by the client

preparations

Procedure

1. Assess patient’s condition2. Explain the procedure to the patient3. Wash hands4. Help the patient into a comfortable sitting position5. Auscultate the patient’s lungs6. Hold or place the spirometer in an upright position7. Exhale normally8. Seal the lips tightly around the mouthpiece9. Take in a slow, deep breath & hold the breath for 2

seconds initially, increasing to 6 seconds
