Preschool Group

The purpose of the preschool group is to

increase the expressive communication

abilities of preschool age children. The group

is run by two certified speech language

pathologists. The children are scheduled to

attend one 1 ½ hour group session a week.

There are typically six children in a group.

Communication strategies, such as use of sign

language, pictures, and augmentative

communication devices, are implemented to

support and expand the child’s verbal

communication. The groups activities include

music, book time, art, and snack. Activities

are structured around increasing the child’s

opportunities and requirements to

communicate at a level appropriate to their

abilities.

Who qualifies for this program?

 children 2 years to pre-kindergarten

 children with speech/language delays or

overall developmental delays

 children with neuromotor speech disorders,

such as dysarthria or developmental apraxia

children with other diagnoses, such as Down

Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, etc.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy services are provided by

certified speech language pathologists.

Therapy focuses mainly on children with

neuromotor speech disorders and those who

use alternative forms of communication.

Children are typically scheduled for one to two

30 minute therapy sessions per week.

What are neuromotor speech disorders?

 speech disorders that affect the

coordination or tone of the muscles used to

produce speech

 examples are: developmental apraxia and

dysarthria

child may produce very few sounds and have

difficulties imitating sounds or words

 child may have imprecise speech

What are alternative forms of

communication?

 use of pictures or symbols

 use of voice output device

 use of sign language

Other Services

Speech and Language Screenings

The RiteCare clinicians perform screenings of

children’s articulation, expressive language,

and receptive language skills. These

screenings often help determine eligibility for

services.

Feeding and Swallowing

Some children have difficulties with swallowing

or eating different foods. When these

problems are severe, children are seen by a

certified speech therapist as part of a

Feeding and Swallowing Team who specialize in

providing techniques to assist with these

problems.

Computer Supported Literacy Website

To provide information on supporting literacy

for children with special needs, the Omaha

Scottish Rite Foundation in collaboration with

the Barkley Center of the University of

Nebraska-Lincoln created a web site. It

includes information about how to utilize

computers to support learning in the areas of

reading and writing for struggling students

(language based disorders, dyslexia, etc.).

Computer supported literacy technology, and

learning strategies are enhanced with video

clips to demonstrate some of the information.
