Google I/O (Input/Output) is the annual conference that Google organises to let developers know how the year went and what it’s making new. !

This year the leading role were acted by Android: big design improvements, new “Androdified” devices, in general the huge Google ecosystem was redefined. !

Android is a thing. A big one. !

Android it’s not just Samsung phones and tablets. Android is all smartphones and tablets that are not Windows’ and not Apple’s (leave alone NGM and stuff), as well as a variety of other devices. Like what? Like watches, TVs, cars.

This is material design.” !Material is the metaphor. !What happens when you swipe that surface? What's underneath it? What's it made of? !Google would like to found a unifying theory, in matter of web design, of a rationalised space and a system of motion. Android wear

Android wear is all about giving the right information at the right time. When you need something, your wearable will give you all the information needed even before you ask for it. If the time for asking comes, wearable will answer well. !

Let’s focus on smart watches, among whom new challenges and opportunities rely.

• They extend the Android notification center, letting users receive and handle notifications without pulling their phone out of the pocket. Android wear will provide a full “phone free” experience.

• In future releases, Google will also allow to create watch faces, that substantially means that we will download a Rolex from Google Play.

Lyft - www.lyft.com !Just talk to your smartphone to request a pickup. You’ll get matched with a friendly, background-checked driver from their community within minutes. !With Lyft, you can call a car through voice input, have your location automatically detected and get updates, finally you can rate your driver, without pulling your phone out of the pocket. Unfortunately, not KITT from Knight Rider will come to pick you up, unless you’re David Hasseloff.

Pinterest !Pinterest App for Android is smart-watch-ready. !It notifies the user whenever he is nearby a place pinned on a board he follows. Then he can easily ask Google Maps to help him reach the place. !Android wear allows new enhanced experiences, giving apps a good reason for sending notifications.

Android Auto

Our cars keep us connected to the physical world, but disconnected to our digital life. Even though it's unsafe, and in many cases illegal, people use their phones while driving.

!For this reason, back in January, Google announced the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), a

global alliance of technology and auto industry leaders committed to bringing the Android platform to cars starting in 2014.

Android Auto

Android Auto brings into cars three of the most useful features for driving: Navigation, Communication and Music.

Everything is voice enabled (yes, you will be able t speak to Google Now!), and while you speak your eyes will stay on the road and hands on the wheel.

Simplified interfaces make users interact without distractions. Voice input and audio output make cars more interactive and safer at the same time.

Android Auto and Android wear share the same SDK, Developers can code applications for a Fiat Panda and a pair of Rayban at the same time.

Android TV

TVs are getting smarter and smarter every day. They are now part of a wide platform, with pay per view films, internet services, game arenas. !

Google Play is a big platform that distributes music, films and TV series, that’s why Google decided to bring Android Operating System on your living room too. And obviously, as the other Android distributions, Android TV is completely open to developers, who can build and publish apps on top of it.

Android TV comes with what is been called “Lean back user experience”. It is both an adaptation of Android for the so called “ten feet” experience, that is the average distance between the user and the TV, and a set of developer tools (SDK) that allows developers to easily turn a tablet application into a TV one. !

Particularly interesting is the Android TV home screen, that shows recommended shows for the user, based on personal tastes and previously views, and it’s opened to third party applications.

Google Fit is a new framework integrated with Android. !It allows applications for fitness and health care to share data one from each other. Collecting all needed permissions, apps will use existing user data, like gender, age, average hearth rate, nutritional habits, etc. in a unique operational and analytical cluster. !Nike and Adidas already announced a partnership with Google Fit and will soon release devices running within this framework.
