Executive Summary

Spices has probably been the oldest item that has been traded globally and has its origins from China and India. This document aims to show you the global demand of spices and UAE’s role in distributing this product internationally. HS 0906 Cinnamon and cinnamon-tree flowers As per 2015 ITC data, more than USD 442 Million worth of these products were imported globally. Largest importers of this product in 2015 were USA (18%); Mexico (14%), India (10%), Netherlands (3%), followed by UAE, Peru, Bangladesh and Germany (2.5%). UAE’s exports (in 2015) totaled nearly USD 832,000, with Oman being UAE’s main partner for this product with >68% of UAE’s exports going here. Other importers apart from GCC include Maldives, Spain, and Canada (2.2%), however, all in very low quantities. Potential exists both in terms of market diversification (e.g. US, Mexico) as also increased export potential to the surrounding ME Region. HS 0907 Cloves In 2015, ITC Data indicated an import value of @ USD 368 Million. Top importers as a percentage of global imports include India (41%); Singapore (12%); Vietnam (6.2%); USA (Nearly 5%); Germany & Netherlands (together at 4.5%), apart from Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Peru and Malaysia (1.3%). Apart from exports to the GCC (@ 58%), the only significant importer from UAE is Dominican Rep 1.5%) and India (though UAE is a net importer for this product from India). USA and the EU remain a high potential importer which we need to pursue actively, apart from increasing exports to regional importers. HS 0908 Nutmeg, mace and cardamom Out of a global import value of nearly USD 669 Billion in 2015, main imports were from KSA (@19%); UAE (15%); India (10.5%, though a net exporter); Vietnam (5.5%); USA (5%), apart from EU (@15%). UAE’s exports of this product was concentrated to the GCC (@ 83%), apart from small quantities to Maldives, Malaysia, Ethiopia & Pakistan. Clearly potential exists for new or increased exports to USA and EU countries. HS 0909 Seeds - Anise, badian, fennel, coriander, cumin, etc. As per 2015 ITC data, more than USD 699 Million worth of these products were imported globally with EU (@20%); USA (10.5%); India (7.2%); Vietnam (6.5%); Malaysia (@6%) and the rest among many other countries. UAE’s exports however was only approx. USD 3 Million, once again with majority of its exports to the GCC (@65%), apart from scattered exports to Maldives, Sri Lanka, South America, Indonesia, Malaysia and USA. The current diverse markets of UAE for this product indicate the potential to new countries in these regions, especially the EU and Africa. 0910 Ginger, saffron, turmeric, thyme, bay leaves & curry This category of spices is the most imported of all the above with a global import value of nearly USD 2.5 Billion. As in the case with other spices, EU (@28%) and USA are the main importers (10.6%), closely followed by KSA & UAE (10.5%), and followed by nearly all other countries, mainly Japan, Pakistan & Canada. UAE’s exports (>35 countries) of USD 16 Million in 2015 was mainly to other GCC countries (72%), North America (16%) as also to the EU. Due to the demand of this item, obviously potential exists to improve its exports or diversify markets (mainly to EU). The next few pages aims at giving statistical information on the global imports and UAE exports of these 5 products and we hope it will be useful to DE Members.
