Kayakers across southern Alberta are looking to the Crowsnest Pass to be-come a training site for championship hopefuls, said Chuck Lee, president of the Alberta Whitewater Association. His organization is working on two potential projects in the Pass that could open up the area to the sport to provide more recreation opportunities. “We’re looking at options to develop whitewater sites in Crowsnest Pass,” said Lee, “and are in the preliminary stages of government applications.” As reported in The Crowsnest Pass Free Press on Jan. 9, the first site is upstream from the East Blairmore en-tranceway. They hope to remove extra gravel from the river bed that has silted in the deeper parts of the main channel and reposition rocks that have moved, deepening the channel. The second site the organization wants to modify is below Frank Lake. There is a stretch downstream of
the lake where the river has natural steps and the river cascades in varying drops of up to 12 to 15 feet, Lee said. They propose repositioning about 150 metres of the rocks to create a safer paddle. “It’s quite exciting and a very impres-sive stretch of water, but the rocks are all jumbled together,” said Lee. “Lots of our members paddle below the lake in Frank but it’s very dangerous with the way the rocks are situated.” The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Alberta Environment & Sus-tainable Resource Development, Fish & Wildlife, and the Public Lands Act must approve the projects. Approval is also being sought from Alberta Culture to create a walking trail from the gravel road to the east side of the lake. The trail is less than 100 metres and would be only for non-motorized traffic, said Lee. This would allow kayakers to access the river as well as others who wish to paddle into the lake, he added. “It will make Frank safer and more
fun. More people will paddle there,” he said. He said the organization is looking at only one of the two projects, not both, and that each one has advantages. The Frank site would be ideal to host training events and time trials for the North American championships, he said, as it’s a “complex and difficult river”. The Blairmore site has several ad-vantages, including good visibility and accessible parking. If approved, there is a short window of opportunity to do the work, said Lee, of April to May. He said he doesn’t expect opposition because rivers that provide good fish habitat also produce interesting chal-lenges for paddling. “Fishermen and kayakers hang out at the same places”, he said. “Plus there’s lots of river - 50 kilometres, so we’re talking about a small distance.” “We want to make the Crowsnest Pass a great recreation place that’s got it all,” said Lee.

High winds continue to play havoc on Highway 22 flipping over vehicles as they travel through this busy north-south corridor. On Jan. 12 two semi-tractor trailers rolled over including a driver from Abbotsford who was transported to hospital in Pincher Creek. The next day, a northbound vehicle was blown off the road when a wind gust caught the side of the trailer. The 37-year-old driver from Ontario was not injured.

Building inspectorprovides service to the Pass

Marvelling at the strange twists of fate, the new municipal building in-spector is excited to call Crowsnest Pass his home. Born in Calgary and grow-ing up in Kelowna, John Hawkins never dreamed he end up liv-ing and working in his parent’s former town. His father moved to the commu-nity to play hockey with the Pass Red Devils, a Junior A hockey team in the early 1970’s, where he met his wife and began a family. Hawkins re-members recreating as a child at his grand-parent’s Corbin cab-in and his aunt and uncle’s cabin at Lake Koocanusa, Montana. “When I was looking, I found a posting on Alberta Municipal Jobs and just thought this was the perfect place to come,” he said. “It’s got the mountains and all the outdoor stuff I like. My family and I enjoy the outdoors, camping, quadding, mountain biking.” Hawkins lived in several communi-ties in B.C., Alberta and Australia where he worked in carpen-try, he said, and obtained his Red Seal Carpentry ticket in Kelowna. He will be taking courses online to become fully registered in Alberta, he said, at which time Parks Enterprises Ltd. will no lon-ger be contracted to the mu-nicipality. “Once I get regis-tered, then basically I’ll be the building inspector for the municipality and when-
ever you pull a permit, I’ll be working with the [devel-opment officer] and then inspecting any permits for construction, new or reno-vations,” said Hawkins. On-site inspec-tions are required at differ-
ent phases of building, he explained, such as once the footings are in place, after the foundation is poured, followed by a framing in-spection, an insulation in-spection, and finally an oc-cupancy inspection when all safety components are in place. “It’s quite in-volved,” said Hawkins. “I could be out on a new resi-dential home build four to
five times.” He said municipal bylaws and building safety codes dictate requirements but the onus is on the home-owner to notify the munici-pality where they are in the building process.
“The permit won’t get closed until you call me in and if you never call me in for a final, then you’ll always have an open permit,” said Hawkins. Development per-mits expire after one year while building permits ex-pire after 90 days. After expiration, they have to be renewed which is an addi-tional expense, he added. “We’re not investi-
gators, we’re here to help the community adhere to proper building standards. We will do due diligence and notify people that their permits are about to expire but... they have to be responsible,” said Hawkins.
“You want to keep your permits up to date and then the pro-cess is just a lot easier.” Having a build-ing inspector in the Crowsnest Pass will be beneficial to the community time-wise, Hawkins said, because the contractor now only visits the Pass weekly, potentially slowing down a build. Another benefit will be having a consistent inspector, he added, because he will get to know builders’ plans and issues. “Having one per-son, it’s a lot more transferrable through the whole process,” Hawkins said. The municipality has a backlog of per-mits that he’ll have to work through, he said, but when he’s not doing inspecting, Hawkins will trans-fer over to municipal maintenance. The building in-spector’s role is to
serve the community, said Hawkins, and act as a resource for build-ers and homeowners. “I like to be part
of the building process and help people,” he added. Hawkins is married with two children and one on the way at the end of Jan-uary. “It was a really good opportunity and I was pleased to come to a place that I could see myself liv-ing in,” he said. “I came for the opportunity, for the job, but also because I liked the area,” said Hawkins.
New municipal building inspector, John Hawkins, will be based in the Crowsnest Pass and will be a resource for builders and homeowners.

First let me confess: I’m a huge Neil Young fan. Except for his 80’s grunge period, I’ve always loved his music and the man behind it was imma-terial. Whether with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, or Crazy Horse, his music resonated deeply and socio-political songs like Ohio, Southern Man and Alabama, only height-ened my addiction. Coming out strongly with a viewpoint, often in opposition to the mainstream, isn’t new to Young - he has a long history of activism and has fear-lessly heralded his stance since the beginning of his career. Second confession: As a good Albertan, I worked for over 10 years in the oil patch and that same company employs my husband today. So joining the fray, here’s my rant on the Neil Young-Fort MacMurray debacle. Although I find the Hiroshima comparison somewhat offen-sive, I’ve never been to Fort Mac so haven’t seen it with my own eyes. I can only base my thoughts on what I’m told by those who have or on what I’ve read. Like so many other facets of modern society, we’ve come a long way, including the extraction of oil from the earth. Certainly those companies involved in this exercise have instituted many pro-grams to reclaim soil, safeguard birds, and so on. And yet… Is it possible to have industrial de-velopment on such a massive scale as to leave no footprint, to unequivocally protect the air, water and ground from its extraction and processing? Logic would tell us no. Have oil companies come a long way towards institution of greener practices? Absolutely. Have they eliminated all long-term hazards to those working and living nearby? It’s hard to believe the answer is yes. And yet that’s what Young’s detractors say. He’s misinformed, he’s self-serving, he’s exaggerating. Do I agree with everything Neil Young said? No, but I believe he absolutely has the right to say it. Why can’t we have a public dispassionate con-versation about the subject? Why must we vilify those who disagree with us? I listened to Young’s interview with CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi. Part of his message was to generate consciousness about what we’re doing and our need to look at alternative sources of energy. This is the take-away I believe is most important and for that, I thank Young for his courage to start the discussion. If part of Mr. Young’s goal was to foster debate, success is undoubtedly his.

Plaque program proceedsBy Crowsnest Heritage
InitiativeSubmitted
Heritage plaques that appeared on Blairmore’s main street buildings a few years ago will soon be appearing on commer-cial buildings in Coleman, Frank and Hillcrest. Up-dated versions of the build-ing plaques currently on display in Bellevue will fol-low next year. Each plaque includes a short history of the building and a historic photograph. As with Blairmore, tem-porary paper versions of the plaques will be ‘test-driven’ in the business windows of Coleman, Frank and Hillcrest
so that the public can suggest corrections and improvements. Comments may be emailed to the Crows-nest Heritage Initiative at [email protected]. After obtaining building-owner per-mission, the perma-nent signs will be at-tached to building exteriors this spring, in time for the 100th an-niversary of the Hill-crest Mine Disaster in June. The heritage building plaque program is part of a wider heritage
signs program intended to increase awareness of the historical signifi-cance of the Crowsnest Pass, for both visitors and residents. These plaques and signs can be read alone, or combined into heri-tage walking and driving tours which are mapped in brochures available at key points in the com-munity. Historical research for all signs and plaques is conducted by local vol-unteers. Panels are fab-ricated by an outdoor
display specialist com-pany, and installation is
done by volunteers, or a combination of volunteers and contractors where sign structures are required. The program is a project of the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative, and is princi-pally funded by Teck and by provincial and federal grant money. Member-groups of the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative believe that our heritage is an im-portant component for in-creased tourism, as well as a source of local pride. Information on the Crowsnest Heritage Initia-tive and on Crowsnest Pass history can be found at www.crowsnestheritage.ca.
New heritage plaques will be installed in Coleman, Frank and Hill-crest.

Trails have been de-veloped through the volunteer efforts of the Crowsnest Pass Cross Country Ski Associa-tion and are groomed by the Municipality. They were recently awarded the Ski Area of the Year by the provincial sport governing body, Cross Country Alberta. Skiers will choose to ski a 1.5km, 9km or 18km course. Medals will be awarded to the top young skiers in the 1.5 km distance and the top overall male and fe-male skiers in the longer distances. New this year is the addition of Jackrabbit fun races. In partner-ship with the Boys and Girls Club, the Ski As-sociation is working with 20 young skiers in a learn to ski program known as the Jackrabbit Program. These skiers have been encouraged to come out and partici-pate in this fun celebra-tion of the sport. A light lunch will be available for skiers, vol-unteers and spectators. The first month of the year is upon us once again, and the newly grown crowds at the local gym are in abundance. Con-gratulations on your will power. To assist you, I want to provide you with cooking method options that will hopefully help to add variety and keep some excitement in your meals. Let’s be honest, how many more dry pieces of toast, boiled eggs, or plain salads can you stomach before you lose your faith to the burger and fries that haunt you in your dreams?
Included in the top 10 most common New Year’s resolutions are lose weight, exercise more, and eat better. Although I am not a Dietician or a Personal Fitness Trainer, I can assist you in the kitchen.
Having a backyard barbeque is a popular event during the sum-mer, but year-round it provides a great low fat cooking method. Grilled meats, fish, and even vegetables always taste great because of the distinctive flame-licked smoky taste and caramelization. Very little fat needs to be added to items to keep them from stick-ing and there are no pots & pans to clean up. A low-fat cooking spray applied to the cold grill before igniting can also ease the cooking process and help to make those wonderful grill-marks. One of the few health concerns is the amount of carcinogens when food is over-cooked over a flame. The blackened bits ideally need to be removed if this is a concern for you.
Poaching in a savory broth or wine is a great way to not only infuse flavour but also keep your chicken or fish extremely moist. I find that poaching is very misunderstood. It is not the same as “boiling”. One of the last things I would want to eat is boiled chicken. The culinary definition of poaching is to cook gently in water or other liquid that is hot but not actually bubbling, about 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Wine poached salmon with a dollop of seasoned no-fat sour cream is amazingly delicious and incredibly moist.
Braising meats is another way of reducing the amount of fat in your meal. “Braising” is the process of quickly browning your meat for flavour and then cooking covered with a small amount of liquid. Inexpensive tougher cuts of meat that are cooked us-ing this “moist heat” method over a longer cooking time will be-come very tender. The liquid (wine, broth, beer, juice, etc.) helps to break down the unpalatable connective tissue found in these bargain provisions at the butcher’s counter. However, braising also works with leaner products like skinless chicken breast or pork loin - just don’t cook them as long.
We have only scratched the culinary surface, but hopefully this will aid you in bringing some enthusiasm to your kitchen adven-tures. Don’t forget about the abundant number of no-fat bottled dressings in your local supermarket. They are not only ideal on salads, but also use them as marinades, dips, and sauces with cer-tain dishes to help add variety quickly... just remember “no fat” doesn’t mean “no calorie” - always read the nutrition labels.

Banner year forChristmas bird count
By Denise Coccioloni-AmattoSubmitted
Greetings, all of you “closet bird watchers” out there! We held our annual Christmas Bird Count again last month on Dec. 27. This year we were very pleased to have a few more people out and it was a lovely day, other than the wind. When we count birds, we tally the birds only on the specified count day, but we can also in-clude any birds seen three days prior to and three days following that date. We had a record number of species for this time of year, due partly to a record number of participants helping out, but due
also to the weather, w h i c h had been a bit un-seasonal. Whenever we have s e v e r e w e a t h e r we can a l m o s t certainly count on s e e i n g something out of the ordinary. One of
our worst challenges, as all bird-ers know, is the “plastic bag bird” seen clinging pathetically to barbed wire fences. Once we get our eyes retrained not to mistake these for our feathered friends, it makes the day a less stressful one. The bird that was most numer-ous this year was the common goldeneye duck at 104 but we also had two very unusual spe-cies. One was a white-throated spar-row who seems to have forgot-ten to head south, and, if you can imagine, four yellow-headed blackbirds! There must be come sort of counseling for these mis-guided ones! We also had nine northern
shovelers, that are a new species for our Christmas count though we do see them here in summer. There were two bald eagles as well as a golden eagle to show that the raptors were also repre-sented. There were the usual culprits such as black-capped and moun-tain chickadees as well as blue jays, wild turkeys and Clark’s nutcrackers. By the end of Janu-ary we should have the informa-tion entered at crowsnestconser-vation.ca so you can have all the information available. Participants who joined us that day came from Calgary, Bea-ver Mines and the North Bur-mis area, as well as residents of Crowsnest Pass. At the end of our day that began at 8 a.m., we met at a local restaurant where we enjoyed swapping stories of who saw what where and enjoy-ing the camaraderie of another great day outdoors. If you are interested in being a feeder watcher or coming out with us next year, please contact Merilyn at [email protected]. Also, if anyone would be inter-ested in learning how to identify birds, we would love to have you come out and join us. That is the best way to learn…get out into nature and learn what we have around us.

By Joni MacFarlaneEditor Nominated for four Oscars (Best Picture, Lead Actress, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay) and three Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture-Drama, Best Performance by an Actress, and Best Screenplay-Motion Picture), critically acclaimed “Philomena” opens Monday Night at the Mov-ies’ winter season. Recently celebrating her 79th birthday, perennial favourite Dame Judi Dench gives a note-perfect performance as a woman pursuing a son given up for adop-tion years ago. It’s a compelling performance of deep emotion that deftly tugs the heartstrings without resort-ing to emotional manipulation or cloying sentiment. Based on a true story, Philom-ena also stars Steve Coogan as the world-weary BBC journal-ist Martin Sexsmith. He initially scoffs at the suggestion to write about the matriarch and her or-deal, but the tender and unex-pectedly touching relationship that forms provides an uplifting film as the pair search for answers from Ireland to the U.S.A. Director Stephen Frear’s deft touch and Coogan’s beautiful script provide a film rife with
earthy humour, as when the much-abused heroine relives the ecstasy of her first sexual experi-ence. As a teenager in 1952 Ireland, Philomena is forced to give up her baby to the sisters at Roscrea Abbey. Clinging to her faith, she tells the hard-bitten newsman, that she thinks of her son every-day and wants to know if he does the same. Revealing some of the dark-est deeds of the Catholic church, Philomena also celebrates the power of hope to heal old wounds and reminds us of our greatest virtue: forgiveness. Philomena is playing on Mon-day, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fox Theatre in Pincher Creek.Monday Night at the Movies is part of the Toronto International Film Festival Circuit and is pre-sented by the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek. Other movies in the upcoming winter series include Dallas Buy-ers Club, Inside Llewyn Davis, Mandela: Long Walk to Free-dom, Finding Vivian Maier, and The Lunchbox. Packages for all six films in the series are available for $45, or packages for any three for $25. Tickets are also sold individually at the door for $10. See you at the movies!

(MCC) Making home improve-ments doesn’t have to mean com-promising environmental ideals in the process. There are numer-ous jobs that a person can do that fit with a green lifestyle. While these improvements help protect the planet, they’ll also help keep a few extra dollars in your wallet. 1. Conserve water. Turn off the tap between brush-ing teeth or rinsing off dishes. Better yet, install low-flow faucets, shower-heads and toilets that reduce the con-sumption of water in the household. 2. Motion detec-tion: Motion-de-tector lights can be installed in differ-ent rooms of the home and outdoors. Lights will automat-ically turn on and off depending on the activity in the area, reducing the chanc-es of a light being left on inadver-tently and wasting money and energy. 3. Solar panels: You may have been toying with the idea of solar panels for years. They can be installed on the roof or in the yard to power various components of the household, like lights during a traditional power outage or the swimming pool filter. Today it is possible to buy used solar panels, many of which still have a lot of life left to them and are consider-ably cheaper than new ones. 4. Aluminum-clad storm door: Insulate the entryway of your home with a storm door that will buffer against harsh weather conditions. While you’re creat-ing a more air-tight space, caulk around windows and doors.
5. Replace air filters. Your HVAC system likely has filters inside that trap dirt and contami-nants. Replacing the filters leads to cleaner indoor air and helps the unit run more efficiently. 6. Power strips: Stock up on power strips and plug all of your peripherals and computer equip-ment into these strips. This way
when you want to power down everything completely, you sim-ply turn off the power button on the strip. This ensures no de-vices are drawing power even in the off position, which many do. 7. Install fans. Fans aren’t just useful in the summer. In the winter, the blades can be set to rotate in the opposite direction and help draw warm air into the room, heating more efficiently. 8. Rainwater barrels: Set up rainwater barrels at the down-spouts of your home’s gutter system. These barrels collect
water that can be used to water indoor and outdoor plants, or even wash the car. Some fea-ture a spigot to which you can directly connect a garden hose. 9. Plant trees.Trees are good for the environment in many ways, producing necessary oxygen for life and offering food and living areas for wildlife. Trees can also
shade a home during the warm weather, helping reduce en-ergy consumption. 10. Glass fire-place doors: In-stall glass fireplace doors, which are safer than fireplace screens. They’ll also help protect against heat loss up the chimney when there isn’t a fire lit. 11. Buy a solar cov-er. Warm up your spa all season long with a solar cover, which helps keep debris out of the wa-ter, too. Solar cov-ers reduce the need to fire up the heater to warm the water. 12. Dog waste composter: Create a method to safely dispose of dog waste without having to toss it in plastic
bags in the trash. There are de-vices that can be buried into the ground to serve as a dog waste receptacle. Or you can make one of your own by placing a container with a lid that seals on top but has an open bottom. Sprinkle a natural bacteria sep-tic tank product, such as Rid-X(R), down the hole routinely and it will break down the waste and turn it into soil fertilizer. There are a variety of ways to go green with home improvements, whether extensive projects or small fixes.
Twelve greenhome improvements
(NC) Effective outdoor lighting can help significant-ly to reduce hazards such as slips and falls during the win-ter months. It can be done simply, but it’s a safety tip that is often forgotten. The first measures that come to mind are adequate window insulation, cleaning the heat-ing vents, wrapping delicate outdoor trees and salting our driveways to prepare for the ice. And yet, by improving the lighting outside you’re going to enhance both safety and beauty at the same time. There is a lot of light bulb variety, of course, so Rona experts are here to show us
how to choose the right lights and the best places to install them: Install adequate lighting in main walking areas. The driveway, front steps and porch are the main areas we use to access our home. Bright lights are therefore a must, and compact flores-cent lights (CFLs) are a good energy efficient option to in-crease safety in these high traffic areas. Consider motion activated lights. We don’t always re-member to turn on our out-door lights when we leave the house during the day and we often come home after dark
in the winter months. Mo-tion activated lights over your driveway, front porch and back entrance are a great way to ensure they turn on when you and your family come home. Any type of energy ef-ficient light bulb can be con-nected to a motion sensor. Use a timer to save on en-ergy consumption. To reduce your energy bill, use energy efficient lights such as CFLs or LEDs in conjunction with a timer. This will ensure your outdoor lights are turned on and off at the same time every day, and never be left on for long periods of time.

(NC) Remodeling the kitchen. When you decide to tackle this daunting undertaking, you want to do it right. And, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey by Houzz.com, 49 percent of homeowners plan to completely gut their existing kitchen and start with a clean state. Regardless of the scope of your project, if you’re itchin’ to update your kitchen, follow these five steps to design the space you’ve been dream-ing about. Step 1: Create a budget Before picking up a single tool or seeking contractor rec-ommendations from friends, it’s important to determine how much you’re willing to spend to achieve your ideal kitchen. Whether needing basic upgrades or a complete remodel, set-ting your budget will help to create a realistic plan from the start. There are a wide range of impactful updates to change the look of your space no matter what the price tag. Step 2: Think about what you need (and what you want)Take a step back and think about how you use the kitchen. Are you an avid baker and need more counter space for roll-ing out confections? Do you like to make homemade pizza, and the thought of a stone oven makes you drool? No matter
what your dream space looks like, there’s one area that every-one should update – the kitchen faucet. Because it sees so much use on a daily basis, think about ways to make tasks easier, like installing a new pulldown fau-cet. From preparing meals and washing dishes, to watering plants and filling pitchers, you’ll quickly notice the difference made by this simple update. For a contemporary look, try the new Moen Align or STō pulldown faucets. Both bring modern style and superior performance with a two-function pulldown spray wand that allows you to switch the water flow from aerated stream to spray with the push of a button. Step 3: Research and planSources for ideas and inspiration are infinite – especially on-line. Sites like Pinterest and Houzz provide endless eye candy and design concepts for your new kitchen space; Houzz can even provide recommendations of local professionals to con-tact. To visualize a few of the upgrades you’re considering – not to mention touch and feel them – visit a local kitchen showroom as they have a number of vignettes and “rooms” designed throughout. Magazine articles can also provide valuable how-to information and design advice. Just be sure
to save any favourite ideas in one place, making everything easily accessible when it’s time to get started. Step 4: Determine your approachWill you hire a pro or do most of the work yourself? If you’re going to change the layout or remove walls in the kitchen, it’s best to work with a professional contractor. Rewiring electri-cal or adding new light sources are also jobs best left to a certified electrician. You can find a number of profession-als online, where you can also read reviews from previous customers, and in some cases, view samples of their work. If you’re an avid DIYer, you may feel comfortable installing new cabinets, flooring and countertops. But there are certain projects, like the demo, painting and installation of a new faucet that anyone – and any skill level – can easily tackle. Step 5: Get to workIf you haven’t begun working on your kitchen project yet, you’re not alone; 68 percent of Houzz respondents haven’t started construction, either. But with the perfect plan and a list of updates to incorporate, it will be simple to create your dream kitchen space.

Itchin’ to update your kitchen
‘Let’s Talk Day’ springboard for Olympian’s ride into Pass
By Joni MacFarlaneEditor
In any given year, one in five Canadians experiences a men-tal health or addiction problem. Even with a regular prevalence in our society, the stigma con-tinues while access to services and resources remain limited. According to the Canadian Medical Association, only half of us would tell friends or co-workers that they have a family member with a mental illness compared to 72 per cent who would discuss a diagnosis of cancer. In an effort to lift the lid off the bottle that is mental health, Bell has set Jan. 28 as the fourth annual “Bell Let’s Talk Day” and invites Canadians to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. Bell donates five cents for ev-ery text sent and long distance
call made by Bell and Bell Aliant customers, every tweet using #BellLetsTalk, and ev-ery Facebook share of the Bell Let’s Talk Day image. Jan. 28 also serves as an intro-duction to an event in Crows-nest Pass featuring Olympic athlete Clara Hughes as she rides around Canada in support of mental health awareness. “Clara’s Big Ride” is a nation-al bicycle tour with Canada’s six-time Olympic cycling and speed-skating medallist Clara Hughes. As national spokesper-son for Bell’s Let’s Talk Mental Health initiatives, Clara invites people to take part in mental health conversations and shares her own story of mental health chal-lenges. As part of her 110-day, 12,000 kilome-
tre ride, residents surrounding Crowsnest Pass will have an op-portunity to meet Clara, hear her personal story and support the effort to break down stig-mas associated with mental ill-ness. Clara will ride into the Crows-nest Pass on May 28 and spend the evening engaging with the community. Inclusive events welcoming Clara, along with residents and visitors, are being planned by a volunteer committee including United Riders of Crowsnest, local community mental health organizations, and Crowsnest Consolidated High School.

From page 9... Local organizer, Val Breakenridge, who worked to bring the event to Crowsnest Pass, said she believes it’s an exciting opportunity for the re-gion. “Our committee is an enthusiastic and dedicated group of individuals
with a connection to mental health – either personally, or through the work we do, or both. We are all passionate about putting together a great event for Crowsnest Pass,” said Breaken-ridge. “Additionally, we’re finding the same enthusiasm within the commu-
nity. Everyone we’ve talked to as we’re building the program for Clara’s visit is 100% in
support of the event, wishing us well and committing to attend whatever it is! It really reinforces how many of us are touched by mental health aware-ness. We’re very optimistic that our CNP event will be outstanding and one not to be missed!” Watch The Crowsnest Pass Free Press for more information as details become available.
