The Knowledge Society
“Today, a national reconstruction and transformation is desirable, using education, science and technology conduit, as a basis for incubating a knowledge-based society, where merit, fairness, accountability, transparent justice and equity are enthroned and merit abundantly rewarded.
There is need to evolve a society where machines and simple but logic systems are domesticated and efficiently put to work. We would require abundant courage and foresight to pull this off and get Nigeria where it rightly belongs – the comity of first-class knowledge nations!
However, this profile can no longer be wished in today’s world, it must be earned and seen to be earned!” (Reference: Preparing for the Knowledge Economy – Chris Uwaje)

IT as Global Revolution: Advances in the emerging new economy has redefined the term infrastructure as the rapid build-up to Information Society (IS) continues. National Information Infrastructure today, represents the universally acceptable:
It includes, Education Portal, Print & electronic media, telephone network system, broadcast and cable television
Digital libraries, bookstores, remotely accessible databases and the Internet – incorporating
Broadband-switched networks with digital connections to homes and public utilities, IP based Security Surveillance Cameras Etc.
Needless to state the fundamental need for an enabling environment such as uninterruptible power source, good road networks, clean water and skilled human infrastructure and security to life and property. All these undoubtedly also be the concern of policy makers in our Universities.

The Knowledge Society is here. The three forces that will shape the knowledge economy are: (a) Globalization of products for the new economy(b) Knowledge and RD&D intensity, and(c) Connectivity of multi-disciplinary Resources. Moving from ICT to IKT The ‘skills needs’ to sustain tomorrow’s society will be those associated with information and knowledge rather than industrial skills – is no longer a hypothesis, but a foregone conclusion.
The world is gradually moving from ICT to IKT (from Information and Communication Technologies to Innovation and Knowledge Technology – where communication as
access medium is ‘given’ and as permanent as electricity).

The Internet is a golden opportunity for global competitiveness. All nations must take the global ICT Revolution seriously.Having explored the processes of innovation and creativity, we have all agreed and subscribed to the fact that Machine (technology) society is a knowledge-based, actionable and innovative society.
It is therefore not only necessary but strategic to ensure that Research and Development efforts are
intensified in our Education Institutions to expand the knowledge frontiers for innovation, creativity and
commercialization of the products and services thereof.
Click to edit Master title styleRecommendation To Conclude, Lessons learned suggest that we must engage the following next steps:1. Ensure that Funding Education constitute a significant proportion of the National Budget – at a minimum of 21% to enhance the quality of productive skill and Intellectual Property.2. Accelerate the pace of Technology Research and Development on Cloud Computing and Nano-Technologies in our Universities, linking them mandatorily to the Industry.3.Develop the Nigerian-Child Technology Innovators Database System and strategies to link and connect the accumulated intellectual properties in our education institutions, to the Industry and the Government Institution.4.Ensure that process selection of innovative capacities is transparent and chosen on merit and provide incentives to innovators and investors in technology innovation.5. Establish the Nigeria Knowledge Bank and a strategic personal security schemes for the safety of life of Nigeria innovators at home and in the Diaspora.
