Letter From The Rector:

Dear Friends:

‘Ten Reasons Why I Never Wash’

1) I was forced to as a child.2) People who wash are hypocrites – they thinkthey are cleaner than everybody else.3) There are so many different kinds of soap, Ican’t decide which one is best.4) I used to wash, but I got bored and stopped.5) I wash only on special occasions, likeChristmas and Easter.6) None of my friends wash.7) I’ll start washing when I get older and dirtier.8) I can’t spare the time.9) The bathroom is never warm enough in winter or cool enough insummer.10) People who make soap are only after your money.

I want to begin by making it abundantly clear that personally I do wash, everyday, and I’m proud to say so. The aim of the quotation above is tomake the point as to how silly it would be not to wash. Perhaps the bestknown link between washing and the bible would be the story of Jesuswashing the disciples’ feet during the Last Supper (see John 13:1-17).When Jesus comes to wash Peter’s feet the following discussion takesplace:

Peter: Lord, are you going to wash my feet?Jesus: You don’t realise now what I am doing but later you will under-stand.Peter: NO! You shall never wash my feet.Jesus: Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.Peter: Then wash not just my feet but my hands and head as well!Jesus: A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; hiswhole body is clean.

In practical terms Jesus’ meaning is straight forward – Peter would havehad his normal daily wash but now, having walked along the road, his feetwere dirty and therefore in need of a wash. Yet Jesus is also using theidea of washing as an image to communicate a point about spiritualissues.

Page 6: special andhra pradesh issue August 2016 final - AG.pdf · after Sunday 17th July 2016 Entries shall be delivered to 28 Hightown, Middlewich between 6pm & 8pm on Friday 15th July,

Those who have faith in Jesus, Christians, are clean – they have had theirspiritual ‘bath’ – an idea we reflect in the baptism service when we speak ofbeing ‘cleansed from sin’. We have literally been washed clean by Jesus. However, a moments honest reflection on my own life, and I suspect onyours also, will quickly reveal that actually my life is not free from wrongdoingand selfish behaviour (sin). Like Peter’s dirty feet, my feet too have become‘dirtied’ by the way I live and need to be washed – regularly – by prayer andconfession.

That is where the quotation above comes in – because so often we don’t‘wash’. We are very good at making excuses about why we don’t engage withJesus – as he sits waiting with a bowl and a towel to wash our dirtied feet.We come up with many reasons as to why we don’t pray daily, why we don’tattend church more regularly or why we don’t read the bible more. But at theend of the day – if you’ve got your feet dirty then you need to get themwashed. However justifiable the excuse – dirty feet smell.

Yours in ChristSimon Drew

Shanthi High School

Shanti High School began, in 1985, when Christ for All rented one room anda balcony in a block of flats, where a volunteer teacher could teach ninestreet children, thus giving them an education, and a way out of permanentpoverty.

The school rapidly grew until, today it has 300 children, covering Years 1-10,and sixteen staff. Thanks to the generous gifts of many people, Christ for Allwere able to build classrooms, purchase teaching aids, establish a sciencelaboratory, a library and a computer lab.

Standards are high; in the 2015-16 Academic Year, 29 children from theschool took their 10th Standard exams and 27 passed with distinction.

Over 10 years ago, a bus was purchased to bring in children fromsurrounding villages. One third of the pupils now come on the bus each day, with the bus making four rounds in the morning, and four in the evening, collecting children from 10 pickup points as far as 10km away, to ensure thatthey get to school safely.

This Bus is now becoming unreliable to run, and expensive to maintain, andit is time for it to be replaced.

The Water MillBeside a river stands the water millA remnant of those far distant daysWhere that water spills over the cillThe river gushes in froth and sprays

The water mill lay derelict for yearsAs nature and wildlife reclaimed allNo longer did the wheel turn gearsTo grind the corn when farmers call.

They took that frame now laid bareTo reconstruct it to its former gloryWith wood, stones and tender care,The water mill resumes its old story.

Mill stones are still, no corn to grindThe water wheel is simply for showNear the river with treasure to findWith tales to tell of that river below.
