Torque Rise. The engine is designed forhigh torque rise at middle rpm, a featurethat is especially beneficial for heavy-duty use.
Automatic Engine Control. This three-stage control features a convenient one-touch command, maximizes fuelefficiency and reduces sound levels.
Maintenance. The oil level gauge, oilfilter, fuel filter and priming pump arelocated on the right side of the upperstructure for easy maintenance. Theengine oil filter and fuel filter changeintervals have been extended.
Crankshaft. Eight balance, one-piece,forged crankshaft enhances balance anddecreases vibration and is inductionhardened to improve abrasion resistance.
Pistons. Heat resistant aluminumalloy pistons have a short compressionheight, reducing weight and improvingefficiency.
Fuel Consumption. The 3046T enginehas the best fuel consumption in thisclass of diesel engines. It featuresimproved thermal efficiency andreduced friction resistance betweenpiston and liners.
Air Intake Heating. Air intake heatingis standard on the 315C for easiercold starts.

EngineThe six cylinder turbo-charged Cat 3046T engine is built for power, reliability, economy andlow emissions.
Component Layout. The 315C hydraulicsystem was designed to provide a highlevel of efficiency. With all majorcomponents located close together,shorter tubes and lines are needed,resulting in less friction loss in thelines and reduced pressure drops.
Hydraulic Cross-Sensing System.Improves productivity with fasterimplement speeds and quicker,stronger pivot turns.
Automatic Boom and Swing Priority.For simpler operation, work modeand power mode switches have beeneliminated. Instead, the automatic boomand swing priority function selects thebest mode, based on joystick movement.
Stackable Valves. Three types ofstackable valves and one independentvalve are available on the 315C andattached directly to the main controlvalve. Up to two stackable valves canbe used in combination with the maincontrol valve to provide a variety ofdifferent functions.
Boom and Stick Regeneration Circuit.The 315C uses a boom and stickregeneration circuit to save energyduring boom-down and stick-inoperation.
Controllability. The hydraulic systemoffers precise control to the 315C,reducing operator fatigue, improvingoperator effectiveness and efficiency,which ultimately translates into enhancedperformance.
Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve. The auxiliaryhydraulic valve is standard on the 315Cfor use with optional hydraulic circuits.
Hydraulic Snubbers. Hydrauliccylinder snubbers at the rod-end ofboom cylinders and both ends of thestick cylinders cushion shocks, reducesound and increase cylinder life.

HydraulicsCaterpillar hydraulics deliver power and control to keep material moving at high volume.
Structures. The 315C structuralcomponents and undercarriage are thebackbone of the machine’s durability.
Carbody Design and Track Roller Frames.X-shaped, box-section carbody providesexcellent resistance to torsional bending.Robot-welded track roller frames arepress-formed, pentagonal units to deliverexceptional strength and service life.
Rollers and Idlers. Sealed and lubricatedtrack rollers, carrier rollers and idlersprovide excellent service life, to keepthe machine in the field longer.
Main Frame. The rugged main frame isdesigned for maximum durability andefficient use of materials.
Grease Lubricated Track. New greaselubricated seals protect the track linkand deliver long track link pin andbushing inner wear life.
Travel Motors. Automatic speedselection enables the machine toautomatically change up and downfrom high and low speeds in a smooth,controlled manner.
Idler Guard. An idler guard, whichis integral to the track roller frame,is standard. This guard helps maintaintrack alignment while traveling orworking on slopes.

Undercarriage and StructuresDurable undercarriage absorbs stresses and provides excellent stability.
Front Linkage. Front linkage variationson the 315C allow for the use of oneboom, three sticks and two bucket-types(excavation and heavy-duty rock).Using these combinations improvesthe general-purpose versatility of the315C by suiting it to a diverse rangeof applications.
Boom. The boom on the 315C isdesigned to provide maximum diggingcapability. Caterpillar booms aremanufactured with high-tensile steelfor upper, lower and side plates andare robot welded for consistent quality.
Stick. Three sticks are available on the315C. The customer’s working envelopeand bucket capacity needs determinetheir stick choice.
Boom and Stick Construction. Builtfor performance and long service life,Caterpillar booms and sticks are large,welded, box-section structures withthick, multi-plate fabrications in high-stress areas.
Buckets. High tensile strength steel isused in high-stress areas for excellentwear and shock resistance. The sideplates are tapered to prevent contact ofthe bucket sidewalls during trenchingoperations.
Bucket Linkage. The bucket linkage onthe 315C includes the bucket cylinder,idler link and power links.
Bucket Flop Adjustment Mechanism.All 300 family excavator buckets areequipped with a bucket flop adjustmentmechanism which allows the operatoror serviceman to reduce the side playat the bucket to stick-nose connection.
Linkage Bearings. New bearingtechnology has extended the frontlinkage greasing intervals forall bearings.

Operator Environment. The 315Coperator work station is quiet withergonomic control placement andconvenient adjustments, low leverand pedal effort, ergonomic seatdesign and highly efficient ventilation.
Monitor. New, compact monitorenhances viewing while displaying avariety of easy-to-read and understandlanguage-based information.
Automatic Boom and Swing PriorityFunction. For simpler operation, workmode and power mode switches havebeen eliminated. Instead, the automaticboom and swing priority functionselects the best mode, based onjoystick movement.
Auxiliary Hydraulics. Five hydraulicpump flows can be preset on themonitor, eliminating the need to adjustthe flow every time a tool is changedand instantly providing the operatorwith the correct amount of flow foreach tool. This feature is available withcertain optional auxiliary hydraulicconfigurations.
Redesigned Layout. Redesigned cablayout emphasizes simplicity and easeof use. Right-hand wall and consoleprovides easy access to all switches,dials and controls.
Travel Controls. A large rubber-coveredfootrest at the side of the travel pedalsallows the foot to easily grip the pedal.The travel lever stroke and force havebeen enhanced to improve the 315C’sfine controllability, making the machineeasier to operate.
Seat. A new seat with a two-tone coloroffers two types of cushions - soft andfirm - for operator comfort. The recliningknob is located at the right-side of theseat for easier reclining adjustment.
Automatic Climate Control. Fullyautomatic climate control adjuststemperature and flow and determineswhich air outlet is best in each situation.
Skylight. A large polycarbonate skylightdelivers excellent natural lighting andgood ventilation. Standard slidingsunshade protects from direct sunlight.

Operator StationDesigned for simple operation, the 315C operator station allows the operator to focuson production.
Extended Service Intervals. 315Cservice and maintenance intervalshave been extended to reduce machineservice time and increase machineavailability.
Radiator Compartment. The left rearservice door allows easy access to theengine radiator and the hydraulic oilcooler, which are side by side, and thehigh performance compact air-to-airaftercooler (ATAAC). Ample spacebetween the ATAAC and the radiator/cooler is provided to allow accessfor cleaning.
Air Filter Compartment. The air filterfeatures a double-element constructionfor superior cleaning efficiency. When theair cleaner plugs, a warning is displayedon the monitor screen inside the cab.
Ground Level Service. The design andlayout of the 315C was made with theservice technician in mind. Many servicelocations are easily accessible at groundlevel allowing critical maintenance toget done quickly and efficiently.
Swing-Out Condenser. The airconditioner condenser swings outhorizontally for cleaning access.
Pump Compartment. A service dooron the right side of the upper structureallows ground-level access to the pumpand pilot filter.
Capsule Filter. The hydraulic returnfilter, a capsule filter, is situated insidethe hydraulic tank but is easily accessedfrom outside the tank. This filter preventscontaminants from entering the systemwhen hydraulic oil is changed andkeeps the operation clean.
Anti-Skid “Punched-Star” Plate.Anti-skid punched-star plate coversthe top of the storage box and upperstructure to prevent slipping duringmaintenance. The plate can be removedfor cleaning.
Engine Inspection. Engine can beaccessed from the upper structure orfrom under the machine. The engineand pump compartment are separatedby a steel wall.
