A layer assessment choicesListen to 2 jazz works, critically analyse these works by comparing and contrasting in terms of their style.

Listen to 2 jazz works and state if they are of the jazz genre. Why or why not, discussing relevant techniques used.

Listen to one jazz work, research and write a brief description of the band/individual and discuss the way in which one concept of music is used (ie Pitch).

Complete a short test. The test will comprise of played excerpts where students are to identify the works title, composer and provide one sentence conveying an interesting fact about the work.

Write a short definition of improvisation and give an example (ie music track and video) that demonstrates improvisation.

This contract distinguishes the assessment guidelines and how each student will be assessed. Each assessment is graded by a set number of points.These points are requirements set by the teacher for students to fulfil. Each student must:

Complete a minimum of 60 points by the end of the first two weeksThese 60 points must include:

One A-layer assessmentOne B-layer assessmentOne C-layer assessment

However, each assessment must come from either:Performing objectiveListening objective or Composing objective

E.g. Student A completes:A-layer assessment from Performing objective worth 30 pointsB-layer assessment from Listening objective worth 20 pointsC-layer assessment from Composing objective worth 10 points

Totalling 60 points and the three objectives (performing, listening and composing)After the end of the course, a student must have completed a least 60 points from each objective area, totalling a minimum of 180 points.

If a student completes more than the required amount of points (e.g. 190), their mark will still only be out of the minimum of 180 points.

Short Essay – 40 points

Syllabus Outcome - 4.4 Demonstrates an understanding of musical concepts through exploring, experimenting, improvising, organising, arranging and composing.

InstructionsCompose a short essay discussing:

Why jazz music is not mainstream in today’s society? Make reference to jazz in its chronology, construction and composition.

This should include a short reference to what jazz is, how it is composed and therefore, why it is not mainstream in today’s society. Within this, include your own opinion on why this is so.
