Bring University and the local community awareness to appreciate the petroleum industry and for

Planned Activities

1. Technical/Educational Activities:

a. SPE School: (200 students in 7 classes)

Description & objective:

Full-year technical and skills program which is working in parallel with the acadmeic year. Its

Objective is to graduate quafilied engineers have good practical experience in the oil field, and

good vision for the petroleum industry.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: 6-10 sessions from October 2012 to March 2013. (3 hours per session)

b. Paper Contest: ( 50 students)

Description & objective:

The paper contest is a competition held by the SPE among students. The students are asked to

do a research to find a solution for a practical problem in the petroleum industry or about any of

the latest technologies in the Petroleum industry. The subject of a paper must be related to

petroleum engineering, which is defined as the application of basic and engineering sciences to the

finding, development, and recovery of oil, gas, and other resources from wells. The researches

made have to be focusing on issues concerned with the future of E&P industries.

SPE CUSC organize a sessions to provide the participants with the needed skills to participate in

such an event. Also SPE CUSC totally organizes the Local & North Africa contests.

Local Paper contest:

Students will be invited to apply to this competition which help the students to search in a

subject related to the industry and may considered as a new technology research and the 3

winners will nominated to participate in the North Africa paper contest and then to Middle East

paper contest.

c. R & D Program: (50 Students)

Description & objective:

R&D Program is a class that will prepare participants to the SPE Student Paper Contest 2013; it

will be held in parallel with SPE School and consists from 4-5 sessions.

Also it helps the participants in increasing their knowledge in petroleum industry and mainly

enhancing research and development culture among them in different topics which are related to

oil and gas industry, in addition to improving their abilities such observation, studying, making

assumptions, critical thinking, analyzing, concluding and finally reaching to solutions/applications.

R&D Program serve and enhance Self-learning skills which one of SPE-CUSC values, so it will

qualify participants to start their career lives earlier and facing real issues, searching about them

and trying to solve them which serve Professionalism, Innovation and Creativity we seek to.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: 4 sessions from October 2012 to November 2012. (3-5 hours per session)

d. Simulation : (200 Students)

Description & objective:

This Simulation is the first Technical Simulation to be fully planned, organized, and held by

students of SPE-Cairo University Student Chapter. This simulation aims to reduce the gap between

the Academic life and the Practical life by giving the students the ability to form imaginary

companies for each a technical real-life case study will be assigned and the students will be

required to work on it and find a solution based on what they have been taught throughout the

sessions of SPE School Technical Classes.

What really distinguishes this technical-business platform is that it will not only give the ability to

the students to practice their technical knowledge and use it to solve real-life case studies ,but also

it will give them the ability to work in a professional work environment in which they are required

to work in teams following professional organizational behaviours to achieve certain objectives,

then they will be required to present their work in public and the achievements of each team will

be evaluated by a committee formed of professors from Cairo University and professionals from

different Oil & Gas Companies.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: It’s expected to be held in the last week of March, 2013 and it will be a four-Day program.

e. Technical Magazine:

Description & objective:

Written and edited articles by academic professors, industry professional and skilful students

targeting petroleum students and industry makers concerning the petroleum industry.

f. Safety Awareness Program:

Description & objective:

Series of Safety awareness sessions and workshops that aims to increase the awarness of the

students towards the safety in the Industrial life and its importance.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: All over the Season.

g. SPE CUSC Mentoring Program:

Description & objective:

SPE CUSC Mentoring Program will the first of its kind in Egypt, where an engineer from the O&G

Industry will mentor a group of 3 students from the Third & Fourth year; where he will help them

in their academic life, try to deliver his experience to them, and finally help them in finding the

suitable job in their specialization.

Duration: All over the Season.

h. SPE CUSC Study Groups Program:

Description & objective:

SPE CUSC STUDY GROUPs Program aims in the first place to share technical knowledge between

each group members, also to refresh their technical knowledge and keep it up to date with the

latest technologies in Oil and Gas industry. In addition to supporting team-working and

communication skills; and in the same time richen the base of researching and analyzing.

Each group will consist of 5 members maximum, and they will be asked to study a certain subject

and share it with other groups.

After that, if this program proved its success, we can expand it to contain technical session where

each group will have the chance to present and disseminate its work with all petroleum

department students. Finally, the best group will be awarded in SPE CUSC closing.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: All over the Season.

i. SPE Trivia:

Description & objective:

SPE Trivia is a competition that evaluates the competitors according to their information

about petroleum history, general knowledge, technical knowledge, and science facts.

It’s held between all the chapter’s of Egypt.

Place: Any of the universities of Egypt Section.

Duration: It’s expected to be held in the Summer Vacation, and it will be a One-Day program.

j. PetroBowl:

Description & objective:

A College Bowl-style student competition organized in order to bring together the most

outstanding students from Universities around the Middle East and North Africa Region where

competing teams are challenged to answer both technical and non technical questions related to

the Petroleum industry as well as getting the opportunity to network, exchange knowledge,

develop relationships and establish partnerships.

The balance of the questions challenges the engineering skills of the students while at the same

time fostered an interest in the unique and rich history of our industry.

Place: Any of the universities of Egypt Section.

Duration: It’s expected to be held in the Mid-Year Vacation, and it will be a One-Day program.

k. North Africa Technical Conference “NATC”:

Participation & organizing the NATC which is considered as the most important technical

conference in O&G industry that is held in Egypt

Place: InterContinental Citystars Hotel.

Duration: It’s expected to be held in February, 2013.

l. Soft Skills Workshops : (50 Students)

Description & objective:

It’s workshops that aim to maximize the soft skills of the participants through a group of

activities that lead them toward a better performance in their life.

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: 8 sessions from October 2012 to April 2013. (4 hours per session)

m. Monthly Section Meetings: ( 30 per meeting)

Attend monthly section meetings that are organized by SPE Egyptian section (about 8 meetings).

n. Field Trips: (100 Students)

Organizing of field trips with the cooperation of different petroleum Companies.

o. SPE CUSC Facebook Page Daily Question’s Contest:

Posting a question in the petroleum industry or General Knowledge daily on the SPE CUSC facebook

pages, and awarding the winner each month.

Place: SPE CUSC Facebook pages.

Duration: All over the Season.

g. Open Session and Seminar: (600 Students)

Open sessions related to certain technology aspects for nearly 600 students.

p. Open Advanced skills and personal development Courses:

It’s a variety of courses which aims to develop specific skill in the participants like marketing,

organization behaviour, etc …

Place: Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.

Duration: 10-12 sessions from January 2013 to April 2013. (4 hours per session)

2. University/Community Activities:

a. Orientation for Non-Petroleum Students: (100 students)

An introduction to petroleum industry and the basics of the industry will be explained to the

students from non-petroleum departments to support them after graduation and to support them

to work in the industry inside and outside Cairo University.

b. SPE Book Stores: (300 students)

Provide references, scientific papers, technical magazines…..etc.

The main purpose is to disseminate technical knowledge, enrich technical knowledge of technical

committee to help them in writing magnificent articles for both; technical and wall magazines.

Also we can use it as a funding resource; so we can offer our books for a certain period with

considering a symbolic price.

Also we can extend this idea to serve iRead project, Reading club……etc. So we can offer non-

technical topics (not related to petroleum industry) and activate our programs, also serving our

community in the same time.

c. Nomination for IIE Program: (50 students)

Institute of International Education has great programs and we asked every season to nominate

50 students to participate in Discovery Leadership Program.
