ENGLISH LESSON: PERSUASIVE LANGAUGE DEVICES

Advertisements use a wide variety of persuasive language devices. Today we are going to

look at three of these, and identify them within various ads. In the next lesson, you will have

a look at the remaining two.

Are you familiar with some of these language devices?

• Fact

• Prepositional phrase

• Noun group

• Exaggeration

• Command

FACTS

A fact is a thing that is known or proved to be true. It can be effective to include facts in advertising

as it makes the viewers trust in the product. Here, advertisers use numbers, proofs, and real

examples to show how good their product works.

Here are some examples of facts used in advertising:

• Dettol floor cleaner cleans 99.99% germs

• Colgate is recommended by 9/10 dentists

• Gaviscon for acid reflux- works in just 6 seconds.

• Made in Australia

Have you seen any facts being used in any of the ads you’ve seen?

ACTIVTY 1: Can you identify the facts used in the following advertisements? Write your

answers in your English book.

Page 5: Spelling Words: 1. principle 6. staple 11. jewel 16. novel 2 ......9-10: The spelling focus for this week is: -Unaccented final syllables Spelling Words: 1. principle 6. staple 11.

PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

Prepositional phrases provide specific information for the reader. Think about a mountain, for

instance. A prepositional phrase is just about anything that we can say in relation to a mountain, like

'to the mountain,' 'over the mountain,' 'under the mountain,' 'toward the mountain.‘

ACTIVITY 2: Can you identify the prepositional phrases used in the following advertisements?

Write your answers in your English book.

NOUN GROUPS

A noun group is a group of words relating to, or building on, a noun. Noun groups are used in

advertising as they add more detail and interest to a product. Here are some example noun groups

used in advertising:

• Delicious and refreshing Coca-Cola

• Chocolate flavour, toasted rice- Coco Pops

• Vivid shine lipstick- Estee Lauder

ACTIVITY 3: Can you identify the noun groups used in the following advertisements? Write your

answers in your English book.

ACTIVITY 4: Have a look through some magazines or newspapers and see whether you can

find examples of a fact, a prepositional phrase and a noun group. Glue them into your

English exercise book with the language device clearly labelled.
