Mary Ann Walden 2013 Spelling Curriculum Grade 1 Routine This document is a complete spelling curriculum, encompassing some basic Language Arts skills, for Grade 1. No workbooks are necessary; simply make a copy of each page in the document for each student in the class. The complete word list for the week is on each page. Cut pages into thirds or halves as indicated. Collate pages and bundle the spelling lists in one binder clip, all of Monday in another, Tuesday, etc. Put these bundles in a folder with the day of the week at the top for easy location of the correct sheet, taking out the page needed for each day. Larger classrooms may require a separate folder for each day of the week. After the first couple weeks of school (in which I give careful instruction and guidance in how to complete each page), I generally have the sheets on the students’ desks when they arrive in the morning; they treat them as bell work and usually have the page completed before school begins each day. I then check the papers by lunchtime and have them in the cubbies for the students to take home in the afternoon. Dyslexic Tendencies? One trick I used to help students with dyslexia was to highlight each syllable in the word a different color. Or, in short words, highlight the base word one color and the suffix or prefix another. It was a pleasant surprise to see how helpful this little trick proved to be for the struggling student. Instruct the students to do their spelling early in the day so you can get it checked and recorded promptly. Then, the paper can go home with the students that afternoon and every family will have a copy of the spelling words to assist their children in learning them. YEAH! No late night calls to ask the teacher for the list. SWEET! Flow of the Program Grade 1 Routine Monday – Students are given the Spelling List for that week. They read each word to the teacher.
