Many of our readers travel to places like Moab to find fantastic outdoor opportunities such as mountain biking, off-road trails, whitewater

rafting, etc. Here’s another extreme adventure you can add to your “to do” list and it’s in Las Vegas, Nevada!

Sunbuggy Fun Rentals – By far the most popular Adventure in the Las Vegas area is the Mini Baja Chase. This is the one as seen on TV featured by several different networks as it is a unique driving experience unlike anything else in the world. Run at the Vegas Dunes, this allows for traversing all the different terrain of this expansive area at a mind-blowing pace! This 30-minute heart pounding chase was billed as “Sin City’s Best Near Death Experience!” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Dr. Frank Styles of the hit TV show “The Doc Star,” known for his wild adventures, says that he “had an out of body experience” flying down one of the steeper descents. Vegas Dunes is 15,000 awesome acres of varied desert terrain right on the edge of Las Vegas (only 15 minutes from the strip) consisting of dunes, gravel, hard pack, hills, valleys, washed out creek beds, and trails running every direction. This area is very technical and challenging with lots of tight and twisty trails. On occasion, the same area is used by off-road racing organizations such as SNORE, SCORE, MRAN, and Best in the Desert. The Mini-Baja is fast-paced and not tailored for the weak at heart.

During your adventure, you will travel over very aggressive and challenging terrain. This is not a roller coaster ride - if you aim at the big rocks you will probably hit them. You are required to wear a full face helmet and a four-point harness at all times on the course. Typically one- and two-seat buggies are best suited for the Mini-Baja, however, larger buggies are available for families. While the custom buggies are expert at taming this type of terrain, you need not be. They are as easy to drive as an automatic car with only gas, brake, and steering. This is not a slow-paced sightseeing tour. Your job will be to chase one of the expert Dunies and the only thing that will slow him down is if he’s waiting for you to catch up. While they make these buggies tough enough for you to really put them to it, it’s your tour… you can go as fast as you feel comfortable. See pages 38-39 for more information.

GMC Sierra Denali 2500HD and 3500HD – the first offerings of the exclusive Denali line on a heavy-duty GMC pickup – lead a new Sierra heavy-duty truck lineup for 2011. The comprehensively rede-

signed roster of 2011 Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks includes a new, more powerful 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel that delivers 397 horsepower (296 kW) at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb.-ft. of torque (1,037 Nm) at 1,600 rpm.

“The new Sierra Denali HD is the latest expression of GMC’s Denali philosophy of blending capability with premium features and styling,” said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC product marketing direc-tor. “It is a premium tool that offers many comfort and infotainment features, along with a maximum towing capacity of 21,700 pounds with the more powerful Duramax diesel.”

The new Denali HDs are crew cabs available only in the 2500 series (3/4-ton), 2WD and 4WD configurations, as well as the 3500 Series (1-ton) 2WD and 4WD in both single-rear-wheel and dually versions. The 3500 series is also available in standard (6-foot 6-inches) and dually long box (8-foot) versions. A Vortec 6.0L gas V-8/six-speed automatic powertrain is standard and the new Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel/Allison 1000 six-speed transmission powertrain is available on all Denali HDs.

The iconic Denali four-bar, chrome grille with round air inlets distinguishes the Sierra Denali HDs on the outside, along with body-color bumpers, chrome door handles, chrome accents and 17- (Dually), 18- and 20-inch polished forged aluminum wheels. On the inside they include Denali-specific brushed aluminum trim, power-adjustable pedals, a Bose premium surround audio system and 12-way power seats. Along with an optional heated steering wheel, heated and cooled leather-appointed seating is available. The exte-rior is offered in three colors: Black, Stealth Gray and White.

The balance of the new 2011 Sierra HD lineup is identified on the outside by new, three-bar grilles and powertrain-badged louvered hoods, along with a revised, full-width chrome steel front bumper and a new family of 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels. It’s beneath the skin, however, where they are truly separated from their predeces-sors – and the competition. Highlights include:

•Greater towing capability (21,700 lbs./9,843 kg) and payload (6,635 lbs./3,009 kg) supported by all-new fully-boxed, high-strength-steel frames and strong suspensions for maximum capability and exceptional ride characteristics

•New 6.6L Duramax diesel delivering more power, up to 11-per-cent greater highway fuel economy, up to 63-percent lower emis-sions, B20 biodiesel capability and quicker acceleration

2011 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot earned its reputation as one of the original innovators in the crossover SUV segment,

raising the prominence of on-road driving sophistication, three-row passenger capa-bility and higher fuel efficiency compared to conventional SUV designs.

Currently in its second generation, the Pilot continues to represent the refined, comfortable, and family-oriented vehicle choice with space for eight passengers and a wide variety of useful capabilities and premium features. New for 2011, the availability of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ expands to the Pilot EX-L model, a feature previously exclu-sive to the top-level Pilot Touring model.

The 250-horsepower V-6 engine pro-vides both performance and enhanced eff iciency with Variable Cylinder Management™, a technology that can deactivate up to three of the engine's six cylinders to save fuel when cruising or lightly accelerating.

Consistent with contemporary SUV styling, the exterior conveys a bold and

substantial approach that also helps to maximize interior space, yet the Pilot still maintains a garage-friendly exterior length of less than 16 feet. 2010 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 is the first vehicle in a new generation of the contemporary cross-over concept. It is a combi-

nation of a traditional city vehicle and an XC vehicle aimed for young, professional urban people with an active life. Volvo XC60 is a sporty and dynamic car with tasteful exterior and interior design and versatile functionality.

Business project manager: Lars Blenwall - The Volvo XC60 is now offered with Volvo's two new five-cylinder die-sel engines. The engines are a perfect combination of low fuel consumption, high perfor-mance and low noise levels. In addition, a front-wheel driven XC60 DRIVe model is available. It has the 2.4D version of the new five-cylinder diesel.

The range-topping, 5.0-liter, 510hp supercharged and 375hp naturally-aspi-rated V8s deliver supreme performance. Their uncompromising, world-class performance is not accompanied by an increase in fuel consumption and emis-sions compared to their predecessors. These lightweight, direct injection engines combine benchmark efficiency with out-standing power and torque. Acceleration in the naturally aspirated car to 60 mph is reached in just 7.2 seconds, while for those who want the utmost in perfor-mance, the supercharged V8 will rush to 60 mph in a mere 5.9 seconds.

Sportsmans Gear Magazine and Sunbuggy Fun Rentals teamed up recently for their most extreme adventure – The Vegas Mini Baja Chase. It was the ride of a lifetime!

Upon arrival at the Vegas facility, we were directed into a video safety meeting explaining the trail protocol – boy were we glad we paid attention because this was definitely extreme! The first command once inside the buggy was to buckle up the four-point harness, hold the steering wheel tight, and put the PEDAL TO THE METAL!

It’s hard to know what you’re getting into until you take off full throttle, blasting through sand dunes, dirt, rocks, and basically any obstacle in your path. We were throwing dirt, shooting rooster tails, and jumping every hill we went up. We were putting those buggies to the test and it really got our adrenaline pumping!

About 45 minutes into the adventure, we stopped for a much-needed break which included a water bottle and cleaning the dirt out of our buggies and clothes. Our guide was friendly and treated us like long-lost friends. He made the trip really exciting.

After the short break, we were wide open once again, hitting hills, climbing sand dunes and just having a blast! But, don’t take our word for it. 2011 Lexus GS350

Quick and smooth acceleration combined with the luxurious amenities bestowed upon the

Lexus GS 350 and GS 460 make the mid-size luxury sport sedans synonymous with refinement. After receiving several technology enhancements in 2010, the GS 350 and GS 460 receive standard Smart Stop Technology for 2011 as an additional measure of consumer confidence. The braking system enhancement will auto-matically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance

The GS gas luxury sport sedan comes in three models - GS 350 rear-wheel drive (RWD), GS 350 all-wheel drive (AWD)

and GS 460 RWD. Optimized for low internal friction, the GS 350's 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 303 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 274 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,600 rpm. A direct fuel-injection system provides much finer fuel-mixture control to improve both power and fuel efficiency. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) acts on both intake and exhaust valves to further enhance performance through a wide rpm range. A smooth-shifting six-speed transmission allows sequential shifting when desired.

The GS 460's V8 produces 342 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 339 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,100 rpm. The GS 460, like the GS 350, meets the EPA's Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II) certification. Lexus has been setting standards for powertrain smoothness

since its inception, and the GS 460's V8 and eight-speed automatic transmission continue that tradition. The transmission, like the six-speed automatic in the GS 350 models, allows manual shifting for a more engaging driving experience, and helps to maximize performance in certain driving situations. The GS 460 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, the GS 350 in 5.7 (5.8 for AWD).

2010 Infiniti G37 Sedan

Since Infiniti first burst on the automotive scene 20 years ago, it has maintained a repu-

tation as having not only one of the most dynamic product lineups in the industry but also one of the freshest – with a con-stant stream of new or enhanced models. The 2010 calendar year is no exception with a greatly refined Infiniti G37 Sedan debuting prior the scheduled launches of all-new, next generations of the Infiniti M and Infiniti QX.

For 2010, the G Sedan, Infiniti’s top-selling model, features revised exterior styling, an enhanced interior treatment and upgraded technology features.

The 2010 G37 Sedan continues to offer the standard 328-horsepower 3.7-liter VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) V6 and 7-speed automatic transmission intro-duced just last year. And, as appropriate for a cutting-edge performance sports sedan, the G is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission (G37 Sedan Sport 6MT), as well as with an advanced Infiniti Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system (G37x Sedan AWD).

The G37 Sedan’s strikingly seduc-tive exterior continues to be defined by its sleek wave form hood, signature G-style taillights, raked A-pillars and ath-letic stance. For 2010, the front fascia has been revised with new grille, headlights and bumper. The standard fog lights have been moved from their previous loca-tion in the headlight cluster to the lower fascia where they help provide a sporti-

er, more upscale appearance. G37 Sport models also receive a new, distinctive front fascia with separated headlights and fog lights. G37 and G37 Journey mod-els feature a new 17-inch 5-spoke “triple forks” wheel design. In the rear, all mod-els receive a revised rear fascia with an improved exhaust finisher treatment. Two new exterior colors are offered for 2010: Smoky Quartz and Graphite Shadow.

Inside, the G37 Sedan offers a craft-ed interior environment and luxury fea-tures such as standard leather-appointed seating and an available audiophile-qual-ity Infiniti Studio on Wheels® by Bose® premium audio system, which combines Bose®’s 3-way front door speaker array with 10-inch subwoofers and a parcel shelf-mounted subwoofer. A 2GB Music Box Flash Memory Music Server is avail-able with the Premium Package.

Enhancements for 2010 include a new, predominately white color scheme for

the gauges and LCD instrument display, improving both legibility and cohesive-ness of design. There is also a new cen-ter console design (7AT models) and the previous “Washi” aluminum trim has been replaced by “Shodo” aluminum trim inspired by the traditional art of Japanese calligraphy. The Wheat and Stone leather-appointed interior colors are now lighter (Graphite color also available), and new high-gloss Maple accents interior trim is now available.

In addition, a next-generation ver-sion of the Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System now includes features such as XM NavTraffic® with Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather™ with Real-Time Weather and 3-day forecast (XM® subscription required, sold sepa-rately), Streaming Audio via Bluetooth® and Zagat® Restaurant Guide. Other nav-igation system features include a 7.0-inch touch screen monitor and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.

Again for 2010, advanced G Sedan technologies include standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and RearView Monitor (newly standard in most models) and available Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta Exterior

The all-new 2011 Jetta has been com-pletely overhauled, inside and out. Its new wheelbase and exterior length are signifi-cantly bigger than its predecessor – result-ing in superior performance, more space and greater comfort. At 182.2 inches long, 57.2 inches tall and 70 inches wide, it is more than 2.9 inches longer than previous Jettas.

On the front end of the car, the design is defined by prominent horizontal lines. The high-gloss black radiator grille and the car’s trapezoidal headlights help cre-ate a distinct look. Under this is the fully painted, cleanly designed bumper. Below that, another cooling air intake and tray-shaped front spoil-er help give the car a sporty finish. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides; the shoulder section provides dynamic and mus-cular styling.

A great example of the unique styling characteristics of the Jetta is in the shoul-der or ‘tornado’ line and the powerfully emphasized arches of the wheel wells. Thanks to wide track dimensions, the wheel arches also form a precise transi-tion up to the tires (up to 18-inches long). Harmonized surfaces and sporty shoul-

ders dominate the rear section. Powerful in illumination and visually distinctive, the taillights are split into two sections, extending on either side from the fender into the tailgate. The all-new Jetta also fea-tures integrated turn signal indicators.

InteriorA key benefit of the extended wheel-

base is a more comfortable layout of the five-seat rear seating area. Legroom is now a class-leading 38.1 inches, a 2.7-inch gain from the previous model.

A common conceptual thread through-out the car is the intuitive controls and well-arranged instruments. Along with a newly designed steering wheel, drivers

will also enjoy a more comfortably and ergo-nomically designed gear shift grip. Further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for climate, radio and radio-navigation systems. This console section is also slightly inclined toward the driver for ideal align-ment of the cockpit.

Additionally, the round instruments are now in a more optimal viewing range with the multifunction display (trip computer) located between them.

The rear bench seatback is split 60/40 and folds, increasing the car’s versatility. The trunk can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch. Up to

six airbags (driver and front passenger air-bags, side airbags in front and side curtain airbags in front and rear) are also part of the equipment package.

Engine and TransmissionThe North American version of the all-

new 2011 Jetta features the powerful and efficient German engineering drivers have come to expect from Volkswagen. Four engines will be available in the U.S. and Canada, including a 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) Clean Diesel (140hp) featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs-ft. of torque (320 Newton-meters). The engine runs as quietly as a gasoline engine, but yields the torque of a sports car achieving 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. Additional engines include the 2.0 (115hp), 2.5 (170hp), and as of 2011, the 2.0 TSI (200hp). All Jetta engines will be offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. An automatic transmission will also be available with each engine ver-sion as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG – one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission sys-tems in the world. The TDI version attains a top fuel economy of 42 mpg highway, making Jetta one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market. (All fuel economy figures are manufacturer’s fuel economy estimates; EPA estimates are not currently available and actual mileage will vary). In the U.S., trim levels and build combina-tions that will be available are the S, SE, SEL, TDI and GLI.

Firestone Announces New WORK-RITE Kits Ideal for Trucks Carrying Additional Weight on the Front

Several new Work-Rite™ suspension kits have been developed by Firestone Industrial Products Company, LLC to provide added support to trucks carrying extra weight on the front with equip-ment like snow plows and winches.

Designed to help level the front end of vehicles, Firestone’s latest Work-Rite applications are available for 1994-2011 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 4WD trucks (part #8621); 1999-2010 Chevrolet and GMC 2500 HD/3500 HD trucks (part #8629); and 2011 Chevrolet/GMC 2500 HD/3500 HD models (part #8635).

The Work-Rite suspension kit, an entry-level load management system, features micro-cellular urethane load assist springs that

are mounted to the vehicle’s frame to supplement its factory sus-pension. The Work-Rite springs are offered in three densities that provide three separate spring-rates identified by color – white for 1/2-ton trucks, gray for 3/4-ton trucks and black for 1-ton trucks. In addition, Firestone offers the springs in two heights, 3.7 inches and 5.2 inches, to optimize performance for each application.

As the motorsports leader in the outdoors community and an award sponsor, Yamaha employees were invited to serve on a panel of judges to select a winner of the Wildlife Proficiency award from among five nominees. Proficiency awards recog-nize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands-on career expe-rience. Aaron Thomas Shawler Wheeler, of the LaRue County FFA Chapter in Kentucky, won this year’s award for his work on a farm/hunt operation in Kentucky.

2011 TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION AT WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS STATE HISTORIC SITE

The 175th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence will be recognized during a free two-day festival, February 26-27, 2011 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. This celebration brings the Republic of Texas era to life. The festival will be held on both Saturday and Sunday, from 10am until 5pm, with endless opportunities for family-oriented activities.

A special commemorative program will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Tom & Jane Bullock Amphitheater, featuring U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, a direct descendant of Texas Declaration of Independence signer Charles Taylor, as the keynote speaker. A contingent of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band will start things off at 1:00pm. Direct descendants of the 59 declaration signers will also be recognized during a dramatic roll call of each of the signer’s names.

During the program at 3:00pm, the Star of the Republic Museum, Arts Council of the Brazos Valley, and the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association will unveil The Big Picture! – a “Texas-sized” reproduction of a famous painting by artists Charles and Fanny Normann. The Normanns originally created their dramatic “Reading of the Texas Declaration of Independence” for the Texas Centennial Celebration in 1936. The image was divided into 72 segments, and then over 70 local artists, both professional and amateur, were assigned a segment of the image to paint on a 2 X 3 ft. panel. When complete, the segments will be assembled to create an 18 X 24 ft. reproduction of the original painting, three times its original size.

At 3:15pm, a Texas sized birthday cake will be served to audience members, with the help of the Washington County Historical Society Heritage Belles. Following the program, a performance of “The Convention of 1836” by the Navasota Theater Alliance will be held in the amphitheater at 4:00pm.

Throughout the two-day celebration, the 293 acre park along the Brazos River will be transported back to the time when Texas was a sovereign nation. Re-enactors in period clothing and members of the Texas Army, along with skilled craftsmen and talented musicians, will fill the park as Texas commemorates its inception. Statesmen of the era, such as Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and William Barret Travis, will be on hand to bring the history to life

On Saturday, the Star of the Republic Museum will open a new exhibit entitled “Fifty-nine for Freedom.” On March 2, 1836, as Santa Anna was approaching San Antonio, the delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos declared: “Our political connection with the Mexican nation has now forever ended, and the people of Texas do now constitute a free and independent republic.” By signing this Declaration, these men were signing their own death warrants, jeopardizing their property, and the lives of their families. “Fifty-nine for Freedom” will explore the life and contri-butions of each delegate with numerous artifacts and documents owned or created by many of the 59 signers.

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site features three attractions that are open year round – Independence Hall, the Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Living History Farm. All admission fees will be waived during the celebration weekend! Food vendors selling a variety of festival foods will be on site. This event is made possible through funding from Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association, Exxon Mobil Corporation and Bluebonnet Electric Co-op.
