Abbotsford lost one of its most influ-ential in March, with the tragic pass-ing of Abbotsford Parks & Recreation Manager, Mark Taylor.
Mark provided passionate and dynamic leadership in his role, managing a team of 300, and was always quick with a smile and hello for everyone. For 12 years Mark spearheaded projects and events that included Abbosford hosting the 2004 BC Summer Games and 2006 BC Senior Games.
Earlier this year, Mark was an integral part of the bid that won Abbotsford the 2016 BC Summer Games.
Other major projects under Mark’s leadership include renovation of Centennial Pool, improvements to the city’s trails system and expansion of the Discovery Trail; and the three Plan A projects.
S O P H I E S C H M I DTAt the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sophie Schmidt and team set out to defeat France in the Bronze medal game.
What ensued was an absurdly dramatic 1-0 victory, and Schmidt had a hand in Diana Matheson’s game-winning goal in injury time. It marked the completion of an emotional roller-coaster ride for the Canadian squad, coming as it did in the wake of a devastating 4-3 loss to the United States in the semi-finals .
Since becoming an Olympic medalist, Schmidt has committed her-self to as many public appearances as possible, including a special visit to her middle school “Colleen and Gordie Howe”.
“With skill, desire, commitment, and a little luck, you can achieve your dream,” she said.

Chief Constable Bob Rich has taken Abbotsford from the “Murder Capital of Canada” to a city we can all be proud to live in. Bob believes strongly in our community, and says, “APD is respon-sible for making Abbotsford safe. Each year we look at what needs to be fixed to make the community better. We then set measurable goals to deal with each issue. We have made some progress in the last few years to make Abbotsford safer. We call that a good start! We have more to do.”
Last Christmas, Bob and the APD received national attention for targeting criminals in Abbotsford with a “Christmas card” urging them to think twice about doing the wrong thing, ever again.

D I A N E D E LV E SPioneer Square, located on the cor-ner of Gladys and Essendene, is one of Abbotsford’s most unique developments, and is the latest in a string of successful developments being built right now by Diane and her team at Quantum Properties.
Construction is nearly complete on the 20,000 sq. ft., 3-storey commercial facility.
Diane’s comprehensive real estate market knowledge and extensive industry experi-

Diane has also contributed many volunteer hours within the Appraisal Institute of Canada as both Chairperson of the F.V. Chapter and as a member of various association committees. Diane believes in spreading a positive message to the City of Abbotsford via Twitter and posts good news on a daily basis!
E D FA S TThe Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006, and was re-elected in 2008 and 2011. He had previously served for two terms as an Abbotsford School Trustee and three terms as a member of Abbotsford City Council.
Ed’s role as Abbotsford’s MP is still a top priority, despite his international travel schedule. His office deals with local issues, including immigration, visas and pension concerns.
“One of the things I think Abbotsford residents probably should remember is that the work I do for Canada directly benefits Abbotsford, Fast said.” He thinks his constituents, for the most part, seem content with the work he is doing.

City of Abbotsford Manager George Murray has become deeply entrenched in operations since starting his position earlier this year.
Murray intends to provide leadership to each department and let them do their designated work. He said he is one part of a team that relies on the exchange of
information and expertise between employees.
“You can look from the outside of an organization and think you understand how decisions were made . . . but you truly don’t under-stand until you get inside.”
I’m an accountant, but I’d like to think I am going to spend just as much time working on systems, processes, governance and cul-ture,” he said.

Tuesday, April 16th began like any other day. Sixty-two year old Ron was getting ready for his day. He was looking forward to sitting down in his easy chair to watch “Let’s Make a Deal”. At the other end of town eighty-two year old John was getting ready for his weekly volunteer service of delivering Meals on Wheels. Ron was one of his scheduled stops. But John didn’t get an answer at Ron’s condo which was strange. After explaining why he was there to another owner in the building, she let John in.Something was very wrong. John knew Ron lived alone and didn’t get out much. He was determined to get in there and check in on him. Ron had suffered a major stroke just before John arrived. He was lying on the fl oor in his bedroom unable to communicate. Thanks to the quick thinking of another resident in the building and John’s patience, emergency responders arrived and rushed Ron to the hospital.Had it not been for John’s persistence in getting that meal delivered, it is doubtful that Ron would still be alive today. So what is the value of Meals on Wheels? Priceless.
What if ACS was gone tomorrow? What if all the 80+ programs, like Meals on Wheels, no longer existed?

Describe the way(s) your business has given back to the Abbotsford community. We support local artists through our annual Art in the Barn and provide numerous gift baskets and gift items for local fundraisers. We enjoy hosting visitors from all over the world because of our partnership with Abbotsford Tourism.
How do you feel you (or your business) have infl uenced Abbotsford, either in the past, the present, or the future? We would like to think that being active in apiculture and education, has heightened awareness of others to the challenges to the honey bee, the most effi cient pollinator. Without the honey bee, about 30% of the world food supply would be at risk. We are hopeful that people, who are working to reduce their carbon footprint, are also learning ways of living that will help protect the habitat of the honey bee.

How has your business changed or adapted in recent years? We know that people have choices available to them when it comes to accommodation or planning a meeting/event. Based on guest feedback, we continue to develop innovative ways to keep up with trends such as menu choices, sustainability initiatives and community participation. Also, we recognize that social media provides a very quick way for customer feedback and we are pleased to use these various platforms to further engage with our guests.
What is the most important rule when it comes to customer service? In the hospitality industry, we believe customer service is top priority. Our team is driven by our 3 keys to success. A warm welcome the moment a guest walks in the door with immediate eye contact, a friendly smile and addressing them by name. Guest satisfaction is our number one priority. Upon check-out, each guest is offered an invitation to return. We always look forward to welcoming them back to the Ramada Plaza & Conference Centre.

PAUL NARANGOwner
What attracted you to livingin Abbotsford?Growing up here, I love the feeling of being in both the city and the country at the same time. Abbotsford still has a small town feel even though it continues to have awesome growth, and I love that. It is a beautiful setting to raise our family in and we appreciate the cultural diversity and the strong roots in the Sikh community.
What is your most important rule for customer service? Our primary goal is to meet our customers’ needs and always provide a solution that best fi ts their interests. We have a ‘think outside the box’ approach and provide solutions that other stores often cannot. We are also big on empowering our staff so they can make decisions on the spot instead of having to get in touch with management.
What does the future hold for your business? We hope to continue opening Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile locations throughout the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland to increase our footprint as a established dealer in the wireless industry. We also hope to continue giving back to our community as we have over the past few years.
How has your business given back to the Abbotsford community? Most of our charitable commitments have been geared towards children and youth. For the last 6 years we’ve been involved with the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) helping to raise funds for research aimed at children living with Type 1 Diabetes. We host an annual fundraiser in Abbotsford where we’re able to raise thousands of dollars for this cause and we are very proud of this event. Smart Wireless also sponsored 2 soccer teams this year through the Abbotsford United Soccer Club. We’ve been supporting the Kids Help Line for several years now which helps kids across Canada get access to anonymous and confi dential professional counselling. This year we were able to also make a signifi cant contribution to the Abbotsford Food Bank as well as the Fraser Valley Hindu Cultural Society. Smart Wireless is also planning to take part in this year’s Vasakhi celebrations.
Smart Wireless is a young, community-minded company offering the best possible products and services fromBell and Virgin Mobile.
