Spartan Families,
As you read this we are in the process of registering students for classes for the 2018-2019 school year. Once we register students, I make staffing decisions based on the courses we will offer, based on student choices. Once that is done, class changes can only happen if we have the classes and staffing. Thus every year, we tell some students and parents no to change requests. NOT because we don’t want to, but rather because we cant. It is your responsibility to choose your courses wisely and commit to them. If anyone has questions or concerns with this, you should contact me personally to discuss.
March 22 is our rising 9th grade activity expo, and Spring
break starts on the 26th.
Many of our seniors will participate in meaningful internships and projects this May-June. From working at our feeder schools to opportunities in International Security, this is a great opportunities for our seniors and I believe a integral part of the direction of secondary education.
If you would like to be more involved in BRHS as a parent, please email me so we can discuss opportunities.

English—Read-In
On February 22nd, in honor of black history month, Broad Run’s English Department and chapter of National English Honor Society hosted the school’s 4th annual African American Read-In.
As the guests settled into their seats in the auditorium and the lights dimmed, the program began. The event began with a recitation of the Black National Anthem. Following the anthem, and an opening by one of the English teachers, Tilly Blanding, a local community leader, sang Wade in the Water, and encouraged the audience to sing along as well. Her voice rang through the auditorium and settled in our ears. Shortly after her beautiful performance, the Broad Run’s Step Team, Tri-umphant, danced grandly. Each step filled the air with empowerment. Each call impressed the audience. They were truly stellar.
Mrs. Michele Evans, the coordinator for the event and an English teacher at Broad Run, introduced the main guest speaker, Brooke C. Obie. Mrs. Obie began by talking about her journey. As a child, she craved for the praise of those around her. She wanted to do something amazing, so that she could leave a positive influence on society. She de-cided to become the first female, African-American Supreme Court Jus-tice. She would eventually go to law school at Mercer University where she was the Eleventh Circuit Survey Editor for the Mercer Law Review. Obie mentioned that while she was at Mercer University, she worked on several cases. For example, she worked on the defense team for the U.S. vs. Harris case. Obie said that while working on those cases, she realized that this wasn’t the way she wanted to change the world. She would eventually come upon writing fiction again after a long time. Obie read a few pages of her book, Book of Addis: Cradled Embers, to the audience. Her words resounded within the auditorium as we were brought into the world of Addis. Those few pages left us wanting more of the empowering book about a girl escaping her en-slaver.
The program then transitioned so that students and teachers would share their original pieces, and the work of some African-Americans whom they enjoy. There were poems, musical performances, and excerpts from books- all of which were amazing. The students, and teachers truly displayed their emotions during the entire program. Finally, the event ended the way it began with the Broad Run chorus singing Wade in the Water.
It was an outstanding night. Voices echoed throughout the auditorium as the students and staff paint-ed beautiful, and vivid images into our minds. The food, which was served after the program, melted into our mouths leaving us craving for more. That night, tears and laughter roamed the halls of Broad Run.

CTE—In the Field
Airport Safety & Security
On February 1st, there was a field trip to Dulles Airport to experience, meet and see the Safety and Security components of an airport. Deputy Mi-chael Peck (BRHS School Resource Office) orga-nized this trip for the students. Students had the opportunity to see TSA, emergency services, air-port offices and canine officers. As part of the field trip, students wrote letters of appreciate to the service members and provided dog treats and
toys for the canine officers.
Aviation Careers
On February 15th, there was a another field trip to Dulles Airport for students enrolled in Career Technology class to experience avia-tion careers. Deputy Michael Peck (BRHS School Resource Of-fice) organized this trip for the students. Students had the oppor-tunity to see a wide range of opportunity. There was a visit to the tower ramp where students saw the men and women working with the airport operations. Another part of the trip was to visit the active Air Traffic Controller Tower. Here students saw first hand how the control-lers monitor and organize planes from the gate to the sky. Students had the chance to ask questions and see the work
