Spanish K-12 at Canyon Springs & Highland Lakes Schools Interpersonal Listening & Speaking Embedded Culture Annual curriculum is based on thematic Can Do statements aligned to AZ World & Native Languages Standards & the high school thematic units which are aligned with AP and IB themes. Can Do statements are created to be grade level appropriate and are focused on language acquisition, allowing our students the opportunity to develop basic language skills in Spanish. Focus of Spanish FLEX: Foreign Language Experience (FLEX) model of elementary language instruction. Students receive Spanish instruction one to two times per week. Early opportunities to learn languages increase: Communication Skills Relationships Problem-Solving Skills Vocabulary Reading Skills Creativity Cognitive Development Higher Proficiency in upper level language Understanding of the global world Why learn at the elementary level? What are Spanish Specials? What are future opportunities in World Languages? Language learning opens the world of opportunities to our students. The enrichment at our elementary grades leads to students having the opportunity to earn high school credit in middle school and more opportunities for languages at the high school level. Continuous language program through 12th grade , including Advanced Placement (AP) Language & Culture, AP Literature and International Baccalaureate. (Colleges & Universities give up to 16 college credits for one AP exam.) Colleges & Universities choose students who learn languages throughout school. Students who study languages typically outperform others on college entrance exams . Students can be recognized with the Seal of Biliteracy on high school diploma. Future employers want employees who speak languages. - +25 thousand new jobs by 2020 for language speakers. - Today, one in five jobs is tied to international trade. - Occupations include: commerce, science & technology, health services, social services, education, international relations, national security, tourism & travel, advertising & marketing, purchasing & import/export, editing & publishing, interpreting & translating, media & film, non-prof it, consulting.
