Children Bed Design

Task: To design a bed for a child or two. The bed may be a bunk bed, a rocker/sleeper or with a trundle underneath. It may also be connection to some working or storing space. Modularity, transformability, fold-ability, replica are relevant definitions

for potential concepts. It’s important that the furniture piece be ergonomic and will satisfy the demands of children, therefore joyful, safe and of course functional.

A subject that has always had young children to adolescents thoroughly interested is the

Solar System and or

SPACE.



Our concept

Age: The Sensorimotor stage, between birth to two years. However, babies usually only use cradles for 3 months. Regardless, the bed will be designed for a new born baby Gender: Designed for a boy, but can easily be for both genders Bed: Cradle or a bassinet

Before designing, consider important factors...

Piaget stages of cognitive development: The blueprint that describes the stages of normal intellectual development through infancy to adulthood. Since our bed will be for a baby there will be limited operating, or logical activities. Infants will use to the majority their sensory impressions, motor activities and slight coordination.

Safety: The height of the cradles and bassinets are important, as it should be high as possible to make sure the baby is held securely when rocked. The cradle should obtain an only slight

curve to create a gentle rocking motion. Fixation: Certain fixations to the ground should be considered when designing a cradle. If the cradle is suspended then there must be a joint to stop the cradle from rocking.

Colour: Certain colours will give a certain stimulant reaction to the child. For example, red and

orange colours will keep the child excited, however colours like blue and green will calm the baby and put it to sleep.

A modern, safe, reconstructive version of a cradle, inspired by the unique shape and forms of

the planets in the solar system.

Bearing in mind these factors, we came up with the following possible scenario:

Keep your eye on your baby while he/she sleeps. A perfectly safe,

modernized crib, versatile for any environment.

And can easily be used for storage once your baby has grown up!



Inspiration

The Anemix lighting resembling the fluorescence of a planet



Materials

Mattress: A usually rectangular pad of heavy cloth filled with soft material or an arrangement of coiled springs, used as or on a bed. The mattress will be of course in the shape of the cradle.

Bedding: The bedding for our crib will be entirely white to suit the modernity of the crib. 100% cotton.

“the Anemix” fluorescent lighting by luxia lighting: Luxia Lightig is a company born in Chilie in 2006, made from 5 colleagues of the Master in Lighting in Design at IED Milan 2004. Dreaming of a new global way of giving innovative solutions to the world of lighting design. Will be used in replacement of a typical “Mobile” for babies.

Plexiglass: A transparent acrylic plastic often used in place of glass. By replacing the typical wood of a cradle with plexiglass, it will create an entirely different atmospheric effect to the environment.

Details



Details

A transformation of the typical “Mobile”. This will be built into the interior of our cradle with fluorescent lighting from Luxia. The lighting colour will be a mix of blue and greens to calm the baby and eventually put him to sleep.
