Cat® C6.6 Engine with ACERT™Technology. The Cat® C6.6 is a 6.6 liters(403 in3) displacement, six cylinder,inline configured engine equipped witha Caterpillar Common Rail fuel System.It uses ACERT Technology, a series ofCaterpillar engineered innovations thatprovide advanced electronic control,precision fuel delivery and refined airmanagement, resulting in outstandingperformance and lower emissions.The Cat C6.6 with ACERT Technologymeets the U.S. EPA Tier 3, EuropeanUnion Stage IIIA and Japan MOCStep 3 emissions standards.

Design. The C6.6 features a compactdesign with heavy-duty engine featuresfor outstanding durability, reliabilityand performance. The C6.6 incorporatesa new cross flow cylinder head design,a 4 valve head and an ADEM™ A4electronic controller.

Electronic Controls. The C6.6 enginesuse advanced electronic controllers,which have a proven track record forperformance and reliability. ADEM A4Electronic Control Module (ECM)receives data from engine-mountedsensors and adjusts critical parametersto maintain optimum performance.These adjustments also optimize fueleconomy and emissions compliance.Electronics also make engines easierto troubleshoot and repair

Fuel Delivery. Fuel is introduced inthe combustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustionprocess. The ADEM A4 module directsthe injectors to deliver precise quantitiesof fuel at exactly the right times duringcombustion for optimum efficiency andperformance.

Air Management. The C6.6 uses aturbocharger fitted with a smart wastegate to give precise control of theboost pressure. Over the entire engineoperating ranges the result is improved:Throttle response, Lower fuelConsumption and optimized engineperformance. A new cross-flow designin the cylinder head facilitates airmovement, while tighter tolerancesbetween the piston and cylinder linerare reducing blow by gases.

Turbocharged and Aftercooled.A well-matched turbocharger andair-to-air aftercooler results in higherpower while keeping rpm steady andexhaust temperatures low.

Electric fuel priming pump. A standardelectric fuel priming pump is locatedin the primary fuel filter base above thecombined water separator/primary fuelfilter. A switch enables to easily primethe fuel system after a fuel filter service.

D6N Drawbar Pull

Torque Rise. The direct injectionelectronic fuel system provides acontrolled fuel delivery increase asthe engine lugs back from rated speed.This results in increased horsepowerbelow rated power. A combination ofincreased torque rise and maximumhorsepower improves response,provides greater drawbar pull andfaster dozing cycles.

Tiller Bar Control System. The tiller barcontrol system allows for simultaneouscomfortable, one-handed steering,direction and transmission control.

• The differential steering tiller barhas easy touch shift buttons forupshifts and downshifts.

• The farther the tiller bar is moved,the tighter the turn.

• To change machine direction,operators rotate the tiller barclockwise for forward orcounterclockwise for reverse.Neutral transmission position isin the middle between the two.

• Low tiller bar efforts assure operatorcomfort during long shifts.

Power Turn with Differential Steering.With differential steering, large bladeloads can be smoothly maneuveredwhile turning. The operator maintainsprecise control on slopes, aroundbuildings, bridge abutments, treesor other obstacles.

• Differential Steering has the abilityto work in tight areas by providing a“Best in Class” tight turning radius.

• Steering modulation is finely tunedfor precise control in all turningapplications.

• Regardless of ground conditions,steering is consistent because poweris maintained to both tracks duringoperation.

Differential Steering System. A planetarydifferential turns the machine by speedingup one track and slowing the otherwhile maintaining full power to both.The differential steering systemconsists of:

• Three planetary gear sets.

• A dedicated variable-displacementhydraulic pump.

• A bi-directional, fixed-displacementsteering motor.

• Heavy-duty steering drive gears.

• Two planetary gear sets (steering anddrive) make up the dual differential.

• A third planetary gear set, theequalizing planetary, resides in themain case and provides a maximum4.0 km/h (2.49 mph) speed differencebetween tracks.

Operation. When moving straight ahead,power flows through the transmissionpinion and bevel gear into the dualdifferential, transmitting equal,uninterrupted power to each final drive.While turning, power is shifted tothe outboard track speeding it up.The inboard track slows down toaccommodate a tighter turning radius.Forward ground speed remains thesame throughout the turn.

Differential SteeringDifferential Steering maintains power to both tracks while turning. Operators havecontrol of machine speed, direction and steering with the tiller bar controller, whilemaximizing production.

Multi Velocity Program (MVP).Caterpillar’s Multi Velocity Program(MVP) allows operators to choose fromfive different speed ranges in bothforward and reverse, increasing machineproductivity, decreasing fuel consumptionand significantly reducing operating costs.

Selectable operating speeds havebeen optimized to provide the bestperformance, fuel economy anddrawbar pull. The engine speed in eachspeed range adapts automatically toprovide a smooth, comfortable andperforming machine. Operator speedranges are independently selectablein both forward and reverse from 1.5,2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse speed range foreasy, efficient directional changes.

Auto-shift settings include:

• 1.5 forward to 2.5 reverse.

• 2.5 forward to 2.5 reverse.

• 2.5 forward to 1.5 reverse.

Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The D6N has an additional transmissionshifting feature for added performanceand operator comfort – the ElectronicClutch Pressure Control (ECPC).This unique feature provides smoothershifting by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.

Steering and Transmission Controls.The D6N Differential Steering systemdelivers the control the operators needfor all applications. Soft touch buttonslocated on the steering controls shift theelectronically controlled transmission.

Torque Converter. The D6N single-stagetorque converter efficiently responds tochanging load conditions by providingtorque multiplication, therefore increasingdrawbar pull. It provides protection tothe drive train components by preventingshock loads from heavy dozingapplications. The torque converter isefficiently matched to the power traincomponents and provides the superiorperformance you need.

Transmission. The proven planetarypowershift transmission features fivespeed ranges forward and five speedranges reverse and utilizes largediameter, high capacity, oil cooledclutches. To maximize the life of thetransmission, the planetary designdistributes loads and stresses overmultiple gears.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.

• The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design, and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case,even with the ripper installed.

• Forced oil flow lubricates and coolsclutch packs to provide maximumclutch life.

• Load compensating shiftingprovides smooth engagement of theclutches under loaded conditions.

Brakes. Oil cooled, hydraulicallyactuated, brakes provide higher torquecapacity and increased service life.

Elevated Final Drive.

• Isolates final drives from ground andwork tool induced impact loads forextended power train life.

• Keeps sprocket teeth, bushings andfinal drives away from abrasivematerials and moisture.

• Caterpillar uses single reductionplanetary final drives in the D6Nproviding long-lasting performanceand durability.

1) Steering Control. Differential SteeringTiller Bar control system providessimultaneous one-handed steeringand transmission control.

2) Differential Steering Motor.Bi-directional hydraulic steering motoractivates the dual differential, whichchanges the speed of individual tracks.Slowing one track and increasing thespeed of the other track achieves asmooth power turn.

3) Power Shift Transmission.Proven planetary design providesfast smooth speed changes whiledistributing loads over multiplegears for long life.

4) Final Drive. Caterpillar elevatedfinal drives provide isolation fromground or work tool impact loads,extending service life.

5) Brake Assembly. Oil cooled largediameter brake discs provide longservice life.

6) Engine. Caterpillar ® C6.6 DieselEngine with ACERT Technology meetscurrent engine exhaust emissionregulations.

7) Torque Converter. Efficient torqueconverter provides torque multiplicationfor increased drawbar pull and protectsthe drive train from shock loads.

State-of-the-art operator station has reduced sound levels, low cab vibrations and excellentvisibility. The Caterpillar comfort series air suspension seat helps reduce operator fatigue.Cab and air conditioning are standard.

Operator Station

Cab. The design is spacious andcomfortable to promote shift-longproductivity. Large glass window anddoor panels allow for excellent visibilityto the blade, rear and sides of themachine. Door and window seal designallows for a fully pressurized low dust

cab. Acoustic headliner material, andsound suppression foam panels reducesound levels.

Individual windshield wiper controlsare located in the front section ofthe headliner. The cooling system is

incorporated into the cab structureproviding good visibility to the rear ofthe machine. The operator can easilyaccess to the vital information regardingmachine functioning by having a lookon the efficient and clear dashboard.

Cat C500 Comfort Suspension Seat.Caterpillar C500 Comfort Series AirSuspended Seat is ergonomicallydesigned to support the operator invarious site conditions. This comfortequipment is now standard on the D6N.

• Seat is fully adjustable for maximumoperator comfort, support andreduced operator fatigue.

• Seat cushion reduces pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

• A standard lumbar adjustmentprovides lower back comfort.

• Heated seat cushions are availablefrom your Caterpillar Dealer.

Dash. The instrument panel, with easyto read analog gauges and warninglamps, keeps the operator aware ofany potential problems. All gaugesand readouts are easily visible in directsunlight. Warning lights and gaugeshave been relocated, providing preciseand efficient view of the alerts.HVAC controls and vents areconveniently located on the dash toprovide climate control for the operator.Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown controlsare located within easy reach.Footpads keep the operator stable andcomfortable while working on slopes.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS III).EMS III provides the operator instantfeedback on machine conditions andrecords performance data to helpdiagnose problems. It has flashablememory allowing system upgrades,as new technology and software becomeavailable. This system is compatiblewith Cat ET and CMS service tools.EMS with new functionalities includesthe following gauges and readouts:

• Fuel level gauge• Hydraulic oil temperature gauge• Engine coolant temperature gauge• Power train oil temperature gauge

• Indicators for:- Oil Pressure- Water in Fuel Separator

maintenance- Air Filter Plugging

• Engine oil pressure indicator• Engine speed digital readout • Transmission speed range indicator• Hour meter• Odometer

Throttle Rocker Switch. A rocker switchcontrol activates high or low idle with atouch of the finger. A decelerator pedalgives the operator full control of enginespeed when the rocker switch is in thehigh idle position. Specific enginespeeds can also be set with the rockerswitch to match application requirements.

To set engine speeds, push the decelpedal, select the desired speed andrecall it by activating the rocker switchfor 3 seconds.

Work Tool Controls. Low effort pilotoperated hydraulic controls make theD6N easy to operate and provide sure,precise blade control with less operatorfatigue. Ergonomically shaped bladeand ripper controls provide increasedoperator comfort during long shifts.

AccuGrade Attachment Ready Option.The AccuGrade Attachment ReadyOption (AccuGrade ARO) provides afactory installed on-board platform forthe AccuGrade Laser or GPS system.

All of the changes required to theelectrical system, hydraulic system,blade, and cab are incorporated into theAccuGrade ARO. Mounting bracketsadded on the blade allow easy installationof the masts. Mounting brackets in thecab secure the in-cab display. Plug-inpoints inside the cab and on the frontof the machine make it easy to installelectronic components.

Advantages. Current earthmoving andfine grading processes are labor intensive,dependent on manpower and instruments.Maintaining consistent grade betweenstakes is challenging, even forexperienced operators. The AccuGradeLaser and GPS Machine Control andGuidance Systems reduce laborrequirements and help operators workto the design plan by accurately cutting,filling and reducing material cost.

Automatic Blade Control Feature.Automatic control of the blade’s liftand/or tilt, provides consistent accuracywith higher productivity by reducingblade control demands on the operator.Based on correction signals, a hydrauliccontrol valve automatically raises orlowers the blade to maintain the correctedge elevation.

Applications. The AccuGrade Laserand the GPS systems are designed for awide range of construction earthmovingapplications requiring tight tolerancesand high productivity rates. Choosingwhether to use a Laser or GPS systemdepends on the job site requirements.

AccuGrade Laser Grade Control System.The laser system is ideal for fine gradingsites with flat, single slope or dual slopesurfaces such as industrial, commercialand residential building sites.

Laser In-Cab Display. The in-cab displaywith easy-to-read grade indicator andbacklit elevation display shows theoperator all AccuGrade systeminformation. The in-cab display arrowsshow the blade’s position relative tograde and indicate cut or fill requirementsof the work area. Push button operationallows the operator to easily switchfrom manual mode for rough gradingto automatic mode for fine grading.

AccuGrade GPS Control System.The AccuGrade Global PositioningSystem (GPS) is the best solution whenthe construction site involves contours,rather than single or dual slope planes.A GPS system compares the bladeposition to a three-dimensionalcomputerized job site plan and signalsthe operator or hydraulic system toraise or lower the blade to achieve thedesign requirements.

GPS In-Cab Display. The in-cab displayprovides real-time operating informationto the operator. Designed for simpleoperation, the 140 mm (5.5 in) colorLCD daylight readable display withkeypad allows operators to easilyinterface with the system. Settings andviews can be easily configured accordingto operator preference. The display isdesigned for reliable performance inextreme operating conditions includingshock, dust and moisture.

Frame and Castings. The D6N case andframes are built to absorb high impactshock loads and torsional forces.Castings are strategically located withinthe frame to add additional strength.Caterpillar uses robotic weldingtechniques in the assembly of the caseand frames. This ensures quality andreliability throughout the structure.

Equalizer Bar. The pinned equalizer bargives the roller frames the ability tooscillate up or down to better matchground contours while providingmaximum traction and operator comfort.

Roll Over Protection. N-Series cabsupports have been stiffened. Stiffer cabsupports result in lower noise andvibration in the cab, providing theoperator increased comfort.

Quality and Reliability.

• 4 mm (0.16 in) sheet metal onthe side service access panels andrear guard.

• Stamped, rounded sheet metalcorners add strength.

• Rubber isolation mounted fuel tankeliminates tank vibration and reducespotential stress fractures.

SystemOne™ Undercarriage.Exclusively for Caterpillar machines thedesign extends system life and reducesoperating costs.

• Long-life Sprocket. Extended lifesprockets will outlast two or moretracks. The rotating bushingtechnology extends life.

• Guiding System. The guidingsystem contacts link rails instead ofpin ends and helps keep the trackwithin the roller system. The resultis improved track guiding.

• Rollers. The increased flangediameter on the rollers provideoptimum guiding and longer life.

• Carrier Rollers. Redesigned carrierrollers are factory sealed and servicedas a unit. The larger diameter providesextended wear to better matchundercarriage system life.

• Idlers. The center tread idlers contactonly the bushing – not the links –eliminating scalloping and providingmore guiding to the link assembly.The idlers last longer because itcontacts a rotating bushing insteadof a link rail.

• Cartridge Joints. Factory-sealedcartridge joints are laser welded tocontrol end play. They offer improvedseal integrity through an innovativenew sealing system and do notdepend on the link interface toremain sealed. As with all Catundercarriage products, they arefilled with special oils.

• May be used in any application

• The track roller frames are weldedand have a box section design,which provides strength andresistance to bending withoutadding extra weight

• The track adjuster and mechanicalrecoil spring and grease filledadjustment cylinder which allowsthe idler to move forward and backto maintain proper track tensionas it absorbs undercarriage shock

Undercarriage Arrangements.

XL (Extra Long) arrangement

• Forward idler position providesmore track on the ground and tothe front of the tractor. It providesoptimal balance, superior tractionand blade control for finish grading.

• Long roller frame provides goodflotation in soft underfootconditions.

LGP (Low Ground Pressure)arrangement

• Specially designed to work in softand spongy conditions.

• Wide track shoes, a longer trackframe and a wider gauge increasetrack contact area and reduce groundpressure for excellent flotation.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the trackroller frame. This prevents abrasivematerials from falling down onmoving parts.

Roller Frames. Roller frames aretubular, to resist bending and twisting.

• Roller frames attach to the tractor bya pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar.

Recoil System. The recoil system issuperior because it is protected fromthe elements and maintained in asealed, oil-filled cavity for years ofreliable service.

Oscillating Undercarriage. The pinnedequalizer bar is saddle-mounted beneaththe mainframe, allowing the roller framesand track to oscillate. The oscillationprovides a steady working platform andsmooth ride for the operator.

• Top corners of the blade are clippedfor better operator viewing area.(XL arrangement only).

• C-Frame is solidly pinned to themainframe for good blade controland eliminates blade motion due totrack oscillation or side forces.

• C-Frame to tractor joint is sealedand lubricated with remote linesfor extended service life and quietoperation.

• Large C-Frame tower bearings havebeen added to improve durability.

• Lubrication points are located atall pin joints to reduce wear.

VPAT Position – Blade Pitch.

• 54° – maximum blade loads andbest finish grading.

• 57.5° – good blade loads andgeneral dozing.

• 60-62° – maximum bladepenetration and reduced materialretention on blade.

Semi-Universal Blade (XL ArrangementOnly). Built for tough applicationswhere penetration and blade side loadingare important. The design of the SUblade makes it excellent for aggressivedirt penetration and loading materials.The blade wings are designed forsuperior load retention.

Built-in Serviceability. Less servicetime means more working time.Major components are designed asmodules and most can be removedwithout disturbing or removingother components.

Diagnostic Connector. Diagnosticconnector allows Caterpillar dealers toquickly troubleshoot the D6N or accessstored data with the use of ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET).

Diagnostics. Cat D6N diagnostic andtroubleshooting capabilities are amongthe best. Competitors monitoringsystems offer limited diagnosticcapabilities. The machine dashboardallows for quick identification ofproblems and its cause, utilizing athree level warning system.

Grouped Service Points andAccessibility. D6N machines have beendesigned with ease and simplicity ofservice in mind.

• Grouped pressure taps allow youto measure and troubleshoot thehydraulic system. Two groups ofremote taps are available, one inthe right hand fender and the secondbehind the transmission guard onthe rear of the machine.

• Hinged engine doors with mechanicalstops provide easy access to secondaryfuel filters, oil filters, engine oilfiller tube, engine air filter, and theA/C compressor.

• Left side enclosure access doorsprovide easy access to the batteries,transmission fill tube, fuse box,washer bottle, disconnect switch,transmission oil level, and machinesecurity system (optional).

• Right side enclosure access doorprovides easy access to the hydraulicoil filter and remote pressure taps.

Product Link. This system streamlinesdiagnostic efforts, downtime andmaintenance scheduling and costs byproviding communication flow of vitalmachine data and location informationbetween the dealer and the customer.Product Link provides updates on servicemeter hours, machine condition andmachine location.

Cat Machine Security System (MSS).MSS uses electronically coded keysselected by the customer to limit usageby individuals or time parameters.MSS deters theft, vandalism andunauthorized usage. Each machine systemcan store up to 255 keys and each keycan be used on as many machines asdesired. MSS can be controlled by aPersonal Data Assistant. Field installationis available.

Electronic Monitoring System. The D6Nfeatures a flexible monitoring systemthat is easily upgraded by flashingsoftware rather than replacing the module,reducing parts cost. As technologychanges and new electronics and softwarebecome available, the monitoringsystem will allow the machine to beeasily updated.

Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator (coolant) and the hydraulictank, and for the engine oil change.

Easy Engine Maintenance. Many partscan be rebuilt and are available asremanufactured components.

• Parent-metal block can be reboredtwice and dry-sleeved.

• Connecting rods can be removedthrough cylinder tops.

• Camshaft followers and push rodscan be replaced without removingcamshaft.

• Extended oil and engine filterchange intervals up to 500 hours.
