He gave the Officer the phone number to the lady that sold him the car. He called to verify the man’s story, and the woman said she hadn’t included any tag in the sale. When I was a kid, Cronkite was a fixture in my house every evening just after supper- at least for the first thirteen years of my life. When he retired, my Mom and Dad continued to watch the CBS evening news, but Dan Rather just didn’t work for me (he was far too dramatic for my tastes). I ended up not really pay- ing much attention to the news until I worked for WTOC (and ended up still thinking Rather was a drama queen on camera). There’s something to be said for the cable/internet news revo- lution, with it’s near instanta- neous reporting of every break- ing story. We’re inundated with info from nearly every source. The problem is, though, that rarely are any of those reports unbiased (yes, including my “reporting”- but this is actually an editorial column with some “news” mixed in). Everyone seemed to have an agenda. Cronkite, on the other hand, seemed to have just one agenda: to report the facts and let us, the viewers, decide what to think about it. I miss that. In fact, I missed it as soon as Cronkite signed off for the last time- and I especially miss it now, when every anchor seems to be some Nancy Grace- like shrew that’s haranguing, whining and shrieking through their faux reports, harping on one thing over and over. And over. Cronkite projected himself as warm and knowledgeable- but never patronizing. His interviews of the occasional guest were in- tensely probing- but never ha- rassing. He presented us with the facts and rarely told us what to think of them. When he did, though- we believed him, and he changed the country. If you don’t believe it, Lyndon Johnson’s not running for a second term pretty much proves my point. Like I said, I missed Cronkite as soon as he left. I looked for- ward to his “Universe” specials on CBS, but they ended far too soon. When he showed up on CNN or other outlets, covering shuttle launches, I would watch because no matter how inane the other anchors were, Cronkite was as professional as he’d ever been. When Cronkite told us some- thing, it truly was the way it was. Rest in peace, sir… I know it’ll be coming to an end soon, but- since Saturday- the Atlanta area has been expe- riencing high temperatures in the mid-to-low 80s. Considering it’s late July, and this is Georgia, that’s a cold spell. And I’m lov- ing it. I worked in the yard for about four hours Saturday and didn’t feel like I was going to col- lapse when I was done. In fact, I only ended up stopping because the Braves game was on. And I ran out of space in the trash can. I have two cans- one, provided by the city of Norcross, is strictly for garbage (they give us a little recycling bin, too) and the other- that I bought myself- is for yard waste. The yard, though, is about three or four years behind on service. Not to say that it was dirty when we moved in, it’s just that Tim (our friend who also happens to be our landlord) had been paying a lawn care com- pany to keep things cut, etc. and they just cut the grass and used a weed eater where absolutely nec- essary. No cutting back branches, no trimming bushes. As a result, I’m dealing with that two or three years’ worth of pine straw and other yard waste under said bushes. And that means I run out of can space pretty quick. Of course, it also keeps me from having too much stuff at the curb on trash pick up day. (They evidently have some kind of lim- it on how much they’ll pick up. Seriously. I can’t figure it, but I live close enough to work to take stuff there and get rid of it if ab- solutely necessary.) The other thing I’m digging about the cooler weather is hav- ing the doors and windows open. Living in high rises for the past five years, I didn’t have windows that opened (they didn’t want people jumping/falling out. Of course, with the vagrants stink- ing up the park across the street- I don’t know that I’d have wanted to.) Cat is digging it, too- because she can sit and watch the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Fortu- nately, she’s yet to attempt claw- ing her way through the screens. I actually like the fact that the city of Savannah gives you the great, big can for recycling- though I think it’s funny that you dump all your recyclables into one container. Couldn’t they just pay someone to sort the gar- bage? That’s how it is here, too, though. At least at the condo, there were separate containers for glass, plastic and paper. Then again, they were in the basement, and you had to ride the elevator down to dispose of your stuff- something most people (me in- cluded) were too lazy to do when ____________________________________ Continued on page B3 WWW .K IA C OUNTRYOF S AVANNAH . It seems, years ago, I simply re-acted when hunting season came. The preparation phase lasted only about a month. The reason was be-cause I hunted area farms. Unlike many hardwoods areas, farm land hunting is fairly predict-able. The deer are basically going to be there from year to year. I know this cuts out the need for a lot of scouting articles, but the truth is the truth. For instance, I have heard all of my life that oak trees only produce acorns every three years or so. Now, I’ve not studied this, so don’t send me mean emails. What I HAVE discovered is this… if there is an oak tree on the side of a field, and that field is fertilized by the farmer every year, that tree will have acorns every year. I have also noticed this… if said farmer has several cows and those cows fertilize around that oak tree every year (if you know what I mean), that tree will have acorns every year as well. Things just are a little different on the farm. And what about that wonder-ful spring gobbler. I’ve hunted them in the deep woods and on the

farm and I can tell you that, once again, if that farmer has cows and he feeds those cows a little sweet feed; he is creating one of the best management areas for turkeys. What each hunter needs to realize is that each cow pie is actually a natural bait pile that a turkey will eventually find. Somehow I just can’t see this technique being given print space in Field and Stream; but again, that’s life on the farm; a little different and, in my opinion, a lot better. The farmer has learned that nothing is wasted – even waste. He has learned that what the rest of the world sees as worthless and even unmentionable , is the cata-lyst for growth and the medium for consistency. He has learned that waste is not waste, it is “fertilizer!” What all of us need to remem-ber is there is nothing that happens in our life that is useless or worth-less. God never looks at something that we have done and says, “I can’t use that.” He uses EVERYTHING and has promised that even the things that we consider of no use, He will use to grow our life into

one that is consistent in bearing spiritual fruit year after year. What looks like cow pies to you, is fertil-izer to God.

state baseball title This coming Saturday will be one of the biggest days in the lives

of some local recreational baseball players when Bryan County travels to Toccoa to try its best to win a state title. Bryan County knocked off Bulloch County in a two-game sweep in its best of three show-down on July 10. The 12 and under team oper-ated under the radar for most of the season, but has drawn atten-tion to itself with two wins over it bordering neighbors. In the first game, Bryan Coun-ty won 3-2, but poured it on even more in the second game to walk away with a resounding 9-2 vic-tory. University of Georgia recruiters banned from high school campusSports Commentary: Reneging on a promise is one of the worst things you can do to anyone whose mind is set on do-ing something that had been a life-time dream. That scenario played itself out this past weekend when rising se-nior quarterback Devin Burns of Columbus went with his family on an official campus visit to Athens. While on the recruiting trip, Burns and his family were in-formed by one of the University of Georgia coaches that his scholar-ship offer had been taken back af-ter the Bulldogs signed two other quarterbacks earlier in the signing period. Columbus Carver head football coach Dell McGee, a former NFL and University of Auburn athlete was upset by the way his player was handled and indicated he in-formed his administrative staff and his athletic director of his wishes of not letting the Bulldogs recruit his players for an indefinite period of time. One other player Corey Craw-ford was on the verge of commit-ting to Georgia, but changed his mind after finding out what had happened to his teammate. Georgia head coach Mark Richt agreed that the situation could have been handled better, but didn’t want to comment on the situation due to NCAA guidelines. The Division 1-A schools are al-

there was a trash chute at the end of the hallway on each floor. Yes. I am that lazy, thank you very much…

So, if the Braves had played this way from the beginning of the season, they’d be looking at a nice lead in the East, instead of staring at the Phillies’ rear ends. Of course, who knew Kelly John-son wasn’t going to hit, or that Jordan Shafer would be a bust, or Kenshin Kawakami would only pitch well when he was matched up against a marquee name (or had three weeks’ or so rest be-tween starts)? I keep hearing people specu-lating on what the team will do “when Tim Hudson comes off the DL,” and “who gets sent to the pen” and that sort of thing. I’m wondering, myself, if maybe the Braves shouldn’t try a six man rotation, a la the Japanese team that KK came from? I mean, the team certainly didn’t bestow that retardedly big contract on the guy to pitch him out of the bullpen- not with an 89 MPH fastball. I’d almost say the same thing for Derek Lowe (who was supposed to be the ace of the staff)- and I seriously doubt that’s where Hudson head-ed. And Javier Vazquez? Are you kidding me? With some run sup-port, he’s a Cy Young contender. Ditto Jair Jurjens. And then there’s Tommy Han-sen. I’m not ready to anoint him

the second coming of Denton True (like a lot of fans and even some broadcasters seem to want to do), but you can’t really ar-gue with a 5-0 record and a 3.00 ERA- especially when that sup-posed ace is 8-7 with a 4.40. So why not a six man rotation? An extra day of rest means all of your pitchers could go deeper into games, and lessen the wear on the bullpen (seriously, Mike Gonzalez is having tendonitis is-sues and he goes out there two days in a row?). Next year, send Lowe to the pen to close out games. He was successful as a closer in the past, and I’m seriously doubting Lib-erty Media is going to come off the cash to re-sign Rafael Soriano or Gonzalez- and they can try “grooming” Manny Acosta for the closer’s role all they want, he’s way too inconsistent to be in that spot…

My sister and I would always get a laugh out of Mom saying she seen something “on the His-tory Channel” (no matter what we were talking about), but I find myself watching the History Channel all the time, too. Yep, I’m getting old…

History has actually been run-ning a lot of promos for the new season of their “Monster Quest” show. Ever watch this thing? It’s like hour-long segments of George Noory’s show brought to TV. And the “evidence” these supposed “experts” come up with is hilarious. I mean, I’m not saying there aren’t plenty of

weird critters left for us to find- all over the world- but I’m pretty sure there’s no chupacabra, Big-foot or Jersey Devil…

Shelby was telling me she saw some show on Animal Planet that featured camcorder footage of an octopus attacking some swimmers. Unusual, but not completely unprecedented- ex-cept that it supposedly happened in Okla-freaking-homa. The clip I watched on AnimalPlanet.com reminded me of the “Alien Au-topsy” footage, quality-wise. Why is it that all these “cap-tured on home video” things are such poor quality? Can’t these people hold still? And the video camera Shelby found in her clos-et when she moved from Savan-nah (she didn’t know she actually owned a video camera) is digital- and it’s about five years old. Do things like this only happen to people who suffer from tremors and still use VHS cameras?

Has anyone tried that “Ro-setta Stone” language program? I was trying to talk to my next door neighbor yesterday, and my Spanish is only slightly worse than his English (fortunately, his son was there- and fluent in both). I’m seriously considering get-ting that software, and I’d like to hear from someone who’s tried it- you know, does it really work, mainly. I mean, I’m pretty old to try a new language (and I did not do well in Spanish 102 at Arm-strong, even though Bill was a great guy and a great teacher)

so I’d like to be reasonably sure it’s going to work before I think more seriously about buying it. After I’ve got Spanish down, maybe I’ll work on Chinese. Then- maybe- I’ll be able to un-derstand what Tim is talking about a little easier…

That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from the sports world. As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322.

lotted more than 60 scholarships per year and the Bulldogs have recruited heavily on the defensive

side of the line, but still had a lot of offensive scholarships remaining. Offensive coordinator had Burns rated very high this past spring, but with the departure of Matthew Stafford it left an imme-diate need for a seasoned quarter-

back for the upcoming season. The entire scenario put a bitter taste in the mouth of the Carver coaching staff and they decided to take action to make sure some-thing of that nature will never hap-pen in the future.

BY AL CARRELL AND KELLY CARRELL

Large dogs can benefit from having raised food and water dish-es. You can provide this by pur-chasing a setup at your pet store, or you could make one yourself and customize it for your best friend. Just choose a wooden stool that is tall enough for your dog. The bowls you use need to have a lip on them that is the widest part of the bowl itself. You can set the bowls down on the stool and trace around them. You want to cut the hole a little smaller so that when you drop the dish into it, the lip will hold it in place so it won’t fall all the way through. This way, the bowls can be removed for easy fill-

ing and cleaning. Paint it to suit your best friend’s personality, and you will be appreciated for years to come.

* * * Dear Carrells: I am semi-retired as of this year, and have created a really great home office. This way, I can still take care of business but be at home with my family. When it came to purchasing my office fur-niture, I had to do it on the cheap. I found a local store that sells used office furniture at a huge discount. The money even goes to charity, so it may be tax-deductible. Since there have been so many busi-nesses closing down, I found some almost-new furniture that is beau-tiful and that fits into our exist-ing decor. What a find! My office

is very comfortable, and looks great. My wife uses it, too, now. -- G.F.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- Those really absorbent dispos-able diapers are perfect for sopping up a big liq-uid mess in your shop or garage, or even in your house. Buy a small pack-age and keep them on hand for emergency pick-ups like this.

* * * Dear Al: We have a lot of humidity in our gazebo, probably due to the local weather and from our hot tub, located inside the room. The light fixture and fan are sup-posed to be for outdoor

use, but the light bulbs are really hard to change out. They get stuck and even rusted sometimes. What I have been doing is rubbing the threads of the bulb base with petro-leum jelly before turning it into the socket. It seems to cut way down on the rust problem, and makes changing them so much easier. -- L.N.

* * * Q: Our front door is stained. It had a clear, shiny coating on it over the stain. I know this because it’s still shiny inside the house. But the outside is dull now. What can we put on it to shine it back up? -- M.B. A: Use a polyurethane finish over the stain. Choose one that is UV-resistant and made for exterior use. Clean the surface really well and give it a light sanding if any gloss is left from the original fin-ish. You probably can get by with one coat. Be careful not to apply it too thickly, to prevent drips, or else take it down and apply your finish while it is laying flat.

* * * Dear Kelly: I recycle whenever I can. I found a great way to reuse a lot of the plastic grocery sacks I get at the market. I stuff them into an old tissue dispenser box. They fit right into the hole in the top of the box, and when I need a bag, I just pull one out. They are great for lining trash cans and storing items around the house, and what I don’t keep, I just return to the market when I shop. -- S.A.

* * *SHOPTALK -- Panasonic has two new Whispervalue models in its family of ventilation fans. These have superior air flow and ex-tremely low noise levels, and are built to be energy-efficient. The depth of each is only 3 3/4 inches, making them very easy to fit into most ceiling spaces. Check them out online at www.Panasonic.com and find a dealer in your area.

* * * Dear Carrells: We have a metal

shelf in our breakfast room that my wife uses for extra storage. It’s more decorative than function-al, and feels a little flimsy to me. She said she couldn’t part with it, so I beefed it up. I added wooden shelves over the metal grates and attached them to the frame with bolts. She painted the shelves to match. Now it’s extremely sturdy and holds a lot more stuff. I’m sure we could have spent a lot more money replacing it than we spent on the plywood and paint. -- C.R.

* * *A Tip From the Super Handy-Mom -- If you want to paint but have a small budget, check out the “oops!” paint at your paint store. This is paint that was mixed and returned, just mixed incorrectly or for some other reason is unwanted. You can pick up a can of paint for about half the price it normally is.

Just find something that is the right color and finish for your needs, and get the job done. This makes painting even more cost-effective!

* * *SHOPTALK -- The H2Orb is a really innovative device that detects leak-ing water at your toilet and alerts you of the problem with an audible alarm. It works on both small and large leaks, and even can shut the water off in case of an overflow situation. It’s easy to install in only a few minutes, with minimal tools, and can save you money on water loss as well as property damage. To learn more, visit www.theh2orb.com or contact AquaOne Technol-ogies, LLC, at 866-598-3474.

When I was 19 and a student living at home, I found a ‘28 Chrys-ler 62 touring car for sale for only

$35. I made a deposit of $10, and drove the car to a service station for a lube and oil change. But Mom

nixed the deal. “We have enough old cars around here already” was her verdict. I had to return the touring car, and the owner wouldn’t refund my deposit on that olive-drab, ex-Army staff car. The advertised 62 touring color was attractive in two-tone Duco: London Smoke over French gray, light, with Partridge Cream strip-ing. 1928 was a banner year for Chrysler, which in just four years had risen to third place in nation-wide sales, second only to Ford and Chevrolet. And during 1928, Chrysler Corp. bought Dodge, and in mid-year introduced the new Chrysler-Plymouth 4 and De Soto 6 for the 1929 model year! So Chrysler had suddenly split into four separate brands, emulating GM’s multibrand formula. As for the early 1928 season, Chrysler was offering the four-cylinder Chrysler 52, and a three six-cylinder series: the 62, 72 and Imperial 80. Model numbers signi-fied the cars’ guaranteed top speed. Notice the weird little bulldog cafe. From the 1920s to the 1950s, thousands of odd-shaped stores, gas stations and cafes were built around the U.S., some shaped like hats, tamales, shoes, hot dogs, tee-pees, birds, planes, barrels, pyra-mids, pigs and all sorts of crea-tures and objects. These truly were roadside attractions for the curious tourist, and a few such structures remain today, here and there. Seen any lately?

1928 CHRYSLER 62 TOURING CARIN SPITE OF THIS BACKGROUND, CHRYSLER’S 62 WAS NO DOG

BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: It might have been the Red Sox sticker on my car, but I found myself in a no-win situation in New York City a few weeks ago. I had traveled to New York for the weekend, and I was able to secure a perfect parking spot on the street. When I arrived back at my car on Sunday, I came across a gruesome sight. The cars in front of and behind me were parked so close to my bumpers that there wasn’t enough lube, crowbars or 1,000-point turns to get me out of my spot. The cars on either side of me literally were touching my bumpers. So my question is, What to do? Should I “gently” move them (use my car to push the other cars far enough so I can get out)? Or should I just walk to the nearest bar for cocktails to wait them out? -- David TOM: Well, I think you may have little choice, David. You may have to use what some New Yorkers call “persuasion.” RAY: I certainly would give the other drivers a reasonable grace period. Wait around for 15 minutes or half an hour if you can -- just in case they stopped to run into a store or pay a quick visit to a friend. But in some parts of New York City, people can park a car and not use it again for a month! TOM: But even if you’re in an area where people have to move their parked cars every day, having to stand around un-til the next morning is not fair to you. And clearly, those cars weren’t there when you parked the car (or you never would have gotten into the space). So both of them knew they were blocking you in. In which case, you are justified in forcing your way out. RAY: We don’t know if a police tow truck or the city help line (dial 311) would be of any assistance. We tried call-

ing the NYPD to ask, but they suggested we e-mail them Form 4063b and wait un-til the Martians land for a response (to be fair, we prefer to think they’re out prevent-ing crime rather than responding to ques-tions from a couple of jamokes like us). TOM: But unless the police or park-ing department will help you, you may have no choice but to force your way out. I saw a guy in Boston with a Lincoln Town Car, and he was in the same situation -- he had been parked in. So he was turning the wheel back and forth, back and forth, try-ing to get out, all to no avail. Finally, he lost his patience. RAY: So he puts the thing in drive and floors it, smashing into the car in front of him, and pushing that car into the car in front of it. TOM: Then he realizes he’s not sure which guy was more responsible. So he puts it in reverse and floors it again, and does the same thing to the guy behind him. RAY: Then he puts on his turn signal, which is now dangling from the back of his car, pulls out and goes on his merry way. TOM: By the way, that’s how my brother usually gets INTO a parking space. RAY: Here’s a better way to do it, David: Put the car in drive; make sure you’re bumper to bumper, so you do as little damage as possible; and then slowly squeeze the gas pedal (you ultimately may have to push it pretty hard) until the car in front of you moves a couple of feet. Then go backward slowly, until you’re bumper to bumper with the car behind you, and do the same thing. TOM: Once you have room to get out, feel free to leave a sternly worded note on the offending windshields, and go on your merry way. And next time, take the train to New York. It’s a wonderful experience.
