How to find our Gardens -

As mentioned in the Introduction to this catalogue we have shifted our Iris Gardens to Putiki.

Coming along the motorway from the South turn sharp right immediately before the Cobham Bridge (the road to the left goes to the Airport). Then follow the road for a few chains to the corner of Lynch's Lane on the right where our sign is being erected. Our gardens are a very short distance along this Lane. Please drive right in as we have allowed an area for parking on bur own property.

Coming from the north, cross the Town Bridge at the lower end of Victoria Avenue, turn right and continue along the river bank for about half a mile when a small valley opens up between the hills on your left. Our sign will be seen at the corner of Lynch's Lane, which runs up this valley a short way.

Infroducf ion

We would draw our friends and customers attention to the fact that we have changed our address from last season and have now established our plantings permanently at Putiki. Directions for visiting us and viewing our irises on display will be found on the opposite page.

It is with pleasure that we are in a position this year to offer no fewer than five novelties of Mrs. Stevens' raising, varieties which have proved not only outstanding performers but which are decided acquisitions from a colour point of view. Members of the N.Z. Iris Society will recall one of these novelties in the beautiful Sparkling Seas which was a guest iris at Masterton last year and which was universally popular.

As promised in our 1964-65 catalogue we are offering again a selection of the new standard varieties which were withdrawn to allow us to build up stocks which had been depleted.

Last, but not least, we are okjering this season not only a much greater selection of new Lilliputs and Median irises, but also a selection of Table lrises - a class which is becoming increasingly popular not only for its garden value but also for its particular usefulness for home decoration.

The New Zealand Iris Sociefy Soon after you receive this catalogue the New Zealand Iris

Society will be holding its Annual Meeting. This year the Society is meeting at Rotorua. The Society was started in 1949 with relatively few members, but such has been its appeal and popularity that the menlbership has increased steadily over the years until today the Society is strong both numerically and financially. Most of the members arc New Zealand iris lovers scattered all over the country from Northland to the Bluff, many being gardeners in country areas to whom the arrival of the Bulletin is an eventto look forward to. There are also quite a number of overseas members who have joined to get the Society's Brsllctins. The Society issues these very attractive and educative Rdletins three times a year, in Sep- tember, March and June. An Annual Meeting is held, each year in a different district, and is always well attended. In addition to an interesting programme of lectures and visiting various iris gardens, the meeting constitutes a splendid opportunity to meet other people whose hobby is irises. We therefore suggest that if you grow irises at all, whether Bearded Irises or the species, you will get far more pleasure out of them by belonging to the Society.

The Secretary-Treasurer is Mr. 1. C. Bell, Iris Place, Wanganui. Subscriptions may be sent direct to the Secretary- Treasurer unless you are taking advantage of our offer of a free iris, when the subscription should be sent to us for forwarding.

To those not already members our SPECIAL OFFER this year is a free plant of ROCOCO or MUTED MUSIC or if your order with us is £5 or over, you may elect to have a free plant of our lovely novelty SPARKLlNG SEAS in place of either Rococo or Muted Music. The free plant is available to anyone, not already a member of the Society, who is ordering irises from us, if the subscription for the Society of 151- is enclosed with the order.

These irises are worth 301- and are described in this catalogue.

T E R M S Every order will receive personal care and attention but, owing

to the amount of work this entails, we cannot accept orders of under $1 in value. All orders are post free, if accompanied by cash, to any address in New Zealand. Postage, packing, and the obtain- ing of a health certificate for overseas orders will be at cost.

All cheques and money orders should be made out to WANGANUT IRISES. Orders can be sent from the end of November until the end of April. We do not despatch after the end of April, and orders received after that date will be held until the new season commences.

Culfural Notes Cultural notes in a catalogue are necessarily 11rief. Gardeners

who would like more detailed information on growing irises jn special conditions, and the treatments of diseases, are advised to get a copy of The Iris and Its Culture, where the sul~jects a re fully dealt with.

Bearded Irises are perfectly hardy plants and can be success- fully grown in any soil provided only that i t is well drained. They should be planted in full sunlight, as the rhizomes require al l the sun they can get. A dry situation is also an advantage. Estaldished plants OI Bearded Irises should never be watered in any part of New Zealand, thongh newly shifted plants may he watered in a dry season. This watering sliould be discontinued as soon as gro~vth commences. In very sandy soil irises nmy I)e watered when very dry until the flowering season. Bearded Irises are lime loving plants, and in most soils a good dressing of lime s l~ould be given every winter. In soils where hydrangeas throw pink flowers without treatment lime is not needed. In reasonably good garden soil no manure other than superphosphate is required, 11ut where the soil is poor or worked out, garden compost may with advantage be added. In extremely poor light soil well rottcd animal manure may I)e worked in before planting, 11ut we strongly advise gardeners not to use organic manure in ordinary garden soil. The use of organic manure where the soil is reasonably good will he really damaging, and is oEten the cause of leal spot and failure 01 the plants to flower. Where leal spot is troaljlesomc extra l i n ~ e should be given in winter, and several light dressings of potash given about August. Plant the rhizomes very firmIy, with the lop of the rhizomes showing ubore the ground in heavy soils, and just barely covcrcd in light soils. In very heavy or damp soils planting in raised beds has two important advantages. I t improves the drainage and by preventing the soil setting makes weeding very much easier. The addition of sand to the soil also assists in this direction.

Plants should be given at least 18 inches space each way if it is desired to make a I~ed ol them. In the case 01 replanting in clumps they may 11e set in 8 inches apart, provided ample space is allowed outside the proposed rlump. Needless to say, clumps should 11e made np of a single variety.

Generally alter irises have been planted three to four years the clunips will have inc~reased so much that the soil around thcm will have become impoverished. The clumps should then Ile lilted and divided, preIerably in early P)ccember. The inside rhizomes without mut*h leal growth should be Ixoken ofl and thro~vn away. Plant I m k in well dug ground the strong Inns ol outside growth. Dig in a healy dressing of superphosphate I~elove planting in a ncw position.

IJeceml~er is the best monll~ of the year for planting, and we send out plants when we can in that month, I ~ u t planting may be donc in any month from early December until the end of April.

We do not send out planls belween the end at' April and the end of November.

Novelties, 1965-66 (The name of the raiser is given in brackets)

BLUE BARON (Schreiner, U.S.A.) This massive marine blue self has huge size, opulent ruffled

form, superb candelabrum branching and great vigour. It has been acclaimed by judges throughout America as one of the finest irises ever seen. Besides the unusual colour the exceptional branching is instantly singled out - often a total of 15 to 18 buds on a n individual stem. This iris is destined for immense popularity and bids fair to become the standard by which new varieties will be judged for years to come. H.M., A.I.S. 39 ft. 501-

BRILLIANT SUNRISE (Stevens) We have at last a brilliant clear coloured variegata, broad

petalled and smooth hafted, combining colour, height and size, to take the place of the smaller flowered old favourite Staten Island. Broad standards of a rich clear gold and falls of an even, deep brownish red make a clump of this variety stand out vividly in any collection. A strong grower and excellent branching. Easily the finest variegata we have ever seen. 35ft. 421 - HONEYBIRD (Schreiner, U.S.A.)

A rich, golden honey coloured iris of a large size, leathery substance and magnificent branching from the most outstanding breeder of the latest and best browns, tans and golden blends during recent years. Falls are actually about three inches broad. A superb and stalwart iris with a touch of ruffling and a gold dust sheen. H.M. A.I.S. 39 ft. 421 - LAUGHING LASS (Stevens)

Few irises have greater personality than this gay, lilting, ruffled beauty. A large broad petalled, entrancingly ruffled flower, of an even smooth pure apricot. with a vivid red beard. A strong grower, excellent branching and very free-flowering. A real and distinct acquisition. 3 ft. 421-

SPARKLING SEAS (Stevens) Bred from the self coloured Foaming Seas and the lovely

Amoenas of Paul Cook's Progenitor strain, this iris is outstanding in any garden. A huge flower with beautifully held standards of blue toned white, merging through a pale haft and beard to a rich toned medium blue fall, ruffled and beautifully flared. Tall and well branched this lovely new variety is destined for long popular- ity. Pleasing in its soft yet rich colour combination Sparkling Seas has all the virtues of vigour and free-flowering habits. 4 ft. 421-

SUNSET SNOWS (Stevens) Here is a sensational new colour combination which Mrs.

Stevens has developed from her original pink Amoena strains. Beautifully held, waxen white standards contrast harmoniously with flared and ruffled falls of a warm cocoa toned pink enlivened by a red beard. This completely new colour combination is truly sensational, charming, novel - and crowd-stopping. An iris which makes one wonder if there will ever be any end to the extent and range of colours and colour combinations which may be bred into irises. A very lovely novelty we are proud to introduce. 23 ft. 50/ -

OPAL SHEEN (Stevens) A clean, wonderfully smooth, even coloured silver-lilac with

a quiet beard, this distinct and new pastel toned flower is large, of excellent substance and with a lovely glistening texture. Quite unlike any of the other orchid toned irises owing to its silver over- tones it yet belongs to that colour class. A lovely iris harmonising in any colour scheme. 3 ft . 421-

AMETHYST FLAME (Schreiner, U.S.A.) From the curiously neglected colour range between lavender

and light violet comes this arresting beauty. Imagine an iris the blue-lavender colour of the common lilac overlaid with a soft pink sheen and you have colour of Amethyst Flame. The shoulders of the falls are flushed chestnut and the beard is an inconspicuous white. The individual blooms are huge and gorgeously ruffled, abounding in highlights like a many-faceted amethyst. With tall, well-branched stems, rugged constitution and heavily substanced blooms it quickly proved its worth in America by winning an Honourable Mention in 1958, its year introduction. and an Award of Merit in 1960. This culminated in the award of the Dykes Medal in 1963. 3 fl. 1216

ANTHEM (Schreiner, U.S.A.) A huge iris with rounded form and candelabrum branching.

The richness of its fuchsia-purple colouring is intensified by a generous margin of bronze around the plushy, flaring falls, with a subtle tint of the same bronze in the taffeta-like standards. Lemon beard. A picture of dignity and grace, H.M. 1960. 34 ft. 716

ARAB1 PASHA (Anley, England) This lovely deep rich blue won the English Dykes Medal in

1953. Not only has the clear, clean colour a sharp distinction from other blues, but the form of the flower is unique. The standards and falls are almost circluar, so wide are they at the hafts, and the effect is enhanced by their lovely gracious ruffling. The size of the bloom is in beautiful balance with the unusually broad and generous foliage. A.M. 1956. D.M. British 1953. 21 6

BELLE MEADE (Wills, U.S.A.) An outstanding blue plicata like a much improved Blue

Shimmer - refreshing clear blue embellished on a gleaming white background. A large iris of classic allure and good branching with the clarity and freshness that marks recent plicata breeding, and with a light ruffling adding a touch of grace. H.M. 1953. 3 ft. 51-

BELLERIVE (Benson, U.S.A.) A rich cream iris noteworthy for its finely chiselled form and

the extra well-substanced petals, so thick textured they are com- pletely opaque. Very large flowers, of beautifully flared and semi- ruffled form. H.M. 1950. 3) ft. 316

BLACK BELLE (Stevens) A wonderful bloom of richest black velvet given light and life

by a ruby overcast. The rounded falls are fully Rared to the horizontal, and have a dark beard. Both standards and falls are of really exceptional substance, waxen thick in the standards, frozen velvet in the falls. ldeal for the front of the iris border, and able to withstand both wind and rain. Late. 2+ft. 216

BLACK HILLS (Fay. U.S.A.) A nicely proportioned blue black with a lovely smooth texture.

There is real character about this smooth black with its intensifi- cation of colour depth on the upper part of the falls. Another feature which sets it apart from most other blacks is its height of 33ft.. making it very suhdble for background planting, a virtue missing from many black varieties. A.M. 1954. 316

BLACK ONYX (Schreiner, U.S.A.) With taffeta-like blue-black standards and velvety violet-black

falls, Black Onyx makes a valuable addition to this colour group. Beautifully domed standards and broad flaring falls with self-toned beard. Jaunty, flaring form, generous size and good branching. H.M. 1960. 3 ft. 716

BLACK TAFFETA (Songer, U.S.A.) A satin finished black purple, including the beard. The wide

hafts are smooth, the entire flower nicely ruffled giving the flower great charm. A.M., A.I.S. 2 ft. 9 ins. 51-

BLACK SWAN (Fay, U.S.A.) At last - a black iris with everything! Slowly over the years

iris breeders have been improving this colour class, building up height and size of bloom until the "blacks" could hold up their heads in any company and Black Swan may well remain the criterion of this class for many years. Huge blooms of ruffled black velvet stand tall on well branched stems with excellent petal substance, vigorous, free flowering - this is indeed the black iris you have been looking for -plant it now to oflset those beautiful lighter tones. A.M. 1962. 3 ft. 21 /-

BLUEBIRD BLUE (Fay, U.S.A.) A cross between Helen McGregor and Caholtia, two excellent

blues in their own right, has given us a flower of classic proportions. A most pleasing shade of lovely light blue, large and non-fading - a fine garden blue of great merit. H.M. 1954. 3 ft. 51-

BLUE SAPPHIRE (Sclireiner, U.S.A.) A delightfully different pale blue with the colour soft and even

over the whole flower. Tall. strong stems carry the large fully ruffled blooms wit41 extreme grace and poise. The beard, where it extends onto the fall, is the same soft blue as the rest of the flower. Very broad standards and falls increase the flow of the deep ruff- ling, giving a cascade-like effect. Dykes Medal 1958. 4 ft. 3/6

BRASS ACCENTS (Schreiner, U.S.A.) In recent years wc have been treated to a run of excellent irises

with Inca Chief parentage from this breeder, and this magnificent golden con'ee-brown can be regarded as the leader by far among the many beautiful brown irises now available. A self except for a burnished haft, the flaring form and casual ruBling, the regal carriage, that something that gives a "finished" look - these all combine in an iris that will stand out in any company. Velvety smooth and with heavy substance, the huge flowers are shown to perfection on extra tall and well branched stems - a first class background plant. Excellent increaser. A.M. 1961. 33 ft. 151-

BRILLIANT SUNRISE (Stevens) See Novelties, page 4

BROADWAY STAR (Schreiner, U.S.A.) A unique and beautiful rose and cream bicolour, this iris has

opulent classic form, ideal height and branching, and generous size. The standards are a warm cream white, while the rounded falls are a rich light rose. It is a refreshingly different combination which is not only lovely in itself. but combines well in any colour schen~e. H.M. 1957. 34 ft. 716

BRONZE BELL (Schreiner, U.S.A.) A rich reddish brome gaining a n~etallic lustre from the play

of golden iridescence over its petal surface. A massive flower of excellent broad-hafted form, very well branched and free flowering,

ll1is novelty from the raiser of such fine irises as Blue Sapphire and ~ l y r n p i c Torch has already captured the eye of the judges in the United States. Distinct, richly colourful and a vigorous grower, it will quickly become a favourite in this country. A.M. 1959. 3 ft. patent NO. 1728. 716

CALDRON (Schreiner, U.S.A.) An exceptionally vivid copper-red self of good size and fine

height. Good branching - so scarce in reds - sets it above older varieties in this colour group. A vigorous increaser and one that has proved a good breeder for red seedlings. 3 ft. 1716

CARMELA (Schreiner, U.S.A.) One of the new developments in the States is the lace-edged

petals of the crinkled irises. In these the edges of the standards and falls are not only finely serrated but also have a fine pattern of lace-like crimping edging the otherwise smooth petals. The effecl is both delicate and entrancing. Carmela is a large and lovely flower of a soft hwny-pink bronze. The flowers have good sub- stance despite their light and airy appearance, and the plant has vigour and constitution. A delightful flower which will hold you spell-bound when the first lovely bloom unfolds. A.M. 1958. 39 El.

51-

CARNIVAL SPIRIT (Stevens) A new colouring quite unlike any we have seen before - an

orchid pink blend so deep and clear as to be almost blue-violet. While some of the richer hued irises seem heavy and dull, Carnival Spirit is saved from this by the addition of a tangerine beard so vivid and brilliant (and so unexpected in a flower of this colouring) that the whole bloom seems to be glowing from within. The pertly flared and heavy-textured bloon~s stand out in profusion on tall and well-branched stems. This variety is a very fast increaser and the effect of a second or third year clump in full bloom is breath- taking. 33 ft. 5 / -

CELESTIAL SNOW (Bro. Charles, U.S.A.) Heavy ruffling is the hallmark of this beautiful, cool while

iris - ruKling that extends completely around both standards and falls, giving a light, billowing effect. Large blooms are set on well branched stems - standards domed and falls broad and stiffly

flaring. The beard is while with just a touch of lemon. This truly outstanding white will thrill you with its chaste, patrician beauty. A.M. 1959. Runner-up Dykes Medal 1961, 1962 and 1963. 3 ft.

2716

CLIFFS OF DOVER (Fay, U.S.A.) A large white of great substance. The blooms are ruffled and

flared and are carried on strong, well branched stems. A certain chalky opaqueness which suggested the name gives a white of unusual intensity. Lemon beard. A good strong grower and increaser. A.M. 1955. 3 ft. 3 1 6

CLOTH OF GOLD (Whiting, U.S.A.) Clear, even, bright deep golden yellow. Nice flaring form,

heavy substance, widely branched stem. The perfect trim form is accentuated by the glowing orange beard. 33 ft. 21 6

CLOUD CAP (De Forest, U.S.A.) A lovely flamingo pink with enormously large blooms and

tall stems. For many years size and height eluded the breeder of the true pink irises, but today pinks can be had with flowers as large as irises of any other colour, and with stems up to four feet. The colour of Cloud Cap i s a soft even true pink, the petals are broa9 and full, and the plant is an ewellent grower and increaser. A.M. 1953. 4 ft. 2/6

CRINKLED IVORY (Schreiner, U.S.A.) A huge flower of sparkling ivory-cream with a cool lemon

flush at the heart adding to its translucent charm. Although the vcry broad standards and falls are of excellent crisp substance, thc translucent, crepy, lacquered texture lends an air of fragile grace. H.M. 1959. 3 ft, 12/6

CRINKLED LILAC (Schreiner. U.S.A.) Lovely form, exquisite petal lexture and rich and delicate

colours have long been accepted as characteristic of the iris. Of recent years many breeders have striven for a new beauty - the beauty of petal edge - such as the delicate texture edging which is called "lace" or "crinkling", The famous Carmela was the first of this new race of irises, and of more recent years has been followed

by other irises exhibiting this gracel'ul, almost feminine, delicacy of line. Crinkled Lilac is one of the irises exhibiting this trait, this time shown in a flower of soft orchid-toned lilac. A self-coloured flower with a silky taffeta-like sheen. 3 ft. 716

CRISPETTE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) Of ideal form this broadly proportioned colour gem, whose

fluted petals and lacy edging create a liking, billowy effecl, is somewhat similar to Lavanesque in its deep orchid colouring. This is a colour which is invaluable in landscape effect, carrying as a bold pink. It is also a colour which adds life to any flower arrange- ment. A.M. 1957. 23 ft. 316

CRYSTAL (Knowlton, U.S.A.) For many years one of the favourites all over the world was

Snow Flurry, the lovely rualed icy-blue white, which many iris lovers continue to grow despite its obvious faults of crowded over- lapping blossoms, wcak standards. and its tendency to soft rot. In Crystal we have a large, lovelier Snow Flurry, without any of Snow Flurry's faults. Graciously ruffled, its sparkling crystal texture and waxen substance have given us an iris it is a delight to grow. An icy-blue white of supreme beauty. H.M. 1956. 3 ft. $ 1 -

DAWN REFLECTION (Stevens) A very lovely pink plicata which has two virtues which few

plicatas possess, garden value as a clump, and a soft pink colour tone. The ground colour is ivory with the margins of the flaring falls softly stitched in pink. The waved standards are richly flushed and stitched rose pink. 3+ ft. 2/6

DRUM MAJOR (Douglas, U.S.A.) A broad roundly formed rose-red. The falls have a velvety

texture, and the smooth colouring of the entire flower even to the red coloured styles, gives an overall deep rose-red effect. Very free-flowering and showy. 39 ft, 216

EMMA COOK (Cook, U.S.A.) Named for the wife of this noted breeder, this variety presents

a new colour pattern in an iris - a chaste white flower of queenly grace, a self but for a half-inch band of lavender-blue applied

solidly to the edge of the falls like a halo. Strikingly different, the crisp flaring blooms with their eye-catching colouration will make an exciting talking-point in any garden. A.M. 1961. 3 ft. 15/-

ENCOUNTER (Benson, U.S.A.) A margin of softly flushed yellow on soft cream falls which

pale to white at the haft characterises this large yellow-cream iris. This is an iris of a colouring much needed to give life to the rich tones of many other varieties. H.M., A.M. 1959. 34 ft. 10/6

FAIRY FRILLS (Stevens) A beautiful iris which has taken Pinnacle's clean colouring

and combined it with frilled standards and falls, bring a com- pletely new and captivating flower to our gardens. Both standards and falls are fully ruffled, the former purest white and the latter a lovely light yellow, an ensemble of charm and fresh clean grace. 3 ft. 316

PINEST HOUR (Stevens) Another "diflerent" amoena of Mrs. Stevens' raising - this time

a striking red and white. The firmly closed standards of this iris are snowy white except down towards the hafts, where they are faintly flushed with lemon chartreuse. The falls are rounded and the glowing plum-red colour is rich and even. The branching is excellent and the whole plant is a vigorous grower and an excep- tionally fast increaser. Very early flowering, it is one of the first to open but remains in flower over a long season. H.M. 1961. 34 ft.

51-

FLEETK-pay, u.s.A.) An outstanding new clear pink from one of America's foremost

breeders. Held on well branched stems the large clean hafted flowers have lightly ruffled standards and broad flaring falls. Vigorous and free-flowering this is a pink we can fully recommend. 3 ft. A.M., A.1.S. 151-

acclaim before its introduction as did this lovely and sensational silver-blue, and its reception on introduction has set the seal to its

popularity. The very large flowers, beautifully frilled ancl ruffled, are lightest silvery blue, deepening softly to an intense silver blue where it extends on to the fall, and a clear tracery of blue on the hafts, add to its distinctive individuality. The standards, like the falls, are heavily ruffled and remain firmly upright throughout the life of the flower. H.M. 1960. 3 ) ft. 716

PRANCES CRAIG (Craig, U.S.A.) Large flowered with the characteristic globular look of the

true oncobred, the colour is a smooth and very clear shade of soft periwinkle blue. Substance, height ancl branching are ideal, and the plant is a first class grower and increaser. A.M. 1955. 3 ft. 316

FRANCES KENT (De Forest, U.S.A.) A lovely pastel toned Rower of excellent form and good

substance. The colour is a soft cool cream delicateIy flushed with pink, particularly in the standards and hafts. Quite distinct and a firm favourite. 3 ft. 316

GALILEE (Fay, U.S.A.) A striking blue of faultless form and heavy substance. A true

blue iris of medium depth with a yellowish beard. Flowers are large, rounded, and full petalled with no haft markings, and are carried on low-branched strong straight stems. A very lovely flower. 3 ft. 21 1-

GOLDEN ALPS (Brummitt, England) Ivory white standards and butter yellow falls. This is the

famous yellow amoena raised by the foremast English breeder The flowers are large and well proportioned and branching is excellent. Free-flowering and makes a lovely clump. Late. 3 It. 151-

GOLDEN SUNSHINE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) Despite the many yellow irises available there has been a

singular gap in the modern iris between the rich creams and pale yellow and the true golds. In Golden Sunshine we have a bright, true yellow, soft yet gleaming, rich yet light, a yellow which will not overwhelm the pale blues but enhance their colour. A.M. 1956. 34 ft. 216

GOLD PIECE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) With so few really difJerent good yellows on the market, we

are pleased to add this variety to our collection. From Golden Sunshine comes the rich, yellow colouring, and from Inca Chief comes leathery texture and heavy, opaque substance. In appear- ance like thinly sculptured stone, the skilful blending of the best qualities of these two varieties has given added beauty to this colour class. Ruffled and flaring and well branched. Gold Piece presents colour which is startlingly vivid, rich and brilliant. H.M. 1959. 3 ft. 151-

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (Hall, U.S.A.) The pinks of recent introduction have outgrown the faults of

earlier years - lack of substance, branching and height. The raiser of Happy Birthday has lor many years led the way in breeding better pinks and we consider this variety to be one ol his finest. The blooms are not only large and beautifully formed with wide petals, but the edges of the petals are daintily serrated, almost lacy. The colour is a light but rich clear pink and the plant is very vigorofis and free flowering. A.M. 1954. 3 ft. 216

HAPPY MEETING (Lyon, U.S.A.) A highly ruffled plicata with very heavy substance and

attractive colour. The standards are ivory white with violet stitch- ing and the falls white with a solid edging of deeper violet. Splendid branching, size and form. H.M. 1955. 3 ft. 51-

HARBOR BLUE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) So few extra large irises are really beautiful, but here we have

a flower whose great size is balanced by very broad vigorous foliage, very tall, stout and well branched stems, and, in the flowers, by very broad and fluted petals, extra good substance, and intense colour. This iris was the winner of the Romney Towndrow Memorial Award for the iris with the finest form in England in 1955. A blue which is soft, yet clean and intense. A.M. 1957. 4 ft.

HEADLINES (Brummil, England) A n amazing improvement in the limited amoena class of white

standards and violet falls, this English variety has falls which are darker than those of Gaylorcl. Very robust in growth, the blooms have an almost waxen substance in a classically formed flower. The breeding achievement which eliminated the old light haft veining and markings of the past has given us a flower of an amazingly intense colour contrast. English Dykes Medal 1959. 23 it. INCA CHIEF (Mitsch, U.S.A.) When this lovely iris was first introduced in the States it

created a real sensation. The colour is almost incredible, an intensely rich and pure, brilliant burnished golden-bronze with a lustrous texture. The form is gently flaring, and the flowers are huge, but beautifully proportioned - simply magnificent. This breathtaking beauty has already been widely used for breeding and is proving an exceptionally fine parent for all shades of browns, golden and red bronzes. A.M. 1955. 24 ft. 316

INSPIRATION (Stevens) The flowers are huge, but in perfect balance and well spaced.

The standarcls are a brilliant rosy carmine with bronze shading, while the falls are a deeper tone of the same shade. A vivid flower which is always popular. Early. 3 ft. 216

JUNE MEREDITH (Muhlestein, U.S.A.) For those looking for a rich pure flanlingo pink this iris will

be of special interest. Of recent years the tangerine bearded pinks have tended further and further away from the true pale rose shade that is true pink and today most of the new pinks being introduced are nearer to apricot and salmon than they are to rose. Deeper in colour than any other pink we grow, June Meredith has good form, nice size and excellent substance. One of the real advantages in deep flamingo pink and quite outstanding. A.M. 1956. Runner-up Dykes Medal 1958. 3 ft. 7/6

JUNGLE FIRES (Schreiner, U.S.A.) Introduced in America as recently as 1960 (and selected at a

regional show the year before its introduction as the most interest- ing new red) Jungle Fires was quickly singled out for acclaim. Exceptionally smooth and with excellent branching, its flaring form and dusty, silken sheen are unusual among red irises, setting it apart as just that much different, just that much better than its forerunners. Perhaps this new red appeals so much because of its uniformity of colouring - while most reds give a slightly two-toned effect. Jungle Fires is completely self coloured. Rated by many experts as the fincst red of recent years. H.M. 1960. 3 ft. 251-

LADY ILSE (Smith, U.S.A.) The vogue for the new pinks and rich coppers has sharpened

our appreciation for the wonderful beauty of the celestial blue colour with which irises are so richly endowed. This descendant of Jane Phillips, with its deft blue hues with a silver cast, is truly a lovely beauty of exquisite charm. The full, rounded standards are well cupped and the falls, exceptionally wide across the blade and haft, are semi-flaring with a lemon beard. A light ruffling of bolh standards and falls puts a finishing touch of perfection. A.M. 1955. 39 ft 51-

LADY MOHR (Salbach, U.S.A.) The first break away from the dark tonings of the hybrid

oncobreds, Lady Mohr has standards of oyster white toned with palest blue and falls of chartreuse or greenish yellow with a prom- inent signal patch of red-violet surrounding the bronzy beard. Perrect form and heavy substance. 3 ft. 216

LAVISH LADY (Buttrick, U.S.A.) A delicate sea-lavender colour in a flower of porcelain-like

texture. The broad petalled rutyled flowers are large and well spaced, and of an almost unbelievable smoothness, This lovely new iris from the famed Wedding Bouquet is quite distinct in its colour- ing, being close to that lovely light tone seen in the double Parma Violet. H.M., A.P.S. 3 it. 1016

MAESTRO (Stevens) There is a place in every iris collection for this huge but

perfectly balanced deep wine-red self. A rich brown undertone and a white beard give splendour and character to a majestic flower. 3 ft. 216

MAORI LEGEND (Stevens) A broad petalled golden apricot iris which, even before its

introduction, was a subject of admiration. The colour is rich and even, much deeper in effect than any of the apricot pinks, and has almost a salmon note in its goldy apricot lone. The form of the flower is excellent, the petals being broad and full and well dis- played, while the substance is thick and the texture waxen. 3 fl.

MARY RANDALL (Fay, U.S.A.) This iris is one of the landmarks in modern iris breeding, and

created a veritable sensation on its introduction in the Statcs. I t is a deep rose pink self with a brilliant tangerine beard, and the lovely ruffled form is flawless. This particular shade of rose, arising out of the intercrossing of flamingo pink varieties, has been popularly called "raspberry pink" but it is much richer and warmer than the earlier raspberry pinks. MARY VERNON (McICee, U.S. A.) A lovely blended variegata with golden bronze-flushed stan-

clards and rounded flaring falls of a rich bright red margined with a distinct band of old gold. A large flower of very solid substance a n d most attractive from every point of view. 3 ft. 216

MAY HALL (Hall, U.S.A.) Considered by its raiser to be anlongst the finest flamingo

pink irises he has raised this variety has large flowers of perfect form. Ruffled both in standards and falls the flowers are beautifully poised on ideally spaced and branched stems. The colour is a soft clcar pink self with a bright tangerine beard. Wonderfully weather resistant. A.M., A.1.S. 3 ft. 1016

MELODRAMA (Cook, U.S.A.) One of the finest irises we have seen, no description can do full

justice to this truly great flower. The standards are palest lavender- blue, deepening allnost imperceptibly into their hafts to meet the deeper violet-blue of the falls, with no yellow, cream or white to destroy the merging of the colours. The form of the flower is runled and frilled, flared in the falls and faultless. A good increaser a n d very popular. A.M. 1958. Runner-up Dykes Medal 1961. 3& ft.

MIDNIGHT BLUE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) A suave, peri, trimly tailored dark blue with deep violet over-

lones. Jaunty carriage, serene uniforinity of colouring plus a silky rather than a velvety sheen, give it a personality all its own. There a r e far too few of these dark blues which are indispensable in the garden. H.M. 1956. 3 f t . 51-

MOI-IRLAKE (Christie, N.Z.) This large and lovely oncobrecl was raised by crossing the Tall

Bearded Mountain Lake with Capitols, resulting in a flower com- bining the lovely form of Mountain Lake with thc exotic charnl of t he oncocyclus. The colour is a light lavender-blue, muted in tone, clear in effect. Altl~ough it has more oncocyclus blood than many oncobreds it has proved an easy grower. 2 ft. 51-

MOONLIGHT MADONNA (Sass, U.S.A.) A clear lemon ice yellow with a hint of green, delicately lovely

and prettily rulfled. These lemon ice yellows are really different and are characterised by the clcan, sol't sunlight effect, very differ- ent from the gold or usual yellow tones. They are extremely valuable for combining with the pale blues and true pinks as well as making excellent highlights amongst the deeper colours. 3 ft. 216

MOONLIGHT SONATA (Stevens) A lovely lime yellow with a frosty sheen, the large perfectly

formed flowers of this delightful iris have an individuality whose character is hard to convey in words. The edges of the flared petals have a fin2 serrated frosting which lends a delicate encl~antment to a flower of unusual grace. It is the only lime yellow without any green and is really distinct and different. Late. 3 ft. 216

MUTED MUSIC (Palmer, U.S.A.) Here is another of the iris varieties which Mrs. Stevens chose

to bring back to New Zealand on her trip to Oregon in 1960, not because it was one of the bluest of the blues - the colour is much nearer periwinkle than sky-blue - but because of its flawless form and even smooth colouring. This variety entrances one on first sight - it has the look of real perfection and truly great quality. As flower follows flower on the beautifully branched stems admiration grows for this smooth, smooth blue, whose last flower is as flawless and as fresh as the very first. H.M., A.I.S. 3 ft. 301-

MYSTIC MELODY (Stevens) Mystic Melody is a sister seedling of Summit and, while the

contrast between the standards and falls is as great, the sharpness of the contrast has been muted and softened by the smooth cream standards and the richer deep gold of the falls. This beautiful mellow quality is intensified by the softer outline of Mystic Melody's form which surrenders the dignity of the classic shape for the charm of gentle ruffling. Though the flowers are really large, one is not conscious of their size owing to their perfect proportions and to thc smooth purity of the cream and warm rich gold colour. NEON LIGHTS (Stevens) With many pink irises being raised overseas and the best of

them being introduced into this country, we are pleased to offer a New Zealand raised variety that is a pink with a difference - unexpected, vivid, but with a strangely pleasing effect. The firmly held standards are clearest rose pink, while the falls, graceful ancl semi-flaring, are pink shadowed blue-grey, with intense golden- orange shoulders, the whole set oCE ancl highlighted by a wide, lush and startling vermillion beard. With good branching and height the heavy substanced blooms are shown to full advantage - an iris neither the connoisscur nor the casual observer can pass bj. A vigorous grower and increaser. 3$ ft. 1016

OLD MELODIES (Stevens) Raised from the mating of one of N.Z.'s most distinctive

introductions, Polar Cap, with one of Paul Cook's fabulous new anloenas, this iris exhibits the best features of each strain. We have the lovely serene form and character of Polar Cap combined with that indefinably smooth merging of colour from the lighter stan- dards to the deeper falls of Paul Cook's lovely amcenas. Old Melodies is not an omoena but a bicolour lavender with rounded cupped standards of palest lavender which deepens at the midrib and hafl Lo soflen the contrast lo the much deeper coloured rich lavender blue of the falls. The beard is pale and inconspicuous ancl does not disturb or distract from the colour harmony'of the flower. Very free-flowering, tall and stately, the bloom spike carries many flowers wcll spaced on its splenclid branching. A perfect show flower. 35 ft. 211-

OLYMPIC TORCH (Schreiner, U.S.A.) This vivid bronze iris is really brilliant, a dazzling flower in a

colour undrcamcd of a Few years ago. I1 is a true self, a glowing light golden bronze of large size ancl ideal branching. The flowers have very lovely form, the broad, stilF standards swirling their ruflled petals to form a torch-like peak, while the waxen-substanced falls are broad, flaring and delightfully ruffled. A truly outstanding novelly introduced in the United Stales by the raiscr as recently as May of 1958, it is obviously dcstined for a great future. A.M. 1960. 3-1, f. 51-

PINK ENCHANTMENT (Muhlestein. U.S.A.) An exceptionally fine deep flamingo pink with an intense

cerise beard that singles it out immediately. Too many of the pinks which have been clistributed by American breeders over recent years are far too nearly alike. But in Pink Enchantment we have a distinct new pink of a shade still rare. An excellent grower. A.M., A.I.S. 2ft. 9 ins. 421-

PINK PLUME (Schreiner, U.S.A.) We consider that "Orchid Plume" would have been an apter

name for this exceptionally fine flower, as the use of the word "pink" suggests the new real pinks, while Pink Plume is really a bright, light orchid pink. A supremely beautiful iris whose exquisite standards are donled with utmost circumspection, whose broad falls have a classic perfection of form. A patrician beauty, chaste and serene. A.M. 1954. 3 ft. 216

PINNACLE (Stevens) This iris with its snowy white standards and soft yellow falls

is without dispute one of the most famous and popular irises of today. I t is no exaggeration to say that no iris has ever received greater acclaim. The work of many years of intensive breeding, Pinnacle not only brought to the iris an entirely new colour com- bination, but in addition to this the combination of pure white with yeIlow has proved to have immense garden beauty and value. Again, since its introduction Pinnacle has proved itself a grand performer in all climates and all soils. With its lovely form, waxen substance, and soft clean colouring it is an iris of supreme beauty. A.M. 1951. 33ft. 216

POLAR CAP (Stevens) The flowers of this happily named iris are large, of massive

substance, and have an exceptionally long individual life, retaining their form to the last. When the bloom first opens the colour in the falls is a soft lavender-blue. which lightens gradually to a pastel tone which holds throughout the life of the flower, even in strong sunlight. The standards are a real snowy white, no hint of cream or blue to mar their purity, and form an opulent rigid dome, virgin, cool and sparkling. H.M. 1956. 2E ft. 316

POLYNESIAN DANCER (Stevens) A lovely quiet-toned iris of novel colouring. The soft bronzy

cream standards have a perfcct foil in the falls which are a light tobacco brown, enlivened by a rich gold beard. The flower js beautifully ruffled and the flared falls have a lilting grace. 23 ft. 3/6

PRETTYFIELD (Paul Cook, U.S.A.) A lovely flower with snowy standards and broad white falls

beautifully bordered with a soft blue margin. In some ways not unlike the same breeder's Wonderment, but we Ieel that Prettyfield has a purer, more other-world eflect, with its colourless self white beard and softer blue margin colouring. A very lovely flower of flawless form and splendid growth habit. 3 h. 30/-

PURIRI (Stevens) Between the cool and charming light orchid tones and the rich

purple shades there is a field of colour which has been little devel- oped hitherto. Wc arc therefore pleased to have this variety with its rich yet lively rosy lilac, light in the standards, deeper in the falls. I t was named for the colour of the berries of the native tree, the Puriri. The flower is large. both ruffled and flared, with very wide hafts. Stems are tall and well branched, and it is veryfrec- flowering. 34 ft. 316

REHOBETH (De Forest, U.S.A.) Here is beauty shown in perfection in palest blue - almost an

ice blue. I t is, lo many of us, surprising that in the large field of light and pale blues breeders can still produce new varieties distinct and different, but here again we see that they can. ROCOCO (Sclireiner, U.S.A.) For many years the old favourite Blue Shimmer was regarded

as the best of the blue plicalas, being replaced in favour by Belle Meade only in the last few years. And now comes Rococo to sweep aside all past standards and pose as what must be the ultimate in bluc plicatas. Never did an iris display such an intricate, pctunia- like ruffling - indeed, in both colour and form this is probably the fanciest iris in existence. The snowy white ground colour of both standards and falls, the clean-cut margining of freshest violet blue, the classic grace, all suggest the exquisite perfection of Grecian art. Tall and well branched and with really solid substance. For those lovers of ruffled petals this is a "must have" and for those lovers of beauty for beauty's sake we recommend Rococo. Plant Patent NO. 2077. A.M. 1962. 34ft. 301-

ROSY VEIL (Sass, U.S.A.) Like a white silk dress covered with a rosy veil, is this dainty

feminine iris of delightful form. Not a bold, constrasty plicata, but an exquisite delicate one with dainty web-like stitchings of rosy heliotrope along the margins. A.M. 1959. 3 ft. 51-

ROYAL SOVEREIGN (Stevens) Entirely distinct, this glorious iris is a smooth, very light

orange. Sensational as is the colour, the rich plush velvet of the falls and the rigidly held, tafCeta-textured standards are equally so. A true self without a single vein or variation in colour, this iris has received high acclaim overseas. The flowers are large and the plant is a vigorous grower and rapid increaser. H.M. 1953. 3 ft. 216

SALEM (Schreiner, U.S.A.) Over the years iris breeders have been striving for a true blue,

slowly but surely eliminating the violet undertones. Here is undoubtedly the "bluest" blue we have ever seen. Appropriately named - the word is said to mean "heavenly peace" - this iris is an inexpressibly serene, limpid light - almost sky - blue. A real self, Salem is so very blue that the last traces of violet vanish at twilight. Beautifully held on well branched stems the flared and

SENIOR SERVICE (Stevens) A lovely pure deep blue self, very smooth and clean with a

matching blue beard. Most deep blue irises are really blue-purples, but this new blue of Mrs. Stevens' raising is quite without any purple shading, yet the colour is deep and rich. A clean haft accent- uates the even colour effect. Most striking in the garden. 3 ft. 51-

SPARKLING WATERS (Schreiner, U.S.A.) In this outstanding novelty we have one of the very fines1 irises

raised by the Scl~reiner family, who, incidentally, have secured the lion's share of the highest American awards in recent years. A large, silvery, light blue that glistens with a frosty sheen in the sunlighl, the large flowers are exquisitely rulfled, very broad petalled and solid, yet they have such purity ancl grace that their beauty has an almost dream-like quality. seems almost red, at another angle it looks heavily influenced with burnishecl gold. This brilliant iris of lovely flared form has indeed captured and held the fires of sunset. Well branched and large flowered, it stands out even on a dull day. A.M. 1951. 3 t f t . 2/15

SUNSET SNOWS (Stevens) See Novelties, page 5

SYLVAN SONG (Stevens) A very distinct and novql personality, this is a true self in a

warm honey cream. A faint 'dusting of cinnamon brown at the J hafts gives a rich, almost vibrant note, unexpected in such a light toned flower. Exceptionally free flowering. 4 ft. 2 / 6

TALL CHIEF (De Forest, U.S.A.) With the introduction of Trim lo New Zealand, two years

ago, was heralded the addition of size, a virtue long lacking in red irises. And again, with Tall Chief, we have large blooms on tall and well branched stems, this time in a spectacular shade of cven, rich and glossy Brazil red. The standards are firmly held and slightly rufl'lecl and the broad flaring falls show 012' a brilliant orange beard. H.M. 1957. 3; ft. 716

TECHNY CHIMES (Bro. Charles, U.S.A.) A luminous yellow of exceptional clarity. The entire flower is

full and copiously formed, with both standards and falls lightly ruffled. Capping all this is a rich bright orange-tangerine beard which gives a dramatic effect. A.M., A.T.S. 3 ft. 10/6

THE MAD HATTER (Lyon, U.S.A.) An outstanding red - a deep, rich mahogany red - and one of

the best performers we haw seen, even for milder districts. The large, semi-flaring blooms are heavy substanced and are shown to full advantage on very tall well-branched stems. An excellent increaser. Late. H.M. 1951. 34ft. 216

TOLL GATE (Cook, U.S.A.) With standards of palest blue - almost white - and falls of

dark violet, this bold bicolour is the darkest variety from the line of breeding that has produced such outstanding irises as Whole Cloth and Emma Cook. The stems are tall and well-branched and produce many large flowers. A distinctive character is the contrast of the yellow beard extending across the hafts which are the same pale blue as the standards. H.M. 1959. 3 ft. 1216

TOP I?AVORITE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) The largest, and one of the most magnificent, orchid pink irises

we have seen. A clear, bright self with a white beard and a soft overlay of amber-buff at the centre of the flower, the form is perfection itself. A scintillating stardust sheen and a loucli of ruRliiig give it a light and ethereal qualily that belies its heavy, almost leathery substance. Tall, strong and well-brancl~ed, a "top favourite" with all who have seen it. H.M. 1957. 3 ft. 716

TRIM (McKee, 'U.S.A.) This outstanding red iris froni America is, in our opinion, the

first red witli the high quality of size, substance and smoothness possessed by the new irises of other colours. Reds have increasingly lagged behind in quality until the appearance of Trim. So highly did the American introducer rate this iris that he took out the first Plant Patent ever applied for by the American iris growers. It is a brown red, not a wine red, and added to lovely Form, smooth rich colour and large size, it has a wonderfully fine petal texture which adds a satin sheen to the flower. Excellently branched, each stem produces a wealth of blossom. H.M. 1956. 3 ft. Patent No. 1592.

TROPIC MOON (Stevens) A large, very rounded pale yellow of exceptional substance and

soft light toning is one we need to adequately display tlie lovely new blues. Extremely free-flowering, this iris is a general favourite with everyone. Shorter in stature than other light yeIlows and with very sturdy stems, it makes an ideal light iris for foreground plant- ing. Early. 24 ft. 21 6

VALlMAR (Hamblen, U.S.A.) A superbly rich and smooth apricot pink with a striking

tangerine beard. With firmly closed standards and flaring, ruffled falls, the prolific bloom is displayed to perfection on well branched stems. The exceptionally heavy, starch-like substance and sculp- tured form are a rare combination in these pastel tones and indicate the qualities that have been so appreciated overseas. Excellent doer and increaser. A.M. 1960. 3 ft. 1716

VANITY (Stevens) A rosy-lilac blend, large and with good form. In the standards

the lilac is shot with light bronze. Falls are a lovely blending of lilac and gold with a flash of heliotrope below the yellow beard. Once establisl~ed will flower several times a year. Early. 3 ft. 216

VELVET ROBE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) While progress with the reds Iias been slow, hcre is a

mahogany-crimson that exccls all other reds in velvetiness. The golden beard in tlie broad-halted throat seems to illuminate the glistening plushy sheen, A touch of rufTling, not seen before in the reds, adds to the air of quiet luxury. An excellent foreground iris. H.M. 1960. Under 3 ft . 251-

VIOLET HARMONY (Lowry, U.S.A.) This shapely and sercnely poised flower is one of the classics

of this iris world. An exquisite casual rufTle gives it an air of elegant yet regal simplicity. The lovcly shade of light violet with a cleft touch of lighter tone in thc centre of each fall petal gives a positively orchid-like ef-Tect. Introduced in 1952, Violet Har- iuony won the President's Cup in 1953 and quickly became a lavourite t l i ro~~gl~out America, until today it stands in second place in the Popularity Poll voting ol that country. in 1957, a short five

years after introduction, it gained the Dykes Medal Award, a sure indication not only of its worth, but also of its free-flowering virtues and of its vigour. 35 ft. 51-

WEDDING BOUQUET (Buttrick, U.S.A.) Not since the introduction of Snow Flurry many years ago has

so sensationalIy beautiful a white been offered to the iris lover. And just as Snow Flurry on its introduction in 1937 utterly eclipsed all other white irises, so today we feel that Weclding Bouquet has eclipsed its contemporaries. An immense flower. so beautifully balanced in form, in stem height and growth, that one does not realise its size, it has all the virtues - heavy substance, beautifully rulfled petals, exquisitely domed standards and an utter purity of colour. From the first flower that opens to the very last late bloom on the well-balanced stem each flower is faultless. Wedding Bouquet never "has been good this year" - while there is a solitary flower lcft it "still is eood". How seldom can we say this of any variety. This is the new standard against which the white irises of the future must be judged. A.M. 1956. 34 ft. 316

WHIR OF LACE (Schreiner, U.S.A.) An exquisite ethereal white whose petal edges are formed of

ruffled lace. Lace-edged irises are comparatively new to the iris world and have to date mainly becn confined to the browny blencls and the pinks and orchids, and even amongst these colours lace- edged varieties are not common. Whir of Lace is like a bridal frock, exquisite in its purity and foaming at its edges into a truly fairy grace. Stock limited. 2f t . 9 ins. 421-

Such is Whole Cloth, introclucecl in America in 1958 and one of the most talked-of irises of the tlecade. The clear, opaquc white standards are helcl very rigidly upright and the firm, smooth medium light blue falls are gently flared. Tall and well branched, flowers lighlly ruBlecl, form and substance exccllenl, 'beauty of colour - if this sounds like a perfectionist's dream then well it may be. WIDE WORLD (Cook, U.S.A.) Strilcingly different, this is the first blue and white reverse

bicolour, with standards pale blue deepening towards the base and falls gleaming white. The large flowers have the full, rounded look reminiscent of the oncobreds and are carried on tall, well branched stems. Of interest to breeders, as it carries blood of Iris imbricata. H.M. 1954. 3$ft. 5 / -

WONDERMENT (Cook, U.S.A.) A sister seedling of the famous Whole Cloth, this is another

beautiful blue and white amoena - as outstanding as its sister but enchantingly different. With the same firm, clean white standards, thc blue is rather a wash of colour cascading over the flaring falls in a manner that is distinctive and unusual. H.M. 1958. 3 ft. 15/-

WOOD PIGEON (Brummit, England) No year goes by in which that queen of flower colour, the Iris,

does not produce before the incredulous eye of the gardening world, some new colour tone or some new colour combination. Wood Pigeon has snowy white rounded standards rising above falls of a mulberry toned brown, almost a metallic brown, near the colour of the breast of an English Wood Pigeon. Not tall, a bare 30 inches, this is a notable breeding achievement, and a near approach to a brown amoena. 301 -

YOUTHFUL CHARM (Stcvens) Of all the flowers which grace and ornament our gardens none

can rival the Iris for beauty of form or variety of colour. Essentially the credit Tor this claim must be given to the many dedicated breed- ers who, by long continued ellort, have transformed the hall' dozen wild plants of the past into the glory of toclay's beauties with their wealth of variety. In irises every year there is something new and something exciting to tempt the gardener. Dswarf Bearded Irises

During the last ten years there have been tremendous strides made in the development of the Dwarf Bearded Irises, in their colour range, their blossom form, and in their garden habit. They have always been popular with a certain class of gardener providing as they do, a bright display in the early spring, but with their increased colour range and finer forms they have increased their popularity to a sensational degree.

Today the standards by which the Dwarfs are judged have been altered, or perhaps it is more correct to say that the old, rather elastic standards have been modified and crystalised. Today the ideal Dwarf must be really dwarf, and the flowers should be in proportion, that is they should be really small - miniature flowers o n miniature plants. The ideal Dwarf should be early blooming, very free-flowering, unbranched so that each stem holds its tiny blossom at one height level. The falls should be horizontal so that they can be seen to best advantage when one is standing looking down on them, and the tiny standards should be firmly upright so tlzat the flower withstands rain and bad weather.

The culture of the Dwarf Bearded Trises is not unlike that of the Tall Bearded. Like the large irises they need full sun, they like plenty of lime and a loose root run, and they must have good drainage. But whereas the Tall Bearded Irises will tolerate a fairly sunny position, and fairly good drainage, the Dwarfs are more particular and must have full sun and perfect drainage. Happily, however, it is quite easy to provide them with drainage better than some gardens have naturally. 111 heavy soils the level of the site can be built up with a good quantity of sharp sand, or the Dwarf irises can be planted on a rockery, where not only will they get perfect drainage, but where they will give pockets of vivid colour early in the spring. Care should be taken that though the soil should be well supplied with humus no nitrogenous manures should be given them. With too much nitrogen or too rich a soil the plants will make a lot of leaf growth, which in turn will bring soft-rot. With some varieties too rich a soil will force the plants and cause the stems to be too tall for the flowers. Superphosphate and potash a re very safe manures to use.

Table Iris or Miniafure Tall Bearded

This is a section of irises which flowers at the same time as the Tall Beardeds but in the Table Irises the flowers are dainty mini- atures, not more than about three inches across and carried on slender, wiry, flexuose stems, from 15 to 28 inches tall, making them ideal for indoor arrangements. The attractive little white Pewee is the only variety amongst those we are listing here which is at all well known in New eZaland and we feel that its popularity is some indication of the demand there will be for the other varieties we list here. Stocks of them are still limited, so we recommend you place your order early to ensure delivery.
