Special Collections Richard Roller Papers Biography Richard Roller (b. 1930; d. 1998) began collecting glass fruit and vegetable canning jars around 1968. At that time jar collecting was a small hobby; not many people collected and those that did had little information about the history of their jars. By Roller's death thirty years later all that had changed; he made a remarkable contribution to the increase in collectors' knowledge of jar history. In addition to collecting, Roller devoted much of his time to researching and publishing information on the development of the industry and of numerous jars. In 1973, he began his Fruit Jar Newsletter, which he edited until his death and for which he wrote many articles. The 1983 publication of his Standard Fruit Jar Reference attempted to bring together in one publication what was known about the history of over 1400 fruit jars at that time. These two publications remain Roller's most important legacies to the hobby. Roller understood the importance of making his research findings available to all collectors, beginners and advanced. He received and answered thousands of letters during his career, sometimes a half dozen a day. He was very careful to use only documented evidence wherever possible and to correct previously published mistakes whenever he could. Richard Roller died in July, 1998 at the age of sixty-eight. Scope and Content The Richard Roller Papers contain documentation on the history of glass manufacturing, with an emphasis on fruit and vegetable canning jars. The collection is divided into four categories: MSS 179 (manuscript collection), P 179 (photograph collection), PN 179 (photograph negative collection), and S 179 (slide collection). In addition, a collection of published books and periodicals is catalogued and can be located by searching in the Library's CardCat. There is also a collection of unprocessed audio recordings.

At that time jar collecting was a small hobby; not many people collected and those that did had little information about the history of their jars. In addition to collecting, Roller devoted much of his time to researching and publishing information on the development of the industry and of numerous jars.

Richard Roller Collection MSS 179 Ball Research File
Because Roller concentrated so much energy on studying the Ball Brothers and Ball products, the research files pertaining to these two subjects are housed separately in boxes fifteen through seventeen (three feet) under the heading Ball Research File. The folders are arranged alphabetically by the underlined key word in the folder title. The keyword is never "Ball." The file contains both primary documents from the Ball family and Ball Corporation operations as well as secondary documents about the family and company. A collection of Ball correspondence is at the end of box eighteen. There are no correspondence directly related to the Ball brothers or the Ball Corporation in the Correspondence file; all material (except publications) directly related to Ball is in the Ball Research File.

Richard Roller Collection MSS 179 Correspondence (Research, General, and Fruit Jar)
The collection contains 3.8 feet of correspondence housed in boxes twenty through twenty-four. The series is divided into two sub-series. The first, Research Correspondence, contain correspondence between Roller and institutions arranged alphabetically. The folders in the second are labeled General Correspondence. This sub-series contain first correspondence between Roller and specific individuals arranged alphabetically by last name followed by a chronological arrangement of Roller's correspondence with various individuals. The folders in the chronological arrangement also bear the label Fruit Jar Correspondence. This division is the product of Roller's own filing system. Some of the letters in the Fruit Jar Correspondence arrangement are not dated. In most cases, their age was approximated from the correspondence around them in Roller's own filing system. At the end of each year, a folder marked "undated" for that year contains most of these letters. Those which could not be confidently dated to a specific year are grouped in a folder labeled undated for a series of years at the end of the last year in that series. For example, a number of undated letters, known from their original position in Roller's own files to have been written between 1980 and 1983 can be found in a folder labeled, "1980-1983 undated" at the end of 1983. Three folders containing memos from telephone conversations from 1978 until 1990 are at the end of the fruit jar correspondence.

Richard Roller Collection MSS 179 Jar Price List File
Glass jar collectors and hobbyists often mail lists of jars in their collection that they would like to sell. Roller received a number of these lists over the years. They are now filed in the Jar Price List File (box twenty-five, one foot) The file is arranged alphabetically by either the name of the seller or the title of the seller's jar list. The first folder in this series contains a number of lists of which Roller had only one or two issues.

The Roller Collection Patent File comprises one foot (box twenty-seven). It consists of a complete manuscript copy of Ralph Bond's 1970 Fruit Jar Patents, copies of the fruit jar and fruit jar related patents issued between 1856 and 1942 that Roller collected, a manuscript copy of Roller's Fruit Jar Patents, 1870-1942, and some cross reference tables from Roller's patent collection books. The patent copies are arranged chronologically.

Because of their size and delicate condition these documents could not be stored in the letter size research file. They contain documents pertaining to two legal suits, one Homer Brooke Glass Company versus Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company, the other Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing company versus Hazel-Atlas Glass Company. The file also contains deeds and license transfers. LEGAL DOCUMENTS FILE 26 Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Co. v. Richard Roller Collection MSS 179 Publication File (Publications, Photocopied Articles, and Oversize Material) An aggressive researcher, Roller not only contributed a great deal of published literature to the field of jar collecting but also acquired a remarkable collection of published material written by others. Consequently, the collection's Publication File is rather large. It is divided into two sub-series and stored in boxes twenty-eight through thirty-two (five feet). The first sub-series contains complete Publications not catalogued with the collection's monographs. These include Ball Corporation publications, The Fruit Jar Newsletter, various hobby magazines, publications relating to the glass industry and newsletters. The publications are arraigned alphabetically with the newsletters filed the same way at the end of box twenty-nine. The second sub-series, Photocopied Articles, is stored in boxes thirty through thirty-two. This file includes photocopied articles from hobby magazines, among other materials. They are arranged alphabetically. Some of the material in the photocopied articles sub-series of the publication file is too large to store in boxes thirty through thirty-two. These materials can be found in boxes thirty-nine and forty of the Oversize Collection. The container list for the oversize collection also follows the container list for the regular collection in this finding aid. At the production of this finding aid, the negatives were being housed with the photograph collection. Many of the negatives have been identified. The negatives are not at this time, however, catalogued in any database. Many of the negatives undoubtedly correspond to photographs in the photograph collection, but the work of matching negative to photograph remains to be done. Slide Collection(S 179) In addition to the photograph collection, the Roller Papers contain a collection of 297 slides housed in one box (S 179, 0.2 feet) with the photograph collection. The subjects are similar to those of the photograph collection. Each slide is catalogued in a small Access database with the title "Roller Slides."

Richard Roller Collection MSS 179 Publications The final component of the finding aid is a list of published books in the Richard Roller Collection. The bibliography contains two lists, both arranged chronologically. The first list includes monographs while the second includes serials and periodicals. These books are housed in the Special Collection stacks. The publications are cataloged and may be searched through CardCat, the University Libraries' online catalog. MONOGRAPHS Bailey, Shirley R.
