Kites of all shapes, sizes and colors will hopefully fill the sky above Camp Casey this weekend during the Whidbey Island Kite Festival. The festival is Saturday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 20 starting with registration at 9 a.m. each day and events starting at 10 a.m. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Olympic Mountains and Admiralty Inlet, the kite festival fea- tures ground and air displays of color and imagination. Activities include kids’ kitemaking, beginning sport kite lessons and sport kite demonstrations. One of the festival’s most popular children’s event, the Teddy Bear Drop, is slated for 1 p.m. both days. The event is for children ages 10 and younger. Children will also have the opportunity to learn how to fly a sport kite and play vari- ous kite games. A mass ascension, in which anyone can partici- pate, will be at noon both days. The first 50 people to sign up and participate in each event will receive a special- issue event pin. A mass ascension is where everyone is invited to fly a kite of the specified style on the field at the same time. The style of kite for Saturday is either delta or cellular and for Sunday, flat/ bowed or sparless. Fliers come from all over to compete. In years past the festival has had fliers from Oregon, Southern Washington and even Canada. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday eve- ning, the indoor kite com- petition takes place in the Coupeville High School gym. The event consists of fly- ing the kites without wind — using only the fliers’ body and hand movements. The festival will offer some food options, including hotdogs sold by the Central Whidbey Lions Club. There is also a raffle with items donated from individu- als and businesses from all over Whidbey Island. The raffle is the club’s main source of fundraising.
