President’s Message On the occasion of the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Campbell River, I am pleased to have the honour and privilege to serve as the Club’s President for 2015/2016. In particular, it is an honour to carry on the “Service Above Self” tradition that was characteristic of the founding members of our Club back in 1946. The current members of our Club and, in fact, the whole of our Campbell River community, owe much gratitude to the
19 original members who, under the guidance of first President Dr. Ken Craig, established the Rotary Club of Campbell River in 1946.
Service is a key part of Rotary and this is clearly evident in the Rotary Club of Campbell River. Over the past 70 years, Rotarians have contributed greatly to the
development of our community, making Campbell River one of the best places to live in Canada! Rotary projects in our community are numerous and the most recent projects include our new Suspension Bridge at Elk Falls Provincial Park, the Splash Park at Willow Point Park, and the Sea Walk. These projects add to the earlier list of projects which include Rotary Beach Park, Our Place, the Discovery Fishing Pier, Cari’s Infant and Toddler Centre, and many others. The Rotary Club of Campbell River is well known for the physical Rotary projects in our community, but our Club has other dimensions. Rotarians raise funds for local charitable causes and we support other benevolent organizations in our community. Our Club has a strong emphasis on supporting youth and we are proud to sponsor the Interact Club at Carihi and, on an international scale, we participate in the Rotary Student Exchange program. Also at the international level, our Club participates in humanitarian efforts to assist communities in developing countries. For example, our Club has worked to provide clean water to communities in Kenya and Honduras. Last, the Rotary Club of Campbell River continues to work with other Rotary Clubs in the world in an effort to eradicate polio from the globe. Rotary is a wonderful service organization and the members of the Rotary Club of Campbell River are to be congratulated for exemplifying the true principles and values of Rotary over the past 70 years. I thank the current members of our Club for allowing me to serve as President during our Club’s 70th Anniversary – it has been a highlight of my life. The Rotary Club of Campbell River will continue to provide service to our community and to the international community and we can look forward to many more Rotary achievements over the next 70 years!

Fundraising is an important part of Rotary. The members of the Rotary Club of Campbell River generate about $100,000 annually in local funds for community service. Often these funds are matched by grants and volunteer leadership and labour. Monies raised directly from community supported Rotary functions are put into the local community. Rotary makes a diff erence, we enjoy it, and we appreciate the tremendous support and respect from the community.

Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process. Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs. Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:• Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community• Are fl exible and willing to try new things• Are open to cultural diff erences• Can serve as an ambassador for their own country. If you are an interested youth, contact Cathy Kaardal, (Rotary Youth Exchange Offi cer) at 250-202-2550 to learn more about the types of programs off ered, and specifi c application process required. Because the selection and orientation process can be lengthy, we suggest you apply 6 –12 months before you plan to leave.
