SPIE Student Chapter Report JANUARY-DECEMBER, 2014 SPIE STUDENT CHAPTER, UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED OPTICS AND PHOTONICS JD-2, SECTOR-III, SALT LAKE KOLKATA-700098 WEST BENGAL, INDIA
In the International Year of Light, the SPIE Student Chapter of University of Calcutta successfully
completes its 8th year, sailing over all the shortcomings and loopholes that it encountered last
year. Contemplating over the adverse situations of campus shift to a new location to the
hindrance of unavailability of credit card to make payments for renewal/new memberships, the
existing members and office bearers along with the untiring encouragement of our faculty advisor
has made it possible to continue our pursuits in promoting Optics outside regular classroom
curricula to different stratum of students belonging to school, colleges and universities in urban as
well as the rural areas of our state.
However, as promised, we surely did overcome our payment issues and presently the chapter
proudly announces its fresh start with quite a number of new members joining in along with the
existing ones teamed together at our new campus location. Here we make a request to kindly
update your data with our new campus address as mentioned above.

Chapter Activities:
1. Seminar on “Silicon Photonics and Optical Interconnects”, at
Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of
Calcutta, 28th March, 2014.
It is our pleasure to report that we had successfully organised a seminar on “Silicon Photonics
and Optical Interconnects” by Prof. Dr. Bijoy Krishna Das, IIT Madras.
2. Seminar on “ Wavefront aberrations, Adaptive Optics and
Applications in Vision Science”, at Department of Applied Optics and
Photonics, University of Calcutta, 17th July, 2014
The SPIE Student Chapter cordially invited Professor Dr. Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan,
presently a visiting professor of vision science, physics and computer engineering at the
University of Michigan to deliver a seminar on adaptive optics.
In the seminar, Prof. Vengu introduced the basic principles of adaptive optics and wavefront
aberrations and then talked about their applications in vision science. Also he discussed about
how adaptive optics has presently revolutionized astronomy, which was particularly beneficial for
our Astrophysics students. The seminar was of a different flavour and was thoroughly enjoyed by
the audience majority of which were the post graduates students and research scholar of our
university.

3. Participation in SPIE Annual meeting-2014 Our SPIE student chapter President Mr. Suvanwit Roy was participated in the SPIE annual meeting held at San Diego, USA on 16th August 2014. He also participated in the Optics and Photonics 2014 conference held at San Diego during 17th to 21st of August 2014. He had the opportunity to interact in events organized by the SPIE with the presence of more than 210 students around the world.

4. Outreach at South City International School, Kolkata, 15th
November, 2014.
A team of 14 SPIE Student Chapter members along with our faculty advisor Dr. Kallol
Bhattacharya, visited the South City International School on a special invite, where the school
was celebrating World‟s Photonics Day as a part of their Children‟s Day Program. Our faculty
advisor Dr. Bhattacharya at the beginning of the program delivered a speech about World‟s
Photonics Day and enlightened the school children about IYL 2015. Later he delivered an
interactive lecture on the different optical phenomenon and current trends in optics to the
students of class VI-VIII.
On the other hand, the students of class IX and X were divided into small groups and were shown
the different optical models demonstrating the fundamental optical laws which they were taught
theoretically in their classrooms. Apart from those, a brief idea about lasers, optical fibres were
also given. It was rewarding to find the students showing keen interest in the subject and the
members faced a lot of tricky and substantial questions from their end. Even the teachers were
very inquisitive and praised the effort that we put into developing the hands on models. The
students showed particular eagerness in watching the “Sun Spot” experiment and the
presentation of the Optical Illusions. It is worth a mention here that the Principal and the Teachers
of SCIS found our visit extremely encouraging for their students and they have requested our
faculty advisor to make this demonstration an annual event in their school henceforth, if possible.

5. Dr. Maurad Zghal and Prof. Kehar Singh visit
We are extremely privileged to report that Dr. Mourad Zghal, Professor at the University of
Carthage, Tunisia and Professor Kehar Singh, a member of the faculty at IIT Delhi, India
visited our department in December to encourage our SPIE student chapter. Dr Mourad Zghal
was introduced by Dr. K. Bhattacharya, Head of the Department Applied Optics and
Photonics, University of Calcutta, Faculty Advisor, SPIE Student Chapter, University of
Calcutta. Dr Mourad Zghal shared his activity in promoting optics and photonics in practical
uses in Tunisia and Africa.

Future Goals:
A complete picture of our activity in the upcoming year has been planned to celebrate the
International Year of Light 2015.
1. IYL Photo Contest
A photo contest on the focal theme „Light‟ will be organized. Announcement for this event will be
circulated among all photographic clubs and Academic Institutes and will be advertised in the
networking sites like „Facebook‟. Prize money as well as Certificates of Merit will be awarded to
the best photographs which will be judged by a panel of experts. The award ceremony will be
held on Feb.21, coinciding with the second day of the Optical Society of India’s Golden Jubilee
Conference, International Conference on Optics and Photonics (ICOP). To impart an
international flavour to the conference, all participants will be eligible to enter the Competition.

2. Seminar on light-based technologies
At the mid 2015, an in-house seminar on light-based technologies will be held in the Department.
This will involve our faculty members, alumni and students of the Department of Applied Optics
and Photonics where the CU Student Chapter is housed. An hour‟s slot will be kept aside to
showcase and review the Chapter activities carried out during the last three months. We are also
on the lookout for an international speaker for the purpose whose expenses may be covered by
the SPIE travelling lecturer grant.
3. Outreach programs
During 2015 at least 4 outreach programs have been finalized. Each of these programs will start
with an attractive presentation on the historical significance of IYL and the importance of light
based technologies in the modern times. As with all our outreach activities, models developed by
our Chapter as well as those available in the outreach kits supplied by SPIE and OSA will be
displayed and explained. During this period, we have also received proposals for outreach activity
to an undergraduate college. Talks are on regarding our visit to an orphanage where children are
being sent to local government schools and also a school for the special children. We hope to
impart “Light” into their underprivileged lives, thus bringing out the true spirit of IYL 2015.
4. SPIE Newsletter
Keeping IYL 2015 in our minds as well as the completion of 8 successful years of our chapter we
have decided to bring out an annual newsletter wherein we will bring out in print all our chapter
activities over time. It would help us to make our activities more verbal in front of people who are
interested to know about our chapter activities and what the chapter is all about. Though the
ideas are still at a very nascent stage we look forward to achieve this goal as well, successfully.
