Once again we look to the season-opening Australian Grand Prix to answer many of the questions that have been building up over the European winter break.

The tightness of the modern Formula 1 regulations and the relative stability of the rule set year-on-year helped produce one of the least revealing pre-seasons in modern memory.

With the possibility that mere tenths will separate the entire Q3 order at Albert Park, the number of variables involved when analysing the relative testing performances are simply too great to obtain a clear read.

It is not until the final moments of Q3 come on Saturday, when everyone is running low fuel and new soft compound tyres, that well really know who has what.

As much as a Grand Prix weekend is about the race, for many that final 10 minutes of qualifying will be the highlight of the weekend.

It should be noted though the pecking order that gets established in Australia isnt necessarily going to be repeated elsewhere. Its a point that has become increasingly pertinent with Pirellis ever wackier tyres.

Reports of even higher degradation with the latest generation of the Italian rubber indicates that we could again be in for a season that sees relatively car performance fluctuate wild with track temperature.

As there are few greater contrasts than between a wintery Barcelona and a sun soaked Melbourne, it stands to reason that even if a pecking order could have been clearly defined from the tests, there are no guarantees that it would be the same as what well see in Australia...

It should be an intriguing weekend, to say the least.

  • A legends lookAlan Jones is back on the box and predicts a cracking year ahead

australias 1980 formula 1 World Champion alan Jones returns to the role of full-time television pundit this season.

Some 10 years after a local broadcast rights switch from Channel 9 to Network Ten brought Jones on-air partnership with Darrel Eastlake to an end, Jones steps into the Ten team alongside experienced broadcaster Greg Rust and former motorcycling great Darryl Beattie.

Jones to-the-point observations and cutting wit can be expected to add greatly

to the pre and post-race coverage, and to say that the retired racer is looking forward to it would be an understatement.

Theres always plenty to talk about when it comes to Formula 1, he tells Speedcafe.coms F1 Race Guide.

Whenever youve got different nationalities, lots and lots of money and egos you cant jump over, its always going to be interesting. I am really looking forward to the season.

My job wont be to say that the blue car

passed the red car, people can see that. My job is to say something at the end of the program that has people going shit, I didnt know that. Thats when I will have done my job.

The season itself promises to be a cracker, with winter testing indicating that the battle will be closer than ever before, particularly among heavyweight squads Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Mercedes..

I think its going to be very competitive this year because its an evolution rather

  • than a revolution in terms of the rule package and therefore the cars, notes Jones. I think theres going to be a lot more competition and a lot more overtaking this year and, lets face it, last year wasnt bad. I think the stability of the rules for this year will allow the other well-resourced squads to catch Red Bull up a bit.

Although it goes without saying that a lot has changed in Grand Prix racing since Jones last race in 1986, so too has the sport evolved greatly in the last three years alone. The move to faster-wearing Pirelli tyres in 2011 instantly changed the very fabric of how a Formula 1 race plays out.

The unpredictable, occasionally to the point of chaotic, style of tyre condition-dependent racing is something that Jones isnt completely sold on.

Im a bit mixed on those sort of issues, he says of the tyres. I come from an era where the green light came on, or the flag dropped, and you drove until you saw the other flag - the chequered one. There were no pitstops, no tyre changes, no nothing. You just had to manage your pace, your tyres and often your fuel economy all by yourself. Now theres a lot more strategy involved and half the time when a driver does a ripper start the first thing he does is thank his engineer for the launch control!

I dont know if I like how determined it is in the garages now, but I do like the unpredictability of it. It makes it interesting, and like everybody I want to turn the TV on at the beginning of a Grand Prix and not be sure of whos going to win.

Anything like DRS or KERS, etc, should be there if it makes it more unpredictable and encourages passing, though. Its a good move this year to tighten up the DRS

rules so that theyre the same for qualifying and the race. Allowing drivers to use it everywhere in qualifying and only on one or two straights in the race didnt really make any sense.

The knock-out qualifying format that they have now is brilliant. I like watching qualifying just as much as the race. The only issue that they have to keep under control is the importance of the tyre allocation. We dont want people sitting on pit wall because theyre saving tyres for the race, and we dont want races decided on Saturday afternoon based on who has what tyres left. Theres a real danger of seeing both of those situations play out during the year.

The stability in regulations from 2012 to 2013 may be a large factor in ensuring a close season ahead, but the prospect of widespread changes for 2014 has Jones excited too. After eight seasons with 2.4 litre V8s, the championship will move into a new 1.6 litre turbo era next year, bringing forced induction back into the mix for the first time in 25 years.

An increased emphasis on recovery systems and wholesale aerodynamic changes brought about by new, safety-conscious, nose height regulations will also add to the challenge for the teams.

I love change, says Jones. Im looking forward to seeing how everybody goes about the new challenge. As far as Im concerned they can change all the rules every two or three years. Itd be horrifically expensive, but at the same time it (finding solutions to new problems) is what Formula 1 is really about.

It gives the designers a chance to make their mark, and its also good for the engine manufacturers. Theres talk of Honda coming in under the new rules, which will be exciting, and itll be a fresh challenge for the existing players.

The only danger is that were going to have everyone on the street that has a 1.6 litre turbo car running around thinking theyre Sebastian Vettel!

    Round 1 - Australia I Cover Story

  • AJ on... red BullSebastian (Vettel) has put himself into

some fairly special company with three world titles. You cant take anything away from him, but if theres one criticism its that hes certainly a bloke that likes to get out front and stay there. Id like to see him get into a few more squabbles and come from a bit deeper in the pack this year. Hes got a reputation for not being at his best in the really hard wheel-to-wheel battles.

At the end of the day though, Sebs just very, very quick. More times than not hell out-qualify Mark (Webber) and get a better start... which sometimes isnt difficult! Mark has come up the hard way and I think mentally hes better placed than Seb in a wheel-to-wheel fight, but I think that Seb just has too much raw speed for him.

ferrariThe general consensus in the paddock is

that Fernando is the most complete driver in the field at the moment and its hard to disagree with that. I think theyve improved that Ferrari to a point where he could be a real contender for the championship. Hell be right there all year, without a doubt.

Felipe though is really under pressure. It was touch and go as to whether he stayed for 2013, and if he doesnt lift his game by a fair percentage then he wont be there next year.

mclarenItll be very interesting to see how

Sergio Perez goes at McLaren this year. I was impressed with his performance last year in the Sauber, and obviously McLaren was as well. Hes made a solid fist of the winter testing since joining McLaren, and could give Jenson a bit of a hurry-up.

mercedesThere are obviously reasons that Lewis

has gone to Mercedes that the public and myself arent aware of. Were told consistently that it wasnt money and

maybe he just felt that he needed a fresh home. You dont really know. But hes made the decision and at the end of the day I think itll be vindicated.

I think Mercedes will rise to the occasion. They have looked very good towards the end of the winter testing, and theyve certainly got the drivers to do the business now.

lotusKimi had a fantastic comeback last year.

To have a few years away from it dabbling in rally and NASCAR and all the rest of it, and come back with a team that a lot of people didnt consider to be a true front-runner, they did a wonderful job last year.

The Lotus has appeared very solid over the winter as well, so heres hoping they can keep that going. For Romain, hes just got to increase his brain size and decrease his ball size! Once he finds the balance hell be away.

    the best of the rest

I think the Williams could spring a few surprises this year. They seem to have a good car and theres nothing wrong with those Renault engines. On the driver front, Id put Maldonado in the same category as Grosjean. Hes got the raw speed to really be something, he just needs to harness it better. I think he could be a bit of a dark horse.

Naturally I was very pleased to see Williams take that breakthrough win last year. Its like your old school. You have a soft spot for them and I still know most of the people there. Whenever I go to a Grand Prix I spend a fair bit of time there and follow them more closely than the other teams. Its very gratifying to see them hopefully come good.

    1. rear WInG Relatively high levels of downforce are required for Albert Park so the car runs with a lot of rear wing. Not to Monaco levels, but comparable amounts to Barcelona and Silverstone.

    the Car

    Technical preview with Lotus F1

This is one of the tracks where there is a reasonable amount of track evolution. Between first practice and qualifying, with a similar fuel load, the track can be up to three seconds per lap quicker.

The weather can be blistering hot one day and freezing cold the next. There have been race weekends with 14C during qualifying and 40C during the race. It can change very quickly, and you have to set the car up to be able to cope with both.

Normally at this time of year its in the mid-twenties and very pleasant, which causes no trouble at all, but you do have to keep one eye on the forecast as it can change rapidly. This affects not just engine temperatures and so on but also how you use the tyres.

If theres a chance that the temperature may significantly rise or fall you have to have a compromise between qualifying and race setup.

turnS 1 + 2 The end of the straight is the fastest section of the track, with speeds of 300kph achieved. Theres then significant braking into turn 1. The gravel trap at the end of the start-finish straight sees a lot of action over the weekend. Its particularly attractive to cars on the first lap.

turn 3 Turn 3 offers a good overtaking opportunity.

turnS 11 + 12 The high speed chicane of turns 11 and 12 is taken in excess of 200 kph, with a reasonable kerb providing an extra challenge.

turnS 13 - 15 This final sector is relatively low speed compared to the rest of the track; conversely, theres a good amount of gain to be made here.

turnS 15 + 16 The last two turns, 15 and 16, are where you want the car to work best. These are very slow, and are where the most lap time can be gained from the car. If you increase grip through here by 5% you see a difference of around 0.2s per lap which is huge.

    2. BraKeS Its a circuit that is medium to high in terms of brake wear. Certainly nowhere near as fierce as Canada, but it wont be a track where we have our smallest brake ducts on.

    3. SuSPenSIon A reasonably soft car is required to be able to maximise the grip potential from the slippery Albert Park surface. Set-up evolves over the weekend to match the improving track surface, as the park roads grow into a race track through cars racing on them for the only time in the year.

As a counterpoint to the requirement for a soft car, there are sufficient change of direction requirements to need a stiffer set-up to aid responsiveness. Its important to have a strong front end, as understeer is potentially the main factor. Although there are some sections where good traction is important the priority is to have good turn in and change of direction through the chicanes.

    4. tYreS Medium and soft compounds. Its not a circuit thats particularly hard on tyres.

    5. front WInG Proportionally more front wing is used as a counter to the low-grip nature of the track which can provoke understeer.

    Round 1 - Australia I track details

  • Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing head to Melbourne as favourites for victory, but dont expect it to be a walk in the park for the three-time defending champions.

Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus and McLaren have all showed glimpses of great potential across the pre-season testing, indicating that were in for a hard-fought season.

Red Bull did not sparkle over the winter, but nor did it appear to want to; the team instead keeping its cards close to its chest.

One should keep in mind, however, that

2013 Formula 1 World Championship Entry List

in seasons with only modestly revised technical regulations, the pecking order does not often change greatly from that seen the previous year.

Just as he was at the conclusion of 2012, Fernando Alonso is perhaps the best placed to challenge the Red Bull show this weekend.

Mercedes, it appears, has made genuine steps forward, and a podium finish for either Nico Rosberg or new recruit Lewis Hamilton should not be a surprise here. Likewise, both Lotus drivers should be eyeing the rostrum, at a minimum.

Jenson Button has won three of the last four Australian Grands Prix, but the McLaren has been rather inconsistent over the winter testing, so predicting another victory is a significant gamble.

Of the rest, expect Nico Hulkenberg to be fighting the big guns in his Sauber, with both Force India drivers also sniffing points.

Less is expected of Toro Rosso and Williams, while the Caterhams and Marussias will have the back all to themselves after the off-season demise of HRT.
