GENETIC PROGRESS The Southern Tree Breeding Association has designed and
implemented tree breeding strategies which provide for
simultaneous and continuous improvement in a range of market
driven traits.
For radiata pine, these traits include :
Volume, Stem Form, Branch Quality,
Disease Resistance and Wood Density. For the eucalypt program, these traits
include : Volume, Wood Density, Pulp
Yield. Gains in these traits are regularly
quantified.
% Genetic Gain in Volume for Radiata Pine, 1980 –2000
Genetics is the only technology which continues to deliver significant gains over successive rotations !

FINANCIAL RETURN TO MEMBERS
The Southern Tree Breeding Association has thoroughly examined
the financial benefits and costs associated with radiata pulpwood
and sawlog regimes as well as eucalypt pulpwood plantations. Economic breeding objectives
are being refined to direct the
breeding programs. Assistance is available to any
member to derive the specific
economic returns to their
business. Members can capture the
benefits of targeted breeding
through more sophisticated
markets.
Benefit : Cost analysis for STBA Breeding program.
What other investment in plantation establishment has a Benefit : Cost ratio of over 30:1 !
