A variety of active services are available to seniors at Mission Community Services Society. Light housekeeping, Meals on Wheels, gardening support and income tax filing are just a start to ease some of the challenges that can arise.

Mission Better at Home program provides non-medical services to assist seniors with simple daily tasks “so they can continue to live independently in their own homes and stay connected to their communities,” said Debbie Doust of MCSS who works with seniors in Mission.

Better at Home is funded by the province of B.C. and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

Fees for Mission Better at Home services are determined on a sliding scale based on the senior’s household income.

The program offers non-medical services to seniors who are:

· 55 years of age or older· Residents of Mission· Living in their own homeServices available through Mission

Better at Home include:· Light Housekeeping· Transportation to Medical Appointments

· Grocery Shopping

· Friendly Visitor/Caller· Gardening (beginning in May).To find out more about the

Transportation to medical appointments are available to seniors. Screened volunteers provide transportation services from Mission to as far east as Chilliwack and as far west as Vancouver.

MCSS Lunch with a Bunch serves up hot food and good times on the third Thursday of every month at Carrington House, and occasionally diners are joined by a guest speaker or live entertainment.

Nothing brings back fond memories and stirs up emotions like music. Listening to an old favourite can be soothing, especially if you are not a fan of modern music.

Hearing a classic song is like visiting with an old friend – it brings you back to a time when life seemed simpler.

Mission music fans can hear some old favourites when the musical group Byrd Dawg and the Vintage Electric Band come to town on April 8 to present its Old Friends Tour.

The group presents a tribute to two iconic musical duos, the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. The show will take place at the Clarke Theatre beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at OnTourTickets.com or at the Mission City Record office.

Byrd Dawg features Joel Dietrich and Wayne Rempel as lead vocalists. They both grew up listening to those amazing harmonies and lyrics painting vivid pictures. Playing together in bands for several years they discovered their mutual love for singing and harmonizing. They read about Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and many other artists saying they were influenced by Phil and Don Everly.

But how did the duo begin performing?

“A few years ago we were backing an Elvis tribute artist and doing a lot of back up singing. We found out at that time that our voices had a nice blend and we thought some Everly Brothers songs might be a nice fit to go with the Elvis. After that we

continued learning more of the Everly’s songs and have developed it into the tribute it is now,” said Rempel.

Dietrich credits Rempel with coming up with the idea to perform Everly Brothers tunes, while he came up with Simon and Garfunkel.

“I think I mentioned that Simon and Garfunkel were heavily influenced by the Everly’s and maybe we should try some of their songs too. It’s just a great fit,” said Dietrich.

Both singers agree that their fans come out to hear great classics and take a quick trip down memory lane.

“I think our show will most definitely take people back. The songs we’ve selected for this tour should all be pretty well known. With the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel it’s hard to pick a song that isn’t known,” said Dietrich.

Rempel said some of the greatest bands in history were influenced by the work of the Everly Brothers.

“Artists from the Beatles to Queen. John and Paul even called themselves ‘the English Everly Brothers’ early on. Rolling Stone magazine recently ranked Phil and Don as the greatest musical duo of all time,” said Rempel.

The duo said the Mission show will leave the audience smiling cheering, and singing along.

“The show has been a lot of fun to put together. I love every song we perform. If you don’t leave the theatre singing or humming one of the tunes you better check your pulse,” said Rempel.

If you plan to replace your kitchen or bathroom taps, lever-type or control-arm-type faucet handles are easier to use. Install grab bars in the bathroom, make sure to install them solidly on the wall studs. A hand-held shower head is easier to use when

using a bath seat. Door locks and latches should have large, easily manipulated knobs or levers.

What was I thinking?

Have you misplaced or forgotten something and begun to wonder if you are having memory loss problems?

There is no doubt that our brains change as we age and with this also comes changes in our memory systems.

Memory loss is a great concern

for many seniors; however, it’s not an inevitable part of aging. We all have memory lapses from time to time. Misplacing keys, forgetting an acquaintance’s name, forgetting what your spouse asked you to pick up on the way home, are common experiences for people of all ages.

It’s important to understand what changes in memory are associated with normal aging and those that are more serious and require medical attention.

Generally speaking, our memory peaks in our 20s and then begins to gradually decline. However, research shows that some types of memory decline, various stay constant, and with training, others can even improve as we age.

Memory lapses and declines in certain memory systems are a normal part of aging. In contrast, memory changes that negatively affect one’s daily functioning are much more serious. These are typically associated with memory loss and not part of normal aging.

Some examples are:Not being able to find your way

home while in your neighbourhood;Forgetting how to do everyday things; When memory problems affect your

daily living, it may be time to seek out

professional help. Likewise, you may also notice changes in friends and family members that require further medical assistance. HealthLink BC is as close as your phone or the web any time of the day or night, every day of the year. Call 811 toll-free in B.C. or for the hearing-impaired, call 711.

Have you had “the talk” with your parents yet?If you haven’t, and

your parents are over 75, now is probably a really good time. What I’m speaking of is their plans for implementing and paying for the cost of in home care, should one or both of them need extra support at home. The need for care can happen very quickly, due to a fall, an illness, or a sudden flare up of a chronic condition. It’s a fact that 1 in 3 seniors will experience a fall this year. Our provincial health

care system provides an excellent level

of emergency help through your local hospital. However, where we see gaps is when a loved one leaves the hospital. What was it that caused the emergency in the first place? Has anything changed at home to prevent it from happening again? Who is going to help with the day to day activities like grocery shopping, cleaning, cooking and laundry? Often, this falls on the family (aka – you, the busiest person on the planet). If no one is there to help, they often end up back

in the hospital over and over again. The vast majority

of seniors want to stay in their home as long as possible. It’s also a fact that people recover better at home. And people who are monitored by a health professional in their first week home from leaving the hospital, have a significantly reduced chance of getting sick again and returning. If that’s the case, planning ahead for home care is the only way to make that happen. I know this from personal

experience. Around 2003, before I ever knew about Nurse Next Door, my mom was diagnosed with Dementia. I had no idea what that meant at the time, but over the next 2 years, I witnessed a decline in her capabilities that landed her in the local hospital every few months. She was fiercely independent, and refused help, but finally it reached the point where the doctors would no longer allow her to return home without 24/7 supervision. My mom had

expressed over and over to my brother and me that she did NOT want to move from her home of 40+ years, and she did not want to go to a nursing home. So I set about making that happen without knowing how much it would cost, or how to pay for it. I consulted a company like Nurse Next Door, plus legal help, as well as a Financial Planner with experience working with seniors. Together we set

up 24/7 Care Service, and brought mom home. Although she was on a small disability pension and cash poor, she did own her house that was paid for many years ago. Without selling, we were able to access the equity in her home which we used to pay for the care she so desperately needed. Because we did not

have “the talk” before she was deemed incapable of decision making, she paid a steep legal bill in order for me to assist her with her financial decision making. It is much better (andmuch cheaper) to do this while loved ones are still 100% capable. You may also want to remind them to review their life insurance, update wills, and create a Power Of Attorney for the future. I urge you to start

talking with your parents about their wishes, so that if and when they need your help, you’ve got a plan. Bring in professionals to talk about their specific situation and

make sure they have information about home care costs, what is actually provided by the government, how long it takes to access government care, setting up a mortgage or line of credit, etc... Planning for it now is what will allow them to stay in their own home as long as possible. If you think these decisions are tough to make now, waiting will only make them harder. I’m here to say it

absolutely IS possible for people to stay in the home they love and raised a family in, with the support and care that they need, and still provide a healthy inheritance for the remaining family members (I know from experience!) In order for that to happen, you must have a good plan in place so start today!

“Helping People, Changing Lives, Building Community”

Author tells a novel taleKevin MILLS

Walter Schmur loves to write. It’s not an attribute

you would expect in a man who spent most of his life working with numbers rather than words.

The 75-year-old, long-time Mission resident and former accountant, has penned a fantasy/sports/golf novel called Strike While the Iron’s Hot.He began the project

in March of 2014 and finished a year later.

“I had it printed in May of 2015. I had 50 copies published. Paid for it myself,” said Schmur. The aspiring author is

now promoting his book around the Fraser valley and across the world.Schmur travelled to

England on vacation

and decided to bring some copies of his new novel with him. He only left a few, but he also went on a cruise and left two copies in the ship’s library.“It’s probably still

sailing around different parts of the world.”He has given away

several books to friends and family and sold about 20 copies as well.“I’m getting back some

of my money, but it’s never enough,” he joked.Schmur decided to

write about golf because of his familiarity with the sport.“I’ve been a fan and a

player, I’m not a great golfer, but I can play the game.”He said the novel is

a Fraser valley story, taking place on the Cheam Mountain Golf Course in Chilliwack.Schmur was inspired

by the corn fields adjacent to the golf course and had an image in his mind of a boy standing in a corn field watching people play golf. “He gets interested in

golf and gets inspired by the late legendary Canadian golfer Moe Norman and is given this gift – and this is

where the fantasy part comes in – given a gift from Moe Norman from the beyond.”So far he has received

plenty of positive feedback. So much so that he’s debating with himself whether to print more copies of the book, or maybe write another one.

Seventy-five year old Mission resident Walter Schmur has penned a new fantasy sports novel called Strike While the Iron’s Hot.
