The geography of Southwark

Southwark’s populationThe Office for National Statistics’ Neighbourhood Statistics website enables you to find out detailed information on populations for various areas. Below are some key facts about Southwark’s population. The population makeup of an area, e.g. age, gender, ethnicity and levels of deprivation can determine the type of health issues it may face. This has a large influence over the types of health services (including physical activity) required and how best to provide them to the local population.

expected to increase.• There is a high level of ethnic diversity with 63% of people being white, 26% black (of which 16% are of African origin).• Amongst younger people, 68% of school pupils are from ethnic minority backgrounds.• The black population is more concentrated in Peckham, Camberwell Green, Faraday and Chaucer wards of the borough,

which are also amongst the most deprived.*source: London Borough of Southwark JSNA 2011

Levels of deprivation in SouthwarkInformation about the deprivation of the area you’re working in can also help target your work. Deprived areas are likely to have less income so may require cheaper activities. These areas also face more health issues than less deprived areas.

• There are significant contrasts of poverty and wealth in the borough.• Southwark is the 12th most deprived London Borough (41st nationally).• More than 50% of local residents live in rented accommodation (42% council

and 11% registered social landlord) which is more than double that in London and England.

• Considering overall deprivation at a local level there is a clear north south divide in the borough, with most deprivation falling within a north central belt. Four Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) fell within the 10% most deprived in England in 2010 and these are in East Walworth, South Bermondsey, Nunhead and north Livesey.

• Life expectancy for men in Southwark is 77.8 years and women 82.9 years, making male life expectancy lower than in London or England and female life expectancy higher.

• Within Southwark, there is much variation in life expectancy with the difference between the worst off and best off is 9.5 years for males and 6.9 years for females.

• Cardiovascular disease continues to be a significant cause of premature mortality for Southwark, the death rate for under 75s is still 10% higher than the national average.

Activity levels in SouthwarkKnowing the current activity levels, as well as the past activity levels, of people in the area you’re working in can help you plan for and develop sporting provision.

The Active People Survey continuously measures the number of people taking part in sport across the nation and in local communities.

Details on Southwark’s activity levels can be found below:

• Its most recent survey had a sample size of 163,000 people, all aged 16 and over.

• Data goes back as far as 2005/6. • Findings are published every six months. • The key measure is known as the ‘1 X 30’

indicator, which is the number of people who have participated in moderate intensity sport for at least 30 minutes on at least four days of the last four weeks.

• More details on the Active People Survey can be found here.

• Active People also measures sports volunteering. A smaller proportion of Southwark’s residents volunteer in comparison to London and England.

• Coachweb is an online sports coach management system used by Pro-Active London.

Where are people active in the borough?

This map shows activity levels (as measured by the Active People Survey) broken down by MSOA.

It shows that the more deprived areas (as seen on the slide ‘Levels of deprivation in Southwark’) have lower levels of physical activity than the less deprived areas.

Page 10: Southwark - a sport and physical activity profile for the London borough of Southwark

Existing provision of sport and physical activity

• The Active People Survey also measures sports club membership across the country.

• In Southwark, as in London generally, there are less clubs than the rest of the country. People are more likely to take part in informal sport.

• Get Active London (GAL) is an online club and activity finder. The tables show the numbers of facilities registered with GAL.

• Clubmark is Sport England’s quality club accreditation scheme. Clubs which have Clubmark have proved they offer the right environment which ensures the welfare of members and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved throughout their lives.
