Wyndham, but had to stop on the Ord River Bridge for road works and at traffic lights. There was a tractor in front with aslasher attached, and all of a sudden there was an almighty crash into my rear which took me several moments to realisejust what had happened. The offending car had a load of drunks and I believe the driver blew 0.4, some 8 times over thelimit at 7.30am. As they had been seeing hooning around the town just shortly before the accident I assume they weretravelling full speed with no sign of any braking.

The shock of such a sudden impact has to be experienced (and I hope none of you have done so or will do so), and it tooka while to come to my senses to realise what had happened. The impact cannoned me into the slasher, with the result thatthe front was completely smashed in and the tail end which has a spare tyre attached to the outside of the back door waslevel with the back seat. I had laid down a suitcase here in this space with plenty of spare room when I picked up thevehicle. Total write off. My injuries would have been classified as minor as I received grazes down the front of legs andarms, and nothing else at that stage. However after a few hours the pain of where the seat belt had crossed my chestbegan to become the major problem and one that lasted 6 weeks—bruising only thankfully.

The main reason for this article is to point out the features of the modern car technology. Front and back crumple zonestook the major impact. Seat belts restrained me from being thrown forward. Head restraint and air bags prevented mefrom whiplash or other crush injury. I had noticed that the head restraints were very close to the head with little gap-fantastic.

Insurance in a hire car is $4000 excess with basic insurance for a multiple car accident. I had taken out the next levelwhich took the excess down to $400. This was insurance from Budget rent cars.I had booked it all through RACV which gave me a discount of 10% on everything, so excess was $350.The hire company offered me another car which again was a RAV4 but with gears. Try driving a car with gears with severebruising of the ribs—ouch. However all went well and next week in Darwin hired a Corolla—automatic which was great. This year I am going to the sunshine coast in October and again have booked all through the RACV including the insuranceand they cover for full insurance with no excess, as I understand anyway.

Unfortunately my days of going on the bike have passed for several reasons. One being that one of my hobbies include birdwatching and the bike is OK but impractical for many places. I have had many holidays on the bike to Queensland over thelast 20 years and it is time for a change and more comfort.Bob TateMember 1028.

Mornington Peninsula Ride 17 April 2016

After Brian’s planned ride over Arthurs Seat in February had to be changed due to the Herald Sun Tour taking over the roads, hemanaged to lead us on a great tour of the Mornington Peninsula on 17 April. We were blessed with great autumnal riding weather(perfect) to boot and a good number of people turned up at Dandenong to enjoy the ride he had planned and there was the usual great

mix of bikes along too. The briefing was dispensed with quickly and Andrew volunteered to do TEC duties.

We got under way by heading south for a transport section down the Westernport Freeway before turning back towards the Bay and wethen followed a very interesting set of roads (including some I had never been along so I can’t tell you exactly where we went) beforereaching Dromana and then ascending the lovely Arthurs Seat Road to the Peninsula ridges and taking in some lovely views beforestopping at Red Hill South for morning tea. The morning tea venue was quite busy with quite a number of cyclists also out, anequestrian event going on and large numbers of other motorcyclists out enjoying the beautiful weather. We had a leisurely break thereand enjoyed a good chat before heading south again towards Shoreham where I had to say farewell to the group as I had commitments

to return home for a grandson’s birthday.

The group continued around the far reaches of the Mornington Peninsula (Flinders, Boneo, Fingal) before revisiting Arthurs Seat for a

final descent and lunch stop at Dromana Pier.

I thoroughly enjoyed the part of the ride I could participate in and wish to say thank you to Brian for his planning of and leading a well

organised ride.

Brian has asked me to list the riders and their bikes, because he never forgets a bike and is trying very hard to achieve that with the

rider’s names (sound familiar to anyone else?):

Sunday 8th May 2016

Mother’s Day 2016 dawned to a wet and grim sky with steady rain falling as I arose to lead the wonderful ride I had devised and

travelled a few days earlier to check out the roads which are in excellent condition.

On getting out of the shower I noticed a message on my phone. It was Ron Blomley who almost never misses a ride saying that he was

not coming. Ron does not mind riding in the rain but is reluctant to leave home if it is raining at the time. I rang him back and he wished

me luck.

Not to be deterred I put on all of my wet weather gear and even the “fog off”which stops my visor from fogging up, took a look at my nice

shiny new Vstrom, and headed out into the weather. On arrival at Lilydale at 9.40am I felt a little lonely so I sat down out of the rain and

waited for the hordes to turn up for the ride. Ron rang again about 9.55am to see how many had arrived for the ride but unfortunately I

had no good news for him as I could count the riders on the fingers of no hands.

By 10.05am I realised that no-one was coming even though by now the rain had eased to a drizzle and the sky was clearing a bit. This

was only a false indication as it rained for most of the day.

I realised that all the riders had chosen to go and see their Mums which is entirely understandable so I headed home albeit by a longer

route than normal reasoning that since I was out already, the bike was now dirty, and I was well rugged up I may as well enjoy a ride.

Home again and I hosed the dirt off the bike and put it away for another day.

The good news is that I have a well-planned ride to use on another occasion when it is not raining.

Sunday 15th May 2016. Kalkallo to Yea, 210 kms.

Sunday 15th May showed up as a clear sunny autumn day, for

10 bikes and riders (and Renata as pillion) to leave Kalkallo

and head north up the Hume. (Pat showed up to see us off,

before he left to pack up for a month’s holiday in Europe! –

dedication, or any excuse for a ride?!). We turned off at

Wallan taking the road to Romsey, dodging stray hubcaps in

the middle the road on the way (and keeping Gary on the FJR

at bay on some good corners). The route took us through

Lancefield and across the higher countryside with round

granite boulders and now green countryside to Pyalong. The

patch of new seal, complete with loose chips just over the

crest and down into a right hander kept most riders alert, if

not alarmed! From Pyalong we enjoyed the ride through the

countryside and trees into Seymour for morning tea and

coffee in the sun.

We then cruised out of Seymour on the Highlands road, through a

mixture of countryside, picking up the pace a bit in the interesting

bits, as well as keeping an eye for loose bark and new seal patches.

As predicted by Ray, Vince (who changes his bike every year) could

not resist giving his new Tiger 800 a run in the front for a few kms,

before we took the turns past Caveat and Ruffy and down the hill

into Yarck. The run into Yea was finished by the boring and

unnecessary 80 km/hrs section from Molesworth. Lunch was spent

sitting in the sun at Yea, enjoying the good company of everyone

present, before reluctantly hitting the road for home. It was a great

autumn day ride!!

As well as those mentioned above, other riders were : John (ST1300); Geoff (GS BMW); Gary (Victory); Stefan (K100 BMW); Ray (VStrom);

Ron (BMW).

Many thanks to John Cook for the photos, and Alf for doing tail-end Charlie duties.

Well perhaps it should be called the “Autumn Alpine Tour”as fortunately there was no sign of ice this year. The coldest part of the ridewas riding through some low lying areas on the outlying parts of Melbourne for the start. Onceassembled, the 21 of us headed east along the freeway in sunny but cool conditions for about40 km before turning off near Drouin and thenstopping for road works at Drouin West. We then hada lovely run through dairy country with some lovelyviews including a fog laden Latrobe Valley and thenmet a brief period of fog as we left Yallourn. We got toHeyfield shortly after 10.00. Many refuelled and wemet up with Marshall and Aaron. We enjoyed a

refreshment break at the bakery and thenheaded north past the Glenmaggie Weir and tooksome lovely back roads past Briagolong and

Glenaladale (with Marshall showing me theway) and arrived at Bruthen for lunch just after 12.00after doing about 300 km from the start point. We metup with 9 more participants who had decided to make ita long weekend by riding up on the Friday.Greetings were exchanged, lunch was consumed, bikeswere refuelled and then we headed north along thelovelyTambo

Valley (The Great Alpine Road now more 80 KPHrestriction zones between Bruthen and Ensay inthe windy bits but it really didn’t interfere withenjoyment of the road and scenery) to Omeo where we stopped for a restbreak, exchanged disgraceful lies and some bought last minute supplies. Some people were even commenting on the unseasonal warmth and

removing layers of clothing to cool down!

After the leisurely break we headed out again along the Omeo Highway whichis extremely winding on the way to Anglers Rest, where we again for a breakafter about 40 km of tossing the bikes from side to side. We then crossedthe Cobungra River and continued along the winding road for about 10 kmbefore turning left onto the Bogong High Plains Road and took the windingclimb to the plateau. The road surface is quite coarse and light coloured andextreme concentration was needed as loose gravel was virtually impossibleto see. We then crossed the open alpine plateau and stopped to rest andregroup at Rocky Valley Dam. It was then a short run into Falls Creek before

descending about 5 km to our overnight Stay at the Howmans Gap YMCA lodge after riding just under 500 km from the start point.

We were made welcome and finally caught up with another part ofthe group who had overnighted Lake Tyers and ridden up a couple ofhours ahead of us. In all 42 people participated in the ride this year.Rooms were located, bikes were stored under cover, lodgings were

paid and we adjourned to the main hall for a night of camaraderie.

We had a few relaxing drinks and a chat before dinner, enjoyedsome music DVDs and then dined in a very relaxed and convivialmanner. Many then adjourned to the lounge room with its centralfire and chatted and drank the night away. Age must be havingsome effect on many of us as I noticed that quite a few retiredrelatively early for a Saturday night after the long day of riding.Sunday welcomed us with mild temperatures and we all enjoyed acooked breakfast and then repacked the bikes for the trip home. Our visit there seemed to be over all too soon. We bid our farewellsand my son and some of the group then went their separate wayback to East Gippsland. The remainder of us then descended theextremely winding road back down to Mt Beauty and weencountered some cross country skiers exercising by “poling”theirway up the road –quite an extraordinary sight. We regrouped and

refuelled at Mt Beauty and several then split off to go via the Tawonga Gap to visit Bright on their way home. The majority of us rodedown the Kiewa Valley and then through Happy Valley (a delightful road to ride) to the Ovens Valley. Myrtleford looked lovely in itsautumnal colours was again busy with a weekend festival. We continued straight through and continued along the Snow Road to Oxleywhere we stopped for coffee and a rest. We then rode back up the King Valley (got to see plenty of wineries through these three valleys)to Whitfield. I then enjoyed riding the lovely climb out of Whitfield, passed some spectacular views and continued through Tolmie toMansfield where we stopped for a relaxed lunch. People then started “scenting home”and many broke off to make their individual ways

home. We then continued on to Yea where more broke off to head to the northern suburbs and a small group of us continued viaBreak O Day back to Lilydale before bidding our final farewells. In all, I did about 900 kilometres in the two days. I thoroughly enjoyedthe camaraderie of the ride and the overnight venue. We had a mix of Melbourne branch members, with a few from Macedon rangeswho had joined in for their first “Ice Run”plus an assortment of members’sons and friends. I would like to thank them all for making it

another great weekend of enjoying motorcycling and all it has to offer.

2017 will be the 20th consecutive Ice Run - an event worth commemorating so put the dates of 13 –14 May 2017 in your diary. Weare moving it forward a week to avoid conflict with the AGM at Port Macquarie. If 550 km on day one is a bit much consider heading to

Gippsland on the Friday as many do now.

South Gippsland Ride 19 June 2016

Or Getting Lost Without even Trying

A dozen people turned up at Lilydale for the ride I had advertised as a tour through the orchard region at the back of the Dandenongsfollowed by the hills of Gippsland. The forecast was for dry weather and the temperature was relatively mild considering we were twodays short of the winter solstice. Bill again volunteered to be Tail End Charley and as we were all regulars we headed out shortly after

10.00 am with a minimum of fuss.

We went under the rail trail bridge then immediately turned right up Queens Road, left the highways behind and immediately startedenjoying flip flopping through the innumerable curves on the eastern side of theDandenong Ranges including Old Baker and Monbulk –Seville Roads at moderatespeeds while taking in views of mist laden valleys and farms and orchards. I thenturned onto Old Emerald Road and continued on past a roundabout and mynavigational skills then proved I am not related to James Cook who clearly was afar better navigator than me. I realised I had missed a turn and decided to “wingit”but when confronted by a gravel road going in the wrong direction I decided itwas time to admit my error, do a “U Turn”and inspect the ride group to ensure wewere all in order. I back tracked to the roundabout and then followed my intendedroute to the Macclesfield –Woori Yallock Road and started looking for the left turnI had to do at Avon Road. Rick shot on ahead to take some photos of the groupand when I passed him I came across a bitumen road to our left and took it.Unfortunately this turn was about 3 km early and Tschampions Road is not sealedall the way through to Cockatoo. By the time I realised I had made a secondnavigational error, I decided it was all too late and continued along severalkilometres of damp unsealed road before getting back onto the bitumen andcontinuing on my planned route through Cockatoo and on to Pakenham. The group were all champions and followed through withoutincident. It was rather galling and embarrassing when I passed Avon Road (my intended route) a few kilometres after getting back onthe bitumen and especially so after I had actually bothered to ride the route a few weeks earlier to ensure I did not make any errors. Wethen continued through Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon to our morning tea stop at Garfield. At least the bakery was open. I was thensubjected to a bit of well deserved ribbing with one member in particular saying he would remember to avoid my “orchard”tours infuture. Bill then announced that his Suzuki was having electrical problems and would have to limp home before his battery died. Sam

accompanied him as he had other commitments later in the day and Jeff also hadto leave because of family commitments. Despite the ribbing and humour, most

indicated they had enjoyed the variety of roads so far.

Andrew took over as TEC and once refreshed the rest of us continued east throughthe old railway siding towns to Longwarry and then headed south for a bit beforecutting further east and making our way to Drouin South and then took in thefaster open sweepers through Athlone to Poowong and then via the tight (and attimes bumpy) Bass Valley Road to Bena. We then enjoyed the beautiful sweepingroads, rolling hills and views of South Gippsland via Moyarra and Kongwak beforeheading back up through Glen Alvie, descended again, passed Candowie Reservoirand rode through Almurta before popping out of the hills into Grantville by

Westernport Bay where we stopped and enjoyed lunch and a chat at a local café.

Social Events

The Melbourne Branch hosts one informal Social Nights during the course of each month.

The social night is held on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Tower Hotel at 686 Burwood Road (Cnr

Camberwell Rd) Hawthorn East. from around 7pm.

The Tower Hotel provides a bistro style meal of more than adequate proportions including seafood that is

not expensive. The wine list is fairly comprehensive and the normal range of beer, soft drinks and spirits

is available at reasonable prices.

What makes these nights special is the camaraderie and friendship enjoyed by all who attend with much

laughter and frivolity emanating from the various groups and tables. For new chums and first timers,

introductions are made in the normal Ulyssian manner which ensures that nobody is left standing on the

outer and everyone is made to feel welcome.

These nights are often filled with the usual mirth-filled talk about motorbikes and bike trips, travel in

general, philosophy, geography and the usual odd joke etc. Someone always seems to have an

Australian Road Atlas which is oft referred to and it is heartening to note that some members don't mind

a little embellishment to make their story more interesting. One should never let the facts stand in the

way of delivering a good punch line or yarn!

These nights are not to be missed so pencil them into your social calendar and come along and enjoy

the fun.

Meet for a Saturday Morning Coffee at

Melbourne Bake House

210 Bay Street Port Melbourne,

Drop in for breakfast or just a coffee and a chat!

** Plenty of bike parking available **
