    Lands to be discovered east of the

    imaginary line would belong to

    Portugal.

    Lands to be discovered west of the

    imaginary line would belong to Spain.

    Treaty of Tordesillas

    An imaginary line was drawn from north to south at adistance of 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde

    Islands. LANDS TO BE DISCOVERED EAST OF THIS

    LINE WOULD BELONG TO PORTUGAL, and those

    ON THE WEST WOULD BELONG TO SPAIN.

    If Spain ships discovered lands east of the

    demarcation line, the said lands should be turned

    over to Portugal, and lands discovered by Portuguese

    ships west of the line should be turned over to Spain.

    No Portuguese ships shall be sent to lands belonging

    to Spain, and vice versa, for the purpose of trading

    with them.

    The expedition consisted of 5 ships:

    Trinidad (the flagship) Concepcion Victoria Santiago San Antonio

    March 17, 1521*, he sighted the mountainsofSamar.

    March 18, 1521, Magellan ordered his mento land at Homonhon.

    He proceeded to Limasawawhich was ruledbyRaja Kulambu.

    March 31, 1521 Father Pedro deValderamacelebrated the first mass.

    Magellan took possession of the islands inthe name of King Charles and called themthe Archipelago of St. Lazarus.

    April 8, 1521 Magellan and his menentered the harbor of Cebu.

    Raja Humabonwas the Chieftain of Cebu. He was given the Christian name Carlos; his

    wife was given the Christian name Juana.

    The Victoria returned to Europe by way ofAfrica. The Trinidad returned to Europe byway of the Pacific.

    Trinidad was captured by the Portuguese

    Victoria, commanded by Sebastian delCano, succeeded in reaching Spain.

    Ruy Lopez de Villalobos Expedition

    In 1542, another expedition was sent.Commanded by Ruy Lopez deVillalobos.

    In 1543, he reached Mindanao. He andhis men faced starvation.

    He named the islands of Samar andLeyte Felipinas (Las Islas Filipinas)in honor of Prince Philip of Spain(became King Philip II)

    Miguel Lopez de Legazpi Expedition

    Reached the Cebuin February 1565.

    Sailed to Cibabao (Leyte) then to Samar.

    Sailed to Camiguin Island then toButuan and then to Bohol where he

    entered into a blood compact with Datu

    Si Katuna and Si Gala.

    Went back to Cebu where he

    established the first Spanish

    settlement.

    In 1569, on the banks of thePanay River, he founded thesecond Spanish settlement inthe Philippines.
