THE STORY OF “SISTER KATE”

Kate Taylor released her first album, “SisterKate”, on the Atlantic Records’ Cotillion label,in 1971.

In the early summer of 1969 Kate went toLondon to visit her brother James who hadjust finished recording his first record. It wason Apple Records, the Beatles’ newly formedlabel. James introduced Kate to his producerPeter Asher, of the famed singing duo Peterand Gordon. Peter was now producingrecords for the Beatles.

One day James and Kate were invited to anafternoon gathering at Peter’s country homeoutside of London.Kate left London and came back home to theStates. A month later, Peter called her on thephone, told her he was moving to Los

Angeles and invited her to come to California to make a record.

As the record was being recorded, wonderful musicians contributed their talentsand songs to it. Carole King, Linda Rondstadt, James, Peter, Elton John, DannyKootch Kortchmar, and John Hartford were among the many artists who contributedsongs, musicianship, or both to “Sister Kate”.

The record was released and Kate went on tour. The first single off the record wasan Elton John tune entitled “Country Comfort” from his newly released first album;“Tumbleweed Connection”.

To this day, as Kate travels to perform, her audience continues to let her know justhow much they love “Sister Kate”. Often they appear with their copy of the now 46year old record for Kate, at long last, to sign.

It's the 45th anniversary of the greatest album by Badfinger, 1972's “Straight Up”, and theband's legendary guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Joey Molland brings the album to thestage in a bracing live show. Featuring 5 tracks written by Joey, Q magazine describedStraight Up as "brimming with mature melodies and bracing verse/chorus interplay", whileNME deemed it "a stone cold beauty of an album" and advised: "Love it like your mother…" George Harrison produced four tracks on the album, "Name of the Game","Suitcase","I'd Die Babe", the latter two written by Molland, and Pete Ham's "Day AfterDay", which gave the group a Top 5 U.S. single. AllMusic says " there's absolutely no fillerand everybody is in top form". The album, which also featured "Baby Blue", stayed on theBillboard Top Pop Albums chart for 32 weeks. Badfinger's classic lineup of Tom Evans, Pete Ham, Mike Gibbins, and Joey Molland came

Badfinger's classic lineup of Tom Evans, Pete Ham, Mike Gibbins, and Joey Molland cametogether in 1969, as the group changed it's name from the Iveys. One of the originalsignings to the Beatles’ Apple Records label, they had their first hit single with a PaulMcCartney penned song, "Come and Get It", which went to #7 in the U.S. charts. Badfingerfollowed this with their own compositions "No Matter What", "Day After Day" (produced byGeorge Harrison), and "Baby Blue", which went to #8, #4 and #14 respectively.

Both Maria Carey(1994) and Harry Nilsson(1971) covered Badfinger's classic ballad"Without You" and took it to #1 on the U.S. charts. Joey Molland and Badfinger playedalongside John Lennon on his “Imagine” album, with Ringo on his smash “It Don't ComeEasy”, and with George Harrison on his "All Things Must Pass". On stage, they backedGeorge, Ringo, and Bob Dylan on the Concert for Bangladesh.

Today Badfinger features original guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Joey Molland. InOctober 2010, Apple reissued the Badfinger catalog, all with bonus tracks, as part of amassive promotional effort to celebrate all the great artists that are part of the Applefamily. The albums “Magic Christian Music”, “No Dice”, “Straight Up”, and “Ass” are allbeing reissued, with a total of 21 combined bonus tracks.

Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” has enjoyed extensive and enduring appeal in television and film.It was featured in Martin Scorcese’s film, “The Departed,” the highly popular TV drama,“The O.C.”, but its most spectacular resurgence came when it was featured in the closingscene of the finale of AMC’s classic series, “Breaking Bad” in September 2013. In the firstfull week following the finale of the show, the group's "Baby Blue," equaled its 1972 Hot100 success, by roaring back onto the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart at No. 14, thanks tohefty sales and streaming gains.

Joey Molland released a new record, titled “Return to Memphis”, in 2014.

Nighttown's 12 Days of "Home for the Holidays"

Dynamic Vocalist back home after several World Tours with anAll-Star Lineup for Home for the Holidays at Nighttown!

Featuring: Vanessa Rubin-vocals, Larry Willis-piano (NYC), PeterDominguez-acoustic bass, & Reggie Jackson-drums (NYC cominghome to Cleveland). Endowed with the kind of liquid phrasing and sheer wisdom that comes from depthof experience on the jazz performance campaign trail, Vanessa Rubin is an ever-evolving classic singer in the making. The development of a true jazz singer is along-range prospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into atrue instrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys andperils; such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable ofemploying the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper toshout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to uptempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.

One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; therelationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust. Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails. From the time she joined theNew York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of suchgrandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has beenuniversal. Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around a song, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing that music.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is quiteimpressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, BillyHiggins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, Don Braden,Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and JamesWilliams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms. Rubin’sartistry. More recently she has completed auspicious global tours with HerbieHancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

North Coast Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist & Group hit theStage at Nighttown! Featuring music from his brand new CD"Road Trip".Over the past two decades, urban jazz icons Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler havepaved the way for emerging artists to take a bolder approach to blending theirpassions for instrumental pop, jazz and soul and gospel music. While those two

passions for instrumental pop, jazz and soul and gospel music. While those twoartists were well established before they began recording gospel and worshipalbums – and rarely blend the two styles on a single project – saxophonist AndreCavor is unabashedly sharing his lifelong love for both styles of music from the getgo. True to its title, the Cleveland based performer’s independent debut album RoadTrip chronicles his multi-faceted journey – starting with playing the sax in churchand, over the past decade, founding and leading The Cavor Project, an 11 pieceensemble renowned as one of the most diverse bands in the city. Andre found theperfect producer to take his artistry to the next level in Darren Rahn, a saxophonistand artist who has worked his studio magic for Whalum and Butler in addition togenre greats Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne andJeff Lorber. “Mixing contemporary jazz and gospel songs on Road Trip felt like a naturalextension of my many live performances over the years,” says Andre, who firstbegan playing the sax at 16 but let it go during his eight year stint in the armybefore rediscovering it in the early 2000s. “So many people I have played for and entertained liked and respondedemotionally to both sides of my artistry,” he adds. “When I started thinking aboutdoing my first solo album, I thought I should share everything I truly love to do. Ofcourse, I heard from some fellow sax players and other naysayers, telling me thatnew artists should never mix gospel and smooth jazz/R&B, that audiences won’t getit for some reason. My response was, ‘I honestly don’t think you were conceived to agospel tune!’ and then told them I believed that people that love church and Godalso love R&B. I felt it was important to share my entire self with people. Includingboth on Road Trip was the perfect way to share my entire self with everyone.” Andre laid the foundation for Road Trip with hundreds of performances as leader ofThe Cavor Project, which has been a mainstay on the Cleveland music scene since2007. The band is known for infusing fresh, explosive energy into vocal andinstrumental classics from the 80’s through 2017 and spicing up their set list withdynamic originals. The Cavor Project performs a grooving mix of R&B, smooth jazz,hip-hop, reggae, pop, blues, rock and gospel. When I see the smiles on people’s faces when they hear my music, it’s anoverwhelming feeling and confirmation that I’m doing exactly what I am put here todo. My goal is always to make people happy, and now with the release of Road Trip,I’m excited about reaching beyond my comfort zone and sharing the joy with morepeople.”

New Year's Eve Spectacular - DOMINICK FARINACCI$40.00 Sunday 12/31 7:30 pm Buy Tickets

Nighttown’s Special New Year's Eve Tripleheader!!

Trumpet Superstar back on Nighttown Stage with All-Star Groupfor NYE Celebration! On Nighttown's fully covered, and heatedSecret Garden Patio.

Seating Limited!Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "ShortStories" -- a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres andgenerations united by the trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringingtogether songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kingsas well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musicaluniverse, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have anarrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that WyntonMarsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001,Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as theinaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazz curriculum. During his schoolyears and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as asoloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz atLincoln Center and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildestdreams. Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened hisactivities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through hismusic and outreach activities, to unite communities and overcome barriers ofevery sort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can'texist without these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the comingtogether of two kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town(Cleveland, Ohio), separated by just under half a century in age. What unites themis a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines the highest musical standards witha desire to be agents of change.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to havelost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into yourconsciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that DominickFarinacci is not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, butalso that what is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's ownwords: "While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come torepresent a culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music & wellness and community-based cultural collaborations -unfolding in the music and touring around the world."

New Year's Eve Spectacular - JANIS SIEGEL$50.00 Sunday 12/31 8:00 pm Buy Tickets

Nighttown’s Special New Year's Eve Tripleheader!!

Vocalist from The Manhattan Transfer brings in the New Yearlive on Nighttown's Main Stage with her All Star NYC Group!

Featuring: Janis Siegel-Vocals, John DiMartino-piano, BorisKozlov-acoustic bass, & Keith Hall-drums.Over the past three and a half decades, the voice of Janis Siegel -- a nine-timeGrammy winner and a seventeen-time Grammy nominee -- has been anundeniable force in The Manhattan Transfer's diverse musical catalog. Alongsideher career as a member of this 36-year musical institution, Siegel has alsosustained a solo career that has spawned more than a half dozen finely-crafted soloalbums and numerous collaborative projects, amassed a large international fanbase and garnered consistently high critical praise.

Siegel learned about the music business at an early age. By the time she was 12,she was singing with an all-girl pop trio called The Young Generation. "WhenMotown became popular, I fell head over heels for it, as well as for people likeAretha Franklin. And of course, I went insane over the Beatles. But I also lovedBarbra Streisand. And living in Brooklyn, I saw a lot of Broadway shows too." On thejazz side, she remembers John Coltrane as her musical idol during her high schooland college years. But it was a chance encounter that steered her into TheManhattan Transfer.

Janis Siegel met Tim Hauser at a party, and he asked her to sing on some demoshe'd been working on. Soon Hauser invited Siegel to join a four-part vocal groupthat he'd been trying to reconstruct. When she joined Hauser, Laurel Massé andAlan Paul, the Manhattan Transfer was born. The group's self-titled debut album in1975 ushered in a renaissance in vocal-based music and marked the openingchapter of the foursome's quarter-century-plus success story.

Over the years, Janis' unmistakable voice has become one of the group's mostrecognizable trademarks. She sang lead on some of the Transfer's biggest hits, such as "Operator," "Chanson D'Amour," "Twilight Zone," "Birdland," "Ray'sRockhouse," "Sassy," "Spice of Life," "Mystery," and "The Boy from N.Y.C." She alsogained a reputation as a vocal arranger by writing five of the charts for the group'sacclaimed masterwork, Vocalese, seven charts for the group's Grammy-winningalbum Brasil, and won a Grammy herself in 1980 for her arrangement of "Birdland."In 1993, she and her Manhattan Transfer colleagues received their honorarydoctorates from the Berklee School of Music, and in 1999 they were among the firstclass of inductees into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

But Siegel has been riding a dual career track for nearly two decades. Shelaunched her solo career in 1982 on Atlantic Records with the release ofExperiment in White produced by Joel Dorn. Her followup solo effort, At Home, earned her a Grammy nomination in 1987 for Best Female Jazz Vocal.
