ock ‘n Red Deer, Central Alberta’s celebration of classic cars and vintage hot rods and trucks is set to return to Red Deer and
Westerner Park from July 31 through August 2, 2015. Organized and presented by the Alberta Super Run Association, the three day show is Western Canada’s largest gathering of vintage and hot rod vehicles and features an exciting open cruise night on the streets of downtown Red Deer on Friday followed by a dazzling two day show of over 800 classic vehicles and hot rods at Westerner Park. The show also features four days of activities for registered exhibitors including impromptu show and shines and cruises to different destinations throughout Central Alberta,
The Alberta Super Run Association is a not-for-profit organization representing various
Alberta car and hot rod clubs that are dedicated to preserving and promoting the cars, culture and music of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. The show itself is presented and produced entirely by volunteers from Alberta car clubs, who work to promote the exciting hobby of car restoration and collecting.
Over the years Rock ‘n Red Deer has established itself as a destination event that draws exhibitors and participants from all over Western Canada and the northwest border
states. “The original show centered pretty much around car show type static vehicle displays”, says Alberta Super Run President Dick Wallace. “But we’ve expanded the event each time to the point where we now offer a more broadly themed entertainment package that still showcases the vehicles but appeals to more people”.
“Rock ‘n Red Deer is basically nostalgia on wheels”, says Wallace. “Many of our exhibitors as well as the show going public remember these vehicles as having a significant impact on their lives when they were younger and owning and viewing them today brings back a lot of happy memories. The age of our exhibitors ranges from late twenties and early thirties right on up to people in their late seventies. All that you need is a love for vintage vehicles and a good memory”

Rock ’N Red DeerI RED DEER ADVOCATE, FRIDAY JULY 24, 20156
This year’s action begins on Friday with the Downtown Cruise Night hosted by the Downtown Business Association from 6:00 to 10:00pm. The evening will feature the glitz and glitter and rumble of hundreds of highly polished and chromed cars and hot rods cruising through the downtown area along with sounds of classic rock and roll music. Some downtown streets will be blocked off to allow participating vehicles to move freely through the area so be sure to come early as parking will be at a premium.
Rock ‘n Red Deer hits full speed at the Westerner Park Grounds on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, featuring a public exhibition of over 800 classic hot rods and vintage cars and trucks from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, as well as vendor booths in the Harvest Center and Vendors Alley. The show is a real treat for those searching for everything from parts for their ride the latest in rodder technology, custom built rods, nostalgic signs and souvenirs or the latest in car care technology. Also featured are a Pit Stop Competition where teams of two do a tire change on a mockup vehicle; Hoola Hoop contests for kids and big kids at heart, beer gardens and the rock and roll styling’s of Dr. D’s Canadian Bandstand providing continuous live entertainment at the outdoor stage both Saturday and Sunday.
Show Awards will be presented at 3:00pm on Sunday to recognize exhibitor’s efforts, with the Participants Choice Top Ten Awards presented by the show’s Title Sponsor, Kipp Scott BUICK • GMC • CADILLAC. The People’s Choice Award will provide the public with an opportunity to select by ballot their favorite vehicle on display on Saturday and Sunday - YOU BE THE JUDGE! Other awards include Canadian Hot Rod Magazine’s Young Guns Award which will be presented to exhibitors under 25 and an Old Geezers Award which will be presented to exhibitors over 65. The Road Angel Award will be given to a female owner-driver, the Long Distance Award to the exhibitor who has driven furthest to be in the show and the Hard Luck Award
will be presented to the participant experiencing the greatest challenge in making it to the event, mechanical or otherwise.
Rock ‘n Red Deer and Alberta Super Run Association, the show’s organizers also make a continuing effort to give back to the community in thanks for their support. The show’s net proceeds have been and continue to be directed in support of STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) with a total contribution of $107,000.00 to date. The show would never be possible without the many business sponsorships and the volunteer assistance of the committee club memberships. In
addition to the support for STARS, a series of scholarships have been set up to provide funding for students enrolled in Red Deer Secondary School Automotive Programs. “We think it’s important to create a legacy”, says Super Run President Dick Wallace. “And both the Young Guns Awards and the scholarships are both aimed at bringing young people into the hobby and to promoting an ongoing interest in automotives and classic cars and hot rods”.

Rock ’N Red DeerI RED DEER ADVOCATE, FRIDAY JULY 24, 20158
Ah, the ‘50s: Before there were iPods, a quarter would get you five songs in the jukebox. Before punk
rock, there was simply rock & roll. Before Elvis Costello, there was Elvis Presley. Before Crocs, there were socks (bobby socks, that is). If you’re nostalgic for any of these iconic ‘50s symbols, you can get more than your fill at Rock’N Red Deer 2015.
A fundraising initiative of the Alberta SuperRun Association since 1997, the tri-yearly event will take place July 27 – 31 at the Westerner Park in Red Deer. Celebrating the cars, music, and culture of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, Rock’N Red Deer has donated more than one hundred thousand dollars to the Shock Trauma Rescue Society (STARS).
Dick Wallace, Alberta SuperRun Association President, says STARS is a perfect fit for the fundraising initiative. “We support their work, in part because both organizations have cars in common. Unfortunately, STARS crews often have an unfortunate relationship with cars and drivers. But any of us, at any time, could require their services.”
As a not for profit with charitable status, Alberta SuperRun Association is governed by a committee representing Alberta car club members. Similar events occur in other prairie provinces in alternating years.
Rock’N Red Deer draws up to 15,000 visitors to view 850 vintage and classic vehicles, hot rods, and cruisers. Wallace says Red Deer has
become a vacation destination for car enthusiasts as well as for those who love and are nostalgic about a bygone era.
“Red Deer is the perfect place for this event,” he says, noting that the venue of Westerner Park is highly accessible and that the city has all the facilities to accommodate and host visitors. “It has a compact environment and the vehicles stand out during the cruise events. Ross and Gaetz Avenue have a wonderful layout in both directions for ‘cruising main street’ just as they did back in the day,” according to Wallace.
“We expect close to 1,000 cars cruising downtown Red Deer on Friday night, “ he says. “And it’s an open cruise, so the public can just show up and participate. People

Car club members descend upon Red Deer from across Canada and beyond. “There are cars coming from Ontario, from B.C, even from South Dakota,” Wallace says. Apparently, the distance isn’t prohibitive for most of these vehicles. “In fact, classic cars are designed to be driven,” he goes on to say. “If you have a breakdown, you can usually fix it on the side of the road. You’ll find all kinds of people will stop to give you a hand when they see a classic car. There’s no excuse not to drive them.”
Along with public viewings of the cars, the days are jammed with fun for kids, a welcome party, vendor sales, live music, prizes, and lots to eat at the food concessions. At a special members-only sit banquet and dance on Saturday night, guests will hear a life-changing testimonial from a STARS recipient.
An award-winning organization recognized for its outstanding service, STARS brings technology and medical equipment to patients and transports critically injured patients to advanced care. Specially trained doctors, nurses, and paramedics deliver in-flight medical expertise and treatment. Service to western Canadian communities is delivered from bases in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.
Following the first flight in 1985 transporting a critically ill infant, by 2002 STARS crews had surpassed ten thousand missions. In fact, in the 2014/15 fiscal year alone, over eighteen hundred missions were carried out. Looking at the mission record (http://www.stars.ca/ab/), it seems as if no community in Alberta has been untouched by the STARS service. Crews respond to a gamut of diverse medical and emergency situations, from motor vehicle accidents to search and rescue operations. STARS was included in emergency strategies for a political summit in Kananaskis and at the 1988 Olympic games in Calgary. So esteemed is the reach of the organization, STARS founder Dr. Gregory Powell was made an Officer in the Order of Canada in 2007
Megan Thomas, Event Coordinator at STARS says the organization is closely tied to the communities they interact with. “There’s only 1 or 2 degrees of separation between STARS and the people we serve. It’s inspiring for us to get out to events like this one and meet the public. “
“Approximately seventy five per cent of our funding comes from the public, it’s why we’re here,” she says. Funds are required to meet the on-going costs of maintaining the helicopter, purchase medical equipment, and to provide education and training.

“A huge part of our role is to provide hope,” Thomas says. “We support events like this because they play a big part in providing that hope to people. We’re truly grateful .”
Wallace says the Alberta SuperRun Association hasn’t tracked the exact number of volunteer hours that have contributed to the event. However, ‘countless hours’ have been spent in preparation and in carrying out the many tasks and details that go into every Rock’N Red Deer. “We’re grateful to Kip Scott Buick GMC Cadillac and all the other sponsors who are committed to this event. We have been able to secure sponsorship for every element, and they are the backbone of the show.”
Who isn’t nostalgic for the music and culture of another time? However, the fundraising of Rock’N Red Deer on behalf of STARS is a valuable reminder that we thankfully live in an era of access to high tech and life-saving in-flight medical care. And that’s something to plug your quarter into the jukebox and dance your socks off for!

The Name Game: HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE
CAR GUY LANGUAGE OF LoveJim Sutherland
mystarcollectorcar.com
A photo of several abandoned trucks at an abandoned work site came across my newsfeed and became the basis for this piece on car guy lingo.
The photographer called the entire truck collection “Corn-binders”; a term only associated with International Harvester trucks-except his photo contained considerably more General Motors trucks than IH trucks. The newsfeed is directed more towards photography than vintage trucks, but it was a bit jarring for me because of its blanket assessment of the old iron in the photo.
The person who took the photo was clearly not a car guy, so I decided to provide a list of the most popular nicknames for vintage rides to help people like him:
“DEUCE COUPE” is a nickname given to a 1932 Ford coupe and popularized by the iconic Beach Boys song,
‘Little Deuce Coupe’.
The two-seaters from Ford made a perfect base model for a hot rod project and the car has become one of the legends in the hobby.
“SCREAMING CHICKEN” is a Pontiac Trans Am with the fierce eagle decal on the hood. The cars were equipped with the baddest Poncho engine options available in the pre/post-emission era of the muscle car market and looked very cool even after the drop in horsepower.
Incidentally, “PONCHO” is a name given to any Pontiac model. The name is a shortened version of Pontiac and has become synonymous with the famous General Motors brand no longer in production.
“MOPAR” is anything from the Chrysler family and the name extends from the early days of Chrysler Motor Parts Division, a parts supply wing for them. The name was shortened to Mopar and became a familiar name for Chrysler parts in this context. Eventually Mopar became directly associated with Chrysler vehicles.
“NOMAD” is most commonly associated with the 1955-57 Chevy two door station wagon. The Nomad model became the base platform for many hot-rodders who made the car a legend on the street and track when they put extra muscle under the hood.

“HIGH/HI-BOY” is an early 30s era hot rod stripped down to its metal underwear to lose weight and left sitting on its frame rails. The result is a taller appearance because the body has not been lowered for a sleeker low-to-the-ground stance.
“THUNDER CHICKEN” is a name given to the famous Thunderbird model from Ford. The name is another play on the avian theme, like the Trans Am.
“SHOE BOX” is most commonly associated with the late 40s/early 50s Ford. The 1949 Ford was the first new design for Ford after World War II because they had to re-tool their factories from the war effort. The car had sleeker sides than its predecessors and marked a new age for automotive world at the time.
“PANEL” is a term for a light truck or car with an enclosed area behind the driver compartment right to
the rear bumper that typically has no side windows from the factory. The panel was typically used as a commercial vehicle for delivery or trades.
There you have it, a brief glossary of car guy terms to help you understand some of the lingo at the upcoming car show season.

SHOULD YOU BUY IT DONE OR INVEST IN A PROJECT FROM DAY ONE?
Jerry Sutherlandmystarcollectorcar.com
Most of us are well aware of the economics behind a car restoration because it’s not the kind of investment
that makes millionaires out of average guys.
The old joke is true, “Want to make a million on an old car? Spend 5 million”.
Nevertheless, car guys do invest in restorations because they are truly a labor of love, but is there an advantage to buying a completed project?
The short answer is yes, no, maybe...
The easiest answer is yes because we all know that you can never recover the $150,000 you spend on a $50,000 car. If you told your wife that you could make a lot of money on a restoration, your next stop better be a divorce lawyer.
There is no shortage of stories
about great buys where a guy picked up a 98 point car with 200K invested in it for 75K.
Buyers can be heartless because they don’t care what you spent on your car. In fact, they want to pound the stuffing out of you, so dragging out the repair bills won’t make them want to spend more to offset your loss. In fact, they want to make that loss even bigger, so ten cents on the dollar is music to their ears.
That’s the best case scenario and it happens enough to make an auction a pretty good gamble, but what happens when it doesn’t work out?
Trevor Comfort has been in the restoration game for a long time and
he’s a guy who has a big heart for fellow car guys, so he offered some pretty sound advice to a buddy, “This poor guy stopped his at home restoration so I simply told him his options. I told him he could possibly buy a DONE car for about 20 grand as one option, so he made the decision to buy a shiny car-that was done on his own.He goes to a high end auction and finds a car. It looked super sweet”.
Trevor admitted, “If I had gone with him I would have said it was one of the nicest I’ve seen”.
Unfortunately, there was no Walt Disney ending with this car, “He owned it TWO months and all these little bubbles showed up around his wheel openings. The quarters had ten pounds of sand in them”.
The diagnosis was brutal, “ It must be noted that we recommended replacing the whole quarters left & right, that may also have led to wheel tubs, inner quarters etc, est cost of that proper repair could be $15,000.00 or more”.

Car projects are massive technical challenges that
require expertise and artistry and, if you don’t have those two assets, then bring a big check.

Nobody felt worse than Trevor, but it did reinforce his personal philosophy about restorations, “We get a lot of feedback when we give an estimate and the guy says he can buy one that’s done for a lot less. You have to remember that these cars can even fool me until you open them up. I’ve seen panels welded over panels lots of times and I’m the guy who has to deliver the news that he’s looking at a lot of work. This is a very common way lots of quarters are installed, but not at my shop.
Occasionally things do work out somewhat better, “It’s not very often that we can save old quarters that were not installed properly. This car is a exception, I peeled off the lap weld area, cleaned off the rust, then butt welded the quarter to the car, the way it should have been done to begin with”.
This is a far more typical example of what happens after you look under the shiny paint and it doesn’t have a happy ending, “Here is another lap welded quarter, too far gone to save”.
Trevor is adamant about why he believes in investing in a step by step process, “So while good restorations can break the bank, buying a shiny car is not always the answer. I am aware that there are some real good cars out there, but once they are painted, how does any one tell?”.
He explained how the outcome is always a moving target when there
are suprises under the skin, “Repairs like this are only done if the customer tells us to do it. He understands we have done our best to remove the bad metal, and that we have no idea how long the rest of the original sheet metal will hold out. This is a good repair in a good-better-best situation”.
Rust is the single biggest issue with any project and Trevor explained how
“Any time we talk tech, about rust repair I think it should always be said that no matter how far you strip a car body down, there is always a chance of rust hiding in between two panels that you can not see or gain access to”

sneaky it is, “Any time we talk tech, about rust repair I think it should always be said that no matter how far you strip a car body down, there is always a chance of rust hiding in between two panels that you can not see or gain access to. For example I could show you a couple spots on my ‘57 where rust is hiding under the drip rails, I know it’s there but unless I drill out hundreds of spot welds and peel every panel back to gain access to that area I can’t fix it and simply have to keep it in check. My car was last painted in 2005 and that rust hiding under the drip rail now has to be cleaned up. So it has taken 9 years to get to the point where it has to be cleaned up again. Once again we are reminded why rust is often called “cancer”.
Drip rails are great hiding places, “Here is a perfect example where all this rust was hiding under the drip rail panel, if we did not notice it creeping out at the edges it would have gone unnoticed. After sandblasting, a new drip rail panel is installed. Good for another 40 years”.
Drip rails aren’t the only hidden problem areas, “This rust was hiding under the dash sheet metal, hiding under the windshield. When the car came in there were NO signs of a problem here”.
Trevor didn’t hesitate to point out other slipshod rust repair methods like gobs of filler, “It’s not just rust that hides under the paint, take a look at what we found under the paint on this project”.
This is particularly important when you’re talking about a “keeper” car, “Yes, I would recommend opening it up and doing it right. It is no secret that restorations cost more money than the market value of most cars.
The real secret is people need to understand that even the nicest looking car going across the auction block can be hiding a horror story cars are clearly patched up for resale”.
The key to the debate about buying a “done” car versus a full-blown restoration is simple.
How long are you going to own the car?
If the answer is forever, then you need to be right there to gut that car like a fish, open it up, solve the rust problems and enjoy a happily ever after ending.
Trevor had the last word on buying a finished car.“If I were buying a painted car I would find one that has
had been painted for 5 years or more, in most cases any bad repairs should show up by that time”.
