Dear Family,

Your child will use the Spelling Connections program thisyear. Each week, the lesson will focus on a Spelling Strategythat describes a common spelling rule or principle. Thespelling words on the list for that week will illustrate theSpelling Strategy.

You can help your child succeed by spending time at homeeach week examining and writing the spelling words together.Make a game of spelling practice. Many simple games such as“Tic-Tac-Toe,” “I Spy,” and “Simon Says” can be adapted toinclude spelling words.

The Spelling Study Strategy is a method for studying anyspelling word. Help your child make a habit of using it forspelling practice. Follow these steps:

1. Look at the word.

2. Say the letters in the word. Think about how each sound is spelled.

3. Cover the word with your hand or close your eyes.

4. See the word in your mind. Spell the word to yourself.

5. Write the word.

6. Check your spelling against the spelling in the book.

Your child will also grow as a speller by writing stories,diaries, signs, and letters at home. Encourage your son ordaughter to write frequently while playing and exploring hobbies and during quiet times. Enjoy writing together!

Estimada familia:

Este año su hijo(a) usará el programa Conexiones con la ortografía(Spelling Connections). Cada semana, la lección enfocará unaEstrategia para la ortografía que describe una regla o un principiocomún de la ortografía. La lista de palabras para deletrear de esasemana demostrará la Estrategia para la ortografía.

Usted puede ayudar a que su hijo(a) tenga éxito por medio de pasarun rato en casa cada semana mirando y escribiendo las palabrasjuntos. Pueden hacer un juego de la práctica de la ortografía. Muchosjuegos sencillos, tales como Tic-Tac-Toe, I Spy (Yo Veo), y Simon Says(Simón Dice), pueden ser adaptados para incluir palabras paradeletrear.
