Dear Fellow Alumni:

W E W EL CO M ED H U N D R ED S O F A LU M N I A N D G U E S T S B AC K T O C A M P U S F O R

Reunion Weekend in April, reuniting friends and connecting new ones. As highlighted in this issue, we presented Alumni Association Awards which recognized remarkable individuals who are making significant contributions to medicine, the College and humankind.

I was proud to represent all alumni at the Graduate Studies Program’s 39th annual Research and Awards Day in April and at Medical Student Awards Day and Commencement in May. It was humbling to lead the Class of 2018 as they recited the Physician’s Oath and pledged to dedicate their lives to the service of humanity.

Commencement is the celebration of new beginnings and, like me, you probably felt a combination of joy, relief, pride and maybe even a healthy dose of fear about your professional future.

No matter where you are in your professional or personal journey, I remind you of the importance of your roots at Albany Medical College. Alumni connections are a powerful network and I encourage you to sign up for our online directory so that you can keep in touch with classmates. We never share personal information and the platform is only accessible to alumni. We have also begun regularly updating news to the Alumni Association Facebook page.

If you have not made a gift in 2018, I hope you will join us in welcoming the Class of 2022 by giving back in support of the difficult but rewarding work they will be facing in the years to come.

The Unit, given the name—Albany Hospital and Medical School Base Unit No. 33—had several serving College faculty members and alumni, including Dr. Arthur W. Elting, who was named head of the Unit. Base Unit No. 33 also included 24 physicians and surgeons carefully selected from a large applicant pool. Additionally, 152 enlisted men, 65 nurses and six civilians were chosen to represent all essential skills needed. Medical students were not allowed to enlist but were encouraged to continue their study of medicine to fill in future physician gaps created by the war. The Base Unit arrived at Portsmouth, England, in May 1918 with the expectation of serving in France.

Famed physician, Sir William Osler wrote of the unit: “Elting made things hum at first, and Corning (Dr. Erastus) was an unqualified success as his successor. The clinical and pathological laboratory was one of the very best I have ever seen, and the X-ray outfit was extraordinarily good.”

Medical Education (LCME) accreditation site visit team for several days of on-site interviewing and fact finding. College leadership, faculty and medical student leaders spent countless hours preparing for the visit and submitted a formal 300-page report to the LCME in advance of the team’s arrival. The report details how Albany Medical College meets the many educational standards and corresponding elements required of medical schools to achieve and maintain accreditation.

During the visit, the LCME team met with more than 100 senior College and Center leaders, as well as junior faculty, residents, students and department chairs. The team found our academic environment collegial and our students bright, engaging and genuinely enjoying their educational journey at AMC. We expect that the LCME will be making several recommendations that will serve as the impetus to improve our educational offerings and the learning milieu, and also about the importance of securing scholarship funding and resources to help reduce student debt burden.

Scholarship is one area where we can make a difference. Alumni giving makes a tremendous impact on our scholarship offerings, and I am grateful to those of you who contribute to the College. I have set a personal goal in 2018 to increase alumni giving to 20 percent. I encourage those of you who have not yet made a gift to consider the many options for giving back, even at less significant levels. Your support does lessen the financial burden students face.

Match Day in March was a very special event, complete with balloons which revealed match information, and a successful social media campaign promoting the success of our students and encouraging alumni to participate. Many students grapple with the decision of whether to specialize, a stressful decision with significant financial, philosophical and career implications. Fifty-three percent of this year’s class will enter primary care specialties, including family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. Sixty-three students, or 43 percent, were matched to programs in New York State, and 17 students will remain at Albany Medical Center.

We were happy to welcome alumni back in April for a successful Reunion Weekend, and in May we celebrated the Class of 2018 at Commencement events. I am sure you will enjoy reading about the highlights in these pages.

I extend my sincere personal thanks for your continued interest in the College and support of our work.

Best Wishes,Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84

“I’d become very invested in research that promised to improve the outcomes of high-risk infants, and I wanted to see what issues they were facing once they left the hospital,” she explained.

After getting the green light on the project, she was surprised when one issue came up again and again.

“So many of these children were coming in with language delays. I would send them for a hearing assessment and sure enough, they had hearing loss related to their prematurity,” she said.

Dr. Vohr wanted to have the ability to identify hearing loss while infants were still in the NICU so treatment could start early; however, there were no audiologists available at the hospital. Unfazed, she petitioned it to purchase audiology equipment and learned how to conduct hearing assessments herself and then taught the nurses. They tested newborns for the next several years, ensuring those with hearing loss received diagnosis and therapy.

In 1988, when the United States Department of Education announced funding for a project to study the feasibility of a newborn hearing program, Dr. Vohr and her team were immediately on board and applied for funds.

“We were one of the only facilities in the country already performing hearing screenings, so we were well positioned,” Dr. Vohr explained.

Her work spearheaded the Rhode Island’s Hearing Assessment Program and as a result, Rhode Island was the first state to achieve universal newborn hearing screening. This was followed by a National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference that recommended newborn hearing screening for all newborns in the United States. Today, more than 99 percent of infants in the U.S. have their hearing screened at birth, and infants with hearing loss now have significantly improved outcomes.

For this profound professional achievement and her pioneering work as a clinician and research-er dedicated to improving the lives of high-risk premature infants and infants with hearing loss, Dr. Vohr was the recipient of the Albany Medical College Alumni Association 2018 Distinguished Alumna Award.

The award was presented in April during Reunion Weekend. While on campus, Dr. Vohr presented the Distinguished Alumna Lecture, “The Power of Language,” which covered her research and clinical work with infants with hearing loss.

She is currently the director of Women and Infants Hospital’s Neonatal Follow-up Program in Providence and medical director of the Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Program, as well as a professor of pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Vohr grew up near Albany, in Chatham, where her parents, German immigrants, ran a popular inn called the The Fairview House. One of their guests, New York City pediatric psychiatrist Louise Desperte, M.D., first sparked Dr. Vohr’s interest in medicine.

“She brought some of her patients with her for the summer so they could continue to receive treatment. I was fascinated that children had these behavioral differences caused by psychiatric illness, and that Dr. Desperte was providing treatment to help them. She was the first one to suggest I go into medicine, and it changed my whole vision going forward,” she recalled.

At Adelphi University, Dr. Vohr studied pre-med and also got her first taste of medical research, a lifelong passion. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she became one of only five women in the Class of 1966 at Albany Medical College.

“The Albany newspaper wrote an article about us because it was the largest number of women ever accepted into a class at Albany Med,” said Dr. Vohr. “I credit the Medical College for always staying on top of trends and changes in medicine.”

In school, Dr. Vohr focused on pediatrics, and assisted Chief of Pediatrics Paul Patterson, M.D., with a cystic fibrosis research project on the effects of varying protein diets.

“He was very supportive,” she said.

After graduating, Dr. Vohr completed an intern-ship at Rhode Island Hospital. Her subsequent education included residencies in pediatrics at Rhode Island Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Boston. She also completed her fellowship in neonatology at Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.

For the past 28 years, she has served as national coordinator of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network Follow-up Studies and she recently was the recipient of an Innovation Challenge Grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The results of the research demonstrated the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary “Transition Home” program that addresses the needs of both the infant and mother to reduce post-discharge emergency visits and hospitalizations resulting in both improved outcomes and health care cost savings for high-risk infants.

Dr. Vohr resides in Barrington, Rhode Island, with her husband, Thomas Gidley. They have four children and two grandchildren. Her granddaughter, Michaela Hurley, will attend Albany Medical College this fall.

John M. Cohen, M.D. ’63The Alumni Association is proud to recognize Dr. Cohen with the 2018 Exemplary Award for his extraordinary philanthropic support of Albany Medical College and the Alumni Association.

Dr. Cohen is a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1963. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and completed his internship

at Rhode Island Hospital and a pediatric residency at Boston City Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cohen has served as CEO of Pediatrics at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for 22 years and was on the board of the Pediatric Physicians at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

He previously was a weekly medical contributor to a Boston television station (WCVB Channel 5) health segment, along with fellow alumnus G. Timothy Johnson, M.D. ’69.

In 2008, Dr. Cohen’s generosity and diligent outreach efforts created the Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund. He saw a need to help students who were grappling with the growing financial burdens associated with medical school debt. His goal with launching the fund was to allow students to focus more on academic pursuits and less on monetary concerns. He also viewed his support of the scholarship as integral to attracting and keeping talented students at Albany Medical College. Since its inception, more than 70 students have benefited from this fund. His continued leadership gifts ensure that the fund continues to benefit future generations of medical students.

Dr. Cohen has been involved in many nonprofit institutions including The New England Aquarium, the Huntington Theatre Company and Planned Parenthood of Massachusetts. He and his wife, Bette, have been married 52 years and have two children and four grandchildren.

Dean Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84 shares, “Dr. Cohen has demon- strated an extraordinary philanthropic commitment to Albany Medical College. His loyalty and commitment to our mission, and his gifts in support of the long-term viability of the College serve as a positive example for all alumni.”

Peter M. Stevens, M.D. ’73Dr. Stevens is a graduate of Dartmouth College and is a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1973. He completed his Orthopedic residency at the University of Utah and Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. A diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Stevens is a member of the American Academy of

Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. He holds the Sherman S. Coleman, M.D. Endowed Chair of Orthopedics at the University of Utah School of Medicine at Primary Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Stevens has expertise in the management of a wide range of pediatric orthopedic conditions, including developmental hip dislocation, Perthes disease, foot and ankle deformities and the correction of limb malalignment involving rotational, angular and length abnormalities. He invented a minimally invasive technique (8-Plate for Guided Growth) for treating these complex problems, without having to resort to osteotomy. Having lectured and taught internationally, this technique has since become popular worldwide.

He is an active volunteer with the global charitable organization, Mercy Ships, whose fleet brings the world’s largest civilian hospital ships to ports in African countries where clean water, electricity, medical facilities and skilled personnel is limited or nonexistent. He has performed medical outreach service in Bolivia, Bhutan, Nepal, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.

Dr. Stevens also serves as a consultant for the State of Utah Children With Special Healthcare Needs (CSHCN), which provides and promotes family-centered, coordinated care and facilitates the development of community-based systems to underserved children with special needs and their families. Dr. Stevens travels several times each year within Utah to treat underserved children in remote and rural areas of the state.

Many members of the Class of 1973 had the pleasure of knowing Gayle, to whom Dr. Stevens was married for 38 years, and who predeceased him in 2008. He has since married Susan (Dolan); together they have three children and two grandchildren, living nearby in Salt Lake City. They built a LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) home in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains and enjoy outdoor recreation, gardening, the arts, and international travel.

The Humanitarian Award was created in 1995 to recognize alumni of Albany Medical College who excel, beyond daily practice, in serving humankind.

Michael G. Rosco, M.D. ’18 Michael Rosco, known to his family and friends as “Mike” is a native Californian. He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif., where he received a degree in Business Admin-istration and Management. Before start-ing medical school, Mike had extensive experience in business, marketing and sales in the greater Los Angeles area.

In his first year at Albany Medical College, Mike was elected class president—a role he held for all four years. Additionally, he was vice president of the LGBT People in Medicine Club, a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and IMANA service organization, and co-founder of the AMC Water Polo Club. In his many leadership roles, Mike forged strong and effective connections with the entire student body and served as an important liaison to the College administration and Alumni Association.

During his time in Albany, Mike volunteered in the community to create positive change. He founded the AMC Holiday Food Drive and enlisted the support of medical and graduate students to donate hundreds of pounds of food to the local food pantry during the holiday season. As a member of the IMANA service organization, Mike engaged with the local Muslim community to provide information on health issues relating to diabetes and hypertension.

He has participated in research studies at UCLA and published a paper in July 2017: “The Bactericidal Concentration of Povidone- Iodine” in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Mike will pursue a career in ophthalmology. He will begin his preliminary residency in internal medicine at Stony Brook Teaching Hospital in Stony Brook, N.Y., followed by his ophthalmology residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, Calif.

Mike is tremendously honored to be the recipient of the Frank C. Maxon, Jr., M.D. Alumni Award and wishes to express his gratitude to the entire Albany Med community, his parents, Nell and AMC alumnus Michael D. Rosco, M.D. ’60, and his partner, Paul, for their steadfast commitment, support and love.

Albany Medical College offers a broad and balanced curriculum for our diverse body of students.

It is our pleasure to highlight these select graduates of the Class of 2018 who shared

something significant they learned about themselves while at Albany Medical College:

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 8 P R O F I L E O F G R A D UAT E SM . D . , P H . D . , N . A . , P. A .

I’d like to share a few lessons that I learned at Albany Med. First, it begins with believing in yourself—self-belief also sparks others to believe in you. Second, never underestimate the importance of a great support system of family and friends. Third, feeling uncomfortable in a new situation is normal, part of the process and a sign of growth. By expanding your comfort zone, you become a better and stronger version of yourself. Last, pursue something you love, and you will take great pride in doing so.

Albany Medical College has been a rewarding experience. I have grown in knowledge and skill through classes, clinical rotations and hands-on training in the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center. I had the opportunity to develop my interest in pediatrics during rotations and participate in a literacy program at Albany Med’s Children’s Hospital. I made lasting friendships and learned the value of a support system. The most significant skill I gained is the confidence to be an effective Physician Assistant. Albany Med encouraged me to be independent and passionate, and to be motivated to seek answers because there is always more to learn!

I have learned that I have nothing to fear about being myself. I discovered that when I try something new and things don’t work out, it serves as an important part of the learning process and scientific method. Diversity of opinion is celebrated in science, and we all have unique perspectives and important ideas to share. With my training and education from Albany Med, I am not afraid to bring mine to the table.

While at Albany Med, I have had the opportunity to meet great people—from all walks of life—who encourage and promote individual and professional growth. Three important things I have learned: 1) It is never too late to go after what you want; 2) Don’t compare yourself to others; and 3) I am proud and appreciative of everything I have achieved and accomplished.

Commissioning…The Tradition Continues By Jeffrey D. Hubbard, M.D. ’68, Historian

Several medical students at the College are commissioned officers and will serve their respective branches of military service. After the awarding of Doctor of Medicine diplomas at the 180th Commencement in May, Kevin C. Kiley, M.D., Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, retired 41st Surgeon General, United States Army, and Honorary Member of the Alumni Association (2014), addressed the assembly:

“Dean Verdile, distinguished members of the Board and my platform-

mates, thank you for the opportunity and the honor to participate in this

short but very important ceremony. For the brand-new graduates and

their family members—congratulations.

A sergeant major once told me when I was getting ready to give a

speech, “Be short, be good and be gone.” That is my intent.

The armed forces have a really intense interservice rivalry, everywhere

from the football field to the halls of the Pentagon…from privates to

generals. We talk about the Army, the Air Force and the Navy:

the dumb, the devious and the defiant. That explains a lot when you

can’t understand when one of the other services wants something or

doesn’t want you to have something.

But there is no better Air Force in the world. There is no better Navy

in the world or Marine Corps, and there is no better Army. They

understand the mission of protecting our country, our way of life,

our constitution, our freedoms. And on this Memorial Day weekend,

we also like to remember those we lost in service to the nation.

I remember Colonel Brian Allgood, an army orthopedic surgeon who

trained the first class of army medics that were nationally EMT-B certified

—a brand new transition. This was 15 years ago and those medics have

saved many a life on the battlefield. COL Allgood and eleven comrades

died when their helicopter was brought down by rocket fire in Iraq.

And Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen, who led a Navy Seal team

attempting to rescue a lone survivor in the hills of Afghanistan and was

shot down and lost his life with fifteen others.

So while we enjoy the weekend, and I want you to do that, remember

that Memorial Day is for those we have lost.

One might ask, why would Brian Allgood or why would Erik Kristensen

go and do those kinds of things? Why would they join the Army, Navy,

Air Force or Marines? The answer is very simple. We send our very best

to do that important work. And you are going to see three of your

outstanding classmates here join those ranks today. Albany Medical

College sends out the very best and I congratulate all of you on that.

I would like to call them out one at a time, alphabetically. [Whereupon,

the assembly, led by the graduating classes, rose and began applauding

these three.]

Stephanie Hur, M.D., Captain, United States Air Force

Rafael Jacob Kaplan, M.D., Captain, United States Army

Lori Tantlinger, M.D., Lieutenant, United States Navy

Repeat after me:

I, [state your full name], having been appointed an officer in

the Armed Forces of the United States, in the rank of [Lieutenant or

Captain], do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the

Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and

domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, that

I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation, or

purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the

duties of the office upon which I am about to enter.

So help me God.

Congratulations!”

Doctor Kiley asked the assembly to remain standing, and Deirdre Michael, Albany Medical Center Space Management, took the podium. The officers faced the Colors and saluted, and Ms. Michael, unaccompanied, filled the amphitheater with the words of the National Anthem.

The seldom-sung fourth verse of the Anthem expresses, in the language of 1814, the same sentiments as those expressed by Dr. Kiley:

“O thus be it ever where free men shall stand

Between their lov’d home, and the war’s desolation,

Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n rescued land

Praise the pow’r that has made and preserv’d us a nation!”

COLLEGE NEWS & EVENTS

Peter Vincent, Ph.D. ’89 has been appointed associate dean of the Graduate Studies Program of Albany Medical College, replacing Richard W. Keller, Ph.D., who held the position since 2010, and is retiring. Dr. Vincent will continue to serve as vice chair and the director of graduate studies in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology.

Dr. Vincent is a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, Dennis W. Metzger, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbial Disease, was awarded a $1.9 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the third largest institute of the National Institutes of Health.

For more than a decade, Dr. Metzger and his colleagues have been investigating new ways to prevent severe illness and death due to influenza. With research focused on the lungs, they are attempting to discover ways to prevent severe lung inflammation caused by the flu, as most flu-related deaths are caused by inflammation and secondary lung infections.

The Department of Immunology and Microbial Disease—under Dr. Metzger’s leadership—has become an internationally-recognized infectious disease research group receiving more than $50 million in National Institutes of Health funding during the past 19 years.

New CMS Guidelines

In February, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released new guidelines eliminating the requirement to redocument medical student notes. Annie Rutter, M.D. ’08, chair of The Precepting Expansion Initiative—a national task force led by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine—approached CMS with a request for revised guidelines. “Our goal is to reduce administrative burdens for clinical preceptors and enhance learning. This change increases efficiency and allows students to be contributing members of care teams. Medical decision making, of course, is always the responsibility of the physician,” said Dr. Rutter in the Becker’s Hospital Review article announcing the change in guidelines.

Dr. Rutter is an assistant professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine and director of Medical Student Education.

STUDENTNEWSEarlier this year, first-year medical students Gurleen

Kaur and Wasila Mansouri, were recognized at the Eastern Atlantic Student Research Forum in Miami with awards for the best basic science posters. They were later invited to present their work at the National Student Research Forum in Galveston, Texas, in April. Mansouri’s study, “AFPEP for the Treatment and Prevention of Breast Cancer,” was named best basic science poster, the first time an Albany Medical College student has won the top prize at the national meeting. They were first-year medical students competing against third-year students at the time of their honors.

In May, Lucy Gee, M.D.’18,

Ph.D. ’09 was one of ten presenters whose work was selected from 1,500 research abstracts at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons’ meeting in New Orleans. Dr. Gee’s study focused on how patients with chronic pain treated with spinal cord stimulation had better outcomes when not treated with opioids before and after surgery. As a student, Dr. Gee worked closely with Drs. Damian Shin and Julie Pilitsis ’98 in the department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics.

COMMUNITY MOURNS THE PASSING OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE LEADER

Dr. Christopher King, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, passed away on March 26, 2018. An expert in both adult and pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. King was an esteemed physician leader and a tremendous mentor and colleague to faculty, residents and students. He was the consummate academic emergency physician, and his loss is mourned by members of the Albany Med community.

Dr. King was awarded an Honorary Degree from Albany Medical College, posthumously, at the May Commencement ceremony.

2018 MATCH DAY MATCH CHALLENGE CAMPAIGN

On Campus—A Hub of BioDiscovery to Benefit Patients

Three years after it was launched, the Albany Medical College Biomedical Acceleration and Commercialization Center (BACC) has brought together medical device and software start-up companies at a site on the Albany Medical Center campus that is rapidly reaching its capacity.

According to Vincent P. Verdile, The Lynne and Mark Groban, M.D. ’67 Distinguished Dean, Albany Medical College, and senior executive vice president for system care delivery at Albany Medical Center, “This regional economic initiative, supported by Albany Medical College, is helping businesses discover and develop breakthrough biotechnologies that will improve patient care and bring biomedical innovations to the market.”

As part of Albany Medical College’s support of the BACC, Dr. Verdile explains that companies are provided access to wet lab space, business and financial guidance and connections to world-class researchers, health care professionals and industry leaders.

Eight companies and three affiliates are currently housed in the BACC and there is a collaborative effort amongst physicians, researchers, inventers, entrepreneurs, students, investors and administrators to stimulate innovations in health care. As part of the BACC, Albany Medical College was one of the first private colleges to be included in the STARTUP-NY program, a designation that provides eligible businesses tax-free status for 10 years.

Medical director for the BACC is Richard Blinkhorn, M.D., chair, Department of Medicine, Richard T. Beebe Professor of Medicine at Albany Medical College, and chief of service for medicine at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Other leadership includes Kevin Leyden, senior vice president for business development and strategic partnerships, and Amy Johnson who serves as director and entrepreneur in residence.

In 2017, the BACC received New York State Certified Incubator designation from the New York State Department of Economic Development. This recognition includes up to $125,000 per year for three years and, with successful recertification, potentially five more years of state funding. In addition, the BACC now joins an existing network of 10 Innovation Hot Spots and 10 New York State Certified Business Incubators for sharing ideas and best business practices.

In December it was announced that Praxis Biotechnology, housed in the BACC, was awarded $50,000 after winning FuzeHub’s commercialization competition. Praxis is developing a topical medication targeting a specific protein found on the skin of people with rosacea. The company plans to use the award money to advance their product development by funding patient testing.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Service Learning Program

By Ethan Litman, ’19 and Nikitha Mangalapally, ’19

Our matriculation to Albany Medical College coincided with the peak of the opioid epidemic that continues to plague our country. As we ventured into our community, we saw first-hand the devastating effect this epidemic has had on our future patients and their families. We wanted to work to improve the lives of our patients, both in and out of the hospital, but we weren’t sure how. What could

medical students do that would actually make a difference?

Albany Medical College students have a tremendous presence in our local community, but we realized few students were involved in community service programs at the medical center. There are community-based resources for mothers to receive mental health counseling and addiction treatment, but few, if any, resources exist for newborns born to mothers suffering from opioid dependence. We saw an opportunity for students to provide support for these patients at the Albany Medical Center NICU while learning about the public health consequences and implications of the opioid epidemic in our region.

In 2016 we launched The AMC Curriculum for Understanding the Development and Dynam- ics of Life in the NICU (CUDDLIN) Service Learning Program, a collaboration between the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Medical Education. Since its inception, more than 40 students have been trained in how to provide care to newborns experiencing the effects of opioid withdrawal. It is well established that human contact

and stimulation can decrease the stress hormone cortisol, heart rate, and blood pressure of newborns. Many mothers have other children, job responsibili-ties, or travel length restrictions that limit the amount of time they are able to spend in the NICU with their newborn. We saw this as the optimal opportunity for medical students. Not only are we able to provide a service for pediatric patients and their families through providing human contact when their family is unable to be at their bedside, but we are also teaching medical students how to interact with this vulnerable population. For a physician-leader to be effective, they must be well versed in the problems facing their communities. It is our hope that by increasing medical student awareness about societal and medical implications of a critical care admission, we foster an environment of patient advocacy, physician leadership and scientific curiosity.

Our NICU Cuddlers are first and second year medical students who undergo a comprehensive orien-tation where they were trained on proper neonatal holding tech-niques, standard NICU operating

procedures, and professional com-munication style. The Cuddlers take two hour shifts where they read, talk, and nurture newborns, providing them with attention to help them learn and grow. At the end of each session, the students leave a short note to let the family know that their loved one has been held and cared for by our team of students. At the conclusion of each semester, medical students attend a reflection session led by faculty mentors to share their experiences, brainstorm ways to improve our program, and devel-op creative solutions to challenges they faced through participation.

To date, we have provided more than 300 hours of cuddling to our NICU patients and have received positive feedback from parents, NICU staff and students. Implementation of this program would not have been possible without the financial support of Albany Medical College and the department of Pediatrics. It is our hope to continue to grow so we can continue to provide human touch to our most vulnerable patients and to expose students to this population of patients.

Ethan Litman, ’19

Nikitha Mangalapally, ’19

“It is so easy to slip into the “med school bubble” and forget that there is a world that exists outside of the library.

When I get up to the NICU and sit down with a little one, I don’t have the distraction of phones, computers, textbooks,

classmates, etc. It is so refreshing to be able to focus solely on the person right in front of you. Being present is something

I always strive to be, but it’s no surprise that we all can slip away at times because of the many distractions in our lives.”

Dr. Shin entered medical school with the expectation that she would enter a specialty linking her to direct patient care, like her mother who was a pediatrician. Her professional path went in a different direction during her fourth year at Albany Med after taking an elective in pathology. “I was on track to be a clinician seeing patients. That’s all I knew about at the time,” says Dr. Shin. “Five students were going into pathology that year and I took the rotation with them at the beginning of my fourth year. I realized during this pivotal month that Pathology was well-suited to my interests.”

She enjoyed the visually-oriented component of the specialty among other facets and went on to complete a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and breast fellowship training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Prior to her return to Albany Med last September, Dr. Shin had spent her entire pathology career at the Weill Cornell Medical Center making significant contributions to clinical service, research, education and administration. Most recently she served as vice-chair for education, chief of Breast Pathology and director of the pathology residency training program and breast pathology fellowship program. She also recently edited a textbook on breast pathology which has been well received by the pathology community.

Since her arrival at Albany Med, Dr. Shin has immersed herself in getting to know the organization and the inner workings of the pathology and laboratory medicine department. She has

already begun implementing change, a significant one being the conversion to a pathology subspecialty sign-out model which follows a trend nationwide of having each pathologist working in a distinct specialty area rather than as a generalist.

“It is difficult to be a master of all,” notes Dr. Shin. “As medicine becomes more specialized in the clinical arena, the demand for a sub-specialized pathology service grows.”

According to Dr. Shin, this will drive treatment in the future as personalized or precision-based medicine and targeted therapies advance. She also feels it offers an advantage to medical residents by providing an opportunity for them to learn in a very focused environment.

Dr. Shin acknowledges there is a shortage of doctors in the field. “Medical students need more and earlier exposure to pathology while in school. They need to understand how pathologists practice and that they can specialize in it.”

She feels it is an exciting time for her specialty. “Pathology sheds a light on the underpinnings of disease. Without our work, there is no treatment. Molecular diagnostics and new technologies will transform our abilities in the future.”

When asked about memorable experiences while at Albany Med, she comments that a lot has changed since she was a student. “The area has evolved nicely in the last 20 years. There is diversity, and it’s a region which offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities.”

Smiling, she shares that meeting her husband, thoracic surgeon John P. Nabagiez, M.D. ’93, has had the most impact on her life. Dr. Nabagiez has joined Albany Medical Center’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and is associate professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the College.

Being a working mother and medical professional can be demanding, and Dr. Shin credits the unwavering support of her husband and other family members with permitting her to balance her professional success.

Not one to shrink from a challenge, Dr. Shin will enter the Executive Master’s degree in Business Administration program through New York University’s Stern School of Business in August. “My goal is to be in a curriculum that is not health care focused. I want to gain a broad education with these studies and bring back what I learn and adapt it to health care.”

Donor Spotlight:

David Nalin, M.D. ’65 David Nalin, M.D. ’65, retired director of Vaccine

Scientific Affairs at Merck and his collaborator at Albany Medical College, Edmund Gosselin, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbial Disease, have been developing and patenting a unique vaccine delivery device that utilizes the body’s own cells as a mediator to boost vaccine immunity. The approach uses an individual’s white blood cells; specifically, peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

“White blood cells are easier and faster to work with. Our goal is to draw blood from an individual, separate out the white blood cells, mix these with several disease agent antigens, and deliver the exposed white blood cells back as a nasal spray or droplet vaccine,” said Dr. Nalin.

Dr. Nalin spent his career doing his part to improve the world’s health. In the 1960s, while working in former East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), he developed oral rehydration therapy (ORT), which is credited with saving more than 70 million lives from diarrhea across the world. Both the journal, The Lancet, and UNICEF cited ORT as one of the most important medical advances in the 20th century. Even after retiring in 2002 from Merck, where he led the clinical development of the first effective hepatitis A vaccine and was the first clinical monitor for the HPV vaccine program, Dr. Nalin has not stopped his quest for new and better vaccines.

Several years ago, Dr. Nalin and Dr. Gosselin began their collaboration by focusing on a new vaccine delivery system as a universal platform to benefit children in developing countries. Interestingly, this led to the search to see whether the platform may be helpful in developing better vaccines for elderly patients whose aging immune systems don’t respond as well to traditional vaccines for diseases like flu and pneumonia.

“It’s a priority research area,” Dr. Nalin said.

“One of the advantages of this platform is that it is ex-vivo so we can try using adjuvants in our vaccines that ordinarily would not be able to be used directly in the body. We mix a small sample of white cells with various adjuvants, then remove the adjuvants, and give the now immunized white cells back to individuals as an intranasal vaccine.”

“This collaboration has been terrific and I have had great pleasure in returning to conduct research at my alma mater. The academic ability of the post-grads working with us is excellent and they are highly trained in their specialty,” said Dr. Nalin who is now a professor emeritus at the Medical College.

Dr. Nalin has redirected his gifts to Albany Medical College to support research. He did this by combin-ing outright gifts with gifts from his IRA required minimum distribution.

“This option isn’t taxable to me, and is immediately put to use by the Medical College. I urge other alumni to consider their IRA required minimum distribution for their donations. They may discover this particular gift strategy is the perfect match as they consider a gift to Albany Med,” he said.

Dr. Nalin’s earlier gifts to the Medical College supported young researchers through The David R. Nalin ’65 Endowed Fund for International Research at Albany Medical College, a permanent fund designed to support international research projects for medical students.

“The international research endowment has been a fruitful endeavor. Every year several medical students receive annual scholarships for meaningful research projects in the field of international medicine. As an AMC student, my experiences studying infectious diseases in British Guiana influenced my career in global medicine and vaccine research. I hope I have helped inspire other students to help solve medical problems for people worldwide,” he said.

Pietrocola, M.D. ’75 was honored in June with the 2018 Pillars of Albany Medical Center Award, the highest recognition awarded by Albany Medical Center which honors individuals who epitomize the spirit of Albany Medical Center and whose sustaining work and contributions reflect the Center’s mission.

The following year, she completed a fellowship in transplant surgery. For the next five years, Dr. Pietrocola performed renal transplantation surgery at Albany Med before moving to the Albany VA Hospital. In 1990, she went into private practice, returning to Albany Med in 2005 where she joined the faculty to concentrate on breast surgery and to head the newly-formed Section of Breast and Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery.

During her tenure at Albany Med, she served as president of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff as well as in leadership positions with the American College of Surgeons, serving on its New York Chapter Council for more than 20 years and on the national Board of Governors.

Dr. Matulonis was featured in an article in the May 29, 2018, Wall Street Journal, entitled, “Are Big Clinical Trials Relevant? Dr. Matulonis, chief, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers and Brock-Wilson Family Chair at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, is an advocate for smaller trial size because many of her patients are gravely ill. Dr. Matulonis is a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

The opening will serve as an opportunity to extend Cleveland Clinic’s culture and operational model in the United Kingdom and further develop our globally integrated health care system. It’s an exciting opportunity that I feel fortunate to be involved in. My wife and I will relocate to London in September 2018 and welcome all friends and colleagues with interest to visit.”

John W. Abbuhl, M.D. ’49

John W. Abbuhl, M.D.’49, passed away on January 6, 2018, at the age of 91.

He was a visionary conservationist, alumnus, friend and supporter of Albany Medical College. He served as a Navy flight surgeon during the Korean War, completed his pediatric residency at Albany Hospital in 1956, and went on to a remarkable career spanning 50 years at the practice he founded, Schoolhouse Road Pediatrics. He served as president of the medical staff at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

A founding member of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy, Dr. Abbuhl enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting, and even alpine skiing into his eighties, displaying a vivacity that characterized his life and spirit. One of his chief avocations was trees, a passion that blossomed in 1966 when he moved his family to Slingerlands, just outside Albany. There, on Pine Hollow Road, Dr. Abbuhl devoted his free time to collecting and planting trees and shrubs from around the world. In the next few decades, he acquired adjacent properties, built 11 ponds, created diverse habitats and trails, and intensified his planting efforts in what he named Pine Hollow Arboretum. In 2007, Dr. Abbuhl turned his former hobby into a public, member-supported, not-for-profit nature center with more than 3,300 specimens on 26 acres.

Dr. Abbuhl will be remembered for his devotion to family and patients, exceptional community service, conservation and philanthropy. The Arboretum survives and prospers, with a widening educational influence. Several of his children became physicians and his legacy at Albany Medical College continues as his grandson, Jake, is a member of the Class of 2021.

He remained Chairman for seven years, and in 1974 became Dean, succeeding Harold C. Wiggers, Ph.D. In 1979, he left to become Dean at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Stuart Bondurant’s influence on twentieth century internal medicine and American medical education is broad and deep. He foresaw the difficulties of the cost of medical care and its influence on medical education, and of unreliable support for research. He held responsible positions in many professional societies. Three thousand physicians received their degrees under his deanships.

At Albany Medical Center Hospital, Bondurant instituted the policy that only house officers (not attending physicians) could write orders on patients admitted to internal medicine. This made the Hospital a highly sought-after medical residency, and precipitated some realignments in hospital admissions and among the department faculty. On his watch, the department of medicine full-time faculty enlarged significantly. Two distinguished senior faculty, no strangers to academic and professional honors, when asked about his administrations here, used the words, “…a good man…” in the first sentence. It is a fitting epitaph.
