The Student Publication Association (SPA) is made up of interested student newspapers and news sites, magazines and entertainment publications.

It has the purpose of bringing together these student publications so that we can share training, best practice, and recognise the successes across our students.

The University of Southampton Students’ Union have offered to host the first SPA Conference, as a way of bringing together student volunteers in publications, around the country.

While some publications have been involved in the organisation of this conference, we welcome any paper or magazine to bring some volunteers along to Southampton this April.

Welcome Party& NightlifeThe Thursday evening is all about helping people get to know each other, so we have drink & pizza and Karaoke set up in our campus pub, The Stags.

This conference has built in plenty of opportunities to socialise with editors and writers from around the country, so that we can begin to build this national community. Karaoke is a great way to start that bonding.

SessionsThroughout the second day, we willbe hosting sessions from industry professionals and influential figures around student media.

These will mainly focus on training for individual skills in journalism, writing and imagery, as well as sessions for helping publications improve.

We also are inviting a number of relevant organisations to help improve the way student publications run from a commercial viewpoint.

SPA AwardsTo help recognise the successes of publications from around the country, in the evening we shall be hosting the first annual SPA Awards.

Publications and students will have the chance to submit entries into 8 categories, which shall be judged, where possible, by industry professionals, and a People’s Choice category.

The evening will also feature live music and a sit-down, 3 course meal.

General MeetingThis is the first event of the SPA, which at the moment has no committee, and needs a way to become sustainable.

On the Saturday morning, we’ll hold a general meeting with refreshments, so that we can elect some volunteers to help lead this association in the coming year.

We’ll make sure that this national body can develop how it provides support to publications and student journalists.

AccommodationRooms in the IBIS hotel and Premier Inn are available to book through the SUSU Box Office when you get your ticket to the conference.

The cheaper IBIS rooms are available on a first-come first-served basis. You can share rooms to cut the costs.

TravelSouthampton is a fantastic location for travel by car, train or plane.

Southampton Central Station and Airport Parkway are just over 1 hour from London and link to the rest of the country.

These stations are linked directly by the University’s bus service to campus. The airport is minutes from campus by bus.

There are low cost airlines that fly from the city linking us to Leeds, Newquay, Edinburgh and many more locations.

The Students’ Union sits just 5-8 minutes off the M3 and M27.
